Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is one of the key research directions for future human-computer interaction (HCI), biomedicine, and environmental protection. Bio-based materials are an essential branch of many degradable materials. Keratin has attracted much attention due to its advantages of easy access, biodegradability, and good biocompatibility . A highly sensitive single-electrode TENG (S-TENG) based on CaCl 2 /PVA/keratin and Ecoflex with micro-domes is designed. The excellent stability (18,000 cycles) and stretchability (200%) of the sensor are confirmed by research. Moreover, the presence of CaCl 2 and keratin can significantly increase the S-TENG's output voltage, and the reason is also explored by the density functional theory (DFT) method. Through simulation, it is found that the decrease of the HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital)-LUMO (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) gap and the increase of the electrostatic potential are the root causes of the voltage increase. Relying on the excellent characteristics of the S-TENG, finger curvatures, gestures, and object shapes are recognized. Among them, the accuracy of object shape recognition by machine learning algorithm reached 98.1%. This study provides a new method for improving the output efficiency and prolonging the service life of S-TENG and confirms the feasibility of the electron cloud trap model to explain biomass triboelectric materials by keratin and CaCl 2 .

Carbon dots (CDs) have a wide light absorption range, which are promising candidates for photocatalytic water splitting H 2 evolution, but they show low activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to the slow transfer efficiencies of photogenerated carriers. The electron cloud density of photocatalyst is essential for the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. In this study, the effect mechanism of electron cloud density regulated by the substituents with different electronic effects on the photocatalytic HER of glucose-based CDs is clarified. CDs-SO 3 H and CDs-OH are first obtained by introducing electron-drawing group (─SO 3 H) and electron-donating group (─OH) using a tailoring post-processing strategy. Experimental results show that the H 2 yield catalyzed by CDs-SO 3 H is 89.95 µmol•g −1 in 4 h, which is about four times that of CDs, and 7.4 times that of CDs-OH. The ─SO 3 H induces a much negative energy band and high electron cloud density on CDs edges, promoting the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers; while the CDs-OH exhibits a high positive charge density and an upward energy band, hindering the surface complexation of electron-hole pairs and HER. This study will provide an insight into the design of CDs catalysts with efficient photocatalytic HER at a molecular level.

Fluorescent polymers without non-conventional luminescent units have attracted great attention due to their excellent biocompatible. In this paper, we fabricated a kind of nonconjugated hyperbranched polycarbonate (HBPC) through one-pot transesterification method using diethyl carbonate and trimethylolpropane under solvent and catalyst-free condition. Unexpectedly, the HBPC can exhibit bright blue photoluminescence without any treatment under a 365 nm UV light. The results show that the fluorescence of HBPC in ethanol displays the excitation- and concentration-dependent behaviors. In addition, its fluorescence exhibits an aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE) effect in water-ethanol system. The fluorescence emission behaviors of HBPC can be well rationalized by the clustering-induced emission (CIE) mechanism. In other words, the fluorescence is caused by the electron cloud overlap within the clustering of carbonate groups. The TEM images further reveal that the rigidity conformation of HBPC was formed in the higher concentration because of the existence of hydrogen bonds. Besides, the ball and stick model firstly simulates the HBPC emission behavior.

The utilization of semiconductor graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) for organic pollutant degradation represents an eco-friendly remediation. Presently, the focus of modification strategies for gCN primarily revolves around element doping, heterojunction, and morphology, with little attention given to embellishing its intrinsic framework. Herein, a novel gCN-based privileged photocatalyst was established through controllable nitrogen-hydrogen bond addition/elimination and acylation reactions. Compared to pristine gCN, structurally decorated gCN-A exhibits a larger specific surface area, enhanced fluorescence lifetime, extended visible light response range, and narrow bandgap, which is beneficial to accelerating photon-generated carrier separation and facilitating stable electron migration. Meanwhile, gCN-A demonstrates moderate to strong degradation performance against 5 different organic pollutants, particularly Rhodamine B (98.54%/6 min) and Tetracycline (87.86%/10 min). •O2– was validated as the principal reactive species in organic contamination removal by electron spin resonance and scavenger experiments. Encouragingly, among the three antibacterial bioassays, gCN-A displays the best inhibitory performance against Pseudomonas syringae pv actinidiae (100%), while also degrading the corresponding antimicrobial. Theoretical calculations revealed that modifying the nitrogen-hydrogen bonds in gCN alters electron cloud density distribution and promotes electron-hole separation. Overall, current study provides a promising perspective on constructing multifunctional photocatalysts for degrading contaminants and inactivating pathogens through covalent modification.

