There is a lack of viscosity enhancers for high-temperature and high-density solid-free completion solutions in high-temperature and high-pressure oil and gas reservoirs. To address the problem of insufficient temperature resistance of biopolymers and poor performance of conventional viscosifiers in high-temperature and high-density solid-free completion fluids, an anti-temperature viscosifiers for high-density solid free completion fluids was synthesized using N,N-dimethylacrylamide(DMAA), diallyldimethylammonium chloride(DMDAAC) and the amphoteric ion [2-(Methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium Hydroxide(SBMA) as the main monomers. FPOD has salt-responsive properties. With the increase of brine concentration, the degree of stretching of FPOD molecular chain increased and formed a network structure through intermolecular forces, which provided a viscosity increasing effect on the solution. FPOD has good temperature resistance. The apparent viscosity of 1 wt% FPOD in 1.75 g/cm 3 CaBr 2 brine was 37 mPa·s, and after aging at 150 °C, the viscosity was still 32.5 mPa·s. The performance of FPOD before and after aging is better than other viscosifiers. FPOD is simple to prepare and has good viscosity enhancement effect in high density solid-free brines. Moreover, FPOD is well-compatible with other treatment agents for completion fluids, and the HTHP filtration loss of the completion fluid system with 2 wt% FPOD added at 150 °C is only 5 mL. FPOD could solve the problem of insufficient high temperature resistance and viscosity increasing performance of viscosifiers in high density brine completion fluids, and provide a new technical approach to drilling high-temperature and high-pressure oil and gas reservoirs.

Supramolecular self-assembly of polymeric molecules for sharp-pH-sensitive (SPS) nanoparticles is an especially important application in biology. Here, amphiphilic polypeptide copolymers are synthesized and spontaneously assembled to micelles in aqueous solution, and protonation of the tertiary amine groups in the side-chain of the copolymer under weak acid causes the micelle disassembly, which is sharp-pH-sensitive, and the responsive pHs can be adjusted by adding salts. Size and morphologic change of the polymeric micelles are characterized by means of dynamic lighting scattering, transmission electron microscope (TEM), and atomic force microscope (AFM) in sequential pH alterations. It is found that the Hofmeister ions play a key factor in controlling the subtle interaction of different noncovalent bonds among polypeptide molecules during their self-assembly or disassembly. The physical property exploration of the SPS micelles may provide a new chance for the development of dynamic, complex nanostructures in various pH-responsive applications.

A novel hydrophobically associating polyampholytes of poly(AM/AA/AMQC12) were synthesized by the free radical copolymerization of acrylamide (AM), acrylic acid (AA), and dimethyldodecyl(2-acrylamidoethyl)ammonium bromide (AMQC12) in water without any surfactants (named AAQ series). The structures of polymers were confirmed by 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR. The molecular weight and polydispersity were obtained using gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The hydrophobically associated properties of polymer solution were characterized by rheology, steady-state fluorescence probe, and 1 H NMR relaxation time ( T
2 ). Isoelectric points (IEPs) of polymer solution were determined by the effect of pH on viscosity below critical association concentrations (cac), and the reduced viscosities of samples at IEPs were increased in the presence of NaCl. Moreover, the steady-shear viscosity of sample at IEP was also greatly enhanced in NaCl solutions when the polymer concentration is above the cac. Meantime, the storage modulus and the loss modulus of copolymers showed that the sample behaved as gel in salt media.

Conventional drilling fluid viscosity enhancers have poor anti-temperature and anti-salt properties, making it difficult to regulate the rheological properties of drilling fluids in the high-temperature, high-mineralisation environment of deep formations, which is prone to causing downhole accidents such as stuck drills and well-wall instability. In the present study, a salt-responsive amphiphilic hydrophobically attached polymer (PAADS) was synthesised by free-radical micellar polymerisation and used as a viscosity builder for saturated sodium chloride drilling fluids. The molecular structure and thermal stability were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance and thermogravimetric analysis . The results reveal that the molecular structure of PAADS is consistent with the expected target and has good thermal stability . The viscosity-increasing performance of PAADS in a saturated sodium chloride drilling fluid was evaluated according to the American Petroleum Institute standard. PAADS can effectively maintain the rheological performance of the drilling fluid under high-temperature and high-salt conditions, and the apparent viscosity retention rate of the saturated sodium chloride drilling fluid containing 2 wt% PAADS can be up to 47.5 % after 180 °C hot rolling. NaCl exhibits significant salt-responsive properties by affecting the hydrodynamic radius of PAADS molecules. In addition, PAADS solutions exhibit excellent shear dilution, viscoelasticity and stable internal space structure. This study provides new ideas for salt-resistant drilling fluid additives, which are of great significance for the efficient development of deep oil and gas resources.

Antibacterial surfaces that not only can kill bacteria but also can release the dead bacteria have become one of most promising antibacterial strategies, but the realization of high efficiency, rapid response and long-term reusability of such surfaces remains many challenges. Herein, we reported new antibacterial surfaces with high killing and release capabilities based on a salt-responsive brush recently developed by our group. These surfaces consist of two polymer brushes with two-layer architecture, where the upper-layer bactericidal brushes (poly[(trimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate chloride], polyMETAC or poly[2-(tert-butylamino)ethyl methacrylate], polyTA) were built on background layer of salt-responsive polyzwitterionic brush (poly(3-(dimethyl(4-vinylbenzyl) ammonio) propyl sulfonate), polyDVBAPS) via sequential surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization . By the combination in this manner, the bacteria attach/release function of polyDVBAPS and bactericidal function of polyMETAC/polyTA were successfully integrated, resulting in the smart surfaces which can reversibly kill and release bacteria in response to the switch between water and salt solution. Both two systems in this study, i.e. poly (DVBAPS-b-METAC) and poly(DVBAPS-b-TA), exhibit high bactericidal activity by killing more than 93% and highly efficient regeneration capability by rapidly releasing ∼90% of the attached bacteria. Specifically, such excellent antibacterial performance of poly(DVBAPS-b-TA) can be well retained even after four killing-release cycles, indicating the great potential in reusable biological materials and devices. Furthermore, the correlation between physicochemical properties of the two-layer brushes with their bactericidal efficiency and regenerative capability was also investigated and discussed.

