Fast microwave-assisted catalytic pyrolysis (fMACP) of soapstock for hydrocarbon-rich bio-oil using different catalysts was investigated in this study. Effects of catalyst, pyrolysis temperature and catalyst to feed ratio on product fractional yields and chemical composition were studied. Experimental results indicated that the use of catalyst increased the relative content of hydrocarbons and selectivity of aromatics. Moreover, HZSM-5 catalyst enhanced the bio-oil yield. When HZSM-5 zeolite was used as a catalyst, 600 °C was the optimal pyrolysis temperature, which provides the maximum bio-oil yield and high content of hydrocarbons. At the cost of the decrease of bio-oil yield, the increase of catalyst to feed ratio increased the relative content of hydrocarbons from 65.41% to 88.59% and selectivity of aromatics from 5.99% to 29.46%. In addition, the analytical results of bio-char show that bio-char with micropore structure and high contents of the essential plant nutrients and micronutrients can be used as a soil amendment to improve soil productivity.

A ZSM-5/SiC composite catalyst was synthesized and characterized by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy in this study. The composite catalyst had the characteristics of ZSM-5 and SiC, and the surface of SiC grew evenly with a layer of ZSM-5. The effect of the composite catalyst on the product distribution and chemical composition in a co-pyrolysis downdraft system was investigated. In a down system with a catalytic temperature of 450 °C, a feed-to-catalyst ratio of 2:1, and a soybean-soapstock-to-straw ratio of 1:1, the proportions of alkanes, olefins, aromatics, and phenoxy compounds were 6.82%, 4.5%, 73.56% and 11.11%, respectively. The composite catalyst combined the catalytic performance of ZSM-5 and SiC, increasing the proportion of aromatics and decreasing the proportion of oxygen-containing compound in the bio-oil. Moreover, the composite catalyst maintained its activity after reusing several times.

In view of the poor selectivity of aromatic hydrocarbons in bio-oil from biomass pyrolysis and the high pressure drop and rapid coking and deactivation of catalyst in industrial scale, a microwave-driven HZSM-5@SiC ceramic foam has been constructed, and applied to the ex-situ catalytic fast pyrolysis of soapstock to improve the content of aromatic hydrocarbons in bio-oil. The effects of different catalysts and heating modes and mass ratios of HZSM-5@SiC ceramic foam to soapstock on the distribution of pyrolysis products have been investigated. In addition, combined with the comparison of microwave and electric heating, the deactivation characteristics of HZSM-5@SiC ceramic foam have been studied. Finally, the process of preparing aromatic oil by microwave-driven catalytic pyrolysis of soapstock was discussed. Experimental results indicate that compared with HZSM-5, HZSM-5@SiC ceramic foam has a higher yield of bio-oil and higher aromatization activity. Under microwave heating, the relative content of aromatic hydrocarbons increases from 25.18% to 100% when the mass ratio of HZSM-5@SiC ceramic foam to soapstock increases from 0:1 to 1:1. Compared with electric heating catalysis, HZSM-5@SiC ceramic foam has the lowest yield of coke under microwave heating. After five consecutive uses, it still maintains more than 90% catalytic activity and has higher stability, which provides a scientific basis for the pilot scale experiments of soapstock catalytic pyrolysis.

Polyglycerol fatty acid ester (PGFE) is one kind of non-ionic biosurfactant with excellent emulsifying property, physicochemical stability, and biodegradability. In this work, a low-cost liquid lipase Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) was used as an eco-friendly biocatalyst to promote the esterification of polyglycerol-3 (PG3) and fatty acids (FA) from soybean oil waste soapstock for PGFE production. Effects of lipase load (0.1–0.6 wt%), reaction temperature (50–100 ℃), substrate ratio of PG3 to FA (1.0:1–2.0:1, mol/mol), and time (0.5–12 h) on the esterification were evaluated and optimized by central composite design. The high FA conversion (84.31%) was obtained under the optimal conditions: 0.54 wt% lipase load, 1.5:1 molar ratio of PG3 to FA, 84 °C, and 5.8 h. In PGFE products, the contents of mono-ester, di-ester, and tri-ester were 43.77%, 39.03%, and 17.20%, respectively. Additionally, PGFE showed excellent in vitro antioxidant efficiency and decreased 62% peroxide value in soybean oil system after 21 h of storage at 105 ℃. Graphical abstract

Soap stocks are by-products obtained during the refining process of vegetable oil, and are mainly feedstocks to produce acidified oil. In this work, an efficient process was developed to convert soap stock into a high-quality biofuel with low impurity content. A combination of acidification and catalytic cracking reactions employed as pretreatment was investigated to decrease the impurity content in the soap stock feedstock for obtaining a value-added biofuel. A high olefin content (approximately 47%) pyrolytic oil was obtained during the pretreatment. For further improvement of the cold flow properties, hydro-isomerization of pyrolytic oil for the formation of iso-alkanes over the Ce–Pt/SAPO-11and Ce–Pt/ZSM-5 catalysts was then carried out. The isomerization reaction temperature could be decreased to 320 °C because of the approximately 47% olefin content. The cold filter plugging point (CFPP) of the resulting product could be obtained at −11 °C, and the sulfur content could be decreased to lower than 10 ppm, which could meet the EN and ASTM specifications.
