Interfacial reinforcement of core-shell HMX@energetic polymer composites featuring enhanced thermal and safety performance

Binghui Duan,Hongchang Mo,Bojun Tan,Xianming Lu,Bozhou Wang,Ning Liu

The weak interface interaction and solid-solid phase transition have long been a conundrum for 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetraazacyclooctane (HMX)-based polymer-bonded explosives (PBX). A two-step strategy that involves the pretreatment of HMX to endow – OH groups on the surface via polyalcohol bonding agent modification and in situ coating with nitrate ester-containing polymer, was proposed to address the problem. Two types of energetic polyether — glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) and nitrate modified GAP (GNP) were grafted onto HMX crystal based on isocyanate addition reaction bridged through neutral polymeric bonding agent (NPBA) layer. The morphology and structure of the HMX-based composites were characterized in detail and the core-shell structure was validated. The grafted polymers obviously enhanced the adhesion force between HMX crystals and fluoropolymer (F 2314 ) binder. Due to the interfacial reinforcement among the components, the two HMX-based composites exhibited a remarkable increment of phase transition peak temperature by 10.2°C and 19.6°C with no more than 1.5% shell content, respectively. Furthermore, the impact and friction sensitivity of the composites decreased significantly as a result of the barrier produced by the grafted polymers. These findings will enhance the future prospects for the interface design of energetic composites aiming to solve the weak interface and safety concerns.

Fluoro-substituted polyaniline deeply incorporation with inert h-BN for interface improvement in anti-corrosion

Cheng Li,Xiao Wang,Meng Zhang,Yue Sun,Yexiang Cui,Yanji Zhu,Huaiyuan Wang

Inert inorganic anti-corrosion fillers enjoy the advantages of stable performance, but most of them face the problems of poor compatibility and disability. Therefore, strategies about addressing the above problems need to be developed. Herein, based on interface enhancement strategy, one typical inert inorganic filler h-BN was armed with fluoro-substituted polyaniline (PFAN). To this end, diazotization reaction was utilized to introduce aniline group to h-BN, and emulsion polymerization was employed to grow the micro-size copolymer of aniline and 2-fluoroaniline. Benefitting from the above interface enhancement attempt, the compatibility of h-BN with resin was enhanced, which was explained by the chemical armed PFAN participated in the curing process of epoxy. Moreover, the disability of h-BN was also improved owed to this interface armor. Therefore, combining the fully developed barrier properties of h-BN with passivate ability of PFAN, the coating containing a small addition amount (0.9 wt%) of the composite fillers to epoxy coatings significantly improved their long-term corrosion resistance , which was confirmed by the EIS result that its low frequency impedance value was maintained above 10 10 and was about 10 3 times larger than that of pure EP coating after being immersed in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 120 days.

Preparing water-based phosphorylated PEEK sizing agent for CF/PEEK interface enhancement

Hanxiong Lyu,Naiyu Jiang,Jiqiang Hu,Yingze Li,Nan Zhou,Dongxing Zhang

The weak interfacial bonding between fiber and matrix needs to be improved for obtaining good mechanical properties of carbon fiber/polyetheretherketone (CF/PEEK) composites due to the inert nature of both components. Organic sizing is a typical interface improvement method, but it is harmful to both the human and local environment. Here, a two-step process is proposed to modify PEEK for preparing an environmentally friendly water-based sizing agent, involving taking the ketone reduction via NaBH 4 and then an esterification reaction with phosphoric acid . This PEEK derivative has good thermal stability , and its dispersion in water is stable for one month. It improves the interface between CF and PEEK by increasing the wettability and surface roughness of CFs, ultimately enhancing the mechanical properties of composites. The two-step process of fabricating the PEEK derivative may have potentials in the industrial application of the polyaryletherketone family.

