Investigation of ionic and electronic mechanisms of nanogenerators based on multifunctional wood

Zeng Xu,Liu Xintian,Sun Zhengnan,Wang Yilin,He Changliu,Tang Wenjie,Zhang Xiaosheng

In the modern age of the Internet of Things, nanogenerators have advanced due to their stability, portability, and sustainability. This study focuses on high-performance wood-based nanogenerators. Natural wood possesses a unique three-dimensional microstructure with hierarchical, interconnected channels aligned along its growth direction. This porous, highly oriented structure of wood was fully studied and maintained during the whole delignification process. Calcium chloride and silver nanowires were used as backfilling agents in the delignified wood, enhancing its electrical conductivity. The resulting conductive wood served as both the friction layer and electrode, forming a single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator with excellent electrical output performance. Our findings highlight the potential of multifunctional wood as an eco-friendly, sustainable energy source, contributing to the future of smart cities.

Self-Powered Sensors Made with Fabric-Based Electrodes and a Conductive Coating

Wenping Cheng,Jie Dong,Runjun Sun

Amidst the growing challenge of meeting global energy demands with conventional sources, self-powered devices offer promising solution. Flexible and stretchable electronics are pivotal in wearable technology, enhancing the scope and functionality of these devices. This study employs potassium sodium niobite–lithium antimonate (K0.5Na0.5NbO3–LiSbO3) nanoparticles as fillers in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to fabricate piezoelectric thin films. These films are integrated with fabric-based electrodes to develop high-performance, flexible self-powered sensors. The sensor comprises a fabric-based electrode with polypyrrole (PPy) coated on plain nylon fabric, a 0.93KNN-0.07LS/PVDF composite piezoelectric thin film, and a protective PET layer. Results demonstrate that the 0.93KNN-0.07LS/PVDF–PPy/nylon composite sensors exhibit a stable piezoelectric output. Under 6 Hz and 10 N excitation, the piezoelectric output reaches approximately 6.1 V upon pressing. Additionally, the device shows good linear sensitivity in the 2–20 N pressure range and produces clear, regular output waveforms under cyclic pressures of varying frequencies and amplitudes, indicating excellent response repeatability. Even after extensive bending, twisting, and 5000 pressing cycles, the sensors maintain considerable cyclic stability, demonstrating high durability. These tests collectively indicate that the developed sensors possess high sensitivity, flexibility, durability, stability, and significant self-powered potential. This research provides a reference for the next generation of textile-based electrodes and offers potential strategies for flexible, wearable applications.

Moist-Induced Electricity Generation by Electrospun Cellulose Acetate Membranes with Optimized Porous Structures

Quanqian Lyu,Bolun Peng,Zhanjun Xie,Shuo Du,Lianbin Zhang,Jintao Zhu

Harvesting energy from moist in the atmosphere has recently been demonstrated as an effective manner for a portable power supply to meet the ever-increasing demands of energy consumption. Porous materials are shown to have great potential in moist-induced electricity generation. Herein, we report moist-induced electricity generation by electrospun cellulose acetate (CA) membranes with optimized porous structures. We show that the pore size and porosity of CA membranes can be readily tuned via a facile compression and annealing process, and the effect of pore features on the output voltages can thus be investigated systematically. We find that, at a relatively high porosity, the electricity-generation performance can be further enhanced by constructing a smaller pore to form more nanochannels. Porous CA membranes, with an optimized porosity of 52.6% and a pore diameter less than 250 nm, are prepared to construct moist-induced electricity generators, which can be applied as breath sensors and can power up calculator operation. The current study provides insights for the construction of porous materials with different pore characteristics for moist-induced electricity generation, especially in the exploration of more efficient and low-cost porous materials for large-scale practical application of the portable power supply.

High-Temperature Enhancing Triboelectric Nanogenerator Based on Antioxidant Liquid Crystalline Polyarylate

Ting Zhao,Jiao Gao,Yaxuan Zheng,Jiaxin Liu,Yufeng Ni,Wei Zhao,Qingbao Guan,Zhengwei You

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a prospective energy harvesting technology, especially polymer-based TENG has achieved remarkable achievements. However, most polymer-based triboelectric layers suffer serious structural degradation and rapid decrease of charge density at high temperatures, which severely lowers the power supply capacity of TENG and definitely limits their applications in extreme environments. Herein, the antioxidants are introduced into liquid crystalline polyarylate (LCP) to fabricate thermally stable TENG and enhance its thermal oxidation resistance. The peak voltage of the resultant TENG is boosted to 73.6 V at 200 °C, which is 144.1% higher than the value at 25 °C, indicating the remarkably high-temperature enhancing effect on electrical output performance. Meanwhile, the high-temperature enhancing TENG (HTE-TENG) exhibited a peak output electrical power density of 1071.3 mW·m −2 under a 10 9 Ω load. This work provides a sustainable route for reliable energy devices and electronics to serve in potential applications, such as rescue work, personal protection, and extreme environments.

