Fabrication of nanofiber yarns via electro-blown and hang-fiber process

Zeng Jun,Chen Ying,Xu Guojie,Shi Zhuohao,Luo Zhifeng,Liu Fengbin,Chen Xiaojie,Zou Zebiao,Wang Han,Du Zhiyun

Continuous nanofiber yarns were prepared using the electro-blown and hanging yarn process. Unlike typical electrospinning devices, this method uniquely controls the spinning process to induce the hanging phenomenon, and the resulting hanging yarn is twisted to form nanofiber yarns. A polyvinylidene fluoride nanofiber yarn was successfully prepared using the electro-blown and hanging yarn process. Scanning electron microscopy observations confirmed that the nanofibers prepared by this method exhibited good orientation within the yarn. The results indicate that the conductivity of the polymer solution and the applied voltage are crucial for inducing the hanging yarn process, ensuring stable continuous spinning. A possible mechanism is proposed, suggesting that adjusting the solution’s conductivity and controlling the spinning voltage can utilize defects in the yarn-hanging process during spinning to prepare nanofiber yarns.

Functionalization of structural materials through electro-blown spinning of ultrathin and transparent silk fibroin ionotronic nanofiber skin

Jinling Zhu,Hailiang Yang,Leitao Cao,Chenchen Dai,Jing Ren,Junrui Liang,Shengjie Ling

Direct functionalization of structural materials can provide an elegant balance between their structure, performance, and function. However, effective direct functionalization techniques are very limited. This work reports a technique to functionalize structural materials in a non-destructive manner, wherein the surface of the materials is selectively etched without compromising their internal structure. In this technique, an ultrathin and transparent silk fibroin ionotronic nanofiber skin (SFINS) is spun on the surface of structural materials through electro-blown spinning, endowing them with electric conductivity and environmental responsiveness. This process is characterized by outstanding scalability, low cost, and high efficiency. In addition, the SFINS can be firmly bonded to the surface of different structural materials, such as glass, metals, polymers, and wood. More importantly, the electro-blown spinning process and the formed SFINS do not alter the structure, properties, and sustainability of the substrate materials . For instance, the transparency of glass and acrylic plates , the texture of wood, the color of plastics, the text of papers, the elasticity of elastomers , as well as their strength are all retained. Consequently, structural materials functionalized under the proposed process can be directly integrated into functional devices that require both structural stability and functional diversity in practice use. In this work, two prototypes are developed to demonstrate the applications of SFINS-functionalized structural materials as tactile receptors for an intelligent sorting manipulator and as a self-powered IntelliSensor for geological hazard early warning. Both examples reveal the advantages of the proposed technique in terms of the balance between the structure, performance, and function of the developed device systems.

Comparison of eugenol and dihydromyricetin loaded nanofibers by electro-blowing spinning for active packaging

Songqi Liu,Zaihan Chen,Huange Zhang,Yuanli Li,Taxipalati Maierhaba,Jianhui An,Zhi Zhou,Lingli Deng

To explore the dihydromyricetin or eugenol loaded nanofiber's potential as food active packaging, 0%, 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1.0% dihydromyricetin or eugenol loaded nanofibers were fabricated by electro-blowing spinning, which increased the yield of nanofibers by a factor of 10 times compared to that of traditional electrospinning. The morphology observation by scanning electron microscopy showed similar morphology and diameter distribution of the dihydromyricetin or eugenol nanofibers. Fourier transform infrared spectra analysis indicated that eugenol or dihydromyricetin interacted with proteins through hydrogen bonding. X-ray diffraction profiles of the nanofibers indicated that dihydromyricetin was uniformly distributed within the nanofibers. Nanofibers encapsulated with various concentrations of eugenol or dihydromyricetin showed better barrier properties against water vapors than the free nanofibers, which indicated that the hydrophobic eugenol and dihydromyricetin inhibited the permeation of water molecules through the nanofibers. Tensile tests showed that the nanofibers loaded with 0.5% eugenol or 1.0% dihydromyricetin exhibited relatively higher elastic moduli and lower elongation at break. The nanofibers loaded with dihydromyricetin showed comparable antioxidant activity to that with eugenol in the aspect of ferric and cupper reducing activity, while that with 0.1%–1.0% dihydromyricetin showed superior DPPH radical scavenging activity. Furthermore, both eugenol and dihydromyricetin loaded gelatin/zein nanofibers showed effective antimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . Overall, the dihydromyricetin loaded gelatin/zein nanofibers showed comparable physical and functional properties compared to eugenol, which suggests the application of dihydromyricetin nanofibrous films on food active packaging and the potential application of dihydromyricetin on functional food delivery systems.
