Tourmaline triggered biofilm transformation: Boosting ultrafiltration efficiency and fouling resistance

Dan Song,Lu Wang,Weikai Sun,Yingjie Zhang,Binghan Xie,Ying Zhao,Wei Wang,Peizhi Wang,Jun Ma,Wei Cheng

Ultralow pressure filtration system, which integrates the dual functionalities of biofilm degradation and membrane filtration, has gained significant attention in water treatment due to its superior contaminant removal efficiency. However, it is a challenge to mitigate membrane biofouling while maintaining the high activity of biofilm. This study presents a novel ceramic-based ultrafiltration membrane functionalized with tourmaline nanoparticles to address this challenge. The incorporation of tourmaline nanoparticles enables the release of nutrient elements and the generation of an electric field, which enhances the biofilm activity on the membrane surface and simultaneously alleviates intrapore biofouling. The tourmaline-modified ceramic membrane (TCM) demonstrated a significant antifouling effect, with a substantial increase in water flux by 60 %. Additionally, the TCM achieved high removal efficiencies for contaminants (48.78 % in TOC, 22.28 % in UV 254 , and 24.42 % in TN) after 30 days of continuous operation. The fouling resistance by various constituents in natural water was individually analyzed using model compounds. The TCM with improved electronegativity and hydrophilicity exhibited superior resistance to irreversible fouling through increased electrostatic repulsion and reduced adhesion to foulants. Comprehensive characterizations and analyses, including interfacial interaction energies, redox reaction processes, and biofilm evolutions, demonstrated that the TCM can release nutrient elements to facilitate the development of functional microbial community within the biofilm, and generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) on the membrane surface to the degrade contaminants and mitigate membrane biofouling. The electric field generated by tourmaline nanoparticles can promote electron transfer in the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle, ensuring a stable and sustainable generation of ROS and bactericidal negative ions. These synergistic functions enhance contaminant removal and reduce irreversible fouling of the TCM. This study provides fundamental insights into the role of tourmaline-modified surfaces in enhancing membrane filtration performance and fouling resistance, inspiring the development of high-performance, anti-fouling membranes.

Facile construction of tourmaline/carbon-supported Cu-Ni/ZrO2 for efficient catalytic hydrogenation of levulinic acid via activating aqueous-phase system

Ying Zhu,Furui Hu,Zi Yu,Yongxin Liang,Tao Gan,Huayu Hu,Zuqiang Huang,Yanjuan Zhang

The activation of reaction system for high-efficiency hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) into γ-valerolactone (GVL) is significant for sustainable development of biomass. Herein, based on a strategy of tourmaline (TM)-activated aqueous-phase system, a Cu-Ni/ZrO 2 @TM/C catalyst was facilely constructed by a totally solid-phase method. Cu-Ni/ZrO 2 @TM/C exhibited outstanding catalytic performance, benefiting from the spontaneous polarization and far-infrared radiation characteristics of tourmaline and the strong metal–metal and metal–support interactions. Under the optimum reaction conditions of 180 °C, 150 min, and 1.5 MPa H 2 , 100.0 % of LA conversion and 93.0 % of GVL yield were achieved. A variety of tests and theoretical calculations confirm that tourmaline with spontaneously polarized electric field and far-infrared radiation can break intermolecular hydrogen bonds to form small water clusters for activating aqueous-phase environment, facilitating the transport of active species as well as greatly reducing the hydrogenation barrier. The activating water effect of tourmaline, the acid sites and oxygen vacancies of ZrO 2 , and the alloying structure of Cu-Ni bimetal can synergistically benefit the transport of active species for reinforcing water-assisted proton hopping. Moreover, a reasonable tourmaline-activated aqueous-phase system was proposed to explain the enhanced aqueous hydrogenation of LA. This study innovatively illuminates the construction of functional non-precious metal catalysts for efficient aqueous-phase hydrogenation of biomass-derived chemicals.

A novel sustainable wood-based negative air anion generator utilizing in-situ polymerization of polylactic acid to reinforce the cellulose framework

Minghui Yang,Ce Sun,Liang Chang,Song Liu,Dingyuan Zheng,Yang Chen,Xiaoxiao Sun,Haiyan Tan,Yanhua Zhang

The generation of negative air ions (NAI) by furniture contributes to indoor air purification and enhances the living environment. However, commercially available furniture typically relies on surface coatings to release NAI. Over time, the degradation of these coatings leads to a significant decline in NAI release performance, presenting a persistent challenge for sustained effectiveness. Here, a novel sustainable wood-based negative air anion generator (SWNG) had been developed, utilizing a cellulose framework as the substrate. The in-situ synthesis of polylactic acid (PLA) within the wood incorporated titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ), tourmaline (TL), and cellulose acetate, firmly anchoring these materials within the wood structure. Compared to the cellulose framework alone, the NAI production of the SWNG had increased by 406.67 %. The impregnation with PLA enhanced the enduring photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 and TL in this innovative wooden NAI generator. After undergoing 200 cycles of testing between −40 °C and 50 °C, it continued to sustain NAI production, demonstrating exceptional antibacterial performance. Overall, this study introduced a novel sustainable wood-based negative air ion generator as a highly stable material with sustainable properties, offering significant potential for applications in improving indoor air quality and in the domain of home construction.

