The concepts of quantum interference and charge localization have profoundly influenced the understanding of electronic conductivity in materials. While magnetoresistance behavior with monotonic or singly transitional dependence on applied magnetic fields is widely observed in different materials, it remains scarce to find one that features multiple transitions in magnetoresistance. Here, the effects of dimensional crossover on electronic and magneto-transport behavior in vanadium disulfide (VS 2 ) are reported. Dual transitions in magnetoresistance are observed in 5 nm VS 2 nanosheets, resulting from the competition of multiple mechanisms relevant to charge transport as the external magnetic field changes. The nontrivial magneto-transport phenomenon revealed in the system is attributed to the effect of strong electron correlation and the delicate interplay among spin, orbital, and structural degrees of freedom. These appealing physical properties make 2D VS 2 a promising platform for exploring exotic electronic phenomena.

Elucidating the electronic factors dominating the adsorption properties of transition-metal oxides is essential to construct highly efficient oxygen-evolving catalysts for hydrogen production by water splitting but remains a great challenge. Electron correlation from on-site Coulomb repulsion (U) among d-electrons is generally believed to significantly affect the electronic structure of these materials; however, it has long been neglected in studying their adsorption properties. Here, by choosing ruthenium oxide as a model system, we demonstrate the role of electron correlation on the electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Our density functional theory plus U calculations on rutile RuO2 reveal that the electron correlation can tune the adsorption energies for oxygenated intermediate and optimize them after the metallic oxide being a Mott insulator upon increasing U. By regulating the RuO6 octahedral network, we constructed and synthesized a series of strongly correlated ruthenium oxides, where the Mott insulating ones indeed exhibit a superior OER performance to the metallic RuO2. Our work builds a bridge between the electrochemistry and Mott physics for transition-metal oxides, opening a new avenue for designing advanced catalysts.

Multiband and nodal-like superconductivity (SC) with s- + d-wave pairing symmetry have implied that tetragonal iron sulphide (FeS) is a distinctive testbed for exploring unexpected electronic correlations. In particular, the low-moment disordered static magnetism originating from the Fe moment leads to the possibility of the coexistence of magnetic orders (MOs) in the superconducting ground state via the tuning of electronic configurations. Here, guided by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we found that slightly substitutionally doped chromium (Cr) atoms in tetragonal FeS single crystals can induce both considerable d-orbital reconstruction around the Fermi surface and a local magnetic moment of 2.4µBat each doping site, which could highly modulate the SC ground states of the host. On this basis, a clear magnetic transition and reduced anisotropy of SC were experimentally observed. In particular, SC can survive with a doping content below 0.05. This coexistence of SC and MOs suggests strong spin correlations between Cr dopants and the host through exchange coupling. Further, an electronic temperature-related phase diagram of FeS with Cr doping contents from 0 to 0.07 is also provided. These results demonstrate that the continuous injection of local moments can be a controllable method to use to tune collective orders in unconventional iron-based superconductors.

The interplay of electron correlations and topological phases gives rise to various exotic phenomena including fractionalization, excitonic instability and axionic excitation. Recently discovered transition-metal pentatellurides can reach the ultra-quantum limit in low magnetic fields and serve as good candidates for achieving such a combination. Here, we report evidence of density wave and metal-insulator transition in HfTe5 induced by intense magnetic fields. Using the non-linear transport technique, we detect a distinct non-linear conduction behavior in the longitudinal resistivity within the a–c plane, corresponding to the formation of a density wave induced by magnetic fields. In high fields, the onset of non-linear conduction in the Hall resistivity indicates an impurity-pinned magnetic freeze-out as the possible origin of the insulating behavior. These frozen electrons can be gradually reactivated into mobile states above a threshold of electric field. This experimental evidence calls for further investigation into the underlying mechanism of the bulk quantum Hall effect and field-induced phase transitions in pentatellurides.

