Simultaneous Degradation of Penoxsulam with Power Generation in Microbial Fuel Cells

Jiaran Qi,Xu Yongjie,Chu Gang,Liu Xiaohong,Si Youbin

Abstract The widespread use of penoxsulam has increased the potential for environmental risks. In this study, a microbial fuel cell (MFC) was investigated and optimized for degradation of penoxsulam and corresponding power generation performance. Of the electricity producing bacteria tested, Shewanella putrefaciens was found to be the most suitable, and reached a maximum power of 260.4 mW/m 2 along with a penoxsulam degradation efficiency of 95%. MFC electrical performance was greatly enhanced by increasing the anode carbon felt surface area from 5 to 20 cm 2 , which raised the MFC electrical power from 90.3 to 240.3 mW/m 2 and increased the penoxsulam degradation efficiency in parallel. The initial penoxsulam concentration in the reaction system influenced MFC power generation, where higher initial penoxsulam concentrations inhibited microbial activity, decreased the MFC power performance, and reduced the penoxsulam degradation efficiency. In addition, the MFC reaction system pH influenced MFC electrical performance, and adjusting the pH to 8 increased the peak voltage and power density to 0.687 V and 264.8 mW/m 2 , respectively. S. putrefaciens secretes soluble compounds to mediate electron transfer and the addition of Riboflavin (RF) increases the charge transfer efficiency. Our findings provide a basis for revealing the mechanism by which organic contaminants are degraded in MFCs, and demonstrate the feasibility of MFCs for efficient penoxsulam degradation and power generation.

Electricity Generation by Microbial Fuel Cells Fuelled with Enteromorpha Prolifera Hydrolysis

Min Wang,Zhenhua Yan,Baoxu Huang,Jinsheng Zhao,Renmin Liu

Enteromorpha prolifera bloom caused a series of environmental issues and deterioration due to its rapid growth and ability to grow in fresh or seawater. This study explores the utilization of Enteromorpha prolifera collected from southern portions of the Yellow Sea as a resource for electricity generation by air cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The power density reached 1027 mW/m 2 with an initial hydrolysate concentration of 1,000 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/liter, while coulombic efficiencies and COD removal reached 69.1% and 76.1% respectively. For comparison, three monosaccharides (rhamnose, xylose and glucose) were also tested as the fuels in the anode solution, their power density, coulombic efficiencies and COD removal are almost at the same level. These results indicated that Enteromorpha prolifera might be suitable resources for electricity generation using the MFC technology.

Converting waste liquid crystal polyesters into microporous carbons for generating freshwater and electricity

Qiannan Cheng,Tao Peng,Jie Li,Lijie Liu,Qingquan Tang,Luoxin Wang,Hua Wang,Jiang Gong

With the rapid popularity of liquid crystal polyesters (LCPs) in 5G chip packaging materials, a large amount of waste LCPs were produced. However, the recycling and reutilization of waste LCPs are rarely investigated so far. Herein, the waste LCPs are calcinated by “controlled carbonization” strategy to produce microporous carbons, showing potential in producing freshwater and electricity based on solar-irradiated photothermal conversion. ZnCl 2 /NaCl eutectic salts were used to catalyze the dehydration and decarboxylation of LCPs to form aromatic fragments and then construct microporous carbon skeletons. The resultant carbons show high specific surface areas and solar absorption efficiency. They were used to prepare interfacial solar steam evaporators, showing a high evaporation rate of 2.17 kg/m 2 /h with the energy conversion efficiency of 97.5 % and a high electricity generation with an output power of 0.902 W/m 2 under 1 sun irradiation. This work not only provides a feasible approach to the sustainable conversion of low-cost waste LCPs into valuable carbon materials by a “controlled carbonization” strategy, but also gives impetus to the potential of microporous carbons for application in solar freshwater and electricity generation.

