The state-of-art approach to realize the low rolling resistance of green tires is the high addition of SiO 2 . However, its dispersion capacity and the interface strength with rubber dominant the final properties of green tires. Here, we systematically study amphiphilic polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate, oleylamine, sorbitan monooleate, and oleamide to modify SiO 2 through simple hydrogen-bonded self-assembly in order to replace the traditional silane coupling agent with low modification efficiency, many side reactions and complex reaction process. The results show that the rolling resistance and processing energy loss of the rubber composite prepared by SiO 2 modified with polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate and oleylamine are significantly reduced, and other physical and mechanical properties (tensile strength, tear strength, and wear resistance) are also significantly improved compared with the silane coupling agent commonly used in green tire tread. Meanwhile, carbon–carbon double bonds belonging to polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate and oleylamine can participate in vulcanization of rubber to strongly improve the dispersion ability of SiO 2 and the interface interaction between SiO 2 and rubber matrix, so as to develop the fuel-efficient green tire tread with high performance and low rolling resistance.

To improve the weak fiber-matrix interface of carbon fiber composites, two-dimensional transition metal carbides or nitrides of MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) nanosheets were introduced onto the surfaces of carbon fiber (CF) through electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technology for the first time. The MXene deposited CF was further infiltrated with epoxy resin by vacuum-assisted resin infusion (VARI) to fabricate CFRP composites. Results indicated that the MXene nanoparticles deposited on the surfaces of CF could significantly enhance fiber surface energy and wettability as well as surface roughness, which in turn remarkably increased the interfacial strength and flexural properties of fiber-resin. The MXene/oxidised CF/epoxy composites showed a 53% improvement in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), a 22.2% enhancement in flexuous strength, and a 29.2% increment in monofilament tensile strength than non-functionalised specimens. This simple and effective strategy provided a promising approach for effective CFRP modification and continuous industrial production.

The weak interfacial strength between Fe-based matrix and diamonds causes diamond particles to fall off prematurely, significantly affecting the cutting efficiency of diamond composites. This work aimed to optimize the interfacial microstructure and mechanical properties of the diamond/Fe-Ni-WC composites by coating a Mo 2 C layer on the diamond particles. The Mo 2 C-coated diamonds were prepared via the molten salt method. Diamond/Fe-Ni-WC composites were sintered by the hot-pressing process under a vacuum. The bending strength of composites with Mo 2 C-coated diamonds was improved from 804 to 996 MPa with the increased coating time. The energy dispersive spectroscopy scanning indicated that the Mo 2 C coating layer changed the interfacial composition between the matrix and the diamonds from Fe–C alloy to Mo 2 C, improving the interface strength. Moreover, the diamond protrusion heights of composites were raised by adding a Mo 2 C interface, resulting in an improvement in the cutting efficiency of impregnated diamond tools.

In order to improve the interfacial strength and toughness of aluminum alloys and CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastics) hybrid laminates, modified resin with lower porosity was prepared by adding nano silica treated with silane coupling agent into epoxy resin. Al/CFRP hybrid laminates with modified resin were prepared by physical liquid deposition method and hot-press process. The strength and toughness of Al/CFRP hybrid laminates with modified resin were evaluated by tensile shear test and end notch fracture (ENF) test. The experimental results showed that the interfacial shear strength of Al/CFRP hybrid modified resin laminates is 18.8 ± 0.8 MPa and the fracture energy is 1546.33 ± 10.26 J /m 2 , which is 28.76 % and 15.38 % higher than that of Al/CFRP hybrid laminates with raw resin, respectively. The well-dispersed silicon nanoparticles effectively mitigate internal stress during the cross-linking process of the modified resin, thereby diminishing the dimensions of microcracks within the modified resin. The transition layer of the modified resin interface formed a cooperative and smooth structure. This structure can ensure that the transition of elements in the interface layer is smooth, and it is not easy to cause stress concentration. The formation of new bonds (C-Si bonds) at the interface of the modified resin indicates an enhancement of bonding strength at the interface, superimposing upon van der Waals forces, thereby enhancing the adhesive strength of the modified resin interface.