Strong promoted catalytic ozonation of atrazine at low temperature using tourmaline as catalyst: Influencing factors, reaction mechanisms and pathways

Da Wang,Haodan Xu,Jun Ma,Xiaohui Lu,Jingyao Qi,Shuang Song

Tourmaline, an economical and eco-friendly natural mineral, has been widely used during the water treatment processes. In this investigation, the raw tourmaline has been found to be effective as a catalyst for ozonation in the degradation of atrazine (ATZ) under low temperature (278 K). Within typical experimental conditions (tourmaline dosage = 1 g L −1 , [ATZ] 0  = 5 μM, [O 3 ] 0  = 3 mg L −1 , at pH 7.0 and 278 K), the removal efficiency of ATZ in catalytic ozonation was 98% after 10 min, compared with only 27% ATZ removal in the absence of catalyst. Surface properties and components of tourmaline were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), pyridine-FTIR and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The characterization studies showed that metal attached hydroxyl groups (M OH, M = Fe, Al and Si) were the main active sites for ozone adsorption and decomposition. The formation of hydroxyl radicals ( OH) as well as hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) led to fast ATZ degradation and 31 kinds of intermediates; meanwhile, possible degradation pathways of ATZ were detected and proposed. The mechanisms of reaction were proposed for tourmaline-catalyzed ozonation based on all the experimental results and material characterizations.

Tourmaline as versatile additive to improve the performance of thin-film composite forward osmosis membrane

Zhang Feng,Wang Yaqin,Miao Wenfei,Liu Zhaoming,Oh Won-Chun

Modified tourmaline (TM) minerals were prepared using hydrothermal method, followed by surface coating with sorbitan monostearate (SPAN-60), as well as characterization of FTIR, XRD, zeta potential, and antibacterial property analysis. The as-synthesized TM particles were incorporated with polyethersulfone (PES) substrate of thin-film composite forward osmosis (TFC-FO) membrane for alleviated structural resistance and biofouling tendency based on two different approaches, polymer blending into and polymer coating onto the inorganic deposited layer, respectively. To investigate the micromorphology of the prepared membranes, SEM was used to obtain the surface and cross-section images, and elemental mapping with EDS was applied to analyze the dispersion state of TM particles in PES matrix. In comparison to the control membrane, the water flux in FO mode of the nanocomposite membranes significantly increased with TM loading content, which is attributed to the optimization of microstructure and enhancement of inner osmotic pressure resulted from the ions released by TM. More importantly, the results showed TM endowed antibacterial activity in the membrane when TM deposited layer combined with the bottom surface of substrate. It is confirmed by our work that TM is a versatile additive for FO membrane with high performance.

Multiple interface coupling on natural tourmaline enables high-efficiency removal of antibiotic: Superior property and mechanism

Jingjing Cui,Xiangyu Liu,Feifan Qie,Chengzhe Xie,Qingdong He,Jian Liu,Steven L. Suib,Wenbo Wang

Reasonably designing highly active, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective catalysts for efficient elimination of pollutants from water is desirable but challenging. Herein, an efficient heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst tourmaline (TM)/tungsten oxide (WO 3-x ) (named TW10) containing tungsten/boron/iron (W/B/Fe) synergistic active centers and 90% of cheap natural tourmaline (TM) mineral rich in Fe and B elements. The TW10 catalyst can quickly activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to generate massive active free radicals, which may induce the rapid and efficient degradation of tetracycline (TC). The TW10/PMS/Visible light system can effectively degrade up to 98.7% of tetracycline (TC) in actual waters (i.e. seawater, Yellow River, and Yangtze River water), and the catalytic degradation rates reach 1.65, 5.569, and 2.38 times higher than those of TM, WO 3-x , and commercial P25 (Degussa, Germany), respectively. In addition, the catalyst can be recycled and reused multiple times. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy (EPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer (LC-MS) analyses confirm that the synergistic catalytic effect of W/B/Fe sites on the TW10 catalyst accelerates the electron transfer between Fe(II) and Fe(III), as well as between W(V) and W(VI), and thus promotes the rapid degradation of TC. The catalytic reaction mechanism and degradation pathway of TC were explored. This work provides a feasible route for the design and development of new eco-friendly and efficient catalyst.

