A green depressant iminodisuccinic acid (IDS) for apatite-dolomite separation and its interaction mechanism

Mengyuan Zeng,Bingqiao Yang,Hanquan Zhang,Feifei Jia

Phosphate concentrates are widely used as primary sources in the production of fertilizers worldwide, but the efficient removal of dolomite from apatite in flotation relies heavily on selective depressants. Conventional apatite depressants such as sulfuric and phosphoric acid inevitably cause serious environmental pollution . It is urgent to explore green and efficient depressants to substitute conventional ones for the clean production of phosphate concentrate. In this work, iminodisuccinic acid (IDS) was explored as an efficient and environmental-friendly dolomite depressant in the direct flotation of apatite from dolomite. The depression performances were evaluated by micro-flotation and the interaction mechanism was revealed through adsorption capacity, Microcalorimetry , Zeta potential , Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) measurements. Mico-flotation results showed that IDS selectively depressed dolomite but hardly affected apatite flotation, improving the separation efficiency and upgrading the quality of apatite concentrates successfully. Mechanism study demonstrated that IDS preferentially adsorbed on dolomite due to its higher affinity to Mg sites on dolomite. IDS was dominantly chelated with Mg sites to form octahedral complexing structure via the coordination of COO − with Mg sites. While IDS was weakly adsorbed on apatite thought weak hydrogen bond between F sits of apatite with carboxyl within IDS. The pre-adsorption of IDS impeded NaOL adsorption on dolomite, but didn’t influence the NaOL adsorption on apatite. The work proved that IDS could be used as a green and selective dolomite depressant for the clean flotation of apatite from dolomite, which is of great importance for the sustainable production of fertilizer.

Facile Two-Step Deposition of Calcium Oxalate Film on Dolomite to Improve Acid Rain Resistance

Jianrui Zha,Yaoqi Gu,Shuya Wei,Huarui Han,Feng Wang,Qinglin Ma

The deposition of a calcium oxalate layer on dolomite demonstrates potential application in stone culture heritage conservation. However, due to insufficient coverage and the presence of cracks, the film’s usefulness is restricted. In this investigation, we used a simple two-step procedure to create a cohesive and uncracked film. The findings show that the protective layer provides better coverage of the dolomite surface without causing cracks and significantly improves acid resistance. Furthermore, after the simple two-step treatment, the color and adhesive strength of dolomite substrates remained nearly unchanged. Keywords:calcium oxalate;two-step deposition;stone conservation;dolomite

Aluminium-Modified sodium silicate as a selective depressant in Fluorite-Dolomite Flotation: Experimental and DFT analysis

Lijia Zhu,Yimin Zhu,Wenliang Xiong,Zheng Zhou,Peng Gao,Yuexin Han

Metal ions, naturally present in flotation pulp, are commonly employed in flotation reagents, serving as vital reagents in mineral separation processes. This study investigated the impact of ASS, a blend of AlCl 3 , sulfuric acid, and sodium silicate (SS), on the flotation separation efficiency of fluorite from dolomite, as well as the underlying interaction mechanism. Micro flotation tests revealed that ASS significantly decreased the flotation recovery of dolomite while exerting negligible influence on that of fluorite. The difference in flotation recovery rates among the two minerals reached 92.00 % with the addition of 103 mg/L of ASS. The artificial mixed mineral flotation tests were also carried out, the recovery rate and grade of F in the concentrate were 86.47 % and 42.79 %, respectively. The formation of the metal complex ASS, resulting from the combination of Al with Si(OH) 4 , facilitated the adsorption of their hydrolysis products on the surface of dolomite. Within the flotation pulp system, the Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ on the dolomite surface selectively interact with the –OH groups in ASS. At the same time, the Al 3+ in ASS selectively bonds with the O atom of the carbonate group exposed on the dolomite surface. This interaction promotes the adsorption of ASS onto the dolomite surface, thereby hindering the adsorption of sodium oleate. The fluorite surface exhibited weaker interactions with ASS, leading to more sodium oleate adsorbed on the surface of fluorite, thereby increasing the hydrophobicity of the fluorite particles, which floated up. As a result, the selective adsorption of the reagents facilitated the flotation separation of fluorite from dolomite.

