Electric eels in nature can generate high voltage with hundreds of volts based on the mechanism of gradient-induced ion flux, which provides an excellent prototype to inspire the exploration of more efficient and green energy generation strategies in artificial systems. Here we developed a novel microfluidics-based strategy to efficiently fabricate flexible ionic hydrogel batteries by mimicking ion-concentration gradients in biological organs. Microfluidic networks were designed to simultaneously transport four types of ionic hydrogel solutions into pre-defined well arrays and enable the perfusion of 801 hydrogel precursor wells within 1.53 min. A specifically-designed photomask was used to selectively solidify these precursors into separate hydrogel particles, which were further assembled into a flexible ionic hydrogel battery pack by using negative pressure. The voltage output of the resultant ionic hydrogel battery pack was found to increase linearly with the increase of battery unit number, and a maximum voltage of 73.33 V can be achieved by connecting eight ionic hydrogel battery packs in series. The resultant ionic hydrogel battery exhibited unique capability in stably working in wide temperature ranges (0–90°C) and large deformation conditions, and can be further preserved for a long period after dehydration and instantly recover its original discharge capacity once rehydrated. PEDOT:PSS was introduced to the ionic hydrogel battery for reduced internal resistance, resulting in a 1.5-fold improvement in electrical current output. The presented microfluidics-based and high-efficient fabrication strategy exhibits great promise to translate the biomimetic flexible power-generating systems into a viable soft power source for various electrically-driven applications.

Electric eel is an excellent example to harness ion-concentration gradients for sustainable power generation. However, current strategies to create electric-eel-inspired power sources commonly involve manual stacking of multiple salinity-gradient power source units, resulting in low efficiency, unstable contact, and poor flexibility. Here we propose a consecutive multimaterial printing strategy to efficiently fabricate biomimetic ionic hydrogel power sources with a maximum stretchability of 137%. The consecutively-printed ionic hydrogel power source filaments showed seamless bonding interface and can maintain stable voltage outputs for 1000 stretching cycles at 100% strain. With arrayed multi-channel printhead, power sources with a maximum voltage of 208 V can be automatically printed and assembled in parallel within 30 min. The as-printed flexible power source filaments can be woven into a wristband to power a digital wristwatch. The presented strategy provides a tool to efficiently produce electric-eel-inspired ionic hydrogel power sources with great stretchability for various flexible power source applications.

A new family of energy-storage devices is created by mimicking the electric eel to obtain a high output voltage. These novel energy-storage devices are flexible, stretchable, and weavable fibers, which satisfies the needs of next-generation portable and wearable electronics. The devices are fabricated via a continuous fabrication technology to effectively power electronic watches and light-emitting diodes as two examples.

Shape-adaptive tissue-responsive adhesive patch (STRAP), inspired by the electric-eel’s bioelectric capabilities, is proposed to enhance postsurgical recovery in diabetes. STRAP integrates piezoelectric nanogenerators, photothermal materials, and shape-adaptive fibers to address diabetes-related challenges, including impaired wound healing, infection susceptibility, and regeneration deficits. Its biochemical and photothermal properties promote tissue adhesion through covalent bonding and conformational adaptability, ensuring rapid hemostasis and preventing wound adhesions. STRAP replicates the natural microenvironment for effective regeneration and transforms mechanical energy from acoustic stress into beneficial electrical signals, boosting cellular activity, inhibiting bacterial infection, and accelerating wound repair. Preclinical evaluations across multiple animal models demonstrate STRAP’s capacity to dynamically adapt to individual conditions and evolving environments, resulting in superior hemostatic performance in a pig liver injury model, postoperative adhesion prevention in the intestine and stomach, and wound healing acceleration in diabetic mouse, rat, and rabbit models. This underscores the promise of nature-inspired designs in tackling medical challenges. In summary, by integrating rapid hemostasis, infection control, tissue regeneration, and antiadhesion properties, STRAP provides a comprehensive solution for postoperative wound management and recovery.