A cation-ion conducting direct alcohol fuel cell: Establishing pH-asymmetric to simultaneous generate electricity and hydrogen

Xianda Sun,Jinxu Hao,Siyi Bao,Xin Ye,Bingye Song,Xuankai Zhang,Yuandong Yang

The huge energy consumption primarily resulting from the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the paramount hindrance in achieving the cost-effectiveness of hydrogen production via water electrolysis. In this work, alcohols are employed to assist the hydrogen production, and the feasibility of coproducing electricity and hydrogen in the cation-exchange membrane direct alcohol fuel cells is conceptually validated. After the performance optimization, the peak power density of 114 mW cm −2 is achieved at the hydrogen generation current density of 230 mA cm −2 . Impressively, the fairly flat 24-h constant current discharge and hydrogen production plots demonstrate the good durability of the proposed hydrogen production device. Moreover, the fuel flexibility of the cation-exchange membrane direct alcohol fuel cells on methanol, ethanol, propanol, iso-propanol and ethylene glycol furthering suggests its application potential. This work proposes an effective strategy for the energy-saving green hydrogen production.

Spatially regulated water-heat transport by fluidic diode membrane for efficient solar-powered desalination and electricity generation

Cao Yuanhang,Wang Jiemin,Guan Weixin,An Meng,Yan Peng,Li Zhengtong,Zhao Changsheng,Yu Guihua

Interfacial solar-driven evaporation has attracted great research interests, given its high conversion efficiency of solar energy and transformative industrial potential for desalination. However, current evaporators with porous volume remain critical challenges by inherently balancing efficient fluid transport and effective heat localization. Herein, we propose the strategy and design of lightweight, flexible and monolayered fluidic diode membrane-based evaporators, featuring regularly arrayed macropores and dense nanopores on each side. Such a delicate microstructure offers universality in establishing asymmetric channels along macroporous-to-nanoporous to enable the diode-like directional water transport as well as facilitate the heat localization on the nanopores side. Consequently, a high evaporation rate of a maximum 3.82 kg m −2  h −1 can be achieved under 1 sun illumination, exceeding most 2D and 3D evaporators. Besides, the durability and practicability of our evaporators are validated through salt resistance tests, purification experiments among various contaminants, and outdoor evaluations. Moreover, the structure engineering and water-transport optimization of fluidic diode membranes also offer potentials for hydrovoltaic applications, with over 1.6 V generated by tandem devices at the ambient environment. This work provides a concept for designing high-performance monolayered membranes applicable in environmental and energy-related realms.

Controllable oxidative depolymerization of lignin to produce aromatic aldehydes and generate electricity under mild conditions with direct biomass fuel cells as flexible reactors

Daihong Gao,Denghao Ouyang,Xuebing Zhao

Lignin was oxidized and depolymerized by a direct biomass fuel cell (DBFC) for electricity generation and production of aromatic aldehydes. The yield of aromatic aldehydes could be easily controlled by changing the anodic catalyst, cathodic oxidants and external loading. Cobalt and (VO 2 ) 2 SO 4 were screened as the most suitable anodic catalyst and cathodic oxidant, respectively. A maximum power density of 199.8 mW/cm 2 was obtained under the optimized conditions for electricity generation; however, the yield of the aromatic aldehydes was greatly dependent on the type of lignin used, reaction conditions and the external loading (output voltage) of the DBFC. At a lignin concentration of 0.5 g/L, aromatic aldehydes yield of 7.8 % was obtained at an output voltage of 0.9 V. The formation of aromatic aldehydes was mainly caused by cleavage of β-O-4 linkage and oxidation of side chains by the hydroxyl radicals formed via oxidation of OH – by Co 3+ on the anode.