Selective adsorption of a high-performance depressant onto dolomite causing effective flotation separation of magnesite from dolomite

Bin Yang,Donghui Wang,Shaohang Cao,Wanzhong Yin,Jiwei Xue,Zhanglei Zhu,Yafeng Fu,Jin Yao

This research focused on the adsorption features and depression mechanism of 1-hydroxyethylene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) used as a novel dolomite depressant on dolomite and magnesite surfaces, to extend the application of HEDP for the selective flotation of magnesite from dolomite. The depression impacts of HEDP on the flotation behaviors of the two minerals were investigated through micro-flotation tests. The flotation results indicated that, when sodium oleate (NaOl) was used as the collector, HEDP displayed an outstanding depression effect on the dolomite flotation, whereas it had only a slight influence on the magnesite flotation. Dolomite and magnesite could be efficiently separated at approximately pH 10 with a reagent scheme of 200 mg/L HEDP and 120 mg/L NaOl. The selective depression mechanism of HEDP for dolomite was revealed using contact angle, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), zeta potential, and infrared spectrum (IR) analyses. The results from the contact angle tests indicated that HEDP selectively reduced the surface hydrophobicity of dolomite in the NaOl system. Besides, zeta-potential measurements and IR analyses revealed that the addition of HEDP prior to NaOl had no significant impact on the adsorption of NaOl onto magnesite; however, this addition strongly prevented NaOl from being adsorbed onto dolomite, resulting in a significant difference in the flotation performances of the two minerals. Furthermore, crystal chemistry calculations and XPS analyses confirmed that the strong adsorption of HEDP on the dolomite surface could be attributed to the interaction between the HEDP electron-rich groups and the calcium species exposed to dolomite. Thus, HEDP could be used as a high-performance depressant for the dolomite flotation to realize the decalcification of the magnesite flotation.

Effect of Sodium Pyrophosphate on the Reverse Flotation of Dolomite from Apatite

Yanfei Chen,Qiming Feng,Guofan Zhang,Dezhi Liu,Runzhe Liu

In this study, the effect of sodium pyrophosphate (NaPP) on the separation of apatite from dolomite by flotation was systematically investigated. Flotation results revealed that NaPP could selectively depress the flotation of apatite, thus realizing the separation of apatite from dolomite. Further, the selective depression mechanism of NaPP was studied through zeta potential measurements, contact angle measurements, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The results demonstrated that the adsorption of sodium oleate (NaOL) onto apatite surface was depressed by the preferential interaction of NaPP with active Ca sites. For dolomite, while the presence of NaPP hindered the interaction of NaOL with active Ca sites, it appeared to enhance the reactivity with active Mg sites. Thus, the adsorption of NaOL onto dolomite surface was hardly influenced. In this way, the separation of apatite from dolomite was achieved. Keywords:sodium pyrophosphate;flotation;depression;apatite;dolomite

Effects of common ions on the flotation of fluorapatite and dolomite with oleate collector

Wenxuan Huang,Wenbiao Liu,Wenlin Zhong,Xiaopeng Chi,Feng Rao

In this study, the effects of common ions, especially Ca 2+ , on the reverse flotation of fluorapatite and dolomite in acidic conditions with NaOL collector were investigated using micro-flotation, zeta potential, contact angle, adsorption analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory-based first principal calculations. It is found that the dolomite flotation recovery was enhanced and the fluorapatite flotation was depressed by the addition of CaCl 2 at pH 5. For dolomite, in the presence of CaCl 2 , the solubility of metal ions was increased, especially for Ca 2+ . The Ca and Mg sites exposed on the dolomite surface, increased the NaOL adsorption, thus, enhancing the dolomite flotation. However, the formation of Ca(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 species on fluorapatite surface inhibit its flotation.

