An ion-selective Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 membrane for electrolytic lithium extraction from brine

Tong Zhou,Nan Zhang,Qi Li,Guoyao Li,Haidong Sun,Chenglan Zhang,Juan Li,Hezhou Liu,Huanan Duan

The rapid increase in the commercialization of electric vehicles and portable electronics has markedly raised the demand for lithium resources. Extracting lithium from brine has become a critical pathway to address future lithium production challenges. However, the lithium extraction efficiency of conventional technologies is limited by the low levels of Li + and the high Mg 2+ /Li + ratio present in brine. A method involving one-step electrolysis with a solid-state electrolyte has been introduced for the direct and efficient extraction of metallic lithium. Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) is considered a highly promising selective membrane for large-scale lithium extraction from brine sources due to its low cost, excellent stability, and high ionic conductivity. Herein, LATP electrolytes were synthesized through the optimization of solid-state reaction conditions. The resulting LATP pellets exhibited a high relative density of 98.29 % and an impressive ionic conductivity of 3.88 × 10 −4  S cm −1 . The lithium extraction device utilizing LATP as a selective membrane achieved a remarkable current efficiency of 97.4 % and a high lithium production rate of 40.4 μg h −1  cm −2 . After lithium extraction process, the LATP pellets retained the ionic conductivity of 2.69 × 10 −4  S cm −1 and preserved the sodium super ion conductors (NASICON) crystal structure. This study presents an efficient Li + selective membrane for extracting lithium directly from natural brine.

Resourceful Utilization of Ironmaking Waste: Synthesis of Ti5Si3 Alloy from Titanium-Bearing Blast Furnace Slag

Zhongya Pang,Shun Chen,Zhenqiang Jiang,Chenyang Han,Xing Yu,Kai Zheng,Chaoyi Chen,Guangshi Li,Qian Xu,Xingli Zou,Xionggang Lu

Titanium-bearing blast furnace slag (TBFS), a byproduct of ironmaking processes, has long been discarded as waste, resulting in the squandering of valuable resources such as titanium. The recovery and effective utilization of TBFS hold immense significance and importance. This study reports a direct electrolysis method for synthesizing Ti5Si3 alloy from a TBFS/SiO2 mixture in molten CaCl2 at 950 °C. A comprehensive investigation was conducted into the phase and morphological evolution during the electrolysis process, along with an analysis of the migration behavior of impurities such as Ca and Al present in TBFS. The synthesized Ti5Si3 alloy powder was systematically characterized and analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and other techniques. The results reveal that the electrolysis process encompasses electrochemical deoxidation, in-situ alloying, and self-purification. Furthermore, this study achieved further purification of the Ti5Si3 alloy through vacuum laser rapid melting, effectively volatilizing and removing the residual impurity elements, resulting in an increase in the purity of Ti5Si3 alloy from 96.8% to 98.6%. The resultant Ti5Si3 alloy exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in phosphate buffer solution. In summary, this work provides a crucial technical paradigm and scientific theoretical foundation for the resourceful and value-added utilization of ironmaking solid waste, specifically TBFS.

An electrolysis–displacement–distillation approach for the production of Li, Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba metals

Lei Guo,Shuaibo Gao,Zuojun Hu,Yongxin Wu,Fangzhao Pang,Huayi Yin,Dihua Wang

Green metal-electrode batteries call for the clean production of s-block metals. Herein, we developed an electrolysis–displacement–distillation (EDD) approach for producing s-block metals with low-carbon emissions and no chlorine gas evolution. The clean production stems from the choice of a molten NaCl–Na2CO3 electrolyte to prevent chlorine gas evolution, an inert nickel-based anode to produce oxygen, and a liquid metal cathode to make the cathodic product (e.g., Na–Sn) sit at the bottom of the electrolytic cell. Later, M–Sn (M = Li, Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba) alloys were successfully prepared by a displacement reaction between the Na–Sn alloy and molten NaCl–LiCl, NaCl–MgCl2, NaCl–CaCl2, NaCl–SrCl2, or NaCl–BaCl2 with a displacement efficiency of >96.0%. Furthermore, Li, Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba metals were separated from M–Sn alloys using vacuum distillation with a separation rate of >95.0%. We achieved a current efficiency of 81.0% for the electrolytic production of 100 kg of a liquid Na–Sn alloy, which holds promise to produce s-block metals at a large scale.

