To address resources shortage and environmental degradation, noble metal recovery from e-waste is in desperate need. Herein, to achieve selective extraction of gold (Au) and palladium (Pd) from practical e-waste, a series of tridentate thioether extractants are designed with ester functional groups at both ends of the thioether. By varying the chain length of the ester alkyl, the relationship between extractant structure and performance is further explored. The results indicate that the as-introduced tridentate structure facilitate the Au(III) and Pd(II) extraction, demonstrating a complex mechanism involving both coordination substitution and ion association. Notably, the extractant with the shortest carbon chain length and smallest molecular weight delivers outstanding extraction capacities of 920.2 mg/g for Au(III) and 280.7 mg/g for Pd(II). More importantly, it exhibits superior selectivity (∼100 %) for Au(III) and Pd(II) in complex metal solutions. This work guides the design of thioether-based extractants for sustainable recovery of noble metal from practical e-waste.

Poly(m-phenylenediamine) has a wide range of applications in adsorption due to its high amino content; however, its nanoparticles tend to aggregate in water and are not easily separated from aqueous solutions. In this research, a soft and easily separable adsorbent material was successfully prepared by cross-linking poly(m-phenylenediamine) and chitosan through hydrogen bonding. Experimental results showed that the prepared chitosan and poly(m-phenylenediamine) hybrid membrane (CS/PmPD) could selectively reduce Au(III) from a mixture of multiple metal ions (Cu2+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Cd2+, and Au(III)). The maximum treatment capacity of Au(III) reached 410 mg g−1 under optimal adsorption conditions (pH = 3.0 and adsorption time of 120 min). The CS/PmPD membrane can be regnerated after rinsing with sodium bisulfite solution, and its performance remains stable after multiple cycles. In addition, the membrane has achieved satisfactory results in treating the actual CPU gold-containing leachate. Therefore, the CS/PmPD membrane has a promising application in gold recovery from electronic wastes.

With environmental problems and a shortage of resources, it is urgent to recover gold from electronic waste (e-waste). Meanwhile, it is necessary to explore the relationships between the structures and extraction performances of ionic liquids (ILs) to further improve the extraction capacities of ILs for gold. Herein, three pyrrolidinium-based ILs with various N-substituents were synthesized for solvent-free extraction of Au(III). The three pyrrolidinium-based ILs exhibited ultrahigh extraction capacities for Au(III) with the order of [Pyr-EA][NTf2] (524.6 mg·g–1) > [Pyr-Bu][NTf2] (457.3 mg·g–1) > [Pyr-C2OC2][NTf2] (403.5 mg·g–1). The effects of N-substituents on extraction performances were quantitatively investigated by electrostatic potential (ESP) and quantitative NMR. Among them, the ester group (−COOR) is the most beneficial to the extraction process, which is associated with an increased ESP value and boosted hydrophobicity. Notably, [Pyr-EA][NTf2] displayed outstanding selectivity in multimetal solutions; especially, it could selectively and efficiently extract Au(III) from the actual CPU. Furthermore, [Pyr-EA][NTf2] possesses significant reuseability and can maintain superior extraction efficiency of 84.3% after five cycles. These excellent performances together with low cost ($0.44·g–1 [Pyr-EA][NTf2]) and considerable profit ($29.72·g–1 [Pyr-EA][NTf2]) confirmed that [Pyr-EA][NTf2] is a promising prospect for sustainable recovery of gold from e-waste.

Developing magnetic adsorbents with superior adsorption capability has always been a massive challenge. Herein, an in-situ growth strategy was implemented to build polydopamine-encapsulated lightweight hollow magnetic microspheres and used to achieve selective recovery of gold from e-waste. The fabricated magnetic-dielectric microspheres, including hollow magnetic polydopamine microspheres (HMPM) and hollow magnetic polydopamine microspheres modified by allyl thiourea (HMPM&A), exhibited excellent gold adsorption capacities of 1205 mg g −1 and 1766 mg g −1 , respectively at 298 K. The adsorption capacity was amazingly upsurged up to 1850 mg g −1 and 2715 mg g −1 under ultraviolet light, respectively, which is relatively enhanced compared to other reported magnetic adsorbents. The XPS survey and DFT calculations confirmed that Au(III) ions adsorption principally attributed to electrostatic interaction of N sites under acidic mediums and chelating interaction between Au(III) and S,N chelating site of thiourea groups, followed by subsequent reduction of Au(III) into to Au(0) with thiourea and dopamine units. The developed magnetic adsorbent showed impressive chemical stability for Au(III) adsorption up to eight consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles without any noticeable change in adsorption performance. The recovery rate of HMPM&A for Au(III) ions from actual samples was better up to 86.7 %. This work will broaden the construction strategy of magnetic adsorbents and promote the application of magnetic materials as an efficient functional material.