Tourmaline synergized with persulfate for degradation of sulfadiazine: Influencing parameters and reaction mechanism

Bihui Niu,Ningfen Wang,Yuming Chen,Min Yu,Ziliang Hou,Zhongguo Li,Yian Zheng

Tourmaline (TM), a natural silicate mineral with spontaneous electric field was selected as an iron-source catalyst to activate ammonium persulfate (APS) for synergistic degradation of sulfadiazine (SDZ) at normal temperature. Firstly, TM was well characterized by combination of X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF), Mössbauer spectroscopy , N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherm, and scanning/transmission electron microscope (SEM/TEM). Then, TM-assisted APS system was utilized for SDZ degradation, and different parameters influencing the degradation efficiency were investigated. The optimized degradation efficiency of SDZ was 70.80% at pH = 3.0 in TM-APS system. After being reused for four times, TM-assisted APS system could still reach > 80% of the first degradation efficiency. The free radical scavenging and electron paramagnetic resonance experiments demonstrated that TM could assist APS to produce hydroxyl radicals and sulfate radicals for SDZ degradation. By combination of LC/MS spectra and Mössbauer spectroscopy, the degradation products, as well as the degradation mechanism, were proposed in heterogeneous TM-APS system. Finally, the acute toxicity of SDZ and the degradation products in TM-APS system was tentatively evaluated based on the luminescence inhibition of marine bacteria Vibrio fischeri . From this study, TM-assisted APS system shows higher degradation efficiency for SDZ at room temperature, and spontaneous cyclic conversion of Fe(II) and Fe(III) on TM surface ensures its good reusability, and accordingly, TM-APS system has good application potential for degradable removal of SDZ in water.

Electric Field Driven of Tourmaline/g-C3N4 Photocatalyst with Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance and High-Efficient Pollutant Degradation

Xiaohan Sun,Jinliang Zhu,Qianqian Yu,Jiazuo Zhou,Fangmiao Wang,Zishuai Jiang,Yifan Liu,Yuan Yu,Yingxin Li,Haiyue Yang,Yudong Li,Chengyu Wang

Photocatalysis technology of g-C 3 N 4 is of great value in wastewater treatment, thus calling for developing a concise and high-efficiency method to improve its photocatalytic efficiency. Here, a novel photocatalyst consisting of tourmaline particles (TPs) and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) is prepared by a step calcining method with enhanced photocatalytic performance. The self-polarized electric field of TPs attracts the photogenerated electrons generated by the catalyst and delays the recombination rate of electron-hole pairs, for which reason the prepared photocatalyst exhibits a wider spectral response and stronger photocatalytic activity. The mechanism analysis exhibits that the reactive substances including h + , ·OH, 1 O 2 , and ·O 2 − generated by TPs/g-C 3 N 4 effectively eliminate the contaminant during photocatalysis. The degradation efficiency of Rhodamine B (RhB) of g-C 3 N 4 -0.5% TPs is increased from 88.47% to 97.76% after 30 min illumination compared with pure g-C 3 N 4 . Furthermore, to facilitate catalyst recycling and reuse, a photocatalytic lignocellulose membrane is prepared. After five cycles, the degradation efficiency of the membrane decreases from 97.89% to 95.54%, still maintaining 97.60%. This study has constructed an innovative tourmaline/g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst and recyclable photocatalytic lignocellulose membrane with enhanced pollutant degradation properties by introducing naturally polarized minerals, providing a new approach for efficient water treatment.

Facile design of surface electric field driven tourmaline/g-C3N4 layered stacked photocatalysts with enhanced photocatalytic activity for antibiotic removal

Xiangwei Tang,Rongdi Tang,Zhanpeng Zhou,Ling Li,Yaocheng Deng,Daoxin Gong,Lihua Yang,Tianwei Song,Mingxuan He