Efficient use of waste carton for power generation, tar and fertilizer through direct carbon solid oxide fuel cell

Chaoqi Wang,Zhe Lü,Jingwei Li,Zhiqun Cao,Bo Wei,Huan Li,Minghao Shang,Chaoxiang Su

The rapid development of express logistics industry has yielded more carton wastes, how to utilize them as resources has become an important issue in recent years. In this paper, effective and multifunctional applications of waste carton are explored to obtain products of solid carbon fuel and tar via pyrolysis process . Solid carbon derived from waste carton is utilized as fuel for direct carbon solid oxide fuel cells (DC-SOFCs) with the symmetric perovskite La0.3Sr0.7Fe0.7Ti0.3O3-δ electrodes and scandium stabilized zirconia electrolyte for power generation . The maximum output performance of this DC-SOFC is up to 307.8 mW cm-2 at 850 °C. The cell fueled by 0.2 g carbonated waste carton is operated at constant resistance discharging mode of 20 Ω, and 5.8 h discharging with a capacity of 658 C is represented. Ash of the carton fuel is collected after operation. Infrared spectrum and surface-enhanced Raman spectrum are employed to characterize tar from pyrolysis, and they show that tar contains many organic matters with a potential to be used as chemical raw materials. Energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction results show various inorganic salts and oxides in the ash, it means that the ash may be a promising candidate for fertilizer.

CO2 utilization: Direct power generation by a coupled system that integrates photocatalytic reduction of CO2 with photocatalytic fuel cell

Fengjia Xie,Rong Chen,Xun Zhu,Qiang Liao,Dingding Ye,Biao Zhang,Youxu Yu,Jinwang Li

Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) as greenhouse gas is the primary cause of global warming. One of the ideal routes to remedy CO 2 emission is to transform it to hydrocarbons by photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 . However, poor yield and product selectivity of photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 pose significant challenges to its widespread applications. To address this critical issue, a coupled system that integrates photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 with photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) is developed for direct power generation using CO 2 . In this coupled system, the products by photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 works as the fuels for the PFC to directly generate electricity. Direct power generation by this coupled system is demonstrated via only in the presence of CO 2 as the input under illumination. A short circuit current density of 0.175 mA/cm 2 and a maximum power output of 0.110 mW/cm 2 are yielded for the case with the supply of CO 2 , which are much higher than those without CO 2 . Moreover, it is interesting to find that the fuel concentrations at the PFC outlet are even higher than those at the PFC inlet, implying that the coupled system proposed in this study can not only generate the electricity but also yield the solar fuels. This work opens a new avenue for the CO 2 utilization toward direct power generation.

A dual-functional device based on CB/PVDF@BFP for solar-driven water purification and water-induced electricity generation

Jiangchao Huang,Veronica Pereira,Chenyue Wang,Haitao Li,Hiang Kwee Lee,Jie Han

The efficient utilization of low-grade thermal energy to produce clean water or electricity is important because it potentially relieves our demand on limited natural water and energy resources. Here, we propose a dual-functional device to couple solar-driven water evaporation and evaporation-induced power generation for concurrent production of clean water and green electricity. Our strategy involves the fabrication of an asymmetric, dual-layered structure by spraying a carbon black/polyvinylidene fluoride mixture onto bamboo filter paper (CB/PVDF@BFP). The upper CB/PVDF layer serves as a light-to-thermal transducer for instantaneous heating, while the bottom BFP layer functions as a hydrophilic porous platform to boost water uptake and transfer. Moreover, water evaporation drives capillary flow of ions on the conductive CB/PVDF layer to create a pseudostream that can be harnessed for power generation. Notably, our dual-functional device delivers a fast water evaporation rate of 1.44 kg m−2 h−1 and a high energy utilization rate of 92% under one sun, beyond the previous carbon-based reports. Through this solar-driven water evaporation process, we achieve the efficient desalination of artificial seawater and decontamination of organic-polluted water by up to 99.8% and nearly 100%, respectively. Our device also concurrently produces high, consistent evaporation-induced electrical outputs with VOC and ISC of 0.32 V and 1.5 μA, respectively. The generated electrical outputs can be easily stored by charging a capacitor to over 1.5 V within 15 minutes and be subsequently utilized on demand to power common household electronics. By enabling the efficient coupling of multiple solar-driven processes, our work will catalyze the design of next-generation multifunctional devices to ensure electricity and potable water are easily accessible by everyone, especially remote areas without power stations and/or water treatment facilities.

