Enhancing the gas-sensing properties of metal oxide semiconductors using noble metals’ electronic and chemical sensitization functions is a common approach to develop high-performance gas sensors. However, the high cost and scarcity of noble metals pose challenges to sustainability. In this study, a non-noble metal MnFeCoNiCu high-entropy alloy (HEA) was designed as an alternative to noble metals to enhance the sensitivity of SnO2 and enable efficient, stable, and rapid detection of acetone (C3H6O). The MnFeCoNiCu HEA-loaded SnO2 demonstrated improved performance in C3H6O detection, including high selectivity (κ > 3), a high sensitivity (Ra/Rg = 4.17 at 0.5 ppm), a low detection limit (30 ppb), fast response and recovery time (4.6 s/5 s), long-term stability (over 50 days), and resistance to humidity (stable at 90% RH). The enhanced performance of the HEA is attributed to the fact that it possesses more valence electrons and the electrons can transfer and redistribute among different atoms, which leads to an increase in active oxygen species and catalytic sites, promoting electron sensitization. This study provides insights into designing and developing a highly catalytic, non-noble metal HEA for gas-sensing applications.

Given the potential hazards posed by triethylamine (TEA) to human health and environmental safety, it is crucial to have real-time and efficient detection methods in place. However, the low reactivity of TEA poses a challenge in achieving effective detection at low temperature. Hence, a high-performance sensor for detecting TEA was developed using Pd-doped WO 3 prepared through a one-step electrospinning method. The sensor based on 1.0 wt% Pd-WO 3 exhibited exceptional performance in detecting TEA at low temperature (100 °C), showing a response of 246 to 20 ppm. Additionally, it demonstrated a low detection limit (0.03 ppm) and excellent selectivity characteristics. The outstanding sensing capability can be ascribed to the noble metal electron sensitization and spillover effects, which enhance the interaction between chemisorbed oxygen and TEA gas by adjusting the Fermi level of 1.0 wt% Pd-WO 3 . This adjustment achieves surface electron redistribution and optimizes interfacial atomic transport, while also reducing the activation energy required for gas sensing, thereby lowering the operating temperature.

As one of the most promising “next generation” alcohol fuels, n-pentanol brings convenience to our lives as well as challenges. Realizing real-time monitoring of n-pentanol is important to the health of workers in chemical plants. In this work, a series of Au nanoparticles functionalized ZnO nanorods were prepared by a facile one-step solvothermal method. The electronic sensitization and chemical sensitization of Au nanoparticles regulate the thickness of initial depletion layer of ZnO nanorods and increase the amount of adsorbed oxygen species on the surface. The gas-sensing results showed that 2 mol% Au nanoparticles functionalized ZnO nanorods exhibited the highest response of 71.8 to 4 ppm n-pentanol at 260 °C, and showed much higher response than other various saturated monohydric alcohols with different carbon chain lengths. Moreover, the sensor possessed ultra-fast response speed (1 s), excellent stability, and a certain ability of moisture resistance. The sensor was heated at 350 °C to promote the desorption of n-pentanol. The surface depletion layer model and energy band theory were used to explain the enhanced gas-sensing performance. This work provides a suitable candidate for real-time monitoring of n-pentanol in chemical plants.

Metal sulfide-based gas sensors have the advantage of high sensitivity at room temperature, enabling high integration and low power consumption. However, a trade-off between low baseline resistance and good long-term stability at room temperature still needs to be addressed. Therefore, a single-atom Ce-targeted regulation strategy for p-SnS/n-SnS 2 was proposed. By doping different amounts of Ce, the amount and size of SnS quantum dots on the surface of SnS 2 can be regulated. Furthermore, Sn-S-Ce bonds are formed by combining single-atom Ce with SnS, which effectively hinders the growth and oxidation of SnS quantum dots, as evidenced by STEM, XPS, DFT, FTIR and EAXFS methods. Due to the unique energy band structure of p-SnS and n-SnS 2 , Ce-doped SnS quantum dots serve as electronic sensitizers, effectively increasing the carrier concentration in SnS 2 . The optimal gas sensor based on the 1% Ce-doped SnS/SnS 2 composites enables high sensitivity (with a response of 22.1 to 1 ppm NO 2 ), ultralow detection limit (1 ppb), excellent long-term stability at room temperature, and a lower baseline resistance. This engineering strategy of metal sulfide semiconductor heterostructures through single-atom targeted regulation provides new insights for further optimizing the composite system.

CeO 2 was often incorporated into metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) based gas sensors to improve their humidity resistance for real-world gas detection applications. However, the traditional intrinsic anti-humidity mechanism of crystalline CeO 2 materials often faces challenge to high-humidity environment. In this work, CeO 2 decoration layers with varying degrees of crystallinity were designed to explore their impact on the humidity resistance of Tb-SnO 2 @CeO 2 core-shell composite nanofibers for hydrogen (H 2 ) sensing. Gas sensing tests revealed that the sensor based on Tb-SnO 2 NFs decorated with crystalline CeO 2 particles (Tb-SnO 2 @CeO 2 -P) exhibited a 2.43-fold improvement in response compared to the undecorated Tb-SnO 2 sensor when detecting 10-ppm H 2 at 280℃ & 40 % RH. Moreover, the Tb-SnO 2 @CeO 2 -P NF sensor retained ∼83 % of its sensing performance as ambient humidity increased from 25 % to 85 % RH. The sensor also demonstrated ultra-short response/recovery times (< 1 s), a low limit of detection (20 ppb), and an excellent linearity in response over a wide H 2 concentration range. Additionally, series of analysis indicated that the crystallinity degree of CeO 2 coating significantly affects the formation of a hydroxyl crystal-like layer on its surface, further governing the anti-humidity property of the sensors. Furthermore, the mechanisms discussion indicated that the electron sensitization effect from CeO₂ component greatly reduce the interface resistance, thereby greatly improved the gas sensing performances of Tb-SnO₂@CeO₂-P sensors.