Accurately reconstructing the intricate structure of natural organisms is the long-standing goal of 3-dimensional (3D) bioprinting. Projection-based 3D printing boasts the highest resolution-to-manufacturing time ratio among all 3D-printing technologies, rendering it a highly promising technique in this field. However, achieving standardized, high-fidelity, and high-resolution printing of composite structures using bioinks with diverse mechanical properties remains a marked challenge. The root of this challenge lies in the long-standing neglect of multi-material printability research. Multi-material printing is far from a simple physical assembly of different materials; rather, effective control of material interfaces is a crucial factor that governs print quality. The current research gap in this area substantively hinders the widespread application and rapid development of multi-material projection-based 3D bioprinting. To bridge this critical gap, we developed a multi-material projection-based 3D bioprinter capable of simultaneous printing with 6 materials. Building upon this, we established a fundamental framework for multi-material printability research, encompassing its core logic and essential process specifications. Furthermore, we clarified several critical issues, including the cross-linking behavior of multicomponent bioinks, mechanical mismatch and interface strength in soft–hard composite structures, the penetration behavior of viscous bioinks within hydrogel polymer networks, liquid entrapment and adsorption phenomena in porous heterogeneous structures, and error source analysis along with resolution evaluation in multi-material printing. This study offers a solid theoretical foundation and guidance for the quantitative assessment of multi-material projection-based 3D bioprinting, holding promise to advance the field toward higher precision and the reconstruction of more intricate biological structures.

The weak interfacial adhesion between carbon fibers (CFs) and poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) strongly hinders the true potential of composites in high performance applications. Herein, a novel heterocyclic derivative of PEEK was utilized as a linkage between CFs surface and PEEK matrix by a facile and high effective two-step method. CFs were firstly grafted with sodium sulfonate groups via aryl diazonium treatment, and then modified by the sizing agent poly(aryl indole ketone) (PAIK). This promising method takes advantages of strong cation-π interaction between PAIK and activated CFs, increased surface roughness of CFs, as well as good compatibility between PAIK and PEEK. As a result, the tensile strength and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of CF/PEEK composites were both improved after aryl diazonium treatment and PAIK sizing. The highest ILSS obtained for the 1 wt% PAIK modified CF/PEEK composites, which was 62.97% higher than that of untreated CFs based composites. Finally, the interfacial reinforcing mechanism in modified composites was proposed by analyzing the interfacial microstructure. This research provided a promising approach to produce high performance CF reinforced thermoplastic polymeric composites.

A molecular dynamics simulation was performed to investigate the migration of acrylamide (AM) to the carbon fiber (CF) surface from a liquid vinyl ester resin (VE), as well as the effect on the interfacial strength of CF/VE composite. The analysis of monomer concentration profile after the system equilibrium shows that an AM-rich interphase region was formed and the interfacial bond energy was increased. This can be explained by the greatest average atomic binding energy of AM with the CF surface. The migration of AM was confirmed experimentally by a depth profiling method using plasma etching and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The AM molecules in interphase could chemically bond CF surface and VE matrix. As a result, the interface shear strength and interlaminar shear strength of CF/VE composite were enhanced by 126.98% and 81.86%, respectively.

The objective of this paper is to improve the interfacial bonding between the oxidized bamboo fiber and epoxy resin by grafting amino-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Bamboo fiber was oxidized by a 2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl oxidation system. The amino-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes were then grafted on its surface by impregnation method. It was found by single fiber pull-out testing that the interfacial bonding between the bamboo fiber and epoxy resin was improved by 31.5% after the oxidation treatment of the fiber. After further grafting 0.5 wt% amino-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes, the interfacial bonding was improved by 106.4%. The fracture morphologies and AFM scanning results of individual sample revealed the mechanism of the treatment from amino-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes strengthens interfacial bonding between the fiber and epoxy. The effect of the amino-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes content on the interfacial properties of the bamboo fiber/epoxy resin was investigated, a threshold for the content was identified.

