Study on the interface toughening of particle/fibre reinforced epoxy composites with molecularly designed core–shell particles and various interface 3D models

Naveen Thirunavukkarasu,Harini Bhuvaneswari Gunasekaran,Shuqiang Peng,Abdelatif Laroui,Lixin Wu,Zixiang Weng

Poor interface toughening reduces the utilisation of particle/fibre-reinforced thermoset polymer composites in many engineering applications. Numerous studies have been performed on polymer and fibre component modifications, yet utilising fillers in epoxy is a promising way to improve interface toughness. Here, a molecularly designed core–shell particle (CSP) is introduced into the epoxy polymer to generate a strong interface through an epoxy coupling agent acrylate shell and styrene-butadiene rubber core. The nanocomposite material, in particular, has an excellent tensile strength of 166% and exceptional elongation of 245%; these properties further improve the interlaminar shear strength of 225% in carbon fibre-reinforced polymer composite. Moreover, CSP gives better shear effects and stress transferability to the fibre–matrix interface region. It was clarified systematically by developing a 3D micro- and macro-mechanical model from field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and surface fracture analysis. Meanwhile, results suggest that effective toughness is achieved by well-dispersed and void growth, filler-epoxy interaction and strong matrix-fibre interfaces. With these features, this study emphasises a way to analyse composite structures and fibre laminates which can help engineering design strategies for various applications.

Comparative study of chemically grafted vs. physically coated CNTs on fracture toughness of BMI/CF laminates

Anran Fu,Yunfu Ou,Juan Li,Yunxiao Zhang,Dongliang Shen,Zhen Wang,Zhengyan Chen,Dongsheng Mao

This study investigates the interlaminar toughening of bismaleimide/carbon fiber (BMI/CF) composite laminates using modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) deposited via spray coating technology. Pristine CNTs were functionalized through chemical modification (grafting 5-aminoisophthalic acid small molecules to yield CNT-COOH) and physical modification (coating with a layer of polydopamine to produce CNT@PDA) to enhance dispersion within the composite matrix. While both modification methods improved the dispersion of CNTs, their thermal stabilities during composite molding led to contrasting toughening outcomes. Chemically grafted CNT-COOH demonstrated superior performance, achieving a 20 % increase in mode I fracture toughness (G IC ) and a 32.37 % increase in mode II fracture toughness (G IIC ). In contrast, physically coated CNT@PDA exhibited reduced toughening efficacy compared to the baseline in both mode I and mode II fracture toughness. This can be attributed to the poorer thermal stability of the physically coated CNT@PDA than that of chemically grafted CNT-COOH. On one hand, the coating material PDA itself has poor thermal stability which is highly prone to decomposition during high-temperature molding. On the other hand, it can be influenced by the methods of CNT modification. The bonding mechanisms of chemical grafting (covalent bonds) and physical coating (van der Waals forces and other physical interactions) differ, leading to varying stability under high temperatures. The decomposition of the coating material and the high-temperature failure of van der Waals forces diminished surface functional groups and introduced defects around the CNTs, significantly compromising interlaminar fracture toughness. The findings underscore the critical role of thermal stability in determining the effectiveness of nanomodification strategies for advanced composite materials.

Improved interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fiber/epoxy composites by a combination of extrinsic and intrinsic multiscale toughening mechanisms

Qihui Chen,Fei Wu,Zhiyuan Jiang,Hao Zhang,Jianyang Yuan,Yang Xiang,Yaqing Liu

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites with hierarchical structure interleave composed of nanoscale core-shell rubber (CSR) and microscale short carbon fiber (SCF) were fabricated. The hierarchical structure interleave exhibits superior interlaminar toughening efficiency than either CSR or SCF alone. Triggering intrinsic and extrinsic toughening mechanisms at different scales by CSR and SCF, respectively, the mode-I critical energy release rate ( G IC ) and mode-II critical energy release rate ( G IIC ) of multi-phase interleaved CFRP composite are 127% and 154% higher than those of unmodified sample. While the tensile properties and glass transition temperature ( T g ) are not compromised. The fracture toughness of epoxy/CSR system was also investigated to better understand the effect of matrix toughness on interlayer toughness of CFRP. Numerical analysis and fracture surface observations revealed the synergistic toughening mechanisms in SCF/CSR interleaved CFRP composites. The synergy between nanoscale intrinsic toughening mechanism and microscale extrinsic toughening mechanism, evolving with crack propagation , contributes to a greater energy absorption. The usefulness of the present study for preparation of high-performance CFRP is discussed.

