Ultralow charge–discharge voltage gap of 0.05 V in sunlight-responsive neutral aqueous Zn–air battery

Zhimin Niu,Yan Gao,Tianhui Wu,Fei Zhang,Ran Zhao,Zijia Chen,Yiming Yuan,Tifeng Jiao,Jianmin Gu,Li Lu,Desong Wang

Rechargeable neutral aqueous zinc−air batteries (ZABs) are a promising type of energy storage device with longer operating life and less corrosiveness compared with conventional alkaline ZABs. However, the neutral ZABs normally possess poor oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) and oxygen reduction reactions performance, resulting in a large charge–discharge voltage gap and low round-trip efficiency. Herein, we demonstrate a sunlight-assisted strategy for achieving an ultralow voltage gap of 0.05 V in neutral ZABs by using the FeOOH-decorated BiVO 4 (Fe-BiVO 4 ) as an oxygen catalyst. Under sunlight, the electrons move from the valence band (VB) of Fe-BiVO 4 to the conduction band producing holes in VB to promote the OER process and hence reduce the overpotential. Meanwhile, the photopotential generated by the Fe-BiVO 4 compensates a part of the charging potential of neutral ZABs. Accordingly, the energy loss of the battery could be compensated via solar energy, leading to a record-low gap of 0.05 V between the charge and discharge voltage with a high round-trip efficiency of 94%. This work offers a simple but efficient pathway for solar-energy utilization in storage devices, further guiding the design of high energy efficiency of neutral aqueous ZABs.

Ni3Fe nanoalloys embedded in N-doped carbon derived from dual-metal ZIF: Efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for Zn-air battery

Hongyu Gong,Xiangjun Zheng,Kai Zeng,Bo Yang,Xiu Liang,Le Li,Yuanyuan Tao,Ruizhi Yang

Developing non-noble oxygen electrocatalyst is of great importance in multiple energy conversion and storage technologies, for instance, metal-air battery , fuel cell and water electrolysis . Here, we report a bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst derived from Ni–Fe dual-metal zeolitic imidazole frameworks, Ni 3 Fe nanoalloys embedded in N-doped carbon (Ni 3 Fe/N–C) containing carbon nanotube and porous carbon , which exhibits superior oxygen reduction and evolution reaction electrocatalytic performance. For oxygen reduction reaction , the onset potential and the half-wave potential of Ni 3 Fe/N–C are 0.92 V and 0.85 V, respectively, which are well consistent with those of commercial Pt/C. For oxygen evolution reaction , a low overpotential of 330 mV at 10 mA cm −2 is obtained for Ni 3 Fe/N–C, prominently better than that of commercial RuO 2 /C. Moreover, the oxygen reduction and evolution stability of Ni 3 Fe/N–C distinctly overmatches that of commercial Pt/C and RuO 2 /C. Benefiting from the favorable electrocatalytic activity and stability, the rechargeable Zn–air battery based on Ni 3 Fe/N–C exhibits smaller voltage gap (∼0.8 V) than the one based on commercial Pt/C and RuO 2 /C, and remarkable stability during 300-cycle discharge-charge test. The excellent performance can be attributed to the interaction between Ni 3 Fe nanoalloy and N-doped carbon, the unique nanostructure composed of carbon nanotube and porous carbons, and high graphitization degree.

Decorating carbon nanofibers with Mo2C nanoparticles towards hierarchically porous and highly catalytic cathode for high-performance Li-O2 batteries

Zhen-Dong Yang,Zhi-Wen Chang,Qi Zhang,Keke Huang,Xin-Bo Zhang

A facile synthesis of the hierarchically porous cathode with Mo 2 C nanoparticles through the electrospinning technique and heat treatment is proposed. The carbonization temperature of the precursors is the key factor for the formation of Mo 2 C nanoparticles on the carbon nanofibers (MCNFs). Compared with the Mo 2 N nanoparticles embedded into N-doped carbon nanofibers film (MNNFs) and N-doped carbon nanofibers film (NFs), the battery with MCNFs cathode is capable of operation with a high-capacity (10,509 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 ), a much reduced discharge-charge voltage gap , and a long-term life (124 cycles at 200 mA g −1 with a specific capacity limit of 500 mAh g −1 ). These excellent performances are derived from the synergy of the following advantageous factors: (1) the hierarchically self-standing and binder-free structure of MCNFs could ensure the high diffusion flux of Li + and O 2 as well as avoid clogging of the discharge product, bulk Li 2 O 2 ; (2) the well dispersed Mo 2 C nanoparticles not only afford rich active sites, but also facilitate the electronic transfer for catalysis.

Perovskite nanoparticles@N-doped carbon nanofibers as robust and efficient oxygen electrocatalysts for Zn-air batteries

Haoqing Lin,Jiao Xie,Zhenbao Zhang,Shaofeng Wang,Dengjie Chen

We applied a novel solid-liquid co-electrospinning approach to synthesize hybrid LaCoO 3 perovskite nanoparticles@nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (LCNP@NCNF) as an effective and robust electrocatalyst for Zn-air batteries. LCNP@NCNF featured an integrated structure with well-crystallized perovskite nanoparticles uniformly distributed in micro/mesoporous NCNF. In addition, LCNP@NCNF exhibited a high specific surface area of ~183.3 m 2 g −1 and a large pore volume of ~0.164 m 3 g −1 . The rotating-electrode measurement revealed the better intrinsic activity and more favorable stability of LCNP@NCNF in comparison with their counterparts. Moreover, Zn-air batteries employing LCNP@NCNF showed a relatively smaller discharge-charge voltage gap of ~0.95 V and longer cycling stability than the battery adopting the physically blended LCNP and NCNF. We ascribed the improved electrochemical activity to the enhanced synergistic interaction originating from the successful coupling of LCNP and NCNF.

A highly efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction: Three-dimensionally ordered macroporous perovskite LaMnO3

Haoqing Lin,Peng liu,Shaofeng Wang,Zhenbao Zhang,Ziyang Dai,Shaozao Tan,Dengjie Chen

Perovskite LaMnO 3 is reported to be a superior electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction in terms of the onset potential and intrinsic activity. However, traditionally prepared LaMnO 3 is characterized to exhibit a low specific surface area and a limited pore volume . Herein, we synthesize a three-dimensional ordered macroporous LaMnO 3 that features ordered and interconnected porous structure , in order to increase catalytic sites. The obtained three-dimensional ordered macroporous LaMnO 3 exhibits an increased specific surface area of 20.328 m 2  g −1 and pore volume of 0.126 cm 3  g −1 . Rotating-ring-disk electrode measurement reveals a more positive onset potential (0.827 V) and half-wave potential (0.686 V), and a much higher current-limited density (5.90 mA cm −2 ) of the three-dimensional ordered macroporous LaMnO 3 compared to counterparts, as well as a high electron transfer number (∼4) and a better stability. Furthermore, a Li O 2 battery employing the three-dimensional ordered macroporous LaMnO 3 as air electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance with a higher initial discharge capacity (5592 mAh g −1 ), a smaller discharge-charge voltage gap (1.56 V), and a higher coulombic efficiency (∼100%) in comparison with the carbon electrode. Our results suggest that traditional perovskite oxides could be effectively optimized for efficient electrocatalytic reactions .
