Adjustable interfacial adhesion is of great significance in smart-hydrogel-related engineering fields. This study presents an electroadhesion strategy for universal and ultrastrong hydrogel bonding with electrically programmable strength. An ionic hydrogel containing lithium ions is designed to achieve hydrated-ion-diffusion-mediated interfacial adhesion, where external electric fields are employed to precisely control spatiotemporal dynamics of the ion diffusion across ionic adhesion region (IAR). The hydrogel can realize a universal, ultrastrong, efficient, tough, reversible, and environmentally tolerant electroadhesion to diverse hydrogels, whose peak adhesion strength and interfacial adhesion toughness are as high as 1.2 MPa and 3750 J m −2 , respectively. With a mechanoelectric coupling model, the dominant role of the hydrated ions in IAR played in the interfacial electroadhesion is further quantitatively revealed. The proposed strategy opens a door for developing high-performance adhesion hydrogels with electrically programmable functions, which are indispensable for various emerging fields like flexible electronics and soft robotics.

The drift or fall of stretchable neural microelectrodes from the surface of wet and dynamic tissues severely hampers the adoption of microelectrodes for electrophysiological signal monitoring. Endowing the stretchable electrodes with adhesive ability is an effective way to overcome these problems. Current adhesives form tough adhesion to tissues by covalent interaction, which decreases the biocompatibility of the adhesives. Here, we fabricate a strong electrostatic adhesive (noncovalent interaction), highly conformal, stretchable microelectrode arrays (MEAs) for the electrophysiological interface. This MEA was composed of polypyrrole (PPy) as the electrode material and hydrogel as the stretchable substrate [the cross-linked and copolymerized hydrogel of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS), gelatin, chitosan, 2-methoxyethyl acrylate, and acrylic acid is named PAGMA]. Strong and stable electrostatic adhesion (85 kPa) and high stretchability (100%) allow for the integration of PPy MEAs based on the PAGMA hydrogel substrate (PPy–PAGMA MEAs) on diverse wet dynamic tissues. Additionally, by adjusting the concentration of AMPS in PAGMA, the hydrogel (PAGMA-1) can produce tough adhesion to many inorganic and elastomer materials. Finally, the PPy–PAGMA MEAs were toughly and conformally adhered on the rat’s subcutaneous muscle and beating heart, and the rat’s electrophysiological signals were successfully recorded. The development of these adhesive MEAs offers a promising strategy to establish stable and compliant electrode–tissue interfaces.

The electroadhesion strategy driven by hydrated ion diffusion in functional hydrogels enables controllable soft interface adhesion, offering a new solution for smart interfacial interactions. This is crucial for various engineering applications such as tissue repair, soft robotics, and wearable electronics. However, the intrinsic mechanisms of interfacial adhesion and failure associated with the electroadhesion strategy remain unclear. With an incremental digital image correlation (DIC) technique, we comprehensively investigated the spatiotemporal dynamics of interfacial deformation and failure modulated by electrically controllable hydrated ion diffusion in electroadhesive hydrogels. We also visualized the spatiotemporal evolution of mechanical properties near adhesion interfaces, including interfacial toughness, initial elastic modulus, and nominal secant modulus, under various electrical stimulations. Furthermore, we recognized the transition of adhered specimens from adhesive failure to cohesive failure, driven by the applied external electrical stimulation. This work not only presents a DIC-based characterization method for quantifying the mechanical responses of adhesive interfaces in functional hydrogels, but also provides insights into how electrically regulated hydrated ions dominate interfacial adhesion and failure dynamics in electroadhesive hydrogels, which paves the way to guide the design of future high-performance electroadhesive hydrogels.

Dielectric elastomers (DEs) function as deformable capacitors capable of generating mechanical work under an applied electric field. Despite their promise, the practical deployment of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) is limited by challenges in scalable fabrication and achieving high mechanical output. In this work, a high-performance, reversibly crosslinkable DE is presented based on a tailored polysiloxane network. By optimizing ratio of short- and long-chain segments, the elastomer exhibits enhanced electromechanical performance, achieving a maximum areal strain of 19.09% at 18 kV mm −1 without the need for prestretching—outperforming conventional DE materials. Furthermore, an efficient, scalable, and high-yield dry stacking process that is introduced, enables the fabrication of multilayer actuators while maintaining the superior performance of single-layer films. As a demonstration, a lightweight soft gripper based on this actuator effectively manipulates complex and delicate objects, lifting loads up to 500 times its own weight using a combination of electroadhesion and dielectric actuation. These results highlight the potential of this dielectric elastomer for advancing soft robotics and next-generation flexible actuators technologies.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gels, as electroactive polymers , have various applications in the fields of soft actuators and sensors. The relationship between the structure and electromechanical properties of PVC gels, however, has not been fully understood so far. In this work, the effect of different alkyl chain length of 1-allyl- imidazolium cations of tetrafluoroborate (BF 4 )-based ionic liquid (IL) on structure, mechanical and dielectric properties , bending actuation, sensing and electroadhesion properties of plasticized polyvinyl chloride/dibutyl adipate (PVC/DBA) gel were investigated. The interaction between DBA and ILs in PVC/DBA/IL gels leads to the disruption of interactions between inter-DBA molecules and subsequent formation of DBA-rich phases with DBA/IL complexes. The number of DBA-rich phases in PVC/DBA/IL gels increases as the alkyl chain length of the cation in IL increases, due to an enhanced interaction between DBA and ILs with an increase in the alkyl chain length of the cation in IL. The Young's modulus of the PVC/DBA gel was slightly reduced, while the dielectric constant significantly increased when IL was added. Additionally, the bending actuation properties and capacitance pressure sensing sensitivity of the PVC/DBA/IL gel increased with an increase in the alkyl chain length of the cation of IL. However, there was an opposite trend observed for electroadhesion peel strength . Among the studied PVC/DBA/IL gels, the bending displacement, pressure sensing sensitivity, and electroadhesion peel strength of PVC/DBA/IL gel with 3.2 wt% of 1-allyl-3-butylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([ABIM]BF 4 ) increased by 2.6 times, 7.5 times, and 1.7 times compared to PVC/DBA gel, respectively. These results provide new insights into understanding the relationship between structure and electromechanical properties of PVC gels for their application in actuation, sensing, and electroadhesion integrated soft grippers.

Reversible adhesions have exhibited a great potential in the biomedical field. Here, we designed a reversible electroadhesion between anionic κ-carrageeenan hydrogel and physiological saline-based nonionic polyacrylamide hydrogel through the low and controllable ion migration. A robust adhesion was obtained between the hydrogel pairs via a direct current (DC) of 10 V. Upon the application of a reverse voltage, the pair could be effortlessly and rapidly detached. We elucidated the mechanism of reversible electroadhesion through electrochemical analysis, attributing the adhesion to the formation of double ion layers between the adhesive interfaces under the electrical field and pH variation. When a reverse voltage was applied, the adhesion strength was dropped lower than 0.1 kPa and the detachment was occurred due to the disruption of the double ion layer by ionic migration and even diffusion. Moreover, the adhesion system demonstrated outstanding electrochemical stability, with less than a 7 % variation in charge storage capability after 1000 cycles. The proposed strategy paves the way for developing high-performance adhesion hydrogels with electrically controllable functions, which are indispensable for various emerging fields like tissue repair and soft biomedical applications.