An interfacial toughening strategy for high stability 2D/3D perovskite X-ray detectors with a carbon nanotube thin film electrode

Liwen Qiu,Mingqiang Wang,Tian Sun,Qiang Lou,Tong Chen,Guoshen Yang,Wei Qian,Zixuan Zhang,Shihe Yang,Min Zhang,Yufeng Jin,Hang Zhou

Single-crystalline metal halide perovskite materials hold great promise for developing next-generation low-dose X-ray detection. To bring this new technology into reality, it is important to improve the durability of perovksite detectors by suppressing the well-known corrosion and ion diffusion problems at the perovskite/electrode interface. For imaging application, it is also imperative to develop new assembling approaches to realise non-planar interconnection between thick perovskite crystals and thin-film transistor (TFT) backplanes. Herein, a flexible and mechanically robust carbon nanotube (CNT) film was proposed to replace noble metal electrodes. The proposed CNT film, whose binder contains a carboxyl group, can form solid contact with a phenethylamine-based two-dimensional (2D) perovskite via amide coupling, thus toughening the perovskite–electrode interface. The resulting CNT/2D–3D perovskite detector shows an applaudable low dark current, high sensitivity, a low dose detection limit and excellent stability, retaining 98% of its initial sensitivity after storage for three months. Moreover, the flexible CNT films are also beneficial for making non-planar interconnection between thick perovskite crystals and TFT backplanes. The proposed flexible CNT thin film electrode thus provides a facile route towards realising a low-dose, high-resolution and highly stable perovskite X-ray detector.

Ductile Ni3B interphase with oxidation-induced crack healing capability for carbon fiber toughened ultra-high temperature ceramics

Xia Zhang,Mingyu Yao,Xiaoyi Jiang,Wenlong Li,Feilong Huang,Hongliang Xu,Hailong Wang,Hongxia Lu,Cheng Fang

Ductile interphases serve as mechanical fuses to deflect matrix cracks in carbon fiber reinforced ultra-high temperature ceramic composites (C f /UHTCs). This work introduces Ni 3 B, a ductile ceramic with intrinsically low shear modulus (79 GPa) and high bulk modulus (236 GPa, G/B = 0.33), as the interphase in C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composites. A hydrothermal carbon/Ni 3 B hierarchical architecture was further engineered to resolve thermal expansion mismatch between Ni 3 B coating and carbon fibers. The optimized interface enhances fracture toughness and flexural strength by 65 % and 47 %, compared to the unmodified composites. In addition, Ni 3 B derived low-density oxides could generate volume expansion under oxidative conditions, sealing interfacial microcracks and elevating critical thermal shock temperature difference from 428 ℃ to 824 ℃. By uniquely coupling interface toughening with self-healing functionality, Ni 3 B is predicted to be a promising interphase material for future C f /UHTC composites.

Preparation of specialized plastering mortar for foam concrete using low silica iron tailings

Xue Lutao,Li Yubiao,Li Rui,Yu Wenqiang

The mismatch in physical properties between traditional mortar and the porous substrate of foam concrete (FC) leads to poor adhesion and cracking, limiting the wider application of FC. In order to address this issue and alleviate the storage pressure of low silica iron tailings (LSIT), this study developed an advanced plastering mortar system for foam concrete blocks through systematic optimization of LSIT. A comprehensive evaluation was conducted on six critical parameters, including the water-cement ratio, the aggregate ratio of LSIT to sand, the content of cement, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), re-dispersible latex powder (RDP), and polypropylene fiber (PPF), establishing their quantitative impacts on mortar performance. The optimal performance was achieved with a water-cement ratio of 0.84, aggregate ratio of 11:3, cement content of 30%, HPMC content of 0.4%, RDP content of 1.5%, and PPF content of 0.15%, yielding a mortar density of 1447.9 kg/m 3 , 28 d compressive strength of 8.21 MPa, and 104 mm consistency, parameters fully compliant with the M8 grade specifications in JC/T 890-2017. Advanced microstructural characterization (XRD, SEM, and hydration heat analysis) demonstrated that LSIT particles refined the granulometric distribution through microaggregate effects. In addition, C 3 S dissociation was retarded by HPMC through Ca 2+ chelation, extending the induction period of hydration. Moreover, the RDP facilitated interfacial cross-linking via transesterification, forming the core–shell structures of C–S–H and polymer, compared with the control sample, the portlandite content was slightly reduced. Furthermore, the PPF reinforcement is achieved through crack-deflection and bridging mechanisms. The modification system of multi-component materials therefore exhibits a three-fold synergistic action, including the gradation optimization of particles, the regulation of hydration kinetics, and the toughening of the interfacial. These findings establish a viable pathway for high-value utilization of iron tailings in construction materials and simultaneously elucidate the physicochemical mechanisms underlying the interactions of composite modifiers in cementitious systems. Furthermore, the modified additive system serves as a viable template for valorizing diverse solid wastes. Graphical abstract
