Lithium-metal batteries are promising candidates for the next-generation energy storage devices. However, notorious dendrite growth and an unstable interface between Li and electrolytes severely hamper the practical implantation of Li-metal anodes. Here, a robust solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer with flexible organic components on the top and plentiful LiF together with lithiophilic Zn nanoparticles on the bottom is constructed on Li metal based on the spray quenching method. The fluorinated interface layer exhibits remarkable stability to shield Li from the aggressive electrolyte and restrain dendrite growth. Accordingly, the modified Li electrode delivers a stable cycling for over 400 cycles at 3 mA cm–2 in symmetric cells. An improved capacity retention is also achieved in a full cell with a LiFePO4 cathode. This novel design of the artificial SEI layer offers rational guidance for the further development of high-energy-density lithium-metal batteries.

The main purpose of this study is challenging to dramatically improve the toughness of poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/starch by adding poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) into the composites and grafting PEG molecules onto the surface of starch particles. It was found that the surface grafting of PEG onto starch induced the presence of PEG-rich regions located around the starch particles, caused by migration and aggregation of free PEG molecules. A novel interphase transition layer between PLA and starch was formed, which showed great ability for cavitation and vested large-scaled plastic deformation to PLA matrix. Further mechanical properties tests indicated the formation of interphase layer significantly increase the elongation at break from 10.2 to 254.5%, and notched impact strength from 1.56 to 2.37 kJ/m 2 for PLA/PEG/starch ternary composites. The influence of PEG component, ethanol extraction and annealing was also investigated.

The long-standing issue of lithium dendrite growth during repeated deposition or dissolution processes hinders the practical use of lithium-metal anodes for high-energy density batteries. Here, we demonstrate a promising lithiophilic–lithiophobic gradient interfacial layer strategy in which the bottom lithiophilic zinc oxide/carbon nanotube sublayer tightly anchors the whole layer onto the lithium foil, facilitating the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interphase, and prevents the formation of an intermediate mossy lithium corrosion layer. Together with the top lithiophobic carbon nanotube sublayer, this gradient interfacial layer can effectively suppress dendrite growth and ensure ultralong-term stable lithium stripping/plating. This strategy is further demonstrated to provide substantially improved cycle performance in copper current collector, 10 cm 2 pouch cell and lithium–sulfur batteries, which, coupled with a simple fabrication process and wide applicability in various materials for lithium-metal protection, makes the lithiophilic–lithiophobic gradient interfacial layer a favored strategy for next-generation lithium-metal batteries.

The main key component in bipolar membranes (BPMs) is the interfacial layer (IL), which is responsible for the water splitting. In this work, a most studied MXene Ti 3 C 2 T x and a modified Ti 3 C 2 T x (PANI-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) were investigated as the catalysts in ILs of BPMs. BPMs with Ti 3 C 2 T x /PANI-Ti 3 C 2 T x were prepared through the layer-by-layer casting/spraying method. The resulting BPMs were assessed through morphologies, thermal stability, alkali resistance performance, current-voltage (I-V) curves and water splitting performance in the bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED). Results show that the as-prepared BPMs exhibited excellent adhesion between layers, good thermal stability and alkali resistance performance. I-V curves showed that the voltage of the BPM with the PANI-Ti 3 C 2 T x addition content of 0.5% (BPM-PANI-Ti 3 C 2 T x -0.5%, ~7.0 V) at the current density of 80 mA·cm -2 was only half of that of the blank sample BPM-0 without any catalysts (~14.1 V). After the BMED operation, the final OH - concentration increment in the base chamber (∆ C OH ) and the energy consumption of the BPM-Ti 3 C 2 T x -1.0% membrane (0.089 mol·L -1 , 0.58 kWh·mol -1 ) were ~7% higher and ~29% lower than those of BPM-0 (0.083 mol·L -1 , 0.82 kWh·mol -1 ), respectively; BPM-Ti 3 C 2 T x -1.0% (0.089 mol·L -1 , 95%) showed a higher final ∆ C OH and current efficiency than the commercial membrane BP-1 (0.087 mol·L -1 , 93%), but a higher energy consumption (0.58 kWh·mol -1 ) than BP-1 (0.33 kWh·mol -1 ). This study suggests that MXenes have the advanced catalytic effect on water splitting occurs in ILs of BPMs.