Extremely Stable, Multidirectional, All-in-One Piezoelectric Bending Sensor with Cycle up to Million Level

Chao Yan,Xiangming Li,Xiaopei Wang,Guifang Liu,Zhengjie Yang,Hongmiao Tian,Chunhui Wang,Xiaoliang Chen,Jinyou Shao

Flexible bending sensors are crucial components of flexible/wearable electronics. However, their broad application is restricted by their difficulty in sensing different bending directions and, more importantly, their significant output attenuation after long cycles. Herein, a new design of an All-in-One piezoelectric bending sensor is proposed, in which double-deck, cross-over 3D interdigital microelectrodes (silver nanowires (Ag NWs)) are embedded in a piezoelectric polymer film (poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (P(VDF-TrFE))). The piezoelectric film with the embedded 3D microelectrodes exhibits a high anisotropy coefficient ( η 90 ∘ ${{\eta }_{90^\circ }}$ > 1) based on dual piezoelectric modes ( d 31 and d 33 ), which renders it more sensitive to different bending directions. More importantly, the homogeneous interconnected interface and heterogeneous microinterlocked interface formed inside the sensor significantly enhance its interface mechanical properties, with at least a tensile strength of 51 MPa, a shear strength of 28 MPa, and an interfacial toughness of 300 J m −2 , which are nearly two orders of magnitude greater than those of conventional sandwich architectures. The prepared All-in-One sensor shows an extremely stable piezoelectric output over as many as 16 00 000 bending cycles, which represents a remarkable breakthrough. Furthermore, a single sensor can be used to remotely control the multidirectional motion of a smart car, demonstrating enormous potential in practical applications.

Polarized Water Enabled Vertical Dynamic Diode Generator to Output Direct Current

Xutao Yu,Huikai Zhong,Yanghua Lu,Chang Liu,Yihan Chen,Renyu Yang,Can Wang,Shisheng Lin

Harvesting various mechanical energy from the daily environment has been proposed as a promising way to power electronic devices in the era of Internet of Things. However, most of existing generators are troubled by complex surface structures to achieve higher power output because of the limitations by interfacial effects and unable to achieve direct current (DC) output in the vertical direction. Herein, by introducing the polarized water molecules at the solid contact interface, a vertical structure dynamic diode DC generator is proposed. In the process of polarization and depolarization, water molecules induce, accumulate and rebound charges at the interfaces, and form a voltage output up to 1.7 V based on a solid-liquid-solid structure. Furthermore, through integrating series of water molecular generators, a voltage of 4.5 V can be achieved and effectively power commercial LED. This generator has been proven to harvest mechanical energy in the vertical direction to output DC power and excellent potential for applications in distributed energy supply.

Bacterial cellulose nanofiber triboelectric nanogenerator based on dielectric particles hybridized system

Hua Yu,Yan Shao,Chen Luo,Yan Li,Hong-zhi Ma,Yu-hao Zhang,Bo Yin,Jia-bin Shen,Ming-bo Yang

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) is an emerging method to convert mechanical energy into electricity, however, the complicated methods to improve the output performance greatly limited their potential applications. In this work, a simple and effective method was used to improve bacteria cellulose (BC) based TENG. The BC composite film friction material with a hybridized system of silver nanowires and BaTiO 3 (BTO) particles was prepared by filtration method. One-dimensional silver nanowires particles and tetragonal phase BTO particles played an important role in improving the dielectric constant and surface roughness of the material respectively. With the combination of the enhancement of dielectric constant and the improvement of surface structure of the BC composite film, the short-circuit current of BC/AgNWs/BTO-based TENG was 7.1 μA, the open-circuit voltage was 87 V, and the transfer charge was 35 nC at a frequency of 3 Hz. In addition, when an external resistor was connected, the peak power density can reach 75 μW/cm 2 , and the overall TENG had good output stability. Moreover, the BC/AgNWs/BTO-based TENG can collect mechanical energy through human–machine movement when combined with a portable electronic device. This work demonstrates the great potential of cellulose-based materials in TENG and other electronic applications.

Reduced graphene oxide/TiO2 hybrid synergistically enhanced polyimide nanofibers with high triboelectric output and thermal charge stability

Feilong Shi,Xin Wei,Xiaoqing Wu

The output performance of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) can drop dramatically in high temperature environments because of the thermionic emission effect. To enhance the thermal charge stability and expand the working temperature of TENG, polyimide nanofibers (PINF) were synergistically enhanced by the electron trapping mechanism of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and interfacial polarization of TiO 2 . With the multiple enhancement effect of polyimide/rGO/TiO 2 composite nanofibers (PRTNF) on triboelectric output, PRTNF-TENG generated an open circuit voltage of 228.26 V and a short circuit current of 5.22 μA, which were 3.80 and 3.48 times higher than those of PINF-TENG. The effective output of polymer-based TENG was investigated from 25 − 300 °C. Compared to room temperature, the PRTNF-TENG can maintain 19.45 % (44.39 V) and 18.20 % (0.95 μA) of the voltage and current at 300 °C, respectively, and still drive 50 commercial LEDs. Furthermore, PRTNF-TENGs were applied as self-powered sensors for firefighters to provide real-time motion monitoring and ambient temperature detection. This PRTNF-TENG has broad application prospects for energy harvesting and smart electronic monitor in harsh environments such as fire and space.