Mechanochemical dolomite accurately modulating the activity of newly formed Fe-hydroxide for superior and stable arsenic removal

Zhenlei Wang,Yinxing Zhao,Tingting Zhang,Sizhe Lai,Qiwu Zhang,Yunliang Zhao

Arsenic (As) contamination in industrial wastewater on a large scale has posed a enormous threat to ecological security in recent decades. However, a key challenge at present is the efficient and cost-effective removal of As contamination, as Fe in the As removal process cannot quickly and stably form an active phase with high activity for arsenic removal. Here, we propose a strategy to use mechanical activation of dolomite to regulate the formation of newly formed Fe-hydroxide from Fe(II) with high arsenic-removal activity, while stably regulating the pH of water in the near-neutral range, thereby substantially improving the removal efficiency as well as the stability of Fe(II) for As. Activated dolomite can significantly enhance the oxidation rate of Fe(II) in water, and synergistically remove As contamination over 99.5 % of water with an initial concentration of 50 mg/L within 2 h, far superior to the performance of single Fe(II) or dolomite&Fe(II). The simulation and characterisation results reveal that in the presence of activated dolomite, the solution pH as well as the oxidation rate of Fe(II) are effectively regulated, which promotes the As in the solution to be significantly immobilised on the surface of activated dolomite as a ternary precipitate of Ca/Mg-Fe-As, conducive to the stability of the enhanced As removal precipitation. This study provides new insights into the role of carbonate mineral materials in As transformation, which is important for the efficient and cost-effective purification of As contamination in water.

Selective flotation separation of smithsonite from dolomite by using sodium hexametaphosphate as a depressant

Li Wang,Lingfeng Shen,Wei Sun,Xiangfeng Zhang,Ye Zhang,Yanhong Wang

In this study, a depressant sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) was introduced for the flotation separation of smithsonite from dolomite using mixed benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) and sodium oleate (NaOL) as the collectors. Micro-flotation experiments were conducted to investigate the flotation behavior of smithsonite and dolomite in the absence and presence of SHMP. Furthermore, the depression mechanism of the SHMP was unraveled by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, and flotation solution chemistry . The flotation results showed that the recovery of dolomite decreased from 26.63% to 2.25% when the addition of SHMP in the flotation system increased from 0 to 50 g/t, while the smithsonite recovery exhibited a slight increase from 91.05% to 93.10%, which improved the separation effect greatly. FTIR measurements and XPS analysis revealed that the SHMP was chemically adsorbed on the dolomite surface in the form of hydrophilic complexes with Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ , thus depressing adsorption of the mixed BHA/NaOL. Flotation solution chemistry analysis suggested that Zn 2+ could form ZnCO 3 on the surface of the dolomite leading to the transformation of the dolomite surface to the smithsonite surface. And SHMP could form hydrophilic complexes with Ca and Mg sites on the dolomite surface, thus depressing the adsorption of BHA/NaOL on the transformed dolomite surface.

Effective flotation separation of apatite from dolomite using a new eco-friendly depressant gallic acid

Shengzong Lan,Peilun Shen,Qifang Zheng,Lidong Qiao,Liuyang Dong,Dianwen Liu

Apatite and dolomite present challenges in their separation due to their similar surface chemistry. To achieve flotation separation of apatite and dolomite, depressants are required, but conventional depressants have several drawbacks. Hence, the development of effective and environmentally friendly depressants is of great importance. This study aimed to investigate the depressive effect of gallic acid (GA) on the flotation separation of apatite from dolomite using sodium oleate (NaOL) as the collector. The floatability of apatite and dolomite was examined through micro-flotation. The findings revealed that, with 1.0 × 10−4 mol L−1 NaOL, the recovery rates of apatite and dolomite were 86.29% and 77.42%, respectively. After introducing 2.0 × 10−4 mol L−1 GA, the recovery of apatite remained at 83.42%, while that of dolomite drastically decreased to only 14.33%. The selective depression mechanism of GA in the flotation separation of apatite from dolomite was investigated using various techniques, including zeta potential, contact angle, UV-vis, FTIR, XPS, ToF-SIMS, and AFM analyses. The results demonstrated that GA increased the hydrophilicity of the dolomite surface and impeded the adsorption of NaOL on that surface without affecting the apatite. GA was found to bind to Ca and Mg sites on the dolomite surface through –OH and –COOH groups. The adsorption of GA on the dolomite surface was substantial, with the adsorption height primarily concentrated in the range of 10–30 nm. GA exhibited selective depression on dolomite, thus, enabling successful flotation separation of apatite from dolomite.

