Boron removal by iron-aluminum combined anodes from fracturing flowback fluid: Advantages and mechanisms

Ying Zhang,Xule Chen,Miao Dong,Meiyan Li,Chengwen Wang,Yanzong Zhang

During the process of oilfield wastewater reuse, residual Boron in fracturing flowback fluid will lead to premature crosslinking with gelling agents, resulting in excessive viscosity at the front end of the fracturing fluid configuration. This phenomenon has heavily influenced the reuse of wastewater. Electrocoagulation (EC), as an effective approach to decreasing Boron concentration, has been widely studied, while further research of Boron removal from complicated wastewater is required to optimize. EC parameters were investigated to explore the optimal Boron removal effect of Fe, Al and Fe-Al three combined anodes. Under 46.3–57.2 mA/cm 2 , 90 min and pH of 9, Fe-Al anodes exhibit the best effect of Boron removal (84% ± 1.5%). Furthermore, high adaptive capacity of low current density and suitable pH confirm the best choice of Fe-Al combined anodes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) demonstrate the complexation between Boron and metallic oxide. Finally, the common removal of various pollutants including Ca, Cl, K and Na further conduces to the reuse of oil wastewater.

Mn-assisted Fe-electrocoagulation strategy for enhanced efficient arsenic removal and its mechanism

Ping Zhang,Feiping Zhao,Penggang Li,Junhao Zheng,Weichun Yang,Qingzhu Li,Zhihui Yang

Electrocoagulation (EC) is a facile technique for removing arsenic (As) pollutants from different water matrices with high efficiency. In this work, a novel strategy of Mn-assisted Fe EC was developed to further enhance the removal efficiency of arsenite [As(III)] from wastewater. When 1 mM of MnCl 2 was added to an Fe-EC system, the As removal efficiency reached 99.99%, and the residual concentration was only 9 μg/L, which is lower than the World Health Organization’s limit for drinking water . The characteristics of the generated flocs by four different EC processes in Fe, Fe-Mn, Fe-As, and Fe-Mn-As systems were investigated. The results showed that Mn 2+ promoted the formation of FeOOH, FeO x , MnO x , FeHAsO 4 , and MnHAsO 4 through low crystallinity and a high surface area . Density functional theory simulation and crystal orbital hamiltonian population confirmed that the generated Fe-Mn flocs had a greater adsorption affinity for As(III) and arsenate [As(V)]. The possible reactions in the EC processes and reaction mechanisms were also hypothesised. The current work provides meaningful insights into understanding the mechanisms of Mn-assisted Fe-EC systems, and further confirms its potential for practical applications in As pollution treatment.

Highly efficient removal of perfluorooctanoic acid from aqueous solution by H2O2-enhanced electrocoagulation-electroflotation technique

Bo Yang,Yanni Han,Yunpan Deng,Yingying Li,Qiongfang Zhuo,Jinhua Wu

Electrocoagulation (EC) technique was used to investigate the removal performance of aqueous perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) with relatively high concentration as simulating the wastewater from organic fluorine industry. A comparison was done with the similar amount of coagulant between EC and chemical coagulation process. PFOA removal obtained was higher with EC process, especially for Fe anode. Several factors were studied to optimize the EC process. At the optimal operating parameters including 37.5 mA/cm 2 of current density, initial pH 3.77, and 180 rpm of mixing speed, 93% of PFOA could be removed with 100 mg/L of initial concentration after 90-min electrolysis. Furthermore, the remove efficiency could be obviously improved by H 2 O 2 intermittent addition, which removed more than 99% of PFOA within 40-min EC. It could be attributed to that H 2 O 2 facilitated the oxidative transformation from ferrous to ferric ion. In addition, the adsorptive removal of aqueous PFOA on Fe flocs during EC was also verified by fourier transform infrared spectra.

Efficient removal of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) from aqueous solution by electrocoagulation using iron electrode

Bo Yang,Yanni Han,Gang Yu,Qiongfang Zhuo,Shubo Deng,Jinhua Wu,Peixin Zhang

Electrocoagulation (EC) technique was used to investigate the removal performance of aqueous perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) with relatively high concentration as simulating the wastewater from organic fluorine industry. A comparison between iron and aluminum electrode was made to remove PFAAs with the similar electrolysis condition. Effective removal of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was obtained by EC process, especially for Fe anode. Several key factors were studied to optimize the EC process using Fe electrode. At the optimal operating parameters including 25.0   mA/cm 2 of current density, 180   rpm of stirring speed, and 2   g/L NaCl as supporting electrolyte, more than 99% of PFOS could be removed with 0.25   mM of initial concentration after 50-min electrolysis. Additionally, the adsorptive removal of aqueous PFOS on iron hydroxide flocs during EC was also verified by Fourier transform infrared spectra. The investigation of removal efficiency for PFAAs with different carbon chain length after EC and the characteristic of zeta potential on Fe flocs indicated that the electrostatic adsorption was primarily responsible for the PFAAs sorption on the iron hydroxide flocs.

