Fast and safe electric heating is highly needed in extreme climates or thermal therapy. Herein, porous activated carbon derived from silk waste is prepared by a simple method. Various porous activated carbons are obtained using different types and concentrations of activator (KOH, KCl, and KHCO3). The effect of the microstructure on the electric heating performance of these carbons is investigated carefully. The type, activator concentration, and carbonization temperature play key roles in the regulation of electric heating properties. The porous carbon activated by 0.05 M KHCO3 at 800 °C demonstrates larger specific surface area (3077 m2 g–1), higher graphitization degree, and lower resistance (2.4 Ω cm), which synergistically contribute greatly to its higher electrothermal efficiency and better electric heating performance. The equilibrium temperature could reach 73 °C in 2 min under a safe voltage of 12 V, proving the better pore-forming capacity and activating function of KHCO3. An electric heating cotton@carbon composite fabric with quite good electric heating property and stability is also prepared, which could reach 38 °C in 2 min under 12 V safe voltage and maintain a temperature 10 °C higher than the ambient temperature even when bent at an angle of 55°. This activated carbon derived from waste protein using a simple and cheap process has great potential in practical applications.

High-performance wearable electronics are highly desirable for the development of body warming and human health monitoring devices. In the present study, high electrically conductive and photothermal cotton yarns (CYs) with long-term stability were prepared as wearable electronics. The process contains back-to-back decoration of the fiber surface by Ti 3 C 2 T x (MXene) nanosheets, and the poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT: PSS) composite, to form a core–shell structure (MP@CY). The addition of a small amount of PEDOT: PSS plays a dual role of protecting the MXene from oxidation and increasing the electrical conductivity. The resulting yarn exhibits excellent electrical conductivity (21.8 Ω cm −1 ), rapid electrothermal response, and superb photothermal conversion capability, supporting its application as an optical/electrical dual-drive heater. A three-dimensional (3D) honeycomb-like textile wearable heater based on MP@CY as weft yarn demonstrates outstanding electrical thermal properties (0–2.5 V, 30–196.8 °C) and exceptional photothermal conversion (130 mW cm −2 , 64.2 °C). Using an Internet of Things (IoT) microcontroller and Espressif (ESP) electronics chip, which are combined with wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) and smartphone, real-time visualization and precise control of the temperature interface can be achieved. Furthermore, MP@CY-based knitted sensors, obtained by hand-knitting, are utilized for monitoring human movement and health, exhibiting high sensitivity and long-term cycling stability. The rapid movement of electrons during electrical heating produces electromagnetic shielding phenomena (along with an increase in the dielectric constant), which severely hampers the transmission of electromagnetic waves. We propose a patterned structure based on an electrically heated film that enables efficient surface heating and high wave-transmittance. In this paper, the structure exhibits a transmittance greater than 50 % in the 2–18 GHz band and excellent transmittance exceeding 80 % in the 2–8.88 GHz band under vertically incident TM-polarized electromagnetic waves (parallel polarized or vertically polarized wave). The de-icing experiments demonstrated the excellent heating efficiency and fast electrothermal response time of the structure. At a loading power of 4629.6 W/m2, the surface temperature of the structure reached 50.6 °C after 110 s, resulting in the shedding of surface ice. This work proposes a coupling strategy between wave transparency and electro-thermal performance, which is important for promoting the development of integrated structures with stealth/de-icing capabilities.

Current advancements in anti-icing coatings emphasize the integration of photothermal, electrothermal, and superhydrophobic features to significantly enhance de-icing efficiency. However, these multifaceted coatings often involve intricate preparation methods and costly materials, making them susceptible to damage and reduced durability. This research aims to overcome these challenges by combining active and passive anti-icing principles to achieve full-time efficient anti-icing. A novel strategy is devised to modify the wettability of epoxy resins by grafting a fluorinated oligomer using a curing agent bridging technique. By utilizing micron-sized Titanium Nitride (TiN) and nanosized Acetylene Black fillers within a fluorine-modified epoxy resin, applied through a simple spray technique, the resulting coating exhibits excellent photothermal, electrothermal, and superhydrophobic properties. Evaluations confirm the coating’s robust mechanical durability for extended operational use and its stabilized effectiveness in photothermal and electrothermal de-icing. Notably, this approach maintains electrical conductivity by eliminating the filler hydrophobic modification, also enhancing the mechanical performance of nanocarbon-based multifunctional anti-icing coatings. Moreover, it simplifies the manufacturing process, reduces cost of coating materials, and enables broad application across various substrate surfaces.

