In this paper, a modified epoxy emulsifier (MEE) was synthesised for preparing an aqueous epoxy sizing agent, which was used to reinforce interfacial adhesion of carbon fibre (CF)/epoxy composites. The sizing agent was evenly wrapped on the fibre surface with tiny particles, as well as increased the surface roughness of fibres; meanwhile, the activated carbon atoms on the surface of sized CF were further increased, as confirmed via SEM, AFM and XPS . The contact angle (CA) of fibres was observed via drop-on-fibre system. The results showed that the wettability of CF was significantly improved and the CA of CF was reduced by approximately 23°. According to the single-fibre fragmentation test, the interfacial shear strength of sized CF/EP composites increased by 70%–76%. The improvement of interfacial adhesion could be mainly attributed to the generation of chemical interaction bonds and the interface mechanical interlock of CF and the epoxy matrix.

Cracking resistance and durability are the main concerns in asphalt mixture for pavement. The addition of fibers is an effective way for reinforcing asphalt mixture. Bamboo fibers (BFs) show unique characteristics such as high specific strength and modulus, renewability and low cost. Thus, BFs mechanically extracted from green bamboos were used to improve the mechanical properties of asphalt mixture and thus increase the service life of asphalt pavement. For improving the poor interfacial adhesion resulted from the hydrophobicity of asphalt and the hydrophilicity of BFs, a melamine–formaldehyde (MF) copolymer was synthesized and used to modify the BFs. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy (XPS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses were conducted to reveal the surface chemistry of BFs. The results proved that the MF copolymer was grafted onto the surface of BFs via the formation of covalent bonding between hydroxyl groups of BFs and amino group of melamine. The mechanical properties of the asphalt mixture were evaluated by Marshall stability, direct tensile, and indirect tensile tests. Results showed that the addition of modified BFs increased the stability and the tensile strength of the asphalt mixture. SEM images of the fractured surface of asphalt mixture indicated that strong adhesion was formed between the modified BFs and asphalt matrices.

Grounded in the principle of “like dissolves like”, the development of water-soluble sizing agents characterized by matrix-like structures has emerged as a focal point of research within the interface domain. Nevertheless, the reliance exclusively on the entanglement forces between the sizing agent and the matrix is deemed inadequate. In this study, a novel water-soluble dual-component sizing agent tailored for the nylon 6 (PA6) resin matrix has been developed. By leveraging the self-emulsifying and water-soluble properties of sodium lignosulfonate (SL) and polyamic acid (PAA), these components are concurrently introduced onto the fiber surface. Following treatment, a distinct interfacial region is established on the fiber surface as a result of their interactions. Exploiting their intrinsic differences at processing temperatures facilitates differential wetting of the matrix resin on the fiber surface, consequently resulting in the formation of a “mechanical interlocking” structure between the fiber and the matrix. The findings reveal that the flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength of the modified CF/PA6 composites achieved values of 977.8 MPa and 74.1 MPa, corresponding to enhancements of 27.4 % and 28.8 %, respectively, when compared to their unmodified counterparts. This innovative sizing agent not only significantly enhances interfacial adhesion but also confers high added-value potential to lignin-derived materials, a factor that is essential for future sustainable development.

The weak interfacial adhesion caused by the low wettability of carbon fiber (CF) and inert polyetheretherketone (PEEK) hinders the great application potential of CF/PEEK composites. In this study, the interface between CF and PEEK was modified by coating hydroxylated PEEK grafted onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes (M-HPEEK). Modified CFs by M-HPEEK sizing had rougher surfaces with more polar groups, showing decreased contact angle and increased surface energy. The wettability of these CFs was enhanced, beneficial to PEEK infiltration and physical adhesion improvement. As a result, the interlaminar shear strength , flexural strength , and flexural modulus of modified CF/PEEK composites were increased by 73.0% (84.7 MPa), 163.2% (906.2 MPa), and 84.8% (58.4 GPa), respectively. An improved interface with stress transferring was proved by the interface debonding failure changed to fiber crack and resin yield. M-HPEEK sizing is considered as a promising modification method to optimize the interface performance of composites.