Simultaneous removal of aniline and Sb(V) from wastewater in an integrated electrocoagulation and electro-Fenton system

Yaxiong Zeng,Wenxiang Liu,Xueni Huang,Xiaotian Yang,Beimeng Qi,Jie Yu,Hailu Fu

Heavy metal–organic compound complexes are commonly found in textile dye wastewater, seriously threatening human health. This work proposes a unique integrated electrocoagulation and electro-Fenton (EC-EF) system combining an Fe anode and a carbon-felt-loaded hydroxylated carbon nanotubes (CNTs-OH/CF) cathode for the simultaneous removal of aniline and Sb(V) from wastewater. Under optimal conditions of initial pH of 3.0, NaCl concentration of 0.15 mol/L, and current density of 30 A m −2 , the EC-EF system removed almost 100 % of aniline in 40 min and of Sb(V) in 10 min, with an energy consumption equal to 2.01 KWh kg −1 . The excellent performance derived from the usage of the CNTs-OH/CF cathode increased the number of active sites, hydrophobicity, and electrical conductivity, facilitating the oxygen reduction reaction and electron transfer, thus enhancing the in situ-produced hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) with a concentration of 644.53 mg L −1 , exceeding most reported values. Furthermore, hydroxyl radicals (•OH), the dominant active species generated through the reactions of Fe 2+ with electro generated H 2 O 2 , promoted the degradation of aniline. Meanwhile, Sb(V) was adsorbed by the ferric hydroxide formed at the anode and finally co-precipitated. The excellent reusability after five cycles and outstanding catalytic activity towards real wastewater demonstrate the superiority of the developed system for treating wastewater in practical applications. This study presents a unique integrated technology and a theoretical foundation for the simultaneous removal of heavy metal–organic compound complexes from wastewater.

Sustainable and exceptional Li+ /Mg2+selectivity through electrocoagulation enhanced triamino guanidine modified membrane

Bin Liu,Xinyue Cui,Xiaozhen Lu,Xuewu Zhu,Lin Wang,Junyong Zhu

Positively charged polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes with sub-nanopores show promise for lithium extraction from salt-lake brines with high Mg 2+ /Li + ratios. This study introduces the use of triamino guanidine (TG), a highly positively charged molecule, to regulate grafting on monolayer PA membranes, resulting in dual-layer (PEI-TMC-TG) NF membranes. The monolayer PA membranes were created via spin-coating assisted interfacial polymerization between polyethyleneimine (PEI) and tricarbonyl chloride (TMC). The PEI/TMC-TG NF membranes exhibited several advantages over unmodified PEI-TMC NF membranes, including higher positive charge density, narrower pore size distribution, excellent hydrophilicity, and a more porous separation layer microstructure. Experimental results indicated that enhanced Donnan effect, size sieving, and dielectric repulsion within the sub-nanopores contributed to exceptional Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity during filtration of East Taijiner brine (S Li + /Mg 2+  = 64.5). Furthermore, the TG hydrophilic layer significantly improved water permeability (15.4 LMH/bar) and long-term stability. To reduce membrane fouling in the charge-positive NF process by removing organic matter from complex salt lake brine, we explored electrocoagulation as a pre-treatment method and identified optimal conditions for the EC-NF process. This strategy maximizes sustainable lithium recovery from brine in an economically viable green manner while enhancing the efficiency of NF membranes for lithium extraction from salt lakes.

Electrocoagulation: A Promising Method to Treat and Reuse Mineral Processing Wastewater with High COD