PIM-1 membrane incorporated cPIM-1 grafted PP-DETA for high-efficiency CO2/N2 separation

Shuangqi Song,Hong Li,Jingde Li,Yanqin Yang

Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs), developed through the combination of solid fillers with polymer matrices, represent an effective approach addressing the persistent challenge of balancing permeability and selectivity in polymer membrane. Diethylenetriamine-functionalized porous material of PP-DETA, which is synthesized from porous organic polymer of PP via one-step diethylenetriamine grafting, is an ideal material for MMMs production. However, designing and optimizing PP-DETA for high-performance CO 2 separation membranes remains a challenge. Herein, we develop an improved PP-DETA material, designated as PP-DETA-cPIM-1, by covalently attaching a carboxylated polymer of intrinsic microporosity (cPIM-1) network layer onto the PP-DETA surface. Membranes prepared from this PP-DETA-cPIM-1 filler and PIM-1 matrix demonstrate enhanced interfacial adhesion and stronger mechanical properties in comparison to the counterparts with the same loading of PP-DETA. The incorporation of PP-DETA-cPIM-1 into MMMs establishes an enhanced filler/polymer interface that facilitates the selective transport of CO 2 through the filler, while simultaneously improving membrane stability and suppressing physical aging. Specifically, with 5 wt% loading of PP-DETA-cPIM-1 filler, the MMM is able to enhance the CO 2 /N 2 selectivity and CO 2 permeability by 52.3 % and 25.3 %, respectively, exceeding the upper bound established in 2008. Furthermore, PP-DETA-cPIM-1/PIM-1 MMMs display superior anti-aging ability for 180 days of aging.

Water-based PES-NaPSS sizing agent without surfactant for interface enhancement of CF/PEEK composites

Kaixuan Lei,Wenzhen Qin,Shulin Bai,Jianfan Cao,Liang Chen

Improving the weak interfacial bonding of carbon fiber (CF)/polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composites is an extremely urgent need. Addressing this issue, sizing modification on CF surfaces is a conventional and effective method. In this work, polyethersulfone-polystyrene sulfonate sodium (PES-NaPSS) was successfully synthesized by UV illumination. A novel surfactant-free aqueous PES-NaPSS sizing agent was prepared by emulsion/solvent evaporation method to regulate the interface of CF/PEEK composites. From the XPS and SEM results, it can be seen that PES-NaPSS was uniformly coated on the CF surfaces, which introduced the reactive groups on the CF surfaces. The PES-NaPSS sizing agent exhibits good thermal performance and storage stability, meeting the needs for high temperature processing of CF/PEEK composites. Compared with the unsized CF/PEEK composites, the ILSS, flexural strength and modulus of the 0.9 wt% PES-NaPSS modified CF/PEEK composite are improved by 32.8 %, 40.3 % and 37.4 %, respectively. Accordingly, the mechanisms of the interface improvement are physical riveting, chain entanglement, chemical and physical interactions between the PES-NaPSS and PEEK matrix. This green and effective method of interface improvement will supply a prerequisite for the extensive application of CF/PEEK composites.

Electrophoretic deposition for the interfacial enhancement of BF/PPENK composite: GO vs. Ti3C2Tx MXene

Hang Jia,Cheng Liu,Yu Zhang,Yue Qiao,Wenqi Zhao,Xi Chen,Xigao Jian

Electrophoretic deposition (EDP) is a novel and promising technique for surface modification, however, the adsorption of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene or graphene oxide (GO) onto the basalt fiber (BF) surface by EPD and its effects on the mechanical performance of basalt fiber reinforced high-performance thermoplastic (BFRHPTP) composite have yet to be investigated. Here, the mechanical and interfacial properties of the modified BF/PPENK were explored. The influence of the brittle/tough nanostructures in interphase on the mechanical performance of BF reinforced poly(phthalazinone ether nitrile ketone) (BF/PPENK) was elucidated. The results indicated that the thermal reduction of GO contributed even more to enhancing the tensile, flexural, interlaminar shear, and interfacial shear strength of BF/PPENK compared to the heat oxidation of MXene. Particularly, these properties of BF-NH 2 @GO3/PPENK were improved by approximately 84%, 43%, 60%, and 118% in comparison to BF-Desized/PPENK. This work may provide some guidance on the interfacial modification of the BFRHPTP composites.

