This study aims to employ poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and poly(p-dioxanone) (PPDO), loaded with naringin (NAR) to fabricate a functionalized degradable mesh which can promote abdominal wall hernia (AWH) repair. Three meshes named PPDO, PLLA/PPDO, and PLLA/PPDO/NAR were fabricated by electrospinning. The physical and chemical properties of the meshes were evaluated from the aspects of morphology, wettability, chemical composition, mechanical properties, and in vitro degradation. Then, the meshes were implanted into rats to evaluate their repair effects on abdominal wall defect models. The mechanical properties of PLLA/PPDO/NAR mesh were superior to the other two meshes, with a fixed tensile strength of 36.47 ± 2.40 N cm−1 and an elongation at break of 287.98% ± 51.67%, which adequately met the mechanical strength required for the human abdominal wall. The core–shell structure effectively delayed the degradation of PLLA/PPDO as well as PLLA/PPDO/NAR mesh, and drug release of PLLA/PPDO/NAR mesh. On the 7th, 14th, and 28th day after implantation, more neovascularization and tissue formation were observed in the PLLA/PPDO/NAR group and the newborn collagen was arranged in a regular and neat manner compared to the other two groups. The immunohistochemical results showed that the PLLA/PPDO/NAR mesh promoted abdominal wall repair by inhibiting the expression of matrix metalloproteinase2 as well as interleukin-6, and increasing the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor. The PLLA/PPDO/NAR mesh is promising for application in AWH repair.

A novel strategy for highly sensitive colorimetric detection of gaseous formaldehyde was developed based on Methyl Yellow-impregnated electro-spinning/netting (ESN) nylon 6 nano-fiber/nets (NFN). The sensor presented a significant reflectance intensity decreasing band at 550 nm which induce the visual color changes from yellow to red after exposure to formaldehyde and allowed for the detection of formaldehyde with a low detection limit of 50 ppb. Upon exposure to a series of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), only formaldehyde could induce a yellow-to-red color change observable by the naked eye, which clearly exhibited that Methyl Yellow-impregnated nylon 6 NFN membranes could act as highly selective and sensitive strips to detect formaldehyde with minor interference from other VOCs. Additionally, the colorimetric sensor showed good reproducibility under cyclic sensing experiments. Furthermore, the colorimetric responses were visualized quantitative by using a color-differentiation map prepared form converted RGB (red, green and blue) values. As-prepared Methyl Yellow-impregnated nylon 6 NFN sensor strips successfully combined with the visualized detection of color map and fascinating structure of NFN membranes, which indicated promising composite materials as a simple and economical alternative to replace the traditional formaldehyde sensors and facilitated the design and development of other label-free colorimetric sensors toward various analytes based on the NFN template.

Tight manipulation of the initial leukocytes infiltration and macrophages plasticity toward the M2 phenotype remain a challenge for diabetic wound healing. Inspired by the platelet function and platelet–macrophage interaction, a platelet-anchored polylactic acid- b -polyethylene glycol- b -polylactic acid (PLA-PEG-PLA) electrospun dressing is developed for inflammatory modulation and diabetic wounds healing acceleration. PLA-PEG-PLA electrospun meshes encapsulated with thymosin β 4 (T β 4) and CaCl 2 is fabricated with electrospinning, followed by immersion of electrospun mesh in platelet-rich plasma to firmly anchor the platelets. It is demonstrated that the anchored platelets on electrospun mesh can enhance the initial macrophage recruitment and control the T β 4 release from electrospun meshes to facilitate the macrophages polarization to the M2 phenotype. The inflammatory regulation promotes the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor and the migration of vascular endothelial cells for angiogenesis, resulting in accelerated diabetic wounds healing. Therefore, this work paved a new way to design platelet-inspired electrospun meshes for inflammation manipulation and diabetic wound healing.