In the field of photocatalysis , Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) has received a lot of attention for its superior functionality and benefits. However, it suffers from the fatal defect of low charge separation efficiency, which is well addressed by tourmaline's self-contained surface electric field. In this work, tourmaline/g-C 3 N 4 (T/CN) composites were successfully synthesized. Due to its surface electric field effect, tourmaline and g-C 3 N 4 are stacked on top of each other. It makes its specific surface area increase greatly and more active sites are exposed. Additionally, the rapid separation of photogenerated electron holes under the action of electric field promotes the photocatalytic reaction. T/CN exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance under visible light, with 99.9% Tetracycline (TC 50 mg L −1 ) removal after 30 min. Compared to tourmaline (0.0160 min −1 ) and g-C 3 N 4 (0.0230 min −1 ), the T/CN composite's reaction rate constant (0.1754 min −1 ) was 11.0 and 7.6 times higher. A series of characterizations also determined the structural properties and catalytic performance of the T/CN composites, which were found to have a larger specific surface area, narrower band gap, and higher charge separation efficiency compared to the monomer . In addition, the toxicity of tetracycline intermediates and their degradative pathways were investigated, and the toxicity of the intermediates was found to be reduced. Given the quenching experiments and active substance determination, it was also found that h + and ·O 2 − play a major role. This work provides more inspiration for photocatalytic material performance research as well as green innovation for environmental management.

Robust Effects of Graphene Oxide on Polyurethane/Tourmaline Nanocomposite Fiber

Yuanchi Zhang,Jinlian Hu

The use of energy therapy including tourmaline/negative ions has gained huge popularity due to their long-standing historical evidence in improving human health and the technology development. However, the limitations of tourmaline based polyurethane fibers including the unsatisfied mechanical properties and negative ions releasing performances hind their further applications for wearable energy therapy. In this study, graphene oxide was modified within the polyurethane/tourmaline nanocomposite and then the wet-spinning method was used to prepare the fibers. As expected, the results proved that polyurethane/tourmaline/graphene oxide fiber had enhanced Young’s modulus (8.4 MPa) and tensile stain at break (335%). In addition, the number of released negative ions from polyurethane/tourmaline/graphene oxide fiber was significantly improved 17 times and 1.6 times more than that of neat polyurethane fiber and polyurethane/tourmaline fiber, respectively. Moreover, the releasing number of negative ions was significantly decreased after being applying voltage. We envision that the proposed polyurethane/tourmaline/graphene oxide fiber will provide valuable insights into the development of the wearable energy products. Keywords:graphene oxide;tourmaline;polyurethane fiber;negative ions;robust effects

Iron (II) phthalocyanine loaded tourmaline efficiently activates PMS to degrade pharmaceutical contaminants under solar light

Zhendong Wang,Zhexin Zhu,Gangqiang Wang,Xiaoji Ma,Wangyang Lu

Iron (II) phthalocyanine (FePc) is loaded on the surface of the tourmaline (TM) by the reflow method to obtain FePc/TM. This research effectively prevents the π-π stacking of FePc, increased the effective utilization rate of PMS activation under solar light, and further improved the catalytic performance of the catalytic system. The catalytic oxidation efficiency of FePc/TM on carbamazepine (CBZ) and sulfadiazine (SD) can reach 99% under solar light for 15 and 5 min, the total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate can reach 58% and 69% under solar light for 120 min. After 6 cycles, the CBZ removal rate remained above 95%. In addition, the FePc/TM catalytic system has an excellent removal rate for other pharmaceuticals. The results of spin-trapped electron paramagnetic resonance and classical quenching experiments show that FePc/TM can effectively activate PMS to generate active species under solar light, including superoxide radical (•O2−), singlet oxygen (1O2), hydroxyl radicals(•OH), and sulphate radicals (SO4•−). The intermediates of CBZ were identified by Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography and high resolution mass spectrometry, and the degradation pathway was proposed. As the reaction progresses, all CBZ and intermediates are reduced and converted into small acids, or mineralized to H2O, CO2. This work provides an alternative method for the design of efficient activation of PMS activation catalysts under solar light to eliminate residual pharmaceuticals in actual water bodies.

Degradation of tetracycline in a schorl/H2O2 system: Proposed mechanism and intermediates

Yihan Zhang,Jing Shi,Zhengwen Xu,Yue Chen,Duanmei Song

Schorl could perform as an extremely promising catalyst for decomposing tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) due to its high degradation efficiency, low cost, chemical stability, easy recovery and repeatable utilization. Comparisons of TC degradation indifferent systems showed that schorl/H 2 O 2 system exhibited the optimum pollutant elimination and TOC removal efficiencies. Kinetics and possible mechanisms of TC degradation were clarified. The OH generated on the schorl surface and O 2 − /HO 2 were the main reactive species responsible for TC oxidation. Six possible intermediates were identified, and possible transform mechanisms and pathways were explored. Active radicals were inclined to attack the C C double bond, dimethylamino and phenolic moieties of TC molecular. The principal intermediate products were generated through N-demethylation, oxidation and rearrangement.
