Zirconia matrix composites with well-dispersed and highly-oriented two-dimensional graphene arrays were fabricated successfully using tape casting. This significantly improved the fracture toughness ( K IC ) of zirconia, i.e., an improvement of 64.1 % in K IC , from 4.3 MPa m 0.5 to 7.21 MPa m 0.5 . The interface strengthened by Zr, O and C bonding between zirconia and graphene plays a crucial role in improving the toughness of zirconia. The catastrophic fracture failure mode is transformed into the stable crack propagation behavior with well-oriented graphene arrays. The interface stress transfer behavior analyzed by the shear-lag theory reveals that the graphene layers have little effect on the maximum axial stress and shear stress at graphene/zirconia interface, but the stress distribution are changed. Due to the weak bonding between inner graphene layer, the energy dissipation by graphene pulling-out decreases with increased graphene layers.

The strength enhancement is critical for the application exploration of Mo-based materials. In this work, a secondary phase of WC is introduced into the Mo matrix, and the corresponding phase, microstructure and mechanical properties have been studied. It is found that the addition of WC particles can significantly improve the mechanical properties, leading to a high ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 591.5 MPa and a hardness of 242.7 HV over the sintered Mo–12%WC composite, which are about 21.2% and 49.5% higher than those of pure Mo, respectively. During the sintering, the additive WC particles react with the Mo matrix to in-situ generate W and Mo 2 C, and the former is dissolved into the Mo matrix to exhibit solid solution strengthening. Besides, the latter hinders the migration of grain boundaries (GBs) to limit the grain growth of Mo, resulting in smaller grain size. More importantly, the Mo 2 C ( 1 ‾ 2 ‾ 1 ) can gain coherent interfaces with Mo ( 1 1 ‾ 0) to intensify the phase boundary. This work paves a way for the design of high-performance composites through the in-situ reinforcement of decomposable additives.

Carbon nanofibre (CNF) is a potential reinforcement in Zn implants. Nevertheless, its poor interfacial compatibility reduces the reinforcement efficiency drastically. In this study, rare earth lanthanum (La) was used as a compatible interface layer between CNF and Zn matrix. On the one hand, La in situ grew on acidified CNF by a chemical synthesis and achieved a firm coordination covalent bond with the oxygenated functional group derived from CNF. On the other hand, La, as an active rare earth element, could carry out the alloying reaction with the Zn matrix, thus forming strong metal bonding. Results showed that the tensile strength of composites was enhanced from 180.2 ± 12.1 to 243.4 ± 10.2 MPa since the La interface layer promoted the transfer of the interfacial shear stress from the Zn matrix to CNF and thereby consumed massive fracture energy. Encouragingly, it simultaneously improved the ductility, as La activated basal slip and improved the dislocation accommodation capacity. Moreover, the Zn implants displayed excellent anti-tumour efficiency.

Nowadays, Zinc (Zn)-based biocomposites as biodegradable implant materials have been recognized as a promising approach to overcome the insufficient mechanical performance of Zn matrix and to endow the Zn-based materials with biofunctionality. However, the strengthening effect on Zn-based matrix composite remains far from expectation mainly due to the poor interfacial bonding between the reinforcement and Zn matrix, and the relatively coarse grain size of the Zn matrix. Herein, we have developed a novel in situ wetting strategy to ameliorate the interfacial bonding and mechanical performance of Zn-Ag-based composites using cuprous oxide-modified graphene oxide (Cu 2 O-GO) sheets as reinforcement. The enhanced interfacial bonding between GO sheets and Zn matrix owing to the in situ generated ZnO interlayer and the ultrafine microstructure with an average grain size of 360 nm were simultaneously achieved in the hot extruded (HEed) 1 wt%Cu 2 O-GO/Zn-2 wt%Ag biocomposites. Consequently, HEed biocomposites possessed excellent tensile properties, including ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 344.0 ± 2.4 MPa, yield stress (YS) of 314.0 ± 4.8 MPa, and elongation at failure of 15.5% ± 1.3%. Ultrafine and uniform microstructure of the HEed biocomposites resulted in a relatively uniform corrosion morphology and a degradation rate of 0.195 ± 0.004 mm y −1 in simulated body fluid (SBF) solution. The 2-fold diluted extract of the HEed biocomposites exhibited satisfying cytocompatibility with MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblast comparable to that of Ti-6Al-4 V ELI alloys. More importantly, the synergistic effect of metallic ions, Ag-rich nanoparticles, and GO sheets contributed to the remarkable antibacterial activity of the experimental biocomposites against both S. aureus and E. coli. These results demonstrated that the 1Cu 2 O-GO/Zn-2Ag biocomposites should be anticipated as a promising biodegradable material for orthopedic applications.