Developing photoelectrochemical biosensors via efficient photogenerated-charge separation remains a challenging task in biomolecular detection. In this study, we utilised a simple approach for constructing an efficient photoactive organic–inorganic heterojunction interface composed of SrTiO3 with high photocatalytic activity and polydopamine (PDA) with high biocompatibility and electrical conductivity. Gold nanoparticles with dense electron cloud properties were introduced as a bridge between SrTiO3 and PDA (SrTiO3/Au/PDA). The Au bridge allowed the PDA to uniformly and tightly attach on the surface of SrTiO3 electrodes and also provided a separate transmission channel for electrons from PDA to SrTiO3. The rapidly transmitted electrons were captured by a signal-acquisition system, thereby improving the photocurrent signal output. The 3D hollowed out SrTiO3/Au/PDA biosensor manufactured herein was used for glucose detection. The biosensor achieved ultrahigh sensitivities reaching 23.7 μA mM−1 cm−2, an extended linear range (1–20 mM), and a low detection limit (0.012 mM). The excellent results of glucose analysis in serum samples further confirmed the feasibility of the biosensor in clinical applications. In summary, the proposed strategy allowed for the use of an electronic cloud bridge in the construction of glucose biosensors with satisfactory performances, which is promising for the future fabrication of high-performance biosensors.

Changeable substituent groups of organic molecules can provide an opportunity to clarify the antibacterial mechanism of organic molecules by tuning the electron cloud density of their skeleton. However, understanding the antibacterial mechanism of organic molecules is challenging. Herein, we reported a molecular view strategy for clarifying the antibacterial switch mechanism by tuning electron cloud density of cinnamaldehyde molecule skeleton. The cinnamaldehyde and its derivatives were self-assembled into nanosheets with excellent water solubility, respectively. The experimental results show that α-bromocinnamaldehyde (BCA) nanosheets exhibits unprecedented antibacterial activity, but there is no antibacterial activity for α-methylcinnamaldehyde nanosheets. Therefore, the BCA nanosheets and α-methylcinnamaldehyde nanosheets achieve an antibacterial switch. Theoretical calculations further confirmed that the electron-withdrawing substituent of the bromine atom leads to a lower electron cloud density of the aldehyde group than that of the electron-donor substituent of the methyl group at the α-position of the cinnamaldehyde skeleton, which is a key point in elucidating the antimicrobial switch mechanism. The excellent biocompatibility of BCA nanosheets was confirmed by CCK-8. The mouse wound infection model, H&E staining, and the crawling ability of drosophila larvae show that as-prepared BCA nanosheets are safe and promising for wound healing. This study provides a new strategy for the synthesis of low-cost organic nanomaterials with good biocompatibility. It is expected to expand the application of natural organic small molecule materials in antimicrobial agents.

With the development of the Internet of Things and intelligent robots, there is an increasing demand for distributed flexible sensor networks and portable power devices. As a self-powered sensor and micro/nano powering supplier, triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) that can convert the irregular and ubiquitous mechanical energy into electrical energy demonstrates promising applications in human–machine interaction, soft robotics, wearable healthcare, etc. However, achieving ultrahigh current density and water resistance in TENGs remains challenging, mainly due to the non-utilization of the electrons in the interior of triboelectric layers. Herein, it is proposed that linking the electron cloud potential wells (ECPWs) of triboelectric materials can lead to a huge increase in the output current of TENGs. This hypothesis is verified by embedding a conductive network of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) into the triboelectric layers of ethyl cellulose (EC) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The TENG based on this model demonstrates a record-high current density of ≈3533 mA m −2 among the TENGs working in contact-separation mode. In addition, this TENG shows excellent endurance in high-humidity and even rainy environments. This work provides a novel and promising strategy for fabricating TENGs with ultrahigh output current and water resistance, largely expanding their practical applications in many fields.

Precise construction of proton transfer pathways and modulation of proton carrier microenvironments are crucial for achieving high proton conduction in proton exchange membranes (PEMs). Despite extensive efforts to tailor these microenvironments, the underlying regulation of electron cloud density around proton carriers, intrinsically linked to proton conduction, remains largely overlooked. Herein, MIL-53-SO 3 H-X (X = –F, –Br, –H, –CH 3 ) nanosheets are synthesized via solvothermal coordination of Cr 3+ ions with functionalized terephthalic acid (BDC-X) ligands, followed by post-synthetic sulfonation at unsaturated Cr 3+ sites to anchor –SO 3 H groups. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results reveal that electron-withdrawing –F groups enhance the electron cloud density around –SO 3 H sites, shortening transfer distance, aligning water molecules, and lowering the proton transfer barrier. Conversely, electron-donating –CH 3 groups deplete the electron cloud density in the –SO 3 H region, disrupting proton transport pathways. The MIL-53-SO 3 H-F nanosheet achieves an intrinsic proton conductivity of 298.3 mS cm −1 at 80 °C and 98% RH, a 4.5-fold increase over MIL-53-SO 3 H-CH 3 nanosheets (65.5 mS cm −1 ), as measured by the comb electrode. The corresponding lamellar membrane delivers a high peak power density of 734.8 mW cm −2 and remains stable for over 100 h in H 2 /O 2 PEM fuel cells (PEMFCs).

