A skin-inspired durable de-icing surface with boosting interfacial cracks

Yang Qiucheng,Yang Jinlong,Hu Yuhao,Niu Xiaopeng,Liu Zhenda,Zou Jian,Guo Junchang,Xiong Hao,Gu Xingshi,Yang Li,Yu Fanfei,Zhu Shunpeng,Ye Ming,Yi Xian,Deng Xu

Fracture-based interfacial breakage has shown promise in efficiently removing ice accretion. Here, intrigued by the response of human skin to stress-induced deformation, we present a strategy to design tough-skin de-icing surfaces (TSDSs) that actively manipulate crack-induced ice-substrate interfacial breakage during ice removal. This design leverages the surface instability of thin films to generate extensive wrinkling at the ice-substrate interface, which serves as crack initiation sites. We demonstrate efficient ice shedding by creating wrinkles at two length scales, macro wrinkles for actively initiate the cracks at the rim of ice and micro wrinkles for further promoting stress concentration at the ice-substrate interface. The TSDS (τ < 10 kPa) displays excellent durability and weather resistance, achieving a large-area ice self-shedding effect solely through gravity. The universality of the proposed mechanism is verified on multiple materials and potential applications. This design concept offers valuable insights into creating durable de-icing materials with enhanced ice-shedding properties.

Skin-inspired tactile sensor based on gradient pore structure enable broad range response and ultrahigh pressure resolution

Shuai Wang,Feng Gao,Yunxia Hu,Shichao Zhang,Huiming Shang,Chuanyang Ge,Biying Tan,Xin Zhang,Jia Zhang,PingAn Hu

Tactile sensing is highly essential for the dexterous manipulation of robots. Nevertheless, the existed tactile sensors fail to realize high sensitivity and pressure resolution in a large pressure range, simultaneously. To concern this issue, we present a skin-structure inspired strategy to prepare gradient pore microstructure (GPS) films which thus have gradient elastic modulus along film thickness direction, similar to the dermis of skin. The tactile sensors made of this GPS films show an improved sensitivity of 3.74 kPa −1 , an ultrahigh pressure resolution of 0.06% and broad range response of 0–800 kPa because of high structural compressibility and stress adaptation characteristics of GPS film. Meanwhile, the sensors achieve a fast response time of 15 ms and a low detection limit of 1.65 Pa as well as good cycle stability. Further, an 8 × 8 sensors array shows a performance of accurate real-time pressure mapping. Therefore, GPS-based sensors provide a new avenue to realize high-performance tactile perception in the artificial intelligence equipment.

S. Song,G. Xu,B. Wang,D. Liu,Z. Ren,J. Gu,H. Wei,L. Zhang,J. Zhao,Y. Li

Effective infrared (IR) modulation is crucial for engineered technologies, such as energy-efficient buildings, personal thermal management, multiple electronic instruments, adaptive thermal camouflage and smart thermoregulation. The static control occupies most portion in the past, to explore the materials that could dynamically modulate IR irradiation has emerged as an urgent scientific challenge. Drawing inspiration from squid skin, a dynamic IR modulator (Au-SEBS membrane) consisting of IR-reflective metal layer and IR-transparent elastomer matrix has been developed. Under a simple mechanical strain, the IR optical performance of Au-SEBS membrane including reflectance, transmittance, and absorptance alters, which is attributed to the generating microcracks at the metal layer. The results demonstrate that the reflectance varies from 97% to 37%, whereas 3%–51% for transmittance and 0%–12% for absorptance at the wavelength range of 2.5–25 μm. Additionally, the Au-SEBS membrane exhibits a distinctive thermal-healed ability due to the thermoplastic elastomer characteristic of SEBS copolymer . The material features a simple actuation mechanism, straightforward manipulate, fast response, and robust mechanical properties , which exhibits a promising potential for adaptive thermal camouflage, thermal management, and other related technologies that regulate the IR irradiation.

Tough Trilayer Composite Hydrogel Inspired by Crocodile Skin Structure for Flexible Sensors

Zijian Gao,Yihan Guo,Shengyu Sun,Xin Guan,Yuan Zhang,Zhixu Yun,Yongqi Yang,Jian Sun,Hailun Ren,Huajing Gao

As a high-performance polymer material, conductive hydrogels are widely employed in the fields of motion monitoring, electronic skin, and energy storage devices, which rely on flexible materials, including hydrogel, elastomer, and composite hydrogel. However, preparing a composite hydrogel with excellent mechanical properties is a great challenge. Inspired by the structure of crocodile skin, a trilayer structure conductive composite hydrogel was prepared. The three layers were Ecoflex elastomer, poly(acrylamide-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PAAm-HEMA) hydrogel, and graphene/2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (G/PHEMA) hydrogel, respectively. Covalent bonds were generated by a photochemical reaction between elastomer Eco and the P(AAm-HEMA) hydrogel. Covalent bonds were also formed between the P(AAm-HEMA) hydrogel and G/PHEMA hydrogel by the chemical reaction of N,N′-methylenebis(2-propenamide), which worked as cross-linking agent; hydrogen bonding between these two hydrogels also formed. These physical and chemical interactions provided firm bonding between the layers and prevented interlayer slippage under an external force. The G/PHEMA-P(AAm-HEMA)-Eco composite hydrogel possessed high fracture stress and elongation at break of up to 2.1 MPa and 1305%, respectively. The conductivity of 0.028 S/m was attributed to the incorporation of graphene in the network of the G/PHEMA hydrogel. Based on the excellent mechanical properties and electrical conductivity, this composite hydrogel was applied as a flexible sensor to detect human motion signals. These results indicate that the trilayer G/PHEMA-P(AAm-HEMA)-Eco composite hydrogel represents a promising material, paving the way for innovative applications in next-generation flexible electronic devices.