Improving the resistances of organic high-performance fibers to harsh environments and enhancing the interfacial interactions of fiber-reinforced composites have become crucial in various applications. In this report, ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) and ZnO nanowires (NWs) were successfully “ grown ” on the surfaces of aramid fibers (AFs) by grafting with γ-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (KH550) followed by the growth of nano-ZnO. The surface functionalized AFs exhibited improved UV-resistances. After 168 h of ultraviolet exposure, the tensile retention rates of the ZnO-NP- and ZnO-NW-grafted AFs reached 95.6% and 97.7%, respectively, which were significantly higher than the value of 79.1% of the bare fiber. Meanwhile, the introduction of the KH500 and ZnO formed a nano-interphase, enhancing the interfacial strength of the fiber-reinforced epoxy resin composites . The interfacial shear strengths (IFSSs) of the composites with AF-g-ZnO NPs and AF-g-ZnO NWs were 42.9 and 47.8 MPa, respectively, whereas that of bare AF-reinforced epoxy resin was only 31.2 MPa. Nano-ZnO was physically deposited on the AF surfaces without KH550. The IFSS was 36.4 MPa for the AF-ZnO NP and 38.8 MPa for the AF-ZnO NW, which were lower than those of the grafted composites. Therefore, the chemical grafting nano-ZnO on high-performance fibers provides a new strategy for improving the UV-resistances of advanced fibers and to enhance the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced composites.

Functionalized modified SiO2 was prepared by a mild and simple dip coating method, and a layer of functionalized modified SiO2 coating was introduced onto the carbon fiber surfaces not only to improve the surface wettability and activity of carbon fiber, but also strengthen the interphase of the carbon fiber/polyimide composite. The successful functionalization of SiO2 by bis[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl] tetrasulfide (TESPT) silane was confirmed. Moreover, a uniform coating with well-dispersed particles on a carbon fiber surface was achieved with a 1.0 wt% addition of TESPT-modified SiO2 (TESPT@SiO2) particles. Under this condition it was observed that the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and interfacial shear strength (IFSS) augmentation was 26.37% and 38.27%, respectively, in comparison with carbon fiber composite coated only with polyimide resin. The functionalized modified SiO2 coating could effectively heal the surface defects of fiber, and the fiber tensile strength increased by more than 10.61%. This study provides a scalable, simple, and cost effective method of simultaneously increasing the interfacial strength of composites.

Carbon fiber/PEEK composites have gained significant attention in the field of continuous carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs). However, it remains challenging to improve the weak interfacial strength between carbon fiber (CF) and PEEK matrix. In this paper, strong interactions at the interface of sizing agent and carbon fiber were effectively achieved by introducing chemical bonds. Specifically, a soluble PEEK sizing agent where aniline served as pendant group and phenylacetylene served as blocking agent was synthesized. In the meantime, the phenylacetylene group was grafted on the carbon fiber surface through electroreduction . Then, the soluble sizing agent was used to size the electrochemical treated carbon fiber. After the heat treatment, chemical bonds were established by the crosslinking reaction of phenylacetylene groups existed in both the surface of carbon fiber and sizing agent. Meanwhile, the crystalline structure in the sizing layer was remained, which could improve the toughness of the interphase. As a result, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) increased by 137.5% from 43.4 MPa of the untreated carbon fiber (U-CF) to 103.1 MPa of the reductive electrografted and coated carbon fiber (E-C-CF). The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) also increased by 66.8% from 58.4 MPa of untreated CF/PEEK composites (U-CF/PEEK) to 97.4 MPa of reductive electrografted and coated CF/PEEK composites (E-C-CF/PEEK). The outstanding performances could be attributed to better compatibility of sizing agent and most importantly, the existence of chemical bonds between the carbon fiber and sizing agent.

Stress concentration and weak interfacial strength affect the mechanical properties of short carbon fibers (CFs) reinforced polymer composites . In this work, the cauliflower-like short carbon fibers (CCFs) were prepared and the point was to illuminate the effects of fiber morphology on the mechanical properties of the CCFs/rigid polyurethane (RPU) composites. The results indicated that the surface structure of CCFs could increase the surface roughness of the fibers and the contact area between fibers and matrix, thereby promoting the formation of irregular interface. Compared with pure RPU and initial CFs/RPU composites, the strength and toughness of CCFs/RPU composites were simultaneously improved. The satisfactory performance was attributed to the special fibers structure, which played an anchoring role and consumed more energy during crack propagation .