The aramid fiber reinforced polyurethane composites (AF@PU), which exhibit high strength and lightweight characteristics, have attracted widespread concerns for advanced personal protective systems. However, the interface is essential to influence the stress transfer efficiency but frequently overlooked. In this work, polydopamine and γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane modified SiO2 (m-SiO2) were utilized to strengthen the interface. Attributing to the strong bonding strength between fibers and polymer resins improved by m-SiO2 at the interface, the tensile, flexural, and compressive strength of m-SiO2/AF@PU are maximally increased. The deposition of abundant m-SiO2 enhances the interface roughness, the interfacial peeling strength of the m-SiO2/AF@PU is increased by 490.4%, and the interlaminar shear strength is increased by 51.1%. In addition, m-SiO2/AF@PU demonstrates the maximal energy absorption value; the ballistic limit velocity is improved from 449.8 m s−1 of AF@PU to 508.5 m s−1 of m-SiO2/AF@PU. This work highlights the interface strengthening and ballistic performance, thus providing an efficient guideline for the design of next-generation fiber reinforced polymer resin composites.

Bioinspired interfacial structures in materials, such as nacre-inspired masonry structures and bionic mechanical interlocking structures, can produce unique effects that enable unprecedented material mechanical properties. However, the smooth interface in ceramic materials is known to elicit weakening effects on mechanical properties, easily causing catastrophic damage in industrial production. Here, inspired by the suture structure of fish, zirconia-toughed alumina (ZTA) is fabricated with a bioinspired suture structure interface by introducing a graphene nanosheet (GNS) through tailoring the interfacial atomic diffusive rate on a ZTA composite, and its effect on fracture strength is measured. The results show that the flexural strength of ZTA modified by 0.14% GNS is 865.4 MPa, which is 60.2% higher than that of ZTA without GNS modification. Subsequently, the local grain boundary slip resistance on the suture interface is calculated using finite element simulation, which reveals that the suture interface of the Al2O3 matrix had higher resistance values than the smooth interface under applied load, which could improve the hardness, flexural strength, and fracture toughness. This unique suture interface intensifies the interface strength and essentially improves the force transmission. This work provides guidance for bionic optimization of the grain boundary structure of structural ceramics and a new idea for the structural design of high-strength and -toughness ceramics.

In the aerospace and fire protection sectors, silicone rubber composites exhibit large deformability and outstanding thermal protection performance. However, the interface between silicone rubber and carbon fiber is easily destroyed under external tensile deformation, thereby leading to the formation of cracks that deteriorate thermal insulation and ablative performance. This study introduces an interfacial strengthening strategy that deposits a silica layer onto carbon fibers via polydopamine-assisted modification and modifies the silicone rubber matrix with epoxy resin, achieving an 11.86-fold enhancement in terms of interfacial shearing strength. The optimized interface between short-cut carbon fiber and vinyl silicone rubber matrix significantly reduces the mass ablative rate by 13% and lowers the back-face temperature by 54.7 °C during oxyacetylene ablation tests under 10% tensile strain. This work provides a strategy to simultaneously improve the ablative and mechanical properties of flexible thermal protection materials that have promising applications in industrial sectors.

The inherent metallurgical incompatibility between dissimilar metals such as tungsten (W) and copper (Cu) engenders weak chemical bonding, substantially constraining the attainment of high strength. This constitutes a critical limitation for nuclear fusion applications demanding robust interfacial integrity. To address these limitations, this study introduces a dual interface reinforcement strategy employing a CrCoNi medium entropy alloy (MEA) interlayer and achieving diffusion bonding of oxide diffusion-strengthened tungsten (ODS-W) and Cu through spark plasma sintering (SPS) technology. At the optimized bonding temperature of 1000 °C, the joint achieves a maximum tensile strength of 256.7 ± 8.2 MPa, corresponding to a 171 % enhancement over direct bonding (DB) joint (94.6 ± 5.1 MPa), accompanied by a fracture mode transition from brittle to ductile failure. Multi-scaled microstructure and interface element diffusion behavior analyses reveal that reactive diffusion at the W/MEA interface facilitates the formation of a solution-strengthened matrix associated with an amorphous diffusion layer. Whereas mutual diffusion at the Cu/MEA interface induces multiple phase structures, resulting concurrently in solid solution strengthening and precipitation strengthening, thereby reinforcing the interface bonding. This dual interface reinforcement methodology establishes an effective design strategy for enhancing mechanical properties in immiscible metal systems.
