Water-based polymers have been widely used in coating materials, but their durability and service life are often greatly reduced due to macroscopic damage or cracking caused by external forces. In this paper, poly(propylene glycol) terminated with ortho-amiomethylphenyl diboronic acid (AMPBA-PPG) and cross-linked polymer containing boroxine (CLP-boroxine) were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution. Then the CLP-boroxine was introduced into waterborne polyurethane (WPU) to prepare AMPBA-PPG/WPU composite emulsion for leather finishing and CLP-boroxine/WPU composite film. The self-healing characterization results showed that the self-healing efficiency of the 15 wt% CLP-boroxine/WPU film was as high as 93.6% after only 4 h of water stimulation at room temperature. Compared with neat WPU finished leather, the leather samples finished with AMPBA-PPG/WPU exhibited more excellent wear-resistance. More importantly, the leather coating finished with AMPBA-PPG/WPU still showed nice wear-resistance even after wear and self-healing treatment. These results are attributed to that the hydrogen bonds between AMPBA-PPG and WPU, WPU, and WPU, and the dynamic reversible covalent bonds in AMPBA-PPG can improve/increase the self-healing efficiency of the composite coating. In addition, the boron hydroxyl groups in AMPBA-PPG could also react with the hydroxyl groups on the leather surface, thereby further improving the wear-resistance of the leather coating. Graphical abstract Dynamic boronate ester bonds can not only endow WPU excellent self-healing properties but also improve wear-resistance of its leather coating.

Antimicrobial coating is of great important in leather finishing. Herein, we report a newly synthesized polyurethane with zwitterionic sulfobetaine side groups and evaluate their performance in the antifouling leather coatings. The microstructure of the synthesized zwitterionic polyurethane (iNPU) films has been examined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) in order to understand how it influences the mechanical and surface properties. Our results show that introduction of zwitterionic groups into polyurethane can markedly increase the degree of micro-phase separation between the hard and soft segments of the PU chains since the incorporated zwitterionic group leads to more hydrogen bonding and polar interactions, making the hard components to be more thermodynamically incompatible with the soft segments. As the content of the incorporated zwitterionic content increases, the ordered structure in PU chains is reduced, and the micro-phase separation degree is increased. Therefore, the tensile strength and elongation at break of the iNPU films are significantly improved. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) results further indicate that the Tg of the iNPU coatings decreases, and the deformability greatly increases at a higher content of zwitterionic group. Water contact angle (WCA) measurements reveal the improved surface wetting property due to the presence of zwitterionic group. The antibacterial testing shows that the iNPU coated leather surfaces exhibit reasonably good anti-mold adhesion performance, although the iNPU films do not show apparent contact-killing antibacterial property against E. coli and S. aureus. The present zwitterionic polyurethane is thus can be potentially used as antimicrobial adhesive leather coating materials.

Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) has been broadly used as adhesive and coating materials in many applications. In this work, the graphene oxide-silica (GOSI) nanocomposites, used as nanofillers in the WPU matrix, were produced by functionalizing graphene oxide with epoxy groups and nanosilica with amine groups using silane terminated coupling agents. The nanocomposite surface structures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The polymer nanocomposite films show the excellent improvement in the mechanical and thermal properties. In the fractured surface study of the composite films by SEM, it was observed that the agglomeration of GO appears while the GOSI is uniformly distributed in the WPU matrix. Furthermore, the WPU/GOSI have regained the maximum tensile strength properties after two weeks of hydrolysis. The GOSI nanocomposites have enhanced interfacial crosslinking with the WPU matrix which is the prime reason for such development in the mechanical properties . The screen printing method was illustrated to cast the thin and transparent layer WPU nanocomposites on the leather surfaces. The WPU/GOSI coatings exhibit outstanding tear resistance, surface adhesiveness, and abrasion resistance properties. This approach of using GOSI composites as nanofiller in the polymer matrix may pave a novel path for surface coating strategies.

A waterborne nanocomposite leather finishing system was developed through a two-step fabrication strategy. First, layered double hydroxide (LDH/hydrotalcite) nanosheets were electrostatically assembled onto aramid nanofibers (ANF) to construct a reinforced LDH@ANF heterostructure. Then, a multifunctional copolymer (H-P) was synthesized via surfactant-free emulsion polymerization using sodium p-styrene sulfonate (SSS) as both monomer and emulsifying agent. The integration of LDH@ANF as a nano-reinforcement phase into the H-P matrix yielded stable nanocomposite emulsions (LDH@ANF/H-P) with exceptional leather finishing capabilities. The nanocomposite coating simultaneously endowed sheepskin with superior abrasion resistance (COF: 0.13), hydrophobicity (contact angle: 108° ± 2.9°), thermal insulation (thermal conductivity: 0.073 W/m K) and flame retardancy. Compared to pure H-P film, the tensile strength and elongation at break of the LDH@ANF/H-P film increased by 5.32 MPa and 377.28%, respectively, attributed to the synergistic effects of LDH nanosheets and ANF. Moreover, the pure H-P exhibited 38% higher abrasion resistance than commercial NP-87 polymer, while the nanocomposite coating further reduced the surface abrasion by 68% through hierarchical energy dissipation mechanisms.

This study presents a solvent-free, facile synthesis of a bio-based green antibacterial agent and aromatic monomer methacrylated vanillin (MV) using vanillin. The resulting MV not only imparted antibacterial properties to coatings layered on leather, but could also be employed as a green alternative to petroleum-based carcinogen styrene (St). Herein, MV was copolymerized with butyl acrylate (BA) to obtain waterborne bio-based P(MV–BA) miniemulsion via miniemulsion polymerization. Subsequently, MXene nanosheets with excellent photothermal conversion performance and antibacterial properties, were introduced into the P(MV–BA) miniemulsion by ultrasonic dispersion. During the gradual solidification of P(MV–BA)/MXene nanocomposite miniemulsion on the leather surface, MXene gradually migrated to the surface of leather coatings due to the cavitation effect of ultrasonication and amphiphilicity of MXene, which prompted its full exposure to light and bacteria, exerting the maximum photothermal conversion efficiency and significant antibacterial efficacy. In particular, when the dosage of MXene nanosheets was 1.4 wt%, the surface temperature of P(MV–BA)/MXene nanocomposite miniemulsion-coated leather (PML) increased by about 15 °C in an outdoor environment during winter, and the antibacterial rate against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was nearly 100% under the simulated sunlight treatment for 30 min. Moreover, the introduction of MXene nanosheets increased the air permeability, water vapor permeability, and thermal stability of these coatings. This study provides a new insight into the preparation of novel, green, and waterborne bio-based nanocomposite coatings for leather, with desired warmth retention and antibacterial properties. It can not only realize zero-carbon heating based on sunlight in winter, reducing the use of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions, but also improve ability to fight off invasion by harmful bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms.
