High Antimicrobial Electrotherapy and Wound Monitoring Hydrogel with Bimetal Phenolic Networks for Smart Healthcare

Qin Yang,Rong Chen,Mingzi Li,Hongzhao Song,Xiaoying Zhao,Liang Zhang,Yuanzhen Zhou,Jiao Chen,Jianli Li,Mi Chen

The design and fabrication of novel soft bioelectronic materials for rapid wound healing and real-time monitoring are critical for smart healthcare. However, developing such integrated multifunctional materials devices remains challenging due to fabrication dynamics and sensing interface issues. Herein, a novel strategy is presented for accelerating the kinetics of hydrogels integrating antimicrobial, electrotherapeutic, and wound monitoring functions via bimetallic phenolic networks. The Al 3+ catalyzes the radical copolymerization reaction of acrylic acid, resulting in the gelation of the system within 10 s, and also catalyzes the redox reaction between silver and lignin, inducing the sustained release of catechol, which significantly enhances the hydrogel's antimicrobial activity and shortened the wound healing process. Meanwhile, the abundant non-covalent interactions enhance the hydrogel's tissue adhesion, and mechanical properties (tensile strength 1.558 MPa and elongation 1563%). In addition, the bimetallic ions endow the hydrogels with excellent sensing properties. Under the synergy of electrical stimulation, the wound healing rate is accelerated. Notably, wound assessment can be performed by monitoring changes in electrical signals over the wound, which can assist physicians and patients in achieving intelligent wound management. This work provides new insights into the design and application of multifunctional smart bioelectronic materials.

Microenvironment-responsive electrocution of tumor and bacteria by implants modified with degenerate semiconductor film

Donghui Wang,Shun Xing,Feng Peng,Xianming Zhang,Ji Tan,Xueqing Hao,Yuqin Qiao,Naijian Ge,Xuanyong Liu

Implantable biomaterials are widely used in the curative resection and palliative treatment of various types of cancers. However, cancer residue around the implants usually leads to treatment failure with cancer reoccurrence. Postoperation chemotherapy and radiation therapy are widely applied to clear the residual cancer cells but induce serious side effects. It is urgent to develop advanced therapy to minimize systemic toxicity while maintaining efficient cancer-killing ability. Herein, we report a degenerate layered double hydroxide (LDH) film modified implant, which realizes microenvironment-responsive electrotherapy. The film can gradually transform into a nondegenerate state and release holes. When in contact with tumor cells or bacteria, the film quickly transforms into a nondegenerate state and releases holes at a high rate, rendering the “electrocution” of tumor cells and bacteria. However, when placed in normal tissue, the hole release rate of the film is much slower, thus, causing little harm to normal cells. Therefore, the constructed film can intelligently identify and meet the physiological requirements promptly. In addition, the transformation between degenerate and nondegenerate states of LDH films can be cycled by electrical charging, so their selective and dynamic physiological functions can be artificially adjusted according to demand.

An Encapsulation-Free and Hierarchical Porous Triboelectric Scaffold with Dynamic Hydrophilicity for Efficient Cartilage Regeneration

Bin Luo,Sinan Wang,Xingqi Song,Shuo Chen,Qiaoyu Qi,Wenyi Chen,Xiaoyuan Deng,Yufeng Ni,Chengzhen Chu,Guangdong Zhou,Xiaohong Qin,Dong Lei,Zhengwei You

Tissue engineering and electrotherapy are two promising methods to promote tissue repair. However, their integration remains an underexplored area, because their requirements on devices are usually distinct. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have shown great potential to develop self-powered devices. However, due to their susceptibility to moisture, TENGs have to be encapsulated in vivo. Therefore, existing TENGs cannot be employed as tissue engineering scaffolds, which require direct interaction with surrounding cells. Here, the concept of triboelectric scaffolds (TESs) is proposed. Poly(glycerol sebacate), a biodegradable and relatively hydrophobic elastomer, is selected as the matrix of TESs. Each hydrophobic micropore in multi-hierarchical porous TESs efficiently serves as a moisture-resistant working unit of TENGs. Integration of tons of micropores ensures the electrotherapy ability of TESs in vivo without encapsulation. Originally hydrophobic TESs are degraded by surface erosion and transformed into hydrophilic surfaces, facilitating their role as tissue engineering scaffolds. Notably, TESs seeded with chondrocytes obtain dense and large matured cartilages after subcutaneous implantation in nude mice. Importantly, rabbits with osteochondral defects receiving TES implantation show favorable hyaline cartilage regeneration and complete cartilage healing. This work provides a promising electronic biomedical device and will inspire a series of new in vivo applications.

Determining Effective Methods of Obtaining Virus-Free Potato for Cultivation in Kazakhstan

Daurov Dias,Daurova Ainash,Karimov Aibek,Tolegenova Dana,Volkov Dmitriy,Raimbek Daniyar,Zhambakin Kabyl,Shamekova Malika

Potato ( Solanum tuberosum L.) is the fourth most common food crop worldwide and one of the main food products in Kazakhstan. One of the factors leading to crop loss in potato is viral disease. There are more than 30 viruses known to cause diseases in potato. Therefore, using virus-free planting material is an important aspect of growing potato. It is relatively difficult to eliminate viruses from plants, despite the application of isolated apical meristems. In this study, we used the most effective methods to eliminate viral infections, such as electrotherapy, chemotherapy (40 and 50 mg/l), cryotherapy, and thermotherapy. Complete elimination of certain viral infections, such as PVM, PVS, PVX, and PVY, was achieved after chemotherapy with 40 mg/l of ribavirin. A multiplex RT-PCR method was used for efficient monitoring of viral infections, which is more precise than the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA). The obtained virus-free planting material will subsequently be used for industrial virus-free potato seed production in Kazakhstan.

Triboelectric-Responsive Drug Delivery Hydrogel for Accelerating Infected Wound Healing

Xuan Qin,Haoliang Shi,Zhen Wen,Binbin Chu,Hongyang Li,Houyu Wang,Yao He,Xuhui Sun

Electrotherapy is of great interest in the field of tissue repair as an effective, well-tolerated, and noninvasive treatment. Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has shown advantages in promoting wound healing due to its peak output characteristic and low Joule heating effect. However, it is limited in infected wound healing due to poor antimicrobial capacity. Here, a wearable triboelectric stimulator (WTS) is developed that consists of a flexible TENG (F-TENG) and a triboelectric-responsive drug delivery hydrogel (TR-DDH) for healing of bacterium-infected wounds. F-TENG can generate pulsed current to wounds by converting mechanical energy from body movements. Polypyrrole is prone to reduction and volume contraction under electrical stimulation, resulting in desorption of curcumin nanoparticles (CUR NPs) from the polypyrrole in TR-DDH. Therefore, the highly efficient and controllable release of CUR NPs can be achieved by triboelectric stimulation. According to the in vitro and in vivo experiments, WTS has the greatest antimicrobial effect and the fastest promotion of infected wound healing compared to treatment with electrical stimulation or curcumin. Finally, the safety assessment demonstrates that the WTS has excellent tissue safety for chronic wound healing. Synergistic therapy with WTS provides an efficient strategy for chronic wound healing and smart-responsive drug delivery systems.