In this study, a recovery strategy of turning cathode materials of waste lithium-ion batteries, lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2), into high-performance catalysts for the oxidation of airborne benzene is investigated. Part of the Co3+ in LiCoO2 was leached out from the [CoO6] octahedra by HNO3 solution via the disproportion reaction with the deintercalation of interlayer Li+ ions, resulting in the formations of Li, Co, and O vacancies. The presence of Li and O vacancies facilitated gaseous benzene adsorption and subsequent activation of adsorbed benzene, and the Co vacancies together with the oxygen vacancies induced the generation of plenty of active surface oxygen species, accordingly the catalytic activity of the acid-modified LiCoO2 was greatly improved with good resistance to the alternative “heating-cooling” operation and stability from 0.8 to 2.3 vol % of humidity. More importantly, the acid modification process is green since the HNO3 solution could be reused many times to produce effective catalysts, and the final solution containing high concentrations of Li+ and Co2+ ions could be potentially recycled for cathode material manufacturing. The acid treatment method also worked effectively with the commercial LiCoO2. This study would inspire the development of novel and sustainable catalytic systems for environmental applications.

Traditional metal–organic frameworks, characterized by their micropore-dominated structures, suffer from severe pore channel blockage during gold ion recovery due to the aggregation of gold nanoparticles, significantly reducing the utilization rate of adsorption sites. To address this issue, we developed hierarchically porous MOFs through ligand removal and metal exchange strategies, precisely installing adsorption sites within meso/macropores to effectively prevent pore obstruction by adsorbed-reduced gold particles. Subsequent Metal substitution further enhanced the material’s aqueous stability, enabling retention of 93 % adsorption capacity after 5 cycles while preserving the precisely engineered pore structure. The functionalized HP-MOF-5/DU achieves an ultrahigh Au(III) capacity of 1566 mg/g, rapid kinetics, and exceptional selectivity. Practical validation demonstrates 85 % gold recovery from real electronic waste leachates, with calcination yielding gold particles of 23.7 K purity. Through rational regulation of pore channel structures at adsorption sites, we have significantly enhanced the material’s Au(III) adsorption performance, pioneering a novel direction for the design of reducible metal-targeted adsorbents.

Electronic waste (e-waste) and diabetes are global challenges to modern societies. However, solving these two challenges together has been challenging until now. Herein, we propose a laser-induced transfer method to fabricate portable glucose sensors by recycling copper from e-waste. We bring up a laser-induced full-automatic fabrication method for synthesizing continuous heterogeneous Cu x O (h-Cu x O) nano-skeletons electrode for glucose sensing, offering rapid (< 1 min), clean, air-compatible, and continuous fabrication, applicable to a wide range of Cu-containing substrates. Leveraging this approach, h-Cu x O nano-skeletons, with an inner core predominantly composed of Cu 2 O with lower oxygen content, juxtaposed with an outer layer rich in amorphous Cu x O (a-Cu x O) with higher oxygen content, are derived from discarded printed circuit boards. When employed in glucose detection, the h-Cu x O nano-skeletons undergo a structural evolution process, transitioning into rigid Cu 2 O@CuO nano-skeletons prompted by electrochemical activation. This transformation yields exceptional glucose-sensing performance (sensitivity: 9.893 mA mM −1 cm −2 ; detection limit: 0.34 μM), outperforming most previously reported glucose sensors. Density functional theory analysis elucidates that the heterogeneous structure facilitates gluconolactone desorption. This glucose detection device has also been downsized to optimize its scalability and portability for convenient integration into people’s everyday lives.

Research into advanced adsorbents is one of the most promising ways to recycle precious metals from electronic wastes and minerals owing to their high uptake capacity, low maintenance requirements, and ease of use. Herein, a new adsorbent, MXene hybrid aerogels (MXGA), were successfully prepared by means of a hydrothermal reactor with the assistance of graphene oxide (GO) and a freezing-induced assembly method. The MXGA and pure MXene aerogel (MXA) displayed high selectivity to Au(III) ( K d = 2.61 × 10 6 for MXGA; K d = 3.23 × 10 5 for MXA) and Ag(I) ( K d = 2.03 × 10 5 for MXGA; K d = 1.76 × 10 8 for MXA) in a mixture of multiple metal ions. In addition, the trapping capability of MXGA (1063.8 mg/g) and MXA (1851.8 mg/g) for Au(III) was encouragingly high. The capture mechanism was investigated, where a surface complexation from oxygen-containing functional groups was proposed for Ag (I), and the sorption-redox process and electrostatic attraction in MXGA were proposed for Au(III) adsorption. A trapping efficiency of 99.9% for Au(III) by MXA was achieved within 1 min through the redox–capture process. Au(III) and Ag(I) captured on MXA and MXGA were rapidly trapped and the sorbent reused for more than five cycles, without a significant decrease in its capture capacity. Notably, compared with the capture ability at room temperature, MXGA architectures could also maintain superior capture and enrichment capabilities at temperatures as low as 0 °C. This unique property endowed the 3D MXene hybrid architectures with the promising ability to trap gold and silver from ores and electronic waste, providing a new method for the development of green platforms for noble metals regeneration.