MXene materials emerge as promising candidates for energy harvesting and storage application. In this study, the effect of the surface chemistry on the work function of MXenes, which determines the performance of MXene-based triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), is elucidated. First-principles calculations reveal that the surface functional group greatly influences MXene work function: OH termination reduces the work function with respect to that of bare surface, while F and Cl increase it. Then, work functions are experimentally determined by Kelvin probe force microscopy. The MXene prepared by gentle etching at 40 °C for 48 h (GE 40/48 ) has the largest work function. Furthermore, an electron-cloud potential-well model is established to explain the mechanism of electron emission-dominated charge transfer and assemble a triboelectric device to verify experimentally its conclusions. It is found that GE 40/48 has the best performance with a 281 V open-circuit voltage, 9.7 µ A short-current current, and storing 1.019 µ C of charge, which is consistent with the model. Last, a patterned TENG is demonstrated for self-powered human–machine interaction application. This finding enhances the understanding of the inherent mechanism between the surface structure and the output performance of MXene-based TENG, which can be applied to other TENG based on 2D materials.

The output performance of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) largely depends on the density of electrons on the surface of the triboelectric materials, which is usually generated by the direct contact of two solid materials. Here, a novel method is proposed to regulate the surface charges of materials without physical contact. A laser-tunable noncontact triboelectric nanogenerator (LTNC-TENG) is fabricated, enabling the dynamic regulation of the surface states of materials through laser irradiation to optimize the performance of TENGs. In the experiment, TiO2, SiO2, and VO2 LTNC-TENGs are designed and prepared. The results show that under low-energy laser irradiation, the open-circuit voltage (VOC) and short-circuit transferred charge (QSC) increase, primarily due to the enhancement of the surface state energy levels induced by laser irradiation. As the laser energy increases beyond the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of the films, induced damage occurs, generating abundant high-temperature plasma and resulting in decreased VOC and QSC. Building upon these findings, a single-electrode mode LTNC-TENG is developed where voltage jumps occur when laser energy exceeds the film’s LIDT. Furthermore, an electron cloud-potential well model is proposed, describing the approach of atoms from two different materials under laser irradiation without direct contact. This model elucidates the detailed mechanism of laser-induced charge transfer and reveals the “precursor” process of contact electrification. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms of contact electrification and provides a theoretical foundation for the development of more advanced and noncontact TENGs, with largely enhanced lifetime.

Photocatalytic H 2 production from seawater splitting is a promising method for sustainable energy conversion technology. The vanadium-oxygen binary doped carbon nitride (VO X -CN) is successfully prepared for H 2 production. Benefiting from the electronic structure alteration, the maximum H 2 yield on VO X -CN in artificial seawater reaches 4475.74 μmol h −1 g −1 , 10 times higher than that of CN in deionized water. The impact of ions on the photocatalytic activity of VO 2 -CN is followed by Na + > Mg 2+ > K + > Ca 2+ . The adsorption of electrolyte ions promotes the formation of delocalized electron clouds on the surface of VO 2 -CN, facilitating more electrons to participate in H + reduction. Screening based on six machine models, the decision tree regression algorithm is used to reveal the interaction between cation type, their concentration and H 2 yield. Pearson heatmap indicates that Na + , Mg 2+ , and K + ions are positively correlated with H 2 yield, whereas Ca 2+ shows a negative correlation. The interactions among Na + , Mg 2+ and K + atoms facilitate H 2 production in multi-ion system, whereas Ca 2+ ions do the opposite, especially for high concentration. This work proposes new insights into the interference on H 2 yield between the structure alteration of CN framework and the change of ion type and concentration.

For I 2 cathodes, the severe polyiodide shuttling and sluggish reaction kinetics result in unsatisfactory cycling lifespan and rate performance. Herein, a bifunctional electrophilic host is designed by engineering the electron cloud density to effectively anchor electron-rich polyiodides. Three configurations are initially screened through density functional theory simulations, which reveal that Si─O bonds can firmly anchor I 3 − via Si electrophilic centers. Owing to the considerably lower electronegativity of Si (1.90) than that of O (3.44), electrons surrounding Si atoms are strongly drawn toward O atoms, creating Si electrophilic centers. Specifically, I 3 − adsorbed onto Si─O bonds exhibits a favorable orbital configuration with a low energy gap, thereby kinetically enhancing polyiodide conversion. As a proof of concept, SiO 2 nanocrystals embedded in conductive microporous bio-carbon are derived from poplar flowers. The resulting I 2 cathodes demonstrate excellent cycling stability over 110 000 cycles at 4 A g −1 and a high rate performance with a capacity of 123.8 mAh g −1 at 100 C. Furthermore, the I 2 cathode with a loading as high as 36.5 mg cm −2 can also perform well in terms of 127.6 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles. This study presents a new route for the rational design of high-efficiency and sustainable hosts for I 2 cathodes.
