Based on the dissolution and conversion mechanism of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, insulating solid short-chain polysulfides (Li 2 S 2 /Li 2 S) will continuously passivate and corrode the active interface of cathode and anode, which seriously affects its performance. Herein, ammonium benzenesulfonate (NH 4 BS) is proposed as a soluble ammonium salt to dissolve Li 2 S in the ether electrolyte, according to the inductive effect of NH 4 + cation and O atom on Li-S bond. This is beneficial to alleviate the interface problem of electrodes and irreversible loss of active materials. Noticeably, soluble Li 2 S regulates its deposition behavior from 2D to 3D, which is conducive to the more effective use of conductive surface. Moreover, the addition of NH 4 BS can increase the dissociation degree of long-chain polysulfides, so that the diffusion rate and reaction kinetics of active substances are improved. Profiting from these functions, the Li-S cells with NH 4 BS act out excellent cyclic stability in the long cycle of 0.5 C and 2 C. Under the extreme conditions of high sulfur loading and low electrolyte-sulfur ratio, the cells with NH 4 BS can cycle stably for 196 cycles, which significantly prolongs the battery life. The proposal of NH 4 BS broadens a new idea to solve the interface problem of Li-S cells and stimulate the research enthusiasm of developing soluble ammonium salt.

In recent years, the rapid development of the electric vehicle industry has led to the requirement of Li-ion batteries (LIBs) with a higher energy density and better safety. Therefore, solid-state lithium batteries with the above advantages have attracted a lot of attention. However, solving the interfacial problem between cathodes and the solid-state electrolyte has become a major challenge in the practical application of solid-state lithium-ion batteries. In this article, ETPTA (trimethylolpropane ethoxylate triacrylate)-PEG (poly(ethylene glycol)) is introduced onto the surface of LiNi 0 . 8 Co 0 . 1 Mn 0 . 1 O 2 cathode materials by ultraviolet irradiation. TEM and FTIR analyses reflect the existence of the composite coating layer. Electrochemical tests reveal that the coated material has better cycle stability (capacity retention remains 84% after 100 cycles), lower interfacial impedance and higher rate capabilities (34 mA h g -1 at 2 C). These results reflect the fact that the coating layer plays a significant role in improving the interfacial contact between the cathode and solid-state electrolyte and suppressing surface side reactions.

Lithium dendrite growth in solid electrolytes (SEs) is one of the most serious challenges to the commercialization of all-solid-state lithium-metal batteries(ASSLMBs) with SEs. Herein , we propose an electrochemical strategy to realize an in-situ modified solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) that can simultaneously resolve both interfacial and dendrite issues. By controlling the current and deposition time in electrochemical treatment, ordered reaction between lithium metal and Si 3 N 4 particles are realized to effectively produce a Li 3 N-LiF-rich multifunctional composit including Li−Si alloys. The consequent symmetric cells demonstrated a remarkably high critical current density up to 3.3mA cm −2 at room temperature and stable plating/stripping process over 1200h at a current density of 0.5mA cm −2 . Moreover, LiCoO 2 /Li 6 PS 5 Cl/Li ASSLMBs delivered a high safety and long life of more than 500 cycles at 1.0mA cm −2 with a steady coulombic efficiency.

Solid-state sodium metal batteries utilizing inorganic solid electrolytes (SEs) hold immense potentials such as intrinsical safety, high energy density, and environmental sustainability. However, the interfacial inhomogeneity/instability at the anode-SE interface usually triggers the penetration of sodium dendrites into the electrolyte, leading to short circuit and battery failure. Herein, confronting with the original nonuniform and high-resistance solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) at the Na-Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 interface, an oxygen-regulated SEI innovative approach is proposed to enhance the cycling stability of anode-SEs interface, through a spontaneous reaction between the metallic sodium (containing trace amounts of oxygen) and the Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 SE. The oxygen-regulated spontaneous SEI is thin, uniform, and kinetically stable to facilitate homogenous interfacial Na + transportation. Benefitting from the optimized SEI, the assembled symmetric cell exhibits an ultra-stable sodium plating/stripping cycle for over 6600 h under a practical capacity of 3 mAh cm −2 . Quasi-solid-state batteries with Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode deliver excellent cyclability over 500 cycles at a rate of 0.5 C (1 C = 117 mA cm −2 ) with a high capacity retention of 95.4%. This oxygen-regulated SEI strategy may offer a potential avenue for the future development of high-energy-density solid-state metal batteries.