Significant advancements in research have been made in recent years, with single-junction organic solar cells achieving efficiencies exceeding 20%. However, scaling up laboratory prototypes to large-area commercial modules remains challenging due to the absence of high-quality thin-film deposition techniques, particularly for ultra-thin interfacial layers. In here, we demonstrate a fully vacuum-processed approach utilizing InCl3 as hole-contact and C60/BCP as electron-contact interlayers, respectively, which guarantees dense and uniform charge transporting layers, while also ensuring consistent batch-to-batch reproducibility of module performance. In addition, such ultra-thin InCl3 layer significantly reduces the surface free energy of ITO substrates, thereby inhibiting the coffee ring effect during the active layer deposition, and obtaining a more homogeneous film in a large-scale size. As a result, we measured a power conversion efficiency of 16.5% (certified efficiency: 15.8%) under 1-sun illumination for the best-performing organic solar modules (aperture area = 15.6 cm2) with a geometric fill factor of 95.5%, making them highly completive amongst recently reported modules at similar size. Most importantly, our vacuum-processed interlayers exhibit excellent reproducibility and scale-up ability, paving a way to accelerate the industrialization of organic photovoltaic technology.

Lithium-iodine (Li-I2) batteries are promising candidates for next-generation electrochemical energy storage systems due to their high energy density and the excellent kinetic rates of I2 cathodes. However, dissolution of iodine and iodide has hindered their widespread adoption for practical applications. Herein, a Ti3C2Tx MXene foam with a three-dimensional hierarchical porous architecture is proposed as a cathode-electrolyte interface layer in Li-I2 batteries, enabling high-rate and ultrastable cycling performance at a high iodine content and loading mass. Theoretical calculations and empirical characterizations indicate that Ti3C2Tx MXene sheets with high metallic conductivity not only provide strong chemical binding with iodine species to suppress the shuttle effect but also facilitate fast redox reactions during cell cycling. As a result, the Li-I2 battery using a cathode with 70 wt % I2 cycled stably for over 1000 cycles at a rate of 2 C, even at an ultrahigh loading mass of 5.2 mg cm–2. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the highest reported loading at such a high iodine content. This work suggests that using a Ti3C2Tx MXene interface layer can enable the design and application of high-energy Li-I2 batteries.

The application of polyimide (PI) as an effective sizing agent for carbon fiber (CF) in CF/poly ether ether ketone (PEEK) composites represents a promising approach. Here, a series of novel carboxylated waterborne PI sizing agents with different aliphatic ratios were designed to construct a rigid-flexible gradient interphase for the purpose of promoting interfacial adhesion between CF and PEEK. It was observed that the mechanical properties of the composites were optimal when the molar ratio of rigid diamine monomer to flexible diamine monomer reached 7:3. Significant augmentation was observed in various mechanical and interfacial properties, including tensile modulus (25.6 %), tensile strength (19.8 %), flexural modulus (28.5 %), flexural strength (15.8 %), impact strength (24.3 %), and IFSS (57.8 %). Furthermore, the tensile strength of the composites exhibited a greater increase (27.2 %) at elevated temperatures, thus indicating that the role of the interfacial layer was more pronounced at high temperatures. The interphase was analyzed by peak force quantitative nanomechanical imaging (PF-QNM) mode of atomic force microscopy (AFM), the results indicated the formation of a modulus transition zone between the CF and PEEK. This zone exhibited a gradient change of modulus, enabling the composite to transfer and distribute applied loads more effectively when subjected to external forces. Consequently, the findings of this study demonstrated the potential of waterborne PI sizing agents for application on CF, offering a promising avenue for surface modification of high-performance CF/PEEK composites.

Rechargeable alkali metal–CO2 batteries, which combine high theoretical energy density and environmentally friendly CO2 fixation ability, have attracted worldwide attention. Unfortunately, their electrochemical performances are usually inferior for practical applications. Aiming to reveal the underlying causes, a combinatorial usage of advanced nondestructive and postmortem characterization tools is used to intensively study the failure mechanisms of Li/Na–CO2 batteries. It is found that a porous interphase layer is formed between the separator and the Li/Na anode during the overvoltage rising and battery performance decaying process. A series of control experiments are designed to identify the underlying mechanisms dictating the observed morphological evolution of Li/Na anodes, and it is found that the CO2 synergist facilitates Li/Na chemical corrosion, the process of which is further promoted by the unwanted galvanic corrosion and the electrochemical cycling conditions. A detailed compositional analysis reveals that the as-formed interphase layers under different conditions are similar in species, with the main differences being their inconsistent quantity. Theoretical calculation results not only suggest an inherent intermolecular affinity between the CO2 and the electrolyte solvent but also provide the most thermodynamically favored CO2 reaction pathways. Based on these results, important implications for the further development of rechargeable alkali metal–CO2 batteries are discussed. The current discoveries not only fundamentally enrich our knowledge of the failure mechanisms of rechargeable alkali metal–CO2 batteries but also provide mechanistic directions for protecting metal anodes to build high-reversible alkali metal–CO2 batteries.

