Muscovite has been used increasingly as a substrate in flexible electronics and fillers in high-performance nanocomposites. Muscovite-based interfacial interactions play a crucial rule in material fabrication. Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs) have proven useful in characterizing molecular interactions within/between condensed phases. The present study aimed to determine the HSPs of raw muscovite (RM) and to investigate solvent dispersion mechanisms of RM. To achieve this, the solubilities of RM in 17 solvents were evaluated by dispersion tests, and the HSPs of RM were calculated as the center of the optimal solubility rotated-ellipsoid in HSP space, which included all good solvents, had the smallest number of outliers, and had the smallest volume. The resulting dispersion, polar, and hydrogen bonding components of RM were 18.301, 2.366, and 3.727 MPa 1/2 , respectively. By considering the HSPs and Kamlet-Taft's solvatochromic parameters of solvents, we concluded that the low polarity of RM is due to hindered K + /H + exchange on the RM surface, resulting from limited water/moisture contact. For solvent dispersion of RM, essential conditions include strong dispersion forces and weak polar forces, finely tuned to match the surface property of RM at a certain hydration level. The HSPs of RM determined from dispersion tests were restricted to predicting/characterizing RM-based interfacial phenomena in an environment with strictly controlled water/moisture content. The HSP calculation method proposed herein was applicable to any clay mineral.

Flotation-introduced nanobubbles were expected to be an efficient and economical method to recover fine muscovite. This study aimed to explore the mechanism of the change appearing in flotation after introducing nanobubbles through micro-flotation, particle vision and measurement, flotation kinetics, and induction time measurement. The results of micro-flotation, which respectively feed muscovite or muscovite pretreated with nanobubbles in different concentrations of dodecylamine (DDA), were fitted with four flotation kinetic models using Origin. Different methods were used to examine how the introduction of nanobubbles affected the flotation process. The results showed that nanobubbles improved both the flotation rate and recovery of muscovite. Nanobubbles played different roles in different stirring intensities. At low stirring intensity, nanobubbles did not perform well. In suitable stirring intensity, nanobubbles helped particles aggregate and improved the collision probability between bubbles and minerals. However, at high stirring intensity, shear forces caused by ultra-high fluid velocities could disrupt particle aggregation.

Lepidolite is one of the important resources containing Li, Rb, and Cs. Currently, sulfate roasting is the predominant industrial method for processing lepidolite. However, this approach faces challenges including low comprehensive recovery, high energy consumption, and significant reagent usage. This study introduces a clean and efficient technology for recovering Li, Rb, and Cs from lepidolite, based on alkali and water cycles. The process encompasses collaborative leaching with a mixture of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH) 2 ), selective impurity removal using Ca(OH) 2 , and alkaline extraction for lithium recovery. Experimental results demonstrated that the leachate could be recycled 2 times to enrich Li, Rb, and Cs. The average leaching efficiencies after 2 cycles were: 92.7 % Li, 94.3 % Rb, 94.5 % Cs, and 94.6 % K, under the leaching conditions of 400 g/L NaOH, 0.6 of mass ratio of Ca(OH) 2 /ore, <106 μm particle size, 5 h reaction time and 250 °C. The XRD and SEM-EDS analyses revealed that the leach residue comprised the phases Ca 0.63 Fe 2.37 Fe 2 (SiO 4 ) 3 , NaCaHSiO 4 , CaF 2 , and Fe 3 O 4 . Furthermore, Ca(OH)₂ was employed for selective impurity removal from the solution, achieving a valuable metal loss of only 0.67 %. Subsequently, Li was efficiently recovered via synergistic solvent extraction using dodecyl phenyl methyl-β-diketone (LIX 54) and trialkylphosphine oxide (TRPO). The 85 % volume fractions of raffinate of Li could be returned to pressure leaching to reuse H 2 O and NaOH. The process developed in this study features environmental friendliness, high comprehensive recovery, and low reagent consumption, providing a promising approach for the clean and efficient utilization of lepidolite.