Electric heating composites play an important role in the rapid temperature response and electric-thermal conversion of instant electric heating tubes. However, the preparation of an electric heating composite with superior electrothermal performance and high-power density for high-temperature applications above 300 °C remains a challenge. Herein, a high-temperature electric heating composite was prepared with continuous fluffy three-dimensional interconnected graphene-expanded graphite hybrid conductive fillers (GGCF). A maximum temperature of 310 °C and a high heating rate of 450 °C·min–1 can be obtained in the PI electric heating film along with a high electrothermal radiation conversion efficiency of 44% and electrothermal conversion efficiency of 0.27 W·°C–1. The corresponding steady-state temperature is 5.1 and 12.7 times higher than those with equivalent alone rGO and alone GP, respectively. Furthermore, the final Al electric heating tube can heat the flowing water to 100 °C within 6 s at a typical water flow rate of 380 mL·min–1 and 2000 W. The 2 h continuous heating demonstrates long-term stability with a power fluctuation below 3%. 770 cycles of heating and cooling verify the excellent heat shock resistance and repeatability. The superior electrothermal performance, instant heating function, long-term stability, and high safety of this electric heating composite show great potential in electric heating fields.

Abstract In this study, cotton fabrics were reported to be typically functionalized by loading silver nanowires (AgNW) on the surface of the polydopamine modified cotton fabric. Firstly, AgNW were prepared by a polyol method and then a polydopamine-modified cotton fabric was prepared by being immersed in AgNW dispersion by the dip-coating method. The resulting silver nanowire/polydopamine/cotton-based nanocomposites (APCN) has a surface specific resistance as low as 2.4 Ω and has good durability and flexibility. In addition, the electrothermal properties of APCN were investigated by applied voltage. The result showed that the composite material can reach 80 °C in a short time under the voltage of 1.8 V, and conform to the power balance model. The steady-state temperature of the composite material is closely related to the voltage, and has a quadratic relationship with the voltage and expresses linear relation with the electric power. Natural cellulose fibers have a unique hierarchical structure, starting from nanofibers, to microfiber bundles, and consequent to large scale fibers. This work wants to utilize this characteristic to tailor the surface morphology of plant-based fabrics in situ, avoiding complex separate washing process, and explore their functional applications. Specifically, ramie fabric was moderately oxidated using the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)/NaClO 2 /NaClO system. The scanning electron microscopy results show that a large number of cellulose micro-nanofibers can protrude from the fiber surface on the TEMPO-mediated oxidized ramie fabric (TORF) by controlling the reagent additions, which enlarges the specific surface area of the fabric. Subsequently, the crystal structure, chemical structure, carboxylate content and mechanical properties of the fabrics with different degrees of oxidation were determined in detail. In addition, the TORF was successfully modified by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) through simple physical adsorption. The electrical conductivity of the CNT-modified TORF increases with the oxidation degree of the fabric. Moreover, it shows application potential in fields such as electric heating. Based on the natural hierarchical structure, this work provides new ideas for the surface structure tailoring of natural plant fabrics and fibers, and also provides a platform for fabric functionalization. Flexible electrothermal composite phase change materials (PCMs) are promising candidates for portable thermotherapy. However, a great challenge remains to achieve high PCM loading while maintaining reasonable flexibility. Herein, the polypyrrole-decorated melamine foam (PPy@MF) was fabricated and thereafter applied to confine binary PCM mixtures composed of a high-enthalpy long-chain polyethylene glycol (PEG4000) and its short-chain homologue (PEG200) to make the novel PPy@MF-PEG4000+200 composite PCM. At a high loading of up to 74.1% PEG4000 and a high latent heat energy storage density of 150.1 J/g, the composite PCM remained flexible at temperature (−20 °C) far below its phase transition point thanks to the plasticine effect of PEG200. The composite also demonstrated good Joule heating performance, providing fast heating from 28 to 70 °C at low applied voltages (4.5–6.0 V). The energy could be stored efficiently and released to maintain the composites at the proper temperature. The electrothermal performance of the composite remained undisturbed during curved or repeated bending, showing good potential to be used for personal thermal management and thermotherapy.