Skin-inspired quadruple tactile sensors integrated on a robot hand enable object recognition

Guozhen Li,Shiqiang Liu,Liangqi Wang,Rong Zhu

Robot hands with tactile perception can improve the safety of object manipulation and also improve the accuracy of object identification. Here, we report the integration of quadruple tactile sensors onto a robot hand to enable precise object recognition through grasping. Our quadruple tactile sensor consists of a skin-inspired multilayer microstructure. It works as thermoreceptor with the ability to perceive thermal conductivity of a material, measure contact pressure, as well as sense object temperature and environment temperature simultaneously and independently. By combining tactile sensing information and machine learning, our smart hand has the capability to precisely recognize different shapes, sizes, and materials in a diverse set of objects. We further apply our smart hand to the task of garbage sorting and demonstrate a classification accuracy of 94% in recognizing seven types of garbage.

A skin-inspired biomimetic strategy to fabricate cellulose enhanced antibacterial hydrogels as strain sensors

Junyu Jian,Yitong Xie,Shishuai Gao,Yu Sun,Chenhuan Lai,Jifu Wang,Chunpeng Wang,Fuxiang Chu,Daihui Zhang

With the development of wearable devices, the fabrication of strong, tough, antibacterial, and conductive hydrogels for sensor applications is necessary but remains challenging. Here, a skin-inspired biomimetic strategy integrated with in-situ reduction has been proposed. The self-assembly of cellulose to generate a cellulose skeleton was essential to realize the biomimetic structural design. Furthermore, in-situ generation of silver nanoparticles on the skeleton was easily achieved by a heating process. This process not only offered the excellent antibacterial property to hydrogels, but also improved the mechanical properties of hydrogels due to the elimination of negative effect of silver nanoparticles aggregation. The highest tensile strength and toughness could reach 2.0 MPa and 11.95 MJ/m 3 , respectively. Moreover, a high detection range (up to 1300%) and sensitivity (gauge factor = 4.4) was observed as the strain sensors. This study provides a new horizon to fabricate strong, tough and functional hydrogels for various applications in the future.

Penguin Skin-Inspired, Nanoparticle-Reinforced Hydrogels for Extreme Environment-Resistant Piezoionic Generation and Sensing

Siyu Zheng,Afei Liu,Xianhui Zhang,Wenhui Wu,Lihui Chen,Chunmei Lai,Yuekun Lai,Kai Liu

Most hydrogels rely heavily on cryoprotectants to enhance their anti-freezing capabilities; however, this approach is often accompanied by disadvantages such as altered network structures and the risk of cryoprotectant leakage in aqueous conditions. Given these challenges, an environmentally resilient diode-like hydrogel is developed, featuring a double-layer coating design inspired by the physiological characteristics of penguins. This design is achieved through plasma treatment and immersion in 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane/butyl acetate and perfluoropolyether carboxylic acid/butyl acetate solutions, constructing a double-layer coating with stable interfacial strength. The coating not only enhances anti-dehydration performance but also imparts anti-freezing properties via N,N-dimethylformamide solution. By carefully regulating the coating thickness and polymerization duration, it has optimized the mechanical and electrical attributes of hydrogel, culminating in robust performance even at −80 °C. The hydrogel exhibits exceptional water retention capabilities, with a mere 33.4% water loss rate following 7 days of air drying. Moreover, the hydrogel demonstrates stable piezoionic output performance across various low-temperature environments, with tensile and compressive strengths of 1156 kPa and 3.45 MPa, respectively. This study presents a novel solution for the application of conductive hydrogels in smart wearable devices, underscoring their potential for use in extreme environments.

Biological skin-inspired damage warning and self-healing thermoelectric aerogel fiber via coaxial wet spinning for wearable temperature sensing

Hualing He,Qing Jiang,Yuhang Wan,Md Hasib Mia,Xueru Qu,Mi Zhou,Xingyu He,Xiaoqian Li,Min Hong,Zhicai Yu,Siqi Huo

Biopolymer-based temperature-sensing fibers are increasingly employed to realize the eco-friendly concept of wearable electronics. However, keeping their long-term development remains challenging due to limited mechanical robustness and poor environmental tolerance. Herein, a bionic autonomous self-healing thermoelectric (TE) aerogel fiber with visual damage warning function (STDF) inspired by biological skin was prepared via a coaxial wet spinning strategy, which yielded a core-shell heterogeneous structure with a protective sheath with an intrinsic self-healing ability and a temperature-sensing core layer. The core layer of STDF, composed of flexible thermoplastic polyurethane embedded with rigid Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, effectively minimizes disruptions in continuous conductive pathways during repeated extreme bending. Featuring a synergistic network of reversible hydrogen bonds and dynamic Schiff-base linkages constructed among oxidized alginate, sericin, and tannic acid, the fractured STDF aerogel fiber exhibits exceptional water-responsive self-healing efficiency (97.51% stress recovery). Moreover, the visual damage location in STDF fiber is enabled through a coloration reaction at the damaged interface between the Fe 2+ ions and 1,10-phenanthroline incorporated into the core and sheath layers, respectively. Furthermore, the resultant STDF demonstrates a wide-range temperature-sensing performance at 100–500°C and an ultrasensitive alarm response time (within 2 s) when encountering fires. This work sheds new light on the design of bionic temperature sensing fibers with environment-adaptive self-healing and damage warning abilities for improved reliability and durability in real-world wearable application scenarios.
