Constructing Electrically and Mechanically Self-Healing Elastomers by Hydrogen Bonded Intermolecular Network

Ruiyu Yang,Yujin Yao,Zaihua Duan,Zhen Yuan,Huiling Tai,Yadong Jiang,Yonghao Zheng,Dongsheng Wang

One key limitation of artificial skin-like materials is the shortened service life caused by mechanical damages during practical applications. The ability to self-heal can effectively extend the material service life, reduce the maintenance cost, and ensure safety. Therefore, it is important and necessary to fabricate materials with simultaneously mechanical and electrical self-healing behavior in a facile and convenient way. Herein, we report a stretchable and conductive self-healing elastomer based on intermolecular networks between poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) through a facile and convenient postreduction and one-pot method. The introduction of rGO provides the PAA-GO elastomers with good mechanical stability and electrical properties. Moreover, this material exhibited both electrical and mechanical self-healing properties. After cutting, the elastomers self-healed quickly (∼30 s) and efficiently (∼95%) at room temperature. The elastomers were accurate and reliable in detecting external strain even after healing. The elastomers were further applied for strain sensors, which were attached directly to human skin to monitor external movements, including finger bending and wrist twisting.

Liquid Metal-Based Self-Healable and Elastic Conductive Fiber in Complex Operating Conditions

Yin Zhou,Yingying Zhu,Zuan Hu,Xiaoying Yang,Pengkun Yang,Lu Huang,Yingpeng Wu

Flexible conductive fibers are essential for wearable electronics and smart electronic textiles. However, in complex operating conditions, conductive fibers will inevitably fracture or damage. Herein, we have developed an elastic conductive self-healable fiber (C-SHF), of which the electrical and mechanical properties can efficiently heal in a wide operating range, including room temperature, underwater, and low temperature. This advantage can be owed to the combination of reversible covalent imine bond and disulfide bond, as well as the instantaneous self-healing ability of liquid metal. The C-SHF, with stretchability, conductivity stability, and universal self-healing properties, can be used as an electrical signal transmission line at high strain and under different operating conditions. Besides, C-SHF was assembled into a double-layer capacitor structure to construct a self-healable sensor, which can effectively respond to pressure as a wearable motion detector.

Deep Eutectic-Based All-Solid-State Conductive Elastomers: Achieving Antibacterial, Conductive, and Transparent Properties

Yue Han,Kai Zhao,Ying Jia,Ren’ai Li,Guangxue Chen,Minghui He

All-solid-state conductive elastomers (ACEs) are known as ideal functional materials for wearable electronic devices because they can reasonably circumvent the risks of water evaporation and ionic liquid leakage posed by hydrogel-based and ionogel-based conductive elastomers. However, antibacterial-type ACEs that are highly conductive, highly stretchable, and highly transparent at the same time are rare. Herein, based on the design concept of polymerizable deep eutectic solvents, we report for the first time a series of ACEs with these excellent integrated performances, consisting of hard (AAm/ChCl) and soft (HEA/ChCl). Among them, ACE1.5 with AgNWs embedded on the surface has excellent antibacterial properties (>99% inhibitory activity against E. coli and S. aureus), surface conductivity (∼6.34 S m–1), good tensile properties (∼890%), relatively high transparency (∼80% in the visible range), and excellent electrical self-healing capabilities (∼92% at 0.3 s at room temperature). Furthermore, flexible circuits constructed with ACE1.5 as the elastic substrate have better electrical stability (less than 1% change in resistance over 300%). Due to their excellent performance characteristics and simple processing, these ACEs are expected to find further applications in wearable electronics.

Readily prepared and processed multifunctional MXene nanocomposite hydrogels for smart electronics

Jiahui Huang,Xianwu Huang,Peiyi Wu

Booming sophisticated robotics and prosthetics put forward high requirements on soft conductive materials that can bridge electronics and biology, those soft conductive materials should imitate the mechanical properties of biological tissues and build information transmission networks. Until now, it remains a great challenge to handle the trade-off among ease of preparation, high conductivity, processability, mechanical adaptability, and external stimuli responsiveness. Herein, a kind of readily prepared and processed multifunctional MXene nanocomposite hydrogel is reported, which is prepared via the fast gelation of cationic monomer initiated by delaminated MXene sheets. The gelation time can be adjusted (several seconds to minutes) based on the MXene loadings. By adjusting the MXene ratio, the resulting nanocomposites are ultrastretchable (>5000%), three-dimensional (3D) printable, and show outstanding mechanical and electrical self-healing. As expected, the integration of multifunctional systems onto various substrates (e.g., gloves and masks) is further demonstrated via 3D printing and could achieve diverse sensory capabilities toward strain, pressure, and temperature, showing great prospects as smart flexible electronics.