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) have already attracted significant attention due to their potential to offer high energy density and excellent safety as compared to the currently used lithium-ion batteries with liquid electrolytes. The use of a lithium anode in SSBs is extremely important to realize these advantages. Starting from the synthesis of a highly conductive cubic garnet solid electrolyte (Li6.375La3Zr1.375Nb0.625O12, LLZNO) using Nb as a structure stabilizer, in this study, we demonstrated the resolution of interfacial problems between the garnet electrolyte and lithium anode and the integration of the lithium anode into garnet-based SSBs by modifying the as-synthesized LLZNO with a Sn thin film. Due to the Sn modification, the interfacial resistances between the garnet electrolyte and the lithium anode decreased approximately 20 times to only 46.6 Ω cm2. The fast and reversible lithium plating/stripping under high current densities and the excellent battery performance of Li/Sn-LLZNO/LiFePO4 full cells were achieved. This improvement is ascribed to the formation of a Li–Sn alloy interlayer, which severs as a self-limited stable and conductive interface, bridging the garnet electrolyte and the lithium anode and enabling fast and stable lithium transport. As a proof-of-concept, this effective surface modification method will offer inspirations to researchers for overcoming the interfacial problems and promoting the development of high-performance SSBs.

All-solid-state bulk-type lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are considered ultimate solutions to the safety issues associated with conventional LIBs using flammable liquid electrolyte. The development of bulk-type all-solid-state LIBs has been hindered by the low loading of active cathode materials, hence low specific surface capacity, and by the high interface resistance, which results in low rate and cyclic performance. In this contribution, we propose and demonstrate a synergistic all-composite approach to fabricating flexible all-solid-state LIBs. PEO-based composite cathode layers (filled with LiFePO4 particles) of ∼300 μm in thickness and composite electrolyte layers (filled with Al-LLZTO particles) are stacked layer-by-layer with lithium foils as negative layer and hot-pressed into a monolithic all-solid-state LIB. The flexible LIB delivers a high specific discharge capacity of 155 mAh/g, which corresponds to an ultrahigh surface capacity of 10.8 mAh/cm2, exhibits excellent capacity retention up to at least 10 cycles and could work properly under harsh operating conditions such as bending or being sectioned into pieces. The all-composite approach is favorable for improving both mesoscopic and microscopic interfaces inside the all-solid-state LIB and may provide a new toolbox for design and fabrication of all-solid-state LIBs.

The interfacial problem caused by solid–solid contact is an important issue faced by a solid-state electrolyte (SSE). Herein, a cross-linked composite solid electrolyte (CSE) poly(vinylene carbonate) (PVCA)─ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate (ETPTA)─Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LAGP) (PEL) is prepared by in situ thermal polymerization. The ionic conductivity and Li+ transference number (tLi+) of PEL increase significantly due to the addition of LAGP, which can reach 1.011 × 10–4 S cm–1 and 0.451 respectively. The electrochemical stable window is also widened to 4.68 V. Benefiting from the integrated interfacial structure, the assembled coin cell shows low interfacial resistance. The all-solid-state NCM622|PEL|Li coin cell exhibits an initial discharge capacity of 169.7 mA h g–1 and 70% capacity retention over 100 cycles at 0.2 C, demonstrating excellent cycling stability.

The interface issue poses a limitation on the fast charging of solid-state batteries (SSBs), with the high-impedance non-Faraday electric field serving as a pivotal factor. However, the mechanism of fast-charging capability degradation triggered by the dynamic evolution of non-Faraday electric fields remains unclear due to the lack of particle-scale nondestructive detection techniques. Here, we dissect the generation and elimination processes of non-Faradaic electric field in segments using the developed operando cryogenic transmission X-ray microscopy (Cryo-TXM). This method accurately tracks the ion self-balancing pathways in LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) post-fast-charging, elucidating the high polarization during late charging caused by exacerbated irreversible local electric field. By intermittently applying reverse potential during fast charging to alleviate the exacerbation of non-Faradaic electric field at the cathode interface, we achieved a roughly 400% reversible capacity increase of SSBs at 10 C. This insightful dynamic imaging method effectively captures and resolves the transient, opaque signals within SSBs, significantly enhancing their fast-charging performance.