The interfacial bonding of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites plays a critical role in the overall performance of the composites. Poor interfacial bonding leads to catastrophic damage of composites when subjected to external loads. In this study, three-dimensional (3D) NH 2 -UiO-66 nanoparticles in-situ synthesis on the carbon fiber (CF) surface using an electrochemical method was achieved facilely and efficiently to enhance the interfacial adhesion of CF/PBPESK composites. The influence of incorporating 3D NH 2 -UiO-66 nanoparticles into the interphase on the interfacial and mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced composites was systematically investigated. The NH 2 -UiO-66 nanoparticles significantly increased the carbon fibers surface energy. The flexural, interlaminar shear and interfacial shear strength of the N–CF–6min/PBPESK composite were improved by 19 %, 31 %, and 93 %, respectively, compared to the D-CF/PBPESK composite. Furthermore, the interfacial failure mechanism of the composites was investigated. This approach offered a simple and efficient strategy for the in-situ synthesis of interfacial phase characterized by robust mechanical locking effects.

To solve the poor interface between aramid fiber and rubber, this paper studies a method of constructing nanostructures on the fiber surface. First, functional groups such as hydroxyl and amino groups were introduced onto aramid fiber through the Michael addition of tannic acid and polyethyleneimine . Then, the modified aramid fiber was impregnated in the aramid nanofiber/carbon nanotube aqueous dispersion to prepare a surface-coated fiber. The fibers and surface nanostructures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope, Raman spectroscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermalgravimetric analysis, and H pull-out tests in detail. The results show that the H pull-out force of the coated fiber is increased by 126.4% compared with the original aramid fiber, which is due to the good mechanical interlocking at the interface of the composites. In addition, carbon nanotubes could form a conductive path through mutual entanglement and overlap on the surface of aramid fiber, which also gives the function of real-time monitoring of deformation of the composites.

To improve the unsatisfactory interfacial adhesion of carbon fiber/polyamide-6 (CF/PA6) composites, a hyperbranched waterborne polyurethane (HWPU) sizing agent with high-solid content was designed. As a carboxy chain extender for HWPU, carbic anhydride-tris(hydroxymethyl)methyl aminomethane (CA-THAM) with a self-catalytic capacity was synthesized to accelerate the chain extension. The synthesized hyperbranched polyurethane exhibited low viscosity, along with a strong double-electron layer conformation after dispersing in water. The electrostatic repulsion between the latex particles effectively prevented agglomeration, delivering a high solid content of 58% for the sizing agent. The influence of different sizing agent concentrations on the wettability of CF as well as the interfacial properties of composites was systematically studied. Compared with unsized CF/PA6 composites, the interlaminar shear strength and flexural strength of CF-1.5 wt%/PA6 composites were up to 60.3 MPa and 508.4 MPa, with an increment of 50.3% and 27.7%, respectively. Furthermore, the interfacial strengthening mechanism of sizing agent was discussed. The preparation of this high-solid content sizing agents was facile and environmentally friendly, which would hopefully reduce costs during the transportation.

A simple and effective modification for carbon fiber (CF) is presented in this work. CF was functionalized with a polydopamine (PDA) layer by pH-induced and oxidative self-polymerization of dopamine through a facile dip-coating procedure. The microstructure and chemical characteristics of the CF surface before and after modification were investigated by SEM, AFM, IR, Raman, XPS and DCA. The results manifested that PDA functionalization could increase the roughness, polarity and wettability of the CF surface, which were advantageous to promote the interaction between CF and the matrix. The interfacial properties of single modified CF (dCF) and pristine CF with resins were measured by micro-droplet method. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of single dCF with maleic anhydride grafted PP (MAPP) modified polypropylene (PP) matrix was 284.3% higher than that of PP/CF. Both the dCF and pristine CF were also used to prepare PP composites and their mechanical properties were discussed in detail. The PP/MAPP/dCF composite achieved the combination of excellent flexural and impact properties. The ultimate flexural strength and impact energy increased by 105.0% and 223.0%, respectively. The excellent bulk performance was concluded to be mainly due to the superior interfacial adhesion obtained by covalent reaction and hydrogen bonding between PDA on the CF and MAPP in the PP matrix, which was also confirmed by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and fracture morphology observations.