Preparation of hierarchical carbon nanotube–carbon fiber composites with coordination enhancement

Han Xue,Nuona A,Yinghong Xiao,Jianfei Che

Single-walled carbon nanotubes–carbon fiber (SWNTs@CF) hierarchical fibers were prepared by electrophoretic deposition. To improve the interfacial strength between SWNTs and CF, a hexahapto-metal complex, Cr(CO) 6 , was added to the electrophoretic system to prepare hierarchical fibers (SWNTs-Cr(CO) 6 @CF). Results revealed that SWNTs covered CF surface entirely and formed a hierarchical structure. The morphology could be tailored from scattered nanotubes over forest to network by varying the deposition voltage. The hierarchical fibers were highly compatible with epoxy matrix, which could significantly increase the interfacial adhesion through interlocking epoxy matrix. Tensile properties were studied to investigate the effect of interfacial adhesion on mechanical properties of the reinforced composites. The polymeric composite, reinforced by SWNTs-Cr(CO) 6 @CF, exhibited a remarkably high tensile strength of 519 MPa with the content ratio of 1.5:1 (Cr(CO) 6 :SWNTs). The improvement was up to 193% compared to the desized CF composite and 19% compared to SWNTs@CF composite. Additionally, thermogravimetric analyses demonstrated that the SWNTs-Cr(CO) 6 @CF composite exhibited superior heat stability.

Biphase-Interface Enhanced Sodium Storage and Accelerated Charge Transfer: Flower-Like Anatase/Bronze TiO2/C as an Advanced Anode Material for Na-Ion Batteries

Chenxiao Chu,Jing Yang,Qianqian Zhang,Nana Wang,Feier Niu,Xuena Xu,Jian Yang,Weiliu Fan,Yitai Qian

Flower-like assembly of ultrathin nanosheets composed of anatase and bronze TiO2 embedded in carbon is successfully synthesized by a simple solvothermal reaction, followed with a high-temperature annealing. As an anode material in sodium-ion batteries, this composite exhibits outstanding electrochemical performances. It delivers a reversible capacity of 120 mA h g–1 over 6000 cycles at 10 C. Even at 100 C, there is still a capacity of 104 mA h g–1. Besides carbon matrix and hierarchical structure, abundant interfaces between anatase and bronze greatly enhance the performance by offering additional sites for reversible Na+ storage and improving the charge-transfer kinetics. The interface enhancements are confirmed by discharge/charge profiles, rate performances, electrochemical impedance spectra, and first-principle calculations. These results offer a new pathway to upgrade the performances of anode materials in sodium-ion batteries.

A two-step strategy to graft CNTs onto titanium/CFRP interface for interfacial enhancement

Naiyu Jiang,Yingze Li,Nan Zhou,Hongyan Zhang,Xiaohu Zou,Dongxing Zhang

The primary challenge of fiber metal laminates (FMLs) is the insufficient interfacial adhesion between metal and resin, which impedes the realization of the full potential. To address this issue, a two-step strategy has been proposed: firstly, via the cerium coordination-based approach, followed by grafting carbon nanotubes onto the titanium surface. This modification enhances the interfacial behavior between titanium sheets and polyetheretherketone (PEEK), resulting in increased roughness and wettability on the titanium surface, facilitating tight contact between PEEK and titanium sheets while reducing defects at the interface. Compared to CF/PEEK-sandblasted Ti, the modified CF/PEEK-Ti composites exhibit significantly enhanced interfacial shear strength, equivalent flexural strength, and interlaminate shear strength with an increase of 205.4 % (39.4 MPa), 133.3 % (1434.3 MPa) and 95.2 % (93.7 MPa), respectively. Additionally, the failure mode has shifted from interfacial failure to cohesive failure. The interface enhancement mechanism can be attributed to the synergistic effects of coordination bonding, mechanical interlocking, and multiple interactions. This facile two-step modification method demonstrates the potential to enhance the interfacial properties of CF/PEEK-Ti composites.

