Constructing Scalable Membrane with Tunable Wettability by Electrolysis-Induced Interface pH for Oil–Water Separation

Shaopeng Gan,Hui Li,Xu Zhu,Xilu Liu,Kangxing Wei,Lei Zhu,Baojun Wei,Xiaoming Luo,Jianqiang Zhang,Qingzhong Xue

The tunable wettability by pH-stimulus has great potential in liquid adhesion, transport, collection, and separation due to its rapid response and wide control range. However, achieving pH-regulated wettability on the selected region of material without acid–base contamination presents a distinct challenge for the existing methods. Here, a scalable conductive network membrane is prepared with switchable wettability by regulating interfacial pH. The generation and diffusion of interfacial pH on the selected region of the membrane are regulated through the confinement electrolysis process, which is adapted to both spatial arrangements of the conductive network and the electrical potential. By regulating the interfacial pH (>13), the wettability of the selected region can change from superhydrophobicity (Water contact angle = 150°) to superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity (Water contact angle = 0°) without additional reagent in 30 s under 15 V. Based on the switchable wettability and precise controllability, the prepared membrane can efficiently realize on-demand oil–water separation (>99%) and in situ extraction-back extraction. The membrane with switchable wettability is programable and free of acid–base contamination, which may have broad practical application potential in intelligent fluid-related systems.

Manipulating Interfacial pH by the Base-Catalyzed Hydrolysis Strategy for Highly Reversible Zinc Anodes

Weihao Wang,Qin Liu,Hong Zhang,Lianmeng Cui,Bomian Zhang,Baokang Niu,Ahmed Eissa Abdelmaoula,Chunhua Han,Lin Xu

The concentrated hydroxide ions (OH–) resulting from the hydrogen evolution reaction gives rise to substantial challenges for the Zn anode/electrolyte interface, including proliferating byproducts and severe dendrite growth. Herein, methyl acetate (MA) additive is proposed to eliminate the crippling OH–, hence manipulating interfacial pH and alleviating accumulation of byproducts. Raman spectra and FTIR analysis elucidate the underlying mechanism of the hydrolysis reaction, which means attacked carbonyl corresponding to the elimination of OH–. In situ pH monitoring verifies availably inhibited OH– concentration with MA additive. From multidimension analysis, the base-catalyzed hydrolysis strategy can significantly protect Zn anode from deterioration during “shelf life” contributing to following superior Zn plating/stripping. Consequently, with MA additive, the pH is stabilized at a lower level of 5.11. Zn plating/stripping achieves a conspicuous cycle life of 2000 h (2.0 mA cm–2 with 2.0 mA h cm–2). Even after “shelf life”, Zn||Zn symmetric cells deliver an impressive cycling stability of 700 h compared to the counterpart of 22 h in ZnSO4. Zn||MnO2/CNT pouch cells with a high mass loading cathode of ∼8 mg cm–2 exhibit a stable lifespan of 100 cycles at 1 C. This work demonstrates a hydrolysis strategy to manipulate interfacial pH and stabilize the interface for the reversible Zn anode.

Cobalt–aluminum oxide clusters-embedded γ-Al2O3 nanosheets for peroxymonosulfate activation: Interfacial pH-buffering property to eliminate cobalt leaching and boost the catalytic activity

Ding Liu,Zhenkun Su,Bo Han,Kaisheng Xia,Chenggang Zhou,Qiang Gao

Cobalt–aluminum oxide clusters-embedded γ-Al 2 O 3 nanosheets (CAO@AO) were facilely fabricated and developed for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Interestingly, the Al–OH-rich amphiphilic surface of CAO@AO endowed the catalyst with unique interfacial pH-buffering property, which stabilized the reaction media at nearly neural level and thus prevented the cobalt sites from leaching. Moreover, the presence of Al–OH groups around the Co−Al oxide clusters facilitated the activation of PMS and the redox cycle of Co 2+ /Co 3+ , which resulted in a boosted catalytic activity. Consequently, the CAO@AO exhibited zero leaching of cobalt and high efficacy for PMS activation, enabling complete and ultrafast removal of metronidazole with a significantly higher turnover frequency (TOF, 1.83 min −1 ) than that of Co 3 O 4 (0.004 min −1 ). It was also demonstrated that introducing suitable foreign metal into CAO@AO could further enhance the catalytic activity (e.g., TOF of Mn(40%)-CAO@AO: 5.80 min −1 ). Furthermore, Mn(40%)-CAO@AO-decorated granular support was synthesized that dominated a continuous-flow degradation in column reaction system.

In-situ scanning electrochemical microscopy visualization of self-passivation in galvanized steel under aggressive environments

Zeyu Huang,Hao Li,Yuhua Xiao,Qinhao Zhang,Pan Liu,Liankui Wu,Fahe Cao

Ensuring the long-term durability and safety of galvanized steel structures in industrial and environmental applications requires a deep understanding of their corrosion resistance, particularly at defects such as cut edges and scratches. These sites often initiate localized corrosion due to micro-environmental inhomogeneities. This study investigates the dynamic corrosion behavior of galvanized Zn/Q235 steel couples by integrating macro-electrochemical testing with in-situ high-resolution scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) to reveal the underlying interfacial physicochemical mechanisms. While macro-electrochemical measurements indicated significant passivation, with the corrosion current density decreasing by over an order of magnitude to 1.00 × 10⁻ 6 A·cm⁻ 2 after 24   h, micro-scale SECM mapping revealed a more complex mechanism. As corrosion progressed, oxygen reduction reactions became increasingly concentrated at the Zn/Q235 interface, where localized pH stabilized near 8. This remarkable pH buffering is attributed to the continuous precipitation of zinc corrosion products, an interfacial process that consumes both Zn 2+ and OH⁻ to form a passivating layer. At simulated scratch defects, an initially aggressive galvanic coupling with steep pH gradients was gradually suppressed as these precipitates formed, demonstrating a self-passivation effect. These findings elucidate a locally driven, interfacial chemical buffering mechanism, governed by precipitate formation, that controls passive film development and slows degradation. The results establish direct links between interfacial pH regulation, corrosion-product formation, and self-passivation at defects, advancing the interface science underpinning environmentally resilient galvanized coatings.
