Screen-printed ultra-thin and multifunctional e-tattoos towards epidermal sensors

Yue Zhang,Ziting Deng,Peng Hong,Zhenchen Bao,Xiangyu Yin,Pengli Zhu

Conformal e-tattoos have recently received widespread attention because of their great potential for precise and immediate monitoring of physiological signals. However, expensive materials or complex fabrication processes are often required to obtain e-tattoos that meet the above application requirements. Here, we propose a facile strategy for the preparation of e-tattoos via screen printing while achieving versatile parameters collection capabilities. The screen printing inks can be obtained only by mixing and stirring carboxylated MWCNTs water slurry, elastomer transparent glue, glycerin and commercial ink according to the needs of target signal detection. Furthermore, a layer of ultra-thin medical pressure-sensitive adhesive layer was subtly involved in the temperature and humidity sensitive e-tattoos, successfully avoiding the mutual interference between the physical signals and the electrophysiological signals. The continuous monitoring of sEMG signals, ECG signals, local humidity conditions, and skin temperature changes can be achieved by applying the multifunctional e-tattoo platform onto the human skin surface. This technology shows promise as a potential avenue for the advancement of electronic tattoo sensing in the future.

Ionic Network Based on Dynamic Ionic Liquids for Electronic Tattoo Application

Zhiwu Chen,Naiwei Gao,Yanji Chu,Yonglin He,Yapei Wang

Electronic tattoos as an emerging epidermal electronic are alluring in the field of wearable electronics for their lightweight and noninvasive properties. However, the combination of flexibility, skin biocompatibility, adhesion, repairability, and erasability remains a challenge for fabricating electronic tattoos. Hence, a dynamic ionic liquid is prepared which is ideally suited for making an electronic tattoo with these challenging features at the same time. Such an intrinsically flexible electronic tattoo can be firmly attached to human skin with negligible irritation. More importantly, the existence of dynamic covalent chemistry provides the electronic tattoo with healing and erasable abilities under mild redox conditions. Owing to the high ionic conductivity of ionic liquids, the electronic tattoo exhibits excellent sensing performance in response to the temperature variation and tensile strain, which can intelligently monitor body temperature, pulse, and movement. As an extension of the application, a specially designed quadrilateral electronic tattoo can sense and distinguish multiple signals simultaneously. This concept of electronic tattoo based on the dynamic ionic liquid shows great potentials in the applications of intelligent wearable electronics.

Breathable, Adhesive, and Biomimetic Skin-Like Super Tattoo

Chuqi Li,Zhiyuan Tan,Xiaohu Shi,Dekui Song,Yan Zhao,Yan Zhang,Zihan Zhao,Weifeng Zhang,Jiongyang Qi,Yifang Wang,Xin Wang,Zhenquan Tan,Nan Liu

Electronic tattoo, capable of imperceivably acquiring bio-electrical signals from the body, is broadly applied in healthcare and human-machine interface. Tattoo substrate, the foundation of electronic tattoo, is expected to be mechanically mimetic to skin, adhesive, and breathable, and yet remains highly challenging to achieve. Herein, the study mimics human skin and design a breathable, adhesive, and mechanically skin-like super tattoo substrate based on an ultra-thin film (≈2 µm). Similar to skin, super tattoo demonstrates strain-adaptive stiffening properties with high tear energy (5.4 kJ·m −2 ) and toughness (1.3 MJ·m −3 ). Superior to skin, it exhibits high adhesion, ionic conductivity, and permeability. A variety of conductive electrodes can be processed on it, showing the universality toward an ideal platform for electronic tattoo with stable and low contact impedance. Super tattoo-based electrodes can imperceivably and accurately monitor weak electromyography (EMG) of swallowing on the junction, providing effective guidance for rehabilitation training of dysphagia.

Multilayered electronic transfer tattoo that can enable the crease amplification effect

Lixue Tang,Jin Shang,Xingyu Jiang

Electronic tattoos have great potential in health and movement sensing applications on the skin. However, existing electronic tattoos cannot be conformal, sticky, and multilayered at the same time. Here, we have achieved multilayered integration of the electronic tattoo that is highly stretchable (800%), conformal, and sticky. This electronic tattoo can enable the crease amplification effect, which can amplify the output signal of integrated strain sensors by three times. The tattoo can be transferred to different surfaces and form a firm attachment, where no solvent or heat is needed. The tattoo fabrication is straightforward and scalable; a layer-by-layer strategy and two materials (metal-polymer conductors and the elastomeric block copolymer) are used to fabricate the circuit module with desirable numbers of layers within the tattoo. A three-layered tattoo integrating 1 heater and 15 strain sensors is developed for temperature adjustment, movement monitoring, and remote control of robots.

Spray-Coated Fully Water-Soluble Composites for Waterproof Breathable E-Tattoos

Yue Zhu,Liya Dai,Mingshuang Hu,Fei Wang,Haoran Guo,XiaoYun Zhao,Hui Yang

Electronic tattoos (e-tattoos), which can be conformally attached to the human skin for real-time, continuous, and noninvasive sensing of physiological signals, hold great promise for personalized healthcare applications. However, e-tattoos based on these water-soluble materials are easily degraded by sweat in the course of daily exercise, leading to the inaccuracy of human signal sensing for long-term monitoring. Herein, enhanced waterproof breathable e-tattoos via spray deposition of a water-soluble composite ink containing poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)(PEDOT:PSS), single-walled carbon nanotubes, waterborne polyurethane, and maltitol (as a plasticizer) is developed. The sprayed e-tattoos exhibit a distinctive 3D network structure. This unique architecture endows them with exceptional waterproof properties, excellent conformal adhesion, breathability, and biocompatibility, thereby ensuring their long-term wearability. As epidermal electronic devices, the highly conformal e-tattoos serve as ion-selective interdigital electrodes and seamlessly integrated with a flexible printed circuit board. Such integration enabled wireless, continuous, and real-time monitoring of potassium ion (K + ) concentrations in human sweat during daily activities. Therefore, the waterproof and breathable e-tattoos with excellent comprehensive performance could provide a promising platform for next-generation wearable epidermal electronics.