Effects of Sodium Silicate on Flotation Separation of Sphalerite and Dolomite and Its Mechanism

Longqian Ni,Jinfang Lv,Lingyu Kong,Longwei Qin

Sphalerite often co-exists with dolomite, a carbonate mineral containing calcium and magnesium. In the flotation process of sphalerite, dolomite entering into the concentrate will have a considerable negative impact on the subsequent smelting. Therefore, the effects of sodium silicate on the flotation separation of sphalerite and dolomite and its mechanism were investigated in this study. It was found that alkaline conditions and the addition of sodium silicate were conducive to the flotation separation of sphalerite and dolomite. Under alkaline conditions, sodium silicate improved the hydrophobicity of sphalerite and the slurry turbidity. The yield stress and apparent viscosity were significantly reduced when dolomite was present in slurry. In addition, the surface electrical properties of dolomite shifted from positive to negative with an increase in the dosage of sodium silicate at pH 11, leading to electrostatic repulsion between sphalerite and dolomite. EDLVO results indicated that the total interaction energy between dolomite and sphalerite particles was repulsive when sodium silicate was present. This study provided a theoretical basis for the flotation separation of sphalerite and dolomite.

Sodium tripolyphosphate as a selective depressant for separating magnesite from dolomite and its depression mechanism

Jin Yao,Bin Yang,Keqiang Chen,Haoran Sun,Zhanglei Zhu,Wanzhong Yin,Ningbo Song,Qiuyue Sheng

Efficient separation of magnesite from dolomite remains challenging owing to the similar floatability of the two minerals. Therefore, understanding the adsorption behaviors of surfactants (depressants and collectors) on their surfaces is essential for improving separation efficiency. In this study, the ability of sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) to separate magnesite from dolomite was evaluated in sodium oleate (NaOl) systems, with an emphasis on its effect on the depression of dolomite. The mechanisms underlying the differential adsorption and depression of STPP were investigated through surface analyses, namely Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , zeta-potential analysis, adsorption-quantity analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The flotation results indicated that STPP facilitated the removal of dolomite from magnesite in the NaOl system because it significantly depressed dolomite, whereas its effect on magnesite was negligible. Surface analyses revealed that the preferential adsorption of STPP on dolomite was due to the interaction between the –PO 4 tetrahedra of STPP and Ca sites. Furthermore, in the presence of STPP, small amounts of NaOl were adsorbed onto dolomite, inhibiting the flotation of dolomite. However, substantial amounts of NaOl were adsorbed onto magnesite, maintaining the good floatability of magnesite. Therefore, STPP can be considered as a promising depressant for separating magnesite from dolomite via direct flotation.

Innovative utilization of 2-(4-Butoxyphenyl)acetohydroxamic acid as collector for the selective separation of rhodochrosite from calcite and dolomite

Kuixin Cui,Nan Duan,Shengming Jin

A novel collector 2-(4-Butoxyphenyl)acetohydroxamic acid (BAHA) was actively considered in the flotation of rhodochrosite. Flotation behaviors and BAHA adsorption concerning rhodochrosite, calcite and dolomite were systematacially investigated through microflotation tests, adsorption experiments, zeta potential measurements, FTIR and XPS analyses. Microflotation results showed that rhodochrosite performed a better floatability than calcite and dolomite at pH 8.0–10.0. Also, the adsorption amounts of BAHA collector on the rhodochrosite surface were obviously greater than those of calcite and dolomite. The results of zeta potential, FTIR and XPS analyses indicated that BAHA adsorbed onto rhodochrosite surfaces through chemisorption, electrostatic attraction and intermolecular hydrogen bonding, chemisorption and electrostatic attraction for calcite, and only chemisorption for dolomite. The interaction mechanisms between BAHA collector and mineral surfaces were responsible for the differences in the BAHA adsorption and floatability between rhodochrosite and two gangues. The flotation separation tests of three minerals confirmed that the rhodochrosite concentrate with Mn grade of 24.64% and recovery of 87.94% could be obtained. BAHA is a high selective collector and can realize the flotation separation of rhodochrosite against dolomite and calcite.