The sizing process is the best surface modification method to improve the interfacial properties of carbon fiber reinforced resin composites. In order to reinforce the interfacial adhesion of carbon fiber(CF)/vinyl resin (VE) composites, one novel emulsifying main slurry (NYDA) and resin (NE) were designed and synthesized from the view of the covalent bond between the CF and VE. The slurry NY-NE (2 wt% emulsion) exhibited excellent storage stability for three months. For introducing abundant active functional groups (C=C) to the NY-NE sized carbon fibers (NCF) surface, the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of NCF/VE composites (62.44 MPa) has increased by 69.31 % compared with unsizing carbon fiber (UCF)/VE composites (36.88 MPa). Moreover, the interfacial adhesion between CF and VE was also enhanced by the formation of C=C groups on the CFs surface to react with the VE effectively, which reinforced the interfacial layer to well transfer the load among the composite resin.

To improve interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber (CF) and epoxy resin, a low-cost and environment-friendly method was developed to treat the CF surface via the bio-inspired co-deposition of catechol (Cc) and polyethyleneimine (PEI). It is noteworthy that the deposition process reacts at room temperature with water as solvent, and does not require harsh conditions or the use of toxic reagents. After treatment, the CF/epoxy composites were endowed with excellent mechanical properties and showed increases of 51.9% and 51.7% for flexural strength and ILSS, respectively, in comparison with unsized CF laminates. The analyses of fractured surface morphologies and strengthening mechanism of the composites indicated that the uniformly coated Cc-PEI on the fiber surface can promote the diffusion and entanglement of the matrix molecular chains and form chemical bonding as well as π-π stacking, thus effectively improving the interfacial adhesion. In addition, the facile process disclosed in this study can provide a new strategy to not only for CF treating but also expected to be used in the modification of other high performance fiber reinforcement and industrial applications.

A series of self-emulsified waterborne epoxy resin (WEP) emulsions were used as surface sizing for carbon fibers (CFs) to improve the interfacial adhesion between the CF and epoxy matrix. In this work, the hydrogenated bisphenol-A epoxy resin (HBPAE) was modified by polyethylene glycol (PEG) with molecular weights of 400, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 4000, and 6000 g/mol. The properties of the WEP emulsion were examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. The surface characteristics of sized CFs were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Afterwards, CF/EP composites were prepared and their fracture surface and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) were examined. The results indicated that PEG2000 modified HBPAE sizing had the optimum emulsion stability and film-forming ability. Meanwhile, the results also demonstrated that a continuous and uniform sizing layer was formed on the surface of CFs and the surface sizing was excellent in improving the chemical activity of CFs. Compared with unsized CFs, the O1s/C1s composition ratio was observed to increase from 11.51% to 33.17% and the ILSS of CF/EP composites increased from 81.2 to 89.7 MPa, exhibiting better mechanical property than that of commercial Takemoto S64 sized CFs. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel method of constructing nanostructures on the surface of aramid fiber (AF) was demonstrated in this article. Through the π–π* interaction between the aramid nanofiber (ANF) and graphene (G), the G/ANF dispersion stably existed in water. In an alkaline solution of tannic acid (TA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI), a TA/PEI (TP) layer was deposited on the surface of AF to introduce functional groups. Then, the modified AF was impregnated with the G/ANF dispersion to construct surface nanostructures to enhance the interfacial adhesion between the fiber and rubber. The results showed that the H pull-out force of the AF and rubber after impregnating with G, ANF, and G/ANF was increased by 15.3, 21.5, and 84.7%, respectively, compared with the untreated AF. The Raman spectroscopy and SEM results show that there is a π–π* interaction between G and ANF, and the ANFs are firmly attached to the surface of G. The hybrid G/ANF nanofiller can form 3D nanostructures on the surface of AF to improve the mechanical interlocking and stress transfer between the fiber and the rubber matrix, thereby achieving excellent interfacial adhesion while maintaining the excellent mechanical properties of AF.
