Novel solid acid catalyst PWAl-200 was synthesized by a new green method of electric-flocculation of phosphotungstic acid (PW) with aluminum as electrodes to transform glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF). Through electric-flocculation, PW was deposited in the hydrated aluminum received from electrolysis. Then the obtained floc was treated by hydrothermal process to get solid acid. Characterization results showed that after electric-flocculation, the electron-withdrawing influence of terminal W O in the PW on hydrated aluminum formed Lewis (L) acid sites on these six-coordinated aluminum. The H + derived from PW could supply Brønsted (B) acid sites. In the further hydrothermal treatment, hydrated aluminum dehydrated to produce reformed six-coordinated aluminum. It was linked to heteropoly anions ligands through oxygen bridges, producing more L acid center. Besides, four-coordinated aluminum formed from the hydrated aluminum. The positive charge it produced increased L acid sites due to the strong effect of nearby tungsten species, further adjusting to a moderate ratio of Lewis/Brønsted (L/B) on solid acid for catalytic synthesis 5-HMF from glucose. The highest yield was 61.7% at 170 ℃ for 4 h and the catalyst could be recycled for four times and tend to stabilize.

Graphical Wasteful to useful : A series of sludges is produced by using a simple electroflocculation method to deal with industrial printing and dyeing wastewater. The sludges can be directly and effectively made into anodes for Li-ion batteries. The performance of the electrodes can be improved by adding different proportions of super P® conductive carbon black. This strategy not only helps to decrease the cost of waste treatment but also provides a possibility to apply the treatment products in a distributed energy storage device. Iron-containing sludges (DW/Fe) were prepared by the electroflocculation of industrial printing and dyeing wastewater (DW). To investigate the formation process and the properties of the DW/Fe sludges and their application in anode materials in Li-ion batteries, the DW/Fe sludges were compared to three other sludges (MB/Fe, RB/Fe, Ta/Fe) prepared from model solutions that contained either methyl blue (MB), rhodamine B (RB), or tartrazine (Ta). The DW/Fe sludges were calcined at 500 °C under N 2 to form iron oxide/carbon composite C-DW/Fe. The composition and structure of the sludges and the C-DW/Fe composite were analyzed by using FTIR spectroscopy, XRD, thermogravimetric analysis, SEM, TEM, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and their performances as anodes of Li-ion batteries were studied by adding different proportions of conductive agent (super P® conductive carbon black). Our results show that the sludges are a complex mixture of Fe 3 O 4 and organic matter. The specific capacity and stability can be improved during the charge–discharge test by increasing the amount of carbon black. Importantly, this improvement is more pronounced on DW/Fe that does not require high-temperature carbonization, which means that the sludges cannot only protect the environment and avoid the waste of resources but also can be used directly and widely in decentralized energy storage devices.

The large amount of municipal wastewater discharged into urban rivers sometimes exceeds the rivers’ self-purification capacity leading to black-odorous polluted water. Electro-flocculation has emerged as a powerful remediation technology. Electro-flocculation in a bubble column tower with a bipolar electrode (BPE) was tested in an attempt to overcome the high resistance and weak gas-floatation observed with a monopolar electrode (MPE) in treating such water. The BPE reactor tested had a Ti/Ta 2 O 5 -IrO2 anode and a graphite cathode with an iron or aluminum bipolar electrode suspended between them. It was tested for its ability to reduce turbidity, phosphate and sulphion and to increase the concentration of dissolved oxygen. The inclusion of the bipolar electrode was found to distinctly improved the system’s conductivity. The system’s electro-flocculation and electrical floatation removed turbidity, phosphate and sulphion completely, and the dissolved oxygen level improved from 0.29 to 6.28 mg/L. An aluminum bipolar electrode performed better than an iron one. Changes in the structure of the microbial community confirmed a significant improvement in water quality.

With the increasing severity of microplastic (MPs) pollution in aquatic environments, the process of removing MPs from water environments by electrocoagulation (EC) technology has attracted widespread attention. In this study, EC using a dimensionally stable anode (DSA)-coated Ti electrode (RuO₂-IrO₂/Ti) under pulsed current was employed to treat wastewater containing polystyrene (PS) MPs. The effects of factors such as electrolyte concentration, initial solution pH, current density, pulse frequency, and pulse duty cycle on the PS removal efficiency were investigated. The results showed that the maximum PS removal of 94.2 % was achieved with an energy consumption of 5.5 kWh/g. The removal mechanism of PS was elucidated through analyses including scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of electrode, X-ray diffraction, fourier transform infrared, and zeta potential measurement of the flocs. Finally, the article conducts an economic analysis of this technology and provides an outlook on its application prospects. This study confirms that the EC technology using RuO₂-IrO₂/Ti can remove MPs from wastewater effectively, which may provide new insights for the development of MPs removal technologies.

Heavy metals seriously endanger human health. However, simultaneous and efficient removal of heavy metals from wastewater has always been a technical challenge. For this purpose, we developed a self-sustained bioelectrical reduction system (SBRS) for the efficient purification of heavy metal wastewater. A novel iron-manganese doped metal-organic framework membrane (FM-MOFM) based on conductive substrate is used as the catalytic cathode electrode. The performances of the SBRS assisted FM-MOFM for heavy metals reduction and self-energy generation for the treatment of simulated electroplating wastewater were investigated. The FM-MOFMs were characterized before and after operation by SEM, XRD , XPS and other methods. Copper, zinc, chromium, nickel heavy metal ions are almost completely removed by the SBRS (removal efficiency: Copper ion 99.9%, Zinc ion 99.9%, Chromium ion 99.7% and Nickel ion 99.8%). Moreover, the organic substrates in the wastewater were removed simultaneously and efficiently (removal efficiency: COD 95.3%, NH 4 + -N 99.9%, TP 95.9%), with the maximum power density of 1.6 W m −3 . The possible electroreduction and electroflocculation mechanism of heavy metal ions can be understood by the characterization of the membrane electrode surface and precipitate. The study confirms that the SBRS is a potential and efficient candidate for the simultaneous removal of heavy metals from electroplating wastewater.

Landfill leachate usually contains a substantial content of refractory dissolved organic matter (RDOM), which mainly consists of humic acid and fulvic acid. RDOM easily blocks the membrane pores resulting in membrane fouling when treated using membrane technologies, and it costs abundant chemical regents using advanced oxidation processes. To achieve the economically efficient treatment of RDOM in landfill leachate, this study established the electroflocculation coupled with ozone (EFCO) system. EFCO achieved a higher removal for organic matter than single electroflocculation and ozonation, where RDOM was the main component of organic matter in landfill leachate. The remaining RDOM was decomposed into lots of micromolecule weight and biodegradable proteins and lipids. Ozone improved the removal of dissolved organic matter (DOM) mainly by changing the functional groups on its surface and improving the mechanical strength of flocs to enhance the complexation between flocs and DOM. Cl 2 − and ClO produced in the EFCO system were the main active chlorine species, which enhanced the mineralization of RDOM. The study provides an efficient method for the pretreatment of RDOM in landfill leachate.