Metallic few-layered 1T phase vanadium disulfide nanosheets have been employed for boosting sodium ion batteries. It can deliver a capacity of 241 mAhg−1 at 100 mAg−1 after 200 cycles. Such long-term stability is attributed to the facile ion diffusion and electron transport resulting from the well-designed two-dimensional (2D) electron-electron correlations among V atoms in the 1T phase and optimized in-planar electric transport. Our results highlight the phase engineering into electrode design for energy storage.

Superconductivity in a highly correlated kagome system has been theoretically proposed for years (refs. 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ), yet the experimental realization is hard to achieve 6 , 7 . The recently discovered vanadium-based kagome materials 8 , which exhibit both superconductivity 9 , 10 , 11 and charge-density-wave orders 12 , 13 , 14 , are nonmagnetic 8 , 9 and weakly correlated 15 , 16 . Thus these materials are unlikely to host the exotic superconductivity theoretically proposed. Here we report the discovery of a chromium-based kagome metal, CsCr 3 Sb 5 , which is contrastingly featured with strong electron correlations, frustrated magnetism and characteristic flat bands close to the Fermi level. Under ambient pressure, this kagome metal undergoes a concurrent structural and magnetic phase transition at 55 K, with a stripe-like 4 a 0 structural modulation. At high pressure, the phase transition evolves into two transitions, possibly associated with charge-density-wave and antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave orderings. These density-wave-like orders are gradually suppressed with pressure and, remarkably, a superconducting dome emerges at 3.65–8.0 GPa. The maximum of the superconducting transition temperature, T c max = 6.4 K, appears when the density-wave-like orders are completely suppressed at 4.2 GPa, and the normal state exhibits a non-Fermi-liquid behaviour, reminiscent of unconventional superconductivity and quantum criticality in iron-based superconductors 17 , 18 . Our work offers an unprecedented platform for investigating superconductivity in correlated kagome systems.

2D single-element materials, which are pure and intrinsically homogeneous on the nanometer scale, can cut the time-consuming material-optimization process and circumvent the impure phase, bringing about opportunities to explore new physics and applications. Herein, for the first time, the synthesis of ultrathin cobalt single-crystalline nanosheets with a sub-millimeter scale via van der Waals epitaxy is demonstrated. The thickness can be as low as ≈6 nm. Theoretical calculations reveal their intrinsic ferromagnetic nature and epitaxial mechanism: that is, the synergistic effect between van der Waals interactions and surface energy minimization dominates the growth process. Cobalt nanosheets exhibit ultrahigh blocking temperatures above 710 K and in-plane magnetic anisotropy. Electrical transport measurements further reveal that cobalt nanosheets have significant magnetoresistance (MR) effect, and can realize a unique coexistence of positive MR and negative MR under different magnetic field configurations, which can be attributed to the competition and cooperation effect among ferromagnetic interaction, orbital scattering, and electronic correlation. These results provide a valuable case for synthesizing 2D elementary metal crystals with pure phase and room-temperature ferromagnetism and pave the way for investigating new physics and related applications in spintronics.

The delicate interplay among the complex intra/inter-layer electron–electron and electron–lattice interactions is the fundamental prerequisite of these exotic quantum states, such as superconductivity, nematic order, and checkerboard charge order. Here, we explore the filling-dependent multiple stable intertwined electronic and atomic orders of the flat-band state of 1T-TaS2 encompassing hole order, phase orders, coexisting left- and right-chiral orders, and mixed phase/chiral orders via scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Combining first-principles calculations, the emergent electronic/atomic orders can be attributed to the weakening of electron–electron correlations and stacking-dependent interlayer interactions. Moreover, achiral intermediate ring-like clusters and nematic charge density wave (CDW) states are successfully realized in intralayer chiral domain wall and interlayer heterochiral stacking regions through chiral overlap configurations. Our study not only deepens the understanding of filling-dependent electronic/atomic orders in flat-band systems but also offers perspectives for exploring exotic quantum states in correlated electronic systems.