A polymer matrix composite was prepared by incorporating microcrystalline muscovite fillers into a boron-modified phenolic resin. Thermogravimetric analyses indicated that microcrystalline muscovite significantly enhanced the thermal stability of boron-modified phenolic resin under air atmosphere. Then the composite was heated in a furnace. After heated, the homogeneous structure of the composite was converted into a layered structure with a ceramic shell on the surface. The layered structure was investigated by electron probe micro-analysis and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The elemental content and chemical binding state of the layered structure were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. On the surface, the reaction between SiO2 and Al2O3 occurred, thus microcrystalline muscovite fillers were transformed into mullite shell. The mullite shell could protect char from further oxidation at elevated temperatures. Therefore, a amount of reserved char could react with SiO2 to generate Si–C bond in the inner of the composite.

Europium(III), i.e., Eu(III), is chemically analogous to the trivalent lanthanides (Ln) and actinides (An). A good understanding of the adsorption behaviour of Eu(III) on mica group minerals is critical to the safety evaluation of the radioactive contamination. Nevertheless, the structural complexity of micaceous minerals makes it difficult to draw a consistent conclusion in the study of Eu(III) migration. In this work, we contrastively studied Eu(III) adsorption on dioctahedral muscovite and trioctahedral phlogopite as functions of pH, ionic strength, background electrolytes, interaction sequence, and fulvic acid (FA). Batch experiments showed that Eu(III) adsorption on both micas was strongly dependent on pH but quite independent on ionic strength that is determined by Na + . Planar sites are available on both muscovite and phlogopite while interlayer sites only on phlogopite under Na + and Ca 2+ electrolytes (not for K + and Cs + ). An interlayer expansion of phlogopite, as indicated by a newly appeared diffraction peak at ~6° 2-theta, occurred along with Eu(III) adsorption, which was also confirmed by transmission electron microscopy . Furthermore, the initial Eu(III) concentrations, the concentration ratios between Eu(III) and Cs + , and the reaction sequences of Eu(III)-electrolytes-FA affected both the adsorption behaviour of Eu(III) and reversely the structural alteration of phlogopite. The sequential extraction showed that the adsorbed Eu(III) was mainly in the ion-exchangeable form while the addition of FA could increase the portion of coordinative species. The currently proposed Eu(III) adsorption mechanism can shed new light on predicting the migration of Ln/An(III) at the mica-rich solid-liquid interface on a molecular scale.

Cobalt, as a scarce transition metal resource, is widely used in batteries, catalysts, and alloys. Carrollite is an important source of cobalt; however, declining ore grades necessitate pre-concentration via flotation prior to smelting. The separation of carrollite is hindered by muscovite, a common gangue mineral in such ores. Although polymaleic acid (PMA) is widely used as a depressant for silicate gangue minerals, its effectiveness in depressing muscovite flotation has not been systematically investigated. This study introduces PMA to achieve efficient separation of carrollite from muscovite. Flotation tests showed that PMA had a minimal impact on carrollite recovery but significantly depressed muscovite flotation. Particularly in artificial mixed ore flotation, the muscovite content in the concentrate decreased from 25 % to 4.4 %, while the carrollite content remained above 45 %. Adsorption and wettability measurements confirmed the preferential adsorption of PMA on the muscovite surface, thereby significantly enhancing its hydrophilicity. In contrast, PAX (potassium amyl xanthate) primarily adsorbed onto carrollite, and PMA had a negligible effect on carrollite's wettability. These results indicate that PMA is an effective depressant for muscovite, enabling the separation of carrollite, which prompted further mechanistic analysis of its adsorption behavior. Firstly, FTIR spectroscopy detected chemisorption of carboxyl groups onto muscovite, confirmed by the carboxylate stretching vibration at 1609.86 cm⁻¹ . Secondly, DFT simulations and XPS analyses revealed that the carboxyl groups of PMA were deprotonated and formed ionic bonds with surface aluminum sites. The proposed mechanism suggests that PMA forms a hydrophilic barrier layer on the muscovite surface, altering its wettability to depress flotation.