Continuous fabrication of triboelectric/piezoelectric hybrid yarns with high output for self-powered wearable sensors

Qian Chen,Yan Yan,Chenchen Ye,Wasim Akram,Li Niu,Zhe Sun,Jian Fang

Yarn-based nanogenerators exhibit potential for use in self-powered wearable sensors. However, their current limitations include intricate manufacturing procedures, low electrical output performance, and a restricted level of reliability. Here, we present a continuous fabrication approach for fabricating triboelectric/piezoelectric hybrid nanogenerators utilizing yarns with integrated exceptional performance. The continuous production process exhibits the attributes of one-step forming, wherein piezoelectric nanofibers and triboelectric silicone rubber covering are simultaneously and effectively attached to a single yarn to create yarn-based hybrid nanogenerators. The hybrid yarn demonstrates exceptional electrical output performance by harnessing the advantages of both piezoelectric and triboelectric effects, resulting in a power density of 26.72 μW/m 2 at 17 MΩ. Demonstrating high sensitivity, stability, and mechanical resilience, yarn-based hybrid nanogenerators are suitable for self-powered wearable sensors, enabling applications in Morse code recognition and gait detection. This innovation in yarn-based nanogenerators broadens their scope, heralding new possibilities in the energy-harvesting device and wearable technology.

Hybrid nanogenerators based on PVDF/6H–SiC composite film with enhanced mechanical energy utilization efficiency

Linlin Zhou,Tao Yang,Kang Wang,Enhui Wang,Laipan Zhu,Kuo-Chih Chou,Hailong Wang,Xinmei Hou

The flexible polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF)/6H–SiC composite films are fabricated to overcome the natural brittleness of hexagonal SiC. Yet the electrical output of the piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) based on the composite film needs to be further improved. Here, PENG and hybrid nanogenerator exploiting both triboelectric and piezoelectric effects (T-PENG) based on PVDF/6H–SiC composite films are assembled. The PENG based on the PVDF/15 wt% 6H–SiC composite film shows the open circuit voltage ( V oc ) of 16.81 V. The T-PENG achieves the bridge rectified voltage of 65.70 and 136.58 V when subjected to the external force of 1.1 and 4.9 N, indicating 3.91 and 7.39 times the output of the PENG under the same force, which is the highest value compared with the reported nanogenerators based on SiC and SiC composites. This work breaks through the limitation of low mechanical energy utilization efficiency of film-based PENG and provides a feasible way to enhance the electrical output of nano power sources.

Dual-electric-polarity augmented cyanoethyl cellulose-based triboelectric nanogenerator with ultra-high triboelectric charge density and enhanced electrical output property at high humidity

Nannan Wang,Weihua Zhang,Zibiao Li,Sheng Wang,Ady Suwardi,Enyi Ye,Bofan Li,Yupeng Liu,Zishuai Wu,Yang Dong,Xian Jun Loh,Daoai Wang

Moisture in environment can severely decrease the output of the solid-solid triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) which usually hinders their further practical applications. To solve this problem, we report a modified cellulose material that achieves enhanced electrical output property at high humidity by acquiring universal dual-electric-polarity augmented property. This material shows enhanced contact electrification performance when contacted with different electrode materials. Results show that the electrical output of the TENG composed of cyanoethyl cellulose (CE-cellulose) with poly tetra fluoroethylene (PTFE) and nylon 11 (PA 11) increased by 4 and 8 times. Moreover, the triboelectric charge density (TECD) of CE-cellulose-PTFE based TENG at 95%RH is 533 μC/m 2 , which is a new record for the electrical output of TENG in high humidity environment. This work opens new avenues to the development of TENGs for energy harvesting and self-powered sensors under the real working conditions, especially in high humidity environments, even in the presence of water droplets.

Abrasion and Fracture Self-Healable Triboelectric Nanogenerator with Ultrahigh Stretchability and Long-Term Durability

Jinxing Jiang,Qingbao Guan,Yina Liu,Xuhui Sun,Zhen Wen

Since triboelectrification results from materials in physical contact, the durability of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) must be improved. However, it still poses challenges to continuously repair surface abrasion even when self-healable materials are introduced. In this study, an ultrastretchable TENG (US-TENG) that simultaneously heal the fracture and abrasion at room temperature is fabricated. By incorporating hydrogen bonds and dynamic metal-ligand coordination into polydimethylsiloxane chains, the synthesized elastomers possess ultrahigh stretchability (10 000%) and remarkable self-healing property (100% efficiency) at room temperature. Working in contact-separation mode, the electrical outputs with 2 × 2 cm 2 area can reach 140 V, 40 nC, 1.5 µA, respectively. Besides, the US-TENG shows a stretchability of 1800% with high electrical outputs. Even if it is stretched to break or scratched to wear out, it can recover its electrical outputs in 20 min and 2 h at room temperature, respectively. Finally, the application of the US-TENG as flexible power sources and self-powered pressure sensors is demonstrated. This designed strategy with ultrahigh stretchability and excellent self-healing properties can meet the wide applications of flexible and wearable electronics for long-term use.