Gaogui Jing,Shuai Ren,Yuesheng Gao,Wei Sun,Zhiyong Gao

Mineral processing wastewater contains large amounts of reagents which can lead to severe environmental problems, such as high chemical oxygen demand (COD). Inspired by the wastewater treatment in such industries as those of textiles, food, and petrochemistry, in the present work, electrocoagulation (EC) is applied for the first time to explore its feasibility in the treatment of wastewater with an initial COD of 424.29 mg/L from a Pb/Zn sulfide mineral flotation plant and its effect on water reuse. Typical parameters, such as anode materials, current density, initial pH, and additives, were characterized to evaluate the performance of the EC method. The results showed that, under optimal conditions, i.e., iron anode, pH 7.1, electrolysis time 70 min, 19.23 mA/cm2current density, and 4.1 g/L activated carbon, the initial COD can be reduced to 72.9 mg/L, corresponding to a removal rate of 82.8%. In addition, compared with the untreated wastewater, EC-treated wastewater was found to benefit the recovery of galena and sphalerite, with galena recovery increasing from 25.01% to 36.06% and sphalerite recovery increasing from 59.99% to 65.33%. This study confirmed that EC is a promising method for the treatment and reuse of high-COD-containing wastewater in the mining industry, and it possesses great potential for wide industrial applications. Keywords:mineral processing;wastewater treatment;flotation;electrocoagulation (EC);chemical oxygen demand (COD)

Stormwater runoff treatment through electrocoagulation: antibiotic resistant bacteria removal and its transmission risks

XiaoJun Zuo,SongHu Zhang,ShaoJie Chen,Hui Sun

Recently, increasing attention has been paid to antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) in stormwater runoff. However, there were little data on ARB removal through electrocoagulation (EC) treatment. In this study, batch experiments were conducted to investigate key designs for ARB removal, role of SS, effects of water matrix, and potential risks after EC treatment under the pre-determined conditions. EC treatment with 5 mA/cm2 of current density and 4 cm of inter-electrode distance was optimal with the highest ARB removal (3.04 log reduction for 30 min). The presence of SS significantly improved ARB removal during EC treatment, where ARB removal increased with the increase of SS levels when SS less than 300 mg/L. Large ARB removal was found under particles with size lower than 150 μm with low contribution (less than 10%) of the settlement without EC treatment, implying that the enhancement of ARB adsorption onto small particles could be one of the reasonable approaches for ARB removal through EC treatment. ARB removal increased firstly and then decreased with the increase of pH, while had proportional relationship with conductivity. After the optimal condition, there were weak conjugation transfer but high transformation frequency (5.5 × 10−2 for blaTEM) for target antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), indicating that there could be still a risk of antibiotic resistance transformation after EC treatment. These suggested that the combination of EC and other technologies (like electrochemical disinfection) should be potential ways to control antibiotic resistance transmission through stormwater runoff.

Exploring key reaction sites and deep degradation mechanism of perfluorooctane sulfonate via peroxymonosulfate activation under electrocoagulation process

Meng Li,Ce-Hui Mo,Xuan Luo,Ke-Ying He,Jian-Fang Yan,Qiong Wu,Peng-Fei Yu,Wei Han,Nai-Xian Feng,King Lun YEUNG,Shao-Qi Zhou

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), normally present in groundwater and surface water, is an emerging environmental contaminants, but is extremely difficult to be degraded due to high energy of the C-F bond. Here, an electrocoagulation (EC) technique coupled with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation was used to deeply degrade PFOS. Results showed that approximately 100% PFOS was removed from the solution in the monopolar serial (MS) mode within 60 min and achieved a high kinetic rate of 0.074 min −1 , which was significantly higher than those of reported studies (Table S3). Energy consumption (2.06 kWh/kg) in the MS mode was significantly lower than that of Al (52.30 kWh/kg) and Zn (213.50 kWh/kg) electrodes, which further confirmed the potential application prospects of EC technique. The quenching experiments, electron spin response (ESR) analysis, and DFT calculations can verify that ·OH was the main radical from the reaction of Fe 2+ –OH reaction site with PMS. In addition, results from fluorine balance and TOC removal also indicated the complete mineralization and degradation of PFOS in the EC process. Quantum chemical calculations can confirm the PFOS degradation mechanism and key active sites for direct electron transfer and radical attack. After five cycle operations of PFOS degradation, the EC process was still effective in degrading PFOS with a removal efficiency above 98%. Thus, this work provided a novel alternative for the high-effective treatment of PFOS from contaminated environmental water bodies.

