Aqueous zinc metal batteries (AZMBs) as one of the next-generation energy storage technologies have attracted both academic and industrial attention due to their high safety, low cost, and high specific energy, yet are facing interfacial challenges at the electrolyte/anode interface, e.g. uneven physical diffusion of Zn2+ flux, severe chemical corrosion, and disordered electrochemical deposition behavior of the zinc metal anode. To address these issues, herein, we propose a facile and effective electrolyte modulating strategy to construct a physico-chemo-electrochemically coupled stable interface between the aqueous electrolyte and zinc anode. The aqueous electrolyte modified using a tiny amount of water-soluble ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMIMBF4) can form a positively charged organic EMIM+ adsorption layer and a protective inorganic Zn2+-conducting layer through the in situ decomposition of BF4− on the zinc anode surface, thus effectively homogenizing the Zn2+ diffusion flux and decreasing the chemical corrosion rate. Moreover, EMIM+ provides an electrostatic shielding layer, leading to the preferential and ordered electrodeposition of Zn2+ along the Zn (002). Benefiting from this physico-chemo-electrochemically multifunctional interfacial layer, the Zn//Zn symmetric cells achieve a considerably extended lifespan of up to 1200 h at 5 mA cm−2 and 5 mA h cm−2, and more than 450 h even at an ultrahigh current density and large deposition capacity (10 mA cm−2 and 10 mA h cm−2). Zn//Cu asymmetric cells also exhibit excellent reversibility with a high coulombic efficiency of 99.75%. Furthermore, the physically, chemically, and electrochemically stabilized interface enables the AZMB with a quinone-based cathode to offer high specific capacity (256.9 mA h g−1) and a decent capacity retention rate (83.9% after 300 cycles).

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have great potential for next-generation rechargeable batteries due to the high theoretical capacity and ideal compatibility coupled with diverse cathode materials . However, the random Li deposition associated with the large local space charge caused by the anion depletion near the surface of anode, as well as the insufficient reduction of Li + related to the suppressed Li + solvation process induced by the electrostatic force between anion and cation hinder the development of high-energy-density LMBs. Herein, as evidenced theoretically and experimentally, we simultaneously eliminate the anion depletion region and promote the lithium salt dissociation by employing ZIF-67 with unsaturated metal sites as anionphilic additive to regulate anion distribution and weaken its bond with Li + . As a result, the short-circuit hazard is remitted in symmetrical cell with modified electrolyte at 3 mA cm −2 under capacity of 3 mAh cm −2 for more than 2000 h. As employed for the lithium-sulfur battery with high sulfur loading of 4.5 mg cm −2 , the modulated electrolyte enables the battery delivering an initial capacity of 713 mAh g −1 with decay rate of 0.05% per cycle over 100 cycles at 3 mA cm −2 . This work demonstrates an efficient and scalable strategy for constructing dendrite-free LMBs via eliminating the anion depletion region and facilitating the Li + solvation process.

Aqueous copper-based batteries have many favourable properties and have thus attracted considerable attention, but their application is limited by their low operating voltage originating from the high potential of copper negative electrode (0.34 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). Herein, we propose a coordination strategy for reducing the intrinsic negative electrode redox potential in aqueous copper-based batteries and thus improving their operating voltage. This is achieved by establishing an appropriate coordination environment through the electrolyte tailoring via Cl − ions. When coordinated with chlorine, the intermediate Cu + ions in aqueous electrolytes are successfully stabilized and the electrochemical process is decoupled into two separate redox reactions involving Cu 2+ /Cu + and Cu + /Cu 0 ; Cu + /Cu 0 results in a redox potential approximately 0.3 V lower than that for Cu 2+ /Cu 0 . Compared to the coordination with water, the coordination with chlorine also results in higher copper utilization, more rapid redox kinetics, and superior cycle stability. An aqueous copper-chlorine battery, harnessing Cl − /Cl 0 redox reaction at the positive electrode, is discovered to have a high discharge voltage of 1.3 V, and retains 77.4% of initial capacity after 10,000 cycles. This work may open up an avenue to boosting the voltage and energy of aqueous copper batteries.

The structures and properties of the electric double layer (EDL) on zinc (Zn) anodes significantly influence the cycling and rate performance of aqueous Zn batteries (ZBs). Here, a strategy is reported to regulate the EDL structure through work function ( W f ) engineering to effectively enhance the electrochemical performance of ZBs, which is enabled by electrolyte-tailored growth of heterogenous metal with a large W f on the Zn anode. The metal-to-metal charge transfer in heterostructured Zn metal induced by the disparity of W f increases the surface charge density, which enriches the Zn ions and shortens the thickness of EDL. The compressed EDL weakens the repulsive force of Zn deposits to achieve a tightly stacked and dendrite-free Zn deposition. Besides, the formed H 2 O-deficient EDL structure enables the inorganic-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) with high Zn-ion conductivity to inhibit the notorious parasitic reactions and improve the electrode reaction kinetics. Consequently, the Zn||Zn symmetric cells demonstrate an ultra-long cycling life over 2700 cycles (the cumulative capacity reaches 5400 mA h cm −2 ) at a high current density of 50 mA cm −2 . The Zn anodes show a high average Coulombic efficiency of 99.70% over 3650 cycles. The Zn||MnO 2 full cells exhibit excellent practical-level performance under cyclic continuous mode (3000-cycle life at high rates) and cyclic intermittent mode (1170-cycle life with 83.05% capacity retention). Practical pouch cells are also demonstrated with outstanding cycling performance.