A novel electrolyte additive designed as a cathode interface formation enhancer for high voltage lithium-ion battery (LIB) systems is investigated. Lithium 4-benzonitrile trimethyl borate (LBTB) is synthesized by a two-step reaction, and the results show that the cycling performance of Li/LiCoO 2 cell at 4.4 V is significantly improved from 15.08% to 73.21% by adding 2.0 wt% of LBTB to the electrolyte (1.0 M LiPF 6 in EC/DEC/EMC = 3/2/5, wt.%). A combination of electrochemical methods , ex-situ spectroscopy characterization techniques and computational calculations are employed to investigate the mechanisms of action for this additive. Cyclic voltammograms indicate the additive is preferably oxidized on the LiCoO 2 surface prior to the electrolyte oxidation and results in a more stable and robust passivation layer than the electrolyte alone. Computational calculations support the observed sacrificial oxidation of LBTB prior to the electrolyte solvents decomposition. The CEI formed by LBTB decomposition mitigates the dissolution of transition metal and subsequently improves the cycling stability of the LiCoO 2 cathodes at high voltages. Surface characterization techniques reveal the presence of -B-O- products derived from LBTB decomposition on the surface of the LCO cathode.

The accelerated formation of lithium dendrites has considerably impeded the advancement and practical deployment of all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs). In this study, a soft carbon (SC)–Li3N interface layer was developed with both ionic and electronic conductivity, for which the in situ lithiation reaction not only lithiated SC into LiC6 with good electronic/ionic conductivity but also successfully transformed the mixed-phase Li3N into pure-phase β-Li3N with a high ionic conductivity/ion diffusion coefficient and stability to lithium metal. The mixed conductive interface layer facilitates fast Li+ transport at the interface and induces the homogeneous deposition of lithium metal inside it. This effectively inhibits the formation of lithium dendrites and greatly improves the performance of the ASSLMB. The ASSLMB assembled with the SC–Li3N interface layer exhibits high areal capacity (15 mA h cm–2), high current density (7.5 mA cm–2), and long cycle life (6000 cycles). These results indicate that this interface layer has great potential for practical applications in high-energy-density ASSLMBs.

Electrolyte formulation for Li-ion batteries is never a trivial task because trade-offs usually exist among the different design considerations: ion transport efficiency in the bulk, the properties (stability, ion transfer kinetics) of its interface with the electrode materials, compatible temperature range, etc. The combinative strategy, wherein some constituents’ advantages complement the others’ deficiencies, proves to be a rapid and often effective approach to address the above dilemma. However, for certain successful combinations, the synergy might not be that obvious to clarify. We herein study a novel electrolyte system constituted by LiNO3 as the sole salt, dissolved in an uncommon selection of two solvents regarded as incompatible with the graphite anode, i.e., diethylene glycol dimethyl ether and propylene carbonate. Unexpectedly, this electrolyte is free of signs of solvent cointercalation into the graphite electrode that has plagued both solvents for decades and works even more reversibly than the superconcentrated LiNO3 electrolyte. Solvation structure evaluation of the Li+ ions and the analysis of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer’s composition have been conducted to understand the mechanisms underpinning the reversibility of the graphite electrode, in which the modification of SEI arguably has a greater impact than the change of desolvation kinetics. The SEI’s stability is demonstrated to be endowed by a marriage of inorganic and organic moieties, contributed by the respective decomposition of LiNO3 and propylene carbonate. The organic character of the SEI layer thus might not be entirely dispensable when designing a new electrolyte.

Interfacial engineering offers a promising solution to zinc anode instability, yet most studies focus solely on suppressing side reactions with water, overlooking the critical role of fast zinc ion kinetics. This work investigates the Cr 2 O 3- x artificial interface layer, demonstrating its dual benefits of electrostatic shielding and enhanced Zn 2+ transport kinetics. The Cr 2 O 3- x layer exhibits excellent mechanical stability and hydrophilicity, with its negatively charged surface effectively repelling anions like SO 4 2− and OH − to suppress side reactions. Moreover, the highly active Cr 2 O 3- x layer accelerates Zn 2+ migration, reduces nucleation energy barriers, and promotes uniform zinc deposition by facilitating Zn 2+ detachment from solvated structures. As a result, the Cr 2 O 3- x @Zn anode achieves exceptional cycling stability and remarkable reversibility, with symmetric batteries enduring over 1,800 h at 5 mA cm −2 . When paired with NH 4 V 4 O 10 , it also demonstrates long cycle life and superior rate performance. This work sheds new light on the development of stable, high-performance zinc anodes.