Structural evolution of carbon fibers in interfacial reinforced CFRP under cyclic tensile loading

Pengfei Tang,Wentao Huang,Xiaohang Liu,Wanqi Cui,Yongjie Liu,Liwei Wu,Youhong Tang,Hongping Zhang,Qingyuan Wang

The microstructure of carbon fiber—including its crystal structure and defect characteristics—is a critical factor governing its mechanical properties and ensuring the long-term stability of carbon fiber-reinforced composites. However, advancements in carbon fiber–resin matrix interface reinforcement technology have altered the stress distribution in CFRP, leaving the evolution mechanisms of carbon fiber microstructure still largely unexplored. These knowledge gaps pose significant challenges to the development of high-performance carbon fiber-reinforced composites. Therefore, this study explored the evolution of the carbon fiber microstructure in the interface-reinforced CFRP under cyclic tensile loading based on polydopamine coating interface-reinforced CFRP (PDA-CFRP). Mechanical experimental evaluation found that the mechanical properties and fatigue properties of PDA-CFRP were significantly improved due to the polydopamine coating-reinforced interface between carbon fiber and epoxy resin. In addition, after tensile fatigue testing, it can be clearly observed that the defect level in PDA-CFRP is lower than that in CFRP, as well as the reduction of (002) crystal plane spacing. These results suggest that cyclic tensile loading leads to an increase in carbon fiber defects and a decrease in the (002) interplanar spacing in CFRP, and that interface modification can reduce these evolutions by uniformly distributing stress. This study not only reveals theoretical insights into the damage and fracture of carbon fibers in CFRP under cyclic tensile loading but also provides theoretical guidance for the design of high-performance CFRP.

Improvement of mechanical properties of TATB-based polymer bonded explosive by surface confinement and interfacial strengthening

Shengjun Zheng,Chengcheng Zeng,Feiyan Gong,Chunhui Xing,Long Lv,Zhijian Yang,Yajun Luo,Fude Nie

Improvement of mechanical properties of 1, 3, 5-triamino-2, 4, 6-trintrobenzene (TATB) based polymer bonded explosives (PBX) is extremely desirable but still a big challenge. In this study, surface confinement and interfacial strengthening strategies were used to enhance the mechanical properties of TATB-based PBX. Firstly, TATB crystals were coated with a polydopamine (PDA) layer. Subsequently, various amounts (0.3, 0.5 and 0.8 wt%) of neutral polymeric bonding agent (NPBA) were grafted onto the PDA layer using 2,4-toluene diisocyanate as a molecular bridge. The results showed that the modified TATB composites-based PBX exhibited improved mechanical strength, as well as creep resistance properties compared to the raw TATB-based PBX. The modified TATB composites-based PBX with 0.5 wt% NPBA grafting content exhibited the highest mechanical strength and creep resistance due to the surface confinement effect of the rigid crosslinked PDA layer and interfacial strengthening effect of the NPBA layer. Present work might provide a promising strategy for synergistically improving the mechanical properties of TATB-based PBX.

A novel waterborne g-CPP sizing agent for the interfacial enhancement of SCF/PP composites

Zheng Li,Kexin Wang,Xudong Liu,Jiaoli Hu,Jie Zhang,Guorui Yang,Ruihang Xie,Jialiang Zhang,Yuhui Ao

To enhance the interfacial adhesion of short carbon fiber (SCF) reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites, a new modified chlorinated polypropylene resin (g-CPP) was synthesized and utilized to manufacture the sizing agent for SCF. The findings of thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry showed that g-CPP had high thermal characteristics, with its glass transition temperature (Tg) raised by 11°C.The g-CPP sizing agent that has been developed has increased storage stability (particle size was 109.8 nm). The contact angle of SCF was reduced from 81.52° to 60.04° after sizing, and the surface free energy was raised from 29.31 mN/m soared to 47.13 mN/m. The SCF/PP composites with 1 wt% sizing agent demonstrated the best interfacial adhesion, with improvements in flexural and tensile strengths of 54% and 39%, respectively. The interfacial reinforcement mechanism of sizing agent to improve interfacial adhesion was investigated. This work proposes an attractive way for the future preparation of high-performance SCF/PP composites.