A high-performance electro-thermal heater needs not only excellent thermal conductivity but high electric conductivity with the aim of a lower operating voltage to generate heat continuously and effectively. The graphene-poly(vinyl alcohol) composite film with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) network structure had been fabricated which has outstanding electrical conductivity and electric heating ability. The influence of CNTs on the electrical conductivity and electro-thermal ability of the composite film materials was investigated by adjusting the ratio of CNTs to Gr. The results show that the Gr sheets and CNTs were successfully connected by chemical bonding using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane. The sheet resistivity of Gr/CNTs composite film decreases significantly with the improvement of CNTs content. Besides, the sheet resistivity of Gr/CNTs composite film decreases gradually with the bending times increase. The voltage of 7.0 V can generate a temperature of 143.7 °C, which is not only a human-safe voltage, but also within the support range of most portable power sources. Accordingly, the thin Gr/CNTs composite film supplies a new and simple method preparation of the flexible electro-thermal heater.

Smart fibers as interfaces for sensing environmental information are expected to accelerate sustainable development in the wearable era. However, challenges remain in terms of fiber versatility, low power consumption and the ability to discriminate between different mechanics. Herein, we propose a novel three-layer core–shell manufacturing strategy: the combination of coaxial spinning and spraying technology, using pure elastomers (polyurethane) as a base layer to increase the tensile range; mixing a liquid metal (LM) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) doped into a polyurethane (PU) matrix as a durable electrode layer to reduce the power used and enhance the electron transfer pathway; spraying pleated MXene coatings to enrich the gas sensing sites. Finally, the strain sensor has an impressive gauge factor (GF) of 1.1367 ± 0.08643 (in the sensing range of 0–200%, R2 = 0.99425), a low strain detection limit of 1% and a fast response time of 0.12 s. Meanwhile, the single fibers, which are warp and weft braided, can also accurately sense changes in spatial pressure. In addition, these fibers exhibit superior electrothermal performance, with the capability to heat from room temperature to 65.7 °C at a 10 V voltage just in 50 s. Furthermore, with the strong hydrogen bonds formed between the MXene outer coating and organic gas molecules, it is highly selective for acetone, and with the excellent electrical conductivity of liquid metals, it can also be used as an electrical heating device. These results provide effective tools for building multifunctional sensing platforms for strain, pressure, temperature, and gases, which can be applied in fields such as wearable health and environmental monitoring.

Electric heating textiles not only can be used as commercial electric heating products but also have great potential in the application of medical fields. In this work, a Ti3C2Tx (MXene) and gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-decorated carbon nanotube yarn (CNTY) for one-dimensional (1D) textile heaters was fabricated through an in situ self-reduction reaction of MXene in HAuCl4 aqueous solution to improve the electrical properties of the carbon nanotube yarns. Based on the excellent conductivity of the MXene/AuNP-decorated CNTYs, this 1D textile heater exhibits excellent electro-thermal properties with good wash stability and acid and alkali resistance. At a voltage of 3 V, the saturation temperature can quickly reach ∼154 °C. After integration with conventional fabrics, the devices exhibit excellent thermal response and cycling stability, reaching ∼92 °C at a safe voltage (6 V) and remaining stable for over 1000 s.

Emerging underwater exploration suggests the need for subaqueous E-textiles. Large-deformation signal feedback for swimming motions and body thermal protection against hypothermia are urgently desirable. Here, underwater-usable E-textiles with remarkable sensing and electrothermal behaviors are introduced, which are composed of stretchable core-sheath fibers based on liquid metal fabricated via a coaxial wet-spinning strategy. The fibers possess outstanding specific resistance (∼0.05 Ω·cm −1 ) and robust sensing detection range for both strain (∼600% elongation) and pressure (∼30 MPa), as well as a quick response time (30 ms). Meanwhile, the fabricated E-textiles present excellent low-power-driving electrothermal performance (1.5 W, ∼50 °C) even at underwater conditions. Remarkably, the conducting liquid metal circuit can be well reversed even after being entirely broken out of the sensing ranges. For proof of concept, an underwater glove integrating motion sensing, visual danger warning and hypothermia prevention is exhibited, which has potential for application in underwater exploration.