Simultaneous peeling of precious metals in cathode and anode of spent ternary batteries using electrolysis

Hui Liu,Xuanrui Huang,Rui Tang,Yulin Min,Qunjie Xu,Zhenhu Hu,Penghui Shi

Recycling spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is of great significance for both environmental protection and resource recycling. However, there are only a few studies on the simultaneous peeling and recycling of battery anode and cathode. Thus, this work proposed a new process for peeling cathode and anode in spent LIBs to solve this problem. The cathode and anode of the spent LIBs were used to form an electrolytic cell to simultaneously realize the peeling of the electrode materials and current collectors and a large amount of Li + leaching. The leaching rate of Li + reached 96.19 % under optimal conditions. In addition, the Li + in the electrolyte can be directly heated and concentrated to be recovered in the form of Li 2 CO 3 . Furthermore, the peeling of cathode materials was caused by the gas shock and defluorination of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). For the Li-free materials, the chemical separation and precipitation method was used to separate and recover Ni, Co, and Mn. In conclusion, this experiment carried out an environmentally friendly electrolysis recycling technique to realize the selective pre-recovery of Li + , the separation of electrode materials with current collectors, and the high purity recovery of current collectors. A new peeling mechanism for the electrolysis recycling technique was also explored. Therefore, this study was expected to provide a useful reference for the electrolysis recycling technique.

High-purity electrolytic lithium obtained from low-purity sources using solid electrolyte

Lang Jialiang,Jin Yang,Liu Kai,Long Yuanzheng,Zhang Haitian,Qi Longhao,Wu Hui,Cui Yi

Lithium (Li) is an important resource for the sustainability of socioeconomic systems given its wide use in various industrial applications. The industrial production of Li metals relies on the electrolysis of a mixture consisting of high-purity lithium chloride (LiCl) and potassium chloride. However, the purification of LiCl is expensive and unsustainable, requiring a substantial amount of energy and the use of noxious chemical reagents, so that producing high-purity Li efficiently and sustainably is a challenge. Herein we report a new method of producing high-purity electrolytic Li from low-purity LiCl using solid-state electrolyte. Taking advantage of the high Li-ion selectivity of the solid electrolyte, we directly obtained high-purity metallic Li through the electrolysis of low-purity LiCl. Our new method provides two important advantages over conventional methods: (1) the cost of producing high-purity Li is reduced by using low-purity LiCl from low-grade brine, and the simpler purification process reduces the use of energy and chemical reagents; and (2) the operating temperature of the electrolytic process decreases from 400 °C to 240 °C, leading to an additional reduction in energy use.

Large-Area and Patternable Nano-Dot Array from Electrolysis of ITO Film for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Lu Han,Han Gengxin,Cao Jieping,Jin Mingliang,Ma Qilin,Akinoglu Eser Metin,Wang Xin,Nian Li,Zhou Guofu,Shui Lingling

Fabrication of large-area devices with patternable nanostructures is important for practical applications in optical or electrical devices. In this work, we describe an easy and environment-friendly method for preparing large-area nano-dot (ND) arrays via the electrolytic reaction of a metal oxide film. NDs with various size and morphology can be obtained by adjusting the applied voltage, electrolysis time, and the film thickness of the indium tin oxide (ITO) layer. High-density NDs with size of 50–60 nm can be obtained by electrolysis of a 25-nm-thick ITO film at 150 V for 1.5 min under a water droplet medium, which have been applied for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) after depositing a thin layer of silver. The SERS substrate with optimized ND structure exhibits sensitive detection of Rhodamine 6G (R6G) with detection limit down to 5 × 10 -12  M. The enhancement factors (EFs) of 1.12 × 10 6 and 6.79 × 10 5 have been achieved for characterization of 4-methylbenzenethiol (4-MBT) and R6G, respectively. With an additional photolithographic step, multiple areas of ND arrays can be created on one substrate, enabling simultaneous detection of various samples containing different molecules at once experiment. Such a method is quick, easy, patternable, and environment-friendly, being suitable for on-site quick and synchronous determination of various molecules for applications in point-of-care, environmental monitoring, and airport security fields.