The key role of hydrophobic forces during the electrocoagulation of perfluorooctanoic acid substitute (HFPO-TA) revealed by the interfacial thermodynamics

Anlin Xu,Zihao Song,Zhiyi Zhou,Pu Yang,Qiqi Zhang,Yunhai Zhang,Yongjun Zhang

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been widely found in water bodies and may generate negative impacts on the ecosystem. Eectrocoagulation (EC) with a zinc anode is an effective technology to remove PFASs but the dominating interaction forces between zinc flocs and PFASs are still not well elucidated. In this study, we used hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid (HFPO-TA), a new perfluorooctanoic acid substitute, as a model to investigate the influence of EC operational parameters on its removal efficiency, including the current density, the pH value, and the electrolyte type. 99 % removal of 40 μM HFPO-TA were achieved in 3-h at optimal conditions. The extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory was innovatively applied to reveal the interfacial free energies between zinc flocs and HFPO-TA and other PFASs. It was found that the hydrophobic force can significantly promote the adsorption of HFPO-TA on the surface of zinc flocs and a strong correlation may exist between the calculated total interfacial free energies and the pseudo-first-order kinetic constants of removing PFASs. FT-IR spectra indicated the specific interactions occurring between carboxylate head groups and zinc flocs. These findings advance the mechanistic understanding of PFASs removal by metal flocs and could support the development of electrocoagulation for removing PFASs.

Removal of polystyrene microplastics from wastewater by Ti–Al electrode electrocoagulation under pulse current: Efficiency and mechanism

Bin Zheng,Haixia Wu,Min Zhang,Shaohua Lin

As microplastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems continues to rise, research on wastewater treatment methods designed to address microplastics has gained significant attention. To reduce the power consumption of electrocoagulation, this study presents an approach using Ti–Al electrode under pulsed current conditions to address polystyrene (PS) microplastic contamination in wastewater. After selecting the appropriate electrode materials and shapes, we conducted a comprehensive investigation into the effects of various operational parameters—such as initial solution pH, electrolyte concentration, current density, pulse frequency, and pulse duty cycle—on PS removal efficiency. Under optimal conditions (electrode spacing of 1 cm, current density of 4 A·m −2 , pulse duty cycle of 40%, pulse frequency of 500 Hz, initial solution pH of 7, and electrolyte concentration of 0.05 mol·L −1 ), the removal efficiency of PS reached 93.24%, with a power consumption of 0.00977 kWh·mg −1 . Analysis of the resulting flocs revealed that free radicals generated during the electrocoagulation process disrupted the microplastic surfaces and facilitated the formation of Ti and Al flocs, which ultimately removed the microplastics through a combination of adsorption, electro-neutralization, and capture mechanisms. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of Ti electrode electrocoagulation for treating microplastic-laden wastewater and provides valuable insights for advancing microplastic treatment technologies. Practitioner Points Using pulse current electrocoagulation to remove polystyrene microplastics from wastewater. Titanium electrodes outperforms traditional electrodes ()in terms of efficiency and energy consumption. The mechanism for removing polystyrene microplastics using titanium electrodes in pulse current electrocoagulation was proposed. Titanium electrode electrocoagulation is effective in removing microplastics from wastewater and provides a reference for actual wastewater treatment. Graphical Titanium complexes such as Ti 4+ , Ti 3+ , Ti (OH) 2 + , and Ti (OH) 3 + generate during the electrocoagulation process, while alongside aluminum complexes like Al 3+ , Al (OH) 2+ , and Al (OH) 2 + generate. These positively charged species engage in charge neutralization with negatively charged microplastic particles. In addition, [Ti (OH) 4 ] n and [Al (OH) 3 ] n flocculants remove polystyrene particles via adsorption, net trapping, and rolling actions owing to their increased surface functional groups and larger specific surface area.

Mass-producible low-cost flexible electronic fabrics for azo dye wastewater treatment by electrocoagulation

Chaoyi Yin,Jingyuan Ma,Jian Qiu,Ruifang Liu,Long Ba

Electrocoagulation is progressively becoming an ecologically friendly water treatment method owing to its lack of secondary pollution, high active ingredient concentration, high treatment effectiveness, simple equipment, and simplicity of automated control implementation. Herein, electrocoagulation is offered as a method for treating wastewater containing azo dyes using a revolutionary flexible electronic fabric that can be mass-producible at a reasonable price. A computer-controlled machine embroiders 316L stainless steel fiber (316L SSF) onto an insulating fabric to manufacture a flexible electronic device of cathode and anode with a monopolar arrangement on the fabric surface. Using methyl orange (MO) solution to simulate azo dye wastewater, the decolorization rate of 500 ml MO reached 99.25% under the conditions of 50 mg·L −1 initial mass concentration, 120 min electrolysis time, 15 mA·g −1 current density, 1 cm electrode spacing, 0.1 mol·L −1 NaCl, pH 7.6, 200 r·min −1 rotational speed of the stirrer, and 22−25 °C room temperature. In addition, it is feasible to embroider flexible electronic fabrics with varied sizes and numbers of electrodes based on the amount of treated sewage to increase the degradation rate, which has significant practical application value.