Amidst the rapid proliferation of electronic products, an urgent need arises for the efficient retrieval of gold from unconventional sources like electronic waste. This study introduces a straightforward approach for crafting a range of magnetic POSS adsorbents functionalized with monothioglycerol (Fe 3 O 4 @POSS-MTG x ), demonstrating effective and selective Au(III) capture from aqueous solutions. The resulting Fe 3 O 4 @POSS-MTG 3 showcases a mesoporous structure with a specific surface area of 113.24 m 2 g −1 and a pore size distribution of 4.9 nm. Batch adsorption experiments underscore the high adsorption capacity of Fe 3 O 4 @POSS-MTG 3 , reaching 363.57 mg g −1 , alongside a rapid gold recovery rate (achieving 90.6 % of equilibrium adsorption capacity within 4 h). The impact of Fe 3 O 4 @POSS-MTG 3 on the adsorption capacity of Au(III) under varying light conditions was further examined, revealing an adsorption capacity of 471.3 mg g −1 under white light and 618.49 mg g −1 under ultraviolet light. Leveraging strong sulfur coordination sites, the material showcased selectivity for Au(III) over coexisting ions (Co(II), Cr(III), Cu(II), K(I), Mn(II), Na(I), Ni(II), Zn(II)). These attributes, alongside outstanding regenerability and recyclability, underscore the promising potential of Fe 3 O 4 @POSS-MTG x in capturing and recovering Au(III), thus presenting a bright prospect for gold extraction from e-waste.

Strategies to maximize the reuse of electronic and industrial wastes have scientific, economic, social and environmental implications. We herein propose a strategy of “treating waste with waste” using LiCoO 2 cathode powders from spent lithium ion batteries to eliminate industrial pollutants led by sulfur (S) (IV) in waste water. By radical scavenging experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis, we identified singlet 1 O 2 as the dominant species while SO 4 − and OH as the secondary species for decontamination during the oxidization process mediated by LiCoO 2 powders. The intrinsic mechanism of S(IV) conversion was revealed to be two-step hydrogen migrations from HSO 3 − to O 2 occurring on LiCoO 2 surface by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The surface of LiCoO 2 powders plays a key role in anchoring sulfur species and forming surface complex as an excellent medium, which is found to be stable and reusable by material characterizations and the recycling experiment. Free Co(II) ions in solvents have no catalysis effect on the conversion of pollutants. Our work offers a particularly vivid example for rational reuse of electronic wastes to eliminate industrial pollutants, and may raise economic benefits in environmental practice due to two aims achieved in once action.

The demand for the recovery of precious metals has become increasingly prominent due to their scarcity and wide application, while the facile preparation of sustainable absorption and separation materials via molecular engineering still face great challenge by using renewable polymer resources. Herein, a water-soluble cellulose levulinate ester (CLE) with ketocarbonyl groups was utilized as 3D network scaffold to fabricate a cellulose-based aerogel adsorbent (CLE@PEI) by introducing polyethyleneimine (PEI) with multiple amine groups. The abundant functional groups and porous architecture allowed CLE@PEI to efficiently capture Au(III), Pt(IV) and Pd(II). The maximum adsorption capacity of CLE@50PEI reached a staggering 1752.0 mg/g for Au(III) at 298 K which was superior than that of Pt(IV) (1420.5 mg/g) and Pd(II) (495.1 mg/g). The adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm behavior, respectively. Additionally, the positively charged CLE@50PEI exhibited excellent selectivity for precious metals in multi-metal mixtures. The outstanding adsorption performance of the CLE@50PEI may be due to the new “adsorption-in situ reduction” mechanism, in which the process primarily involved the ion exchange coupled with electrostatic interaction and complexation, and the in situ reduction of absorbed Au(III) to single crystalline flakes. Moreover, quantitative desorption of the CLE@50PEI-loaded metals was achieved in acidic thiourea solution.

Concerns about the adverse consequences of informal electronic waste (e-waste) recycling is increasing, because e-waste contains some hazardous substances such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) which is used as flame retardants in electronics. There is dearth of information on the concentrations of PBDEs and the pattern of distribution at the various e-waste recycling sites in Nigeria. This study therefore measured the concentrations of 13 PBDE congeners, in top soils (0–10 cm) and in various dust samples from different e-waste recycling sites (burning, dismantling, repair). PBDE concentrations at e-waste sites were compared with the concentrations in samples from corresponding control sites in three study locations in Nigeria (Lagos, Ibadan, and Aba). There were significant differences in the level of PBDEs congeners between each of the e-waste recycling sites and the corresponding control sites. The levels of PBDEs at the e-waste recycling sites exceeded the levels at the controls sites by a factor of 100 s to 1000 s. In general, PBDE concentrations at the e-waste sites decreased with the intensity of the e-waste recycling activities: burning sites > dismantling sites > repair sites > control sites. Our results suggest that the informal e-waste recycling has negative impacts on the enviroment and human health. Keywords:electronic waste;informal recycling;PBDEs;soil;dust;Nigeria