A solar responsive photocatalytic fuel cell with the membrane electrode assembly design for simultaneous wastewater treatment and electricity generation

Xuefeng He,Ming Chen,Rong Chen,Xun Zhu,Qiang Liao,Dingding Ye,Biao Zhang,Wei Zhang,Youxu Yu

In this work, a photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) with membrane electrode assembly (MEA) structure was designed for simultaneous organic compounds degradation and electricity generation. For the photoanode, the TiO 2 with the quantum-dot sensitization by CdS-ZnS was used to broaden the absorption spectrum to visible light. For the cathode, an air-breathing mode was utilized to enhance the oxygen transport. The performance of the developed PFC was evaluated under different operation conditions, including the light intensity , liquid flow rate, concentrations of electrolyte and organics. Results indicated that the designed PFC could yield good performance. The increase of the light intensity and electrolyte concentration could improve the PFC performance . It is also found that when the flow rate was increased, the PFC performance dropped down in the testing range. Too high organics concentration led to the decrease of the PFC performance.

Boosted thermal redox desalination of seawater driven by gradient of redox electrolyte

Wenning Gao,Dian Zhang,Lu Guo,Danling Tang,Guangguo Ying,Fuming Chen

Electrolyte-based thermal redox desalination (ETRD) offers an alternative approach to freshwater production in regions with limited electricity. However, maintaining the redox electrolyte gradient between the two electrodes has limited its practical application. To address this challenge, we introduce a reactivation ETRD system that employs Fe(CN) 6 4− /Fe(CN) 6 3− electrolytes flowing separately through hot and cold chambers. Electrolyte gradient is sustained through an external reactivation loop utilizing LiFePO 4 and Prussian blue (PB). With the maintained gradient of redox electrolyte, the coupled thermocell achieves a remarkable Seebeck coefficient ( S e ) of 1.88 mV K −1 , an open-circuit voltage of 311 mV at a temperature difference (Δ T ) of 50 K—1.67 times higher than the highest reported value for thermoelectric systems using aqueous Fe(CN) 6 4− /Fe(CN) 6 3− , and a temperature-insensitive maximum power density of 0.635 mW m −2 K −2 . Accordingly, the ETRD device, operating under the maintained electrolyte gradient, exhibits competitive salt removal performance, and can produce freshwater while simultaneously generating electricity, rather than consuming it. Scalability was demonstrated by connecting 10 units in series. This work presents a novel approach to designing high-performance ETRD for efficient low-grade heat harvesting and seawater desalination.

Respective electrode potential characteristics of photocatalytic fuel cell with visible-light responsive photoanode and air-breathing cathode

Qiang Liao,Lin Li,Rong Chen,Xun Zhu,Hong Wang,Dingding Ye,Xiao Cheng,Muxing Zhang,Yuecheng Zhou

Photocatalytic fuel cell is a promising technology for simultaneous wastewater treatment and electricity generation . To more directionally improve the cell performance, a deep understanding of respective photoanode and cathode performances is of vital importance. In this work, therefore, a high-performance photocatalytic fuel cell with a visible-light responsive photoanode and an air-breathing cathode was developed to gain insight into each electrode potential characteristics. The potentials of each electrode were measured under different operational parameters. Experimental results showed that too low fuel concentration led to a serious mass transfer limitation at the photoanode and too high fuel concentration led to a low ionic conductivity , both of which deteriorated the cell performance. Therefore, there existed an optimum fuel concentration to achieve the best cell performance. It was also shown that an increase in the electrolyte concentration markedly improved both the photoanode and cathode performances due to enhanced reaction rates and lowered internal resistance, thereby leading to the increased cell performance. In addition, it was demonstrated that the light intensity significantly affected the photoanode potential and increasing the light intensity boosted the cell performance. The results obtained in this work provide the guidance for improving the photocatalytic fuel cell performance in future applications.