Intelligent polymer nanocapsules that can not only encapsulate substances efficiently but also release them in a controllable manner hold great potential in many applications. To date, although intensive efforts have been made to develop intelligent polymer nanocapsules, how to construct the well-defined core/shell structure with high stability via a straightforward method remains a considerable challenge. In this work, the target novel zwitterionic nanocapsules (ZNCs) with a stable hollow structure were synthesized by inverse reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) miniemulsion interfacial polymerization. The shell gradually grew from the water/oil interface due to the interfacial polymerization, accompanied by the cross-linking of the polyzwitterionic networks, where the core/shell structure could be well-tuned by adjusting the precursor compositions. The resultant ZNCs exhibited a salt-/thermo-induced swelling behavior through the phase transition of the external zwitterionic polymers. To further investigate the functions of ZNCs, different substances, such as methyl orange and bovine serum albumin (BSA), were encapsulated into the ZNCs with a high encapsulation efficiency of 89.3 and 93.6%, respectively. Interestingly, the loaded substances can be controllably released in aqueous solution triggered by salt or temperature variations, and such responsiveness also can be utilized to bounce off the bacteria adhered on target surfaces. We believe that these designed salt- and thermo-responsive intelligent polymer nanocapsules with well-defined core/shell structures and antifouling surfaces should be a promising platform for biomedical and saline related applications.

Detecting and repairing coating damages at nanoscale or microscale are essential for metal corrosion protection. Here, we develop a smart anticorrosion coating with autonomous self-reporting and self-healing abilities by saline-responsive triggered polyaniline (PANi) nanocapsules containing a fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) fluorescent indicator and benzotriazidazole (BTA) corrosion inhibitor. Once the damaged coating is wet with the salt solution, the sodium ions penetrate the crack and react with PANi, causing a gating effect of PANi nanocapsules to be triggered and opened. This leads to the diffusion of molecules and expelling of the guest payload from the capsule mesopores. Therefore, the scratched FITC@PANi/Epoxy coatings express pronounced green fluorescence signals under UV light irradiation within only 30 min, highlighting the coating failure. Meanwhile, the microcracks can be promptly repaired with the BTA@PANi/Epoxy coatings, and their long-term anticorrosion properties are further extended under a NaCl solution, indicating the prolonged service lives of the coatings. Therefore, the salt-responsive release strategy with self-reporting and self-healing functions allows for timely corrosion warning, fast crack repair, and effective extension of barrier performance, which is appealing and of great importance in practical applications.

Stimuli-responsive materials with shape deformation properties play an important role in many fields such as artificial muscles, soft robots, and tissue engineering. Among them, stimuli-responsive hydrogels as actuators possessing shape deformation properties have been focused on. In this paper, a polyampholyte-based hydrogel with gradient pore construction is synthesized by a facile one-step random copolymerization, in which two sides of the reaction mold possess different hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity. The micro-Fourier transform infrared spectra prove the gradient distribution of chemical composition. Owing to the gradient pore construction and the ionic bonds, the polyampholyte-based hydrogel can rapidly change the shape when exposed to the environmental-friendly stimulus of water and recover to the original shape in salt solution, and the maximum bending angle reaches about 180°. Besides, this hydrogel actuator has a shorter recovery time compared with response time and the response/recovery time ratio is 2. By adjusting chemical and non-chemical factors including physical cross-link content, aspect ratio, salt solution concentration and soaking time, shape deformation degree and response/recovery time are controllable. Gradient pore construction and locomotion make this hydrogel actuator become a potential material for multiple applications.

Salt contamination has become the most critical challenge faced by water-based drilling fluids (WDFs) under extreme salinity and high temperatures, which deteriorates rheology and fluid loss properties, causing drilling accidents such as leakage, formation collapse and borehole instability. Herein, we report a salt-responsive zwitterionic polymer (PAMN) and its novel application as a tackifier in brine drilling fluid exploiting the anti-polyelectrolyte effect, in which the zwitterionic polymer molecular chain has undergone a transformation from a collapsed small spherical shape to an extended chain shape corresponding to the increasing ionic strength of the electrolyte. Compared with the saturated brine drilling fluid, the apparent viscosity and plastic viscosity of the saturated brine drilling fluid dispersed with PAMN increased by 542.9% and 925% respectively owing to the charge interaction on the molecular chain of PAMN was shielded by sodium chloride electrolyte, which resulted in the increase of the radius of gyration (Rg) of the PAMN molecular chain. Additionally, the salt response mechanism of zwitterionic polymer PAMN had been revealed by molecular simulation technology, which simulated the radius of gyration, radial distribution function (RDF), mean square displacement (MSD) and energy of molecular chain in water and salt water, respectively. This work demonstrates that the approach can be extensively generalized to a large class of synthetic zwitterionic polymers and can promote the development of various salt-responsive intelligent drilling fluids.

A novel pH/salt-responsive porous microgel was developed from hydrolyzed oxidized starch for the encapsulation, delivery, and stabilization of anthocyanins . To synthesize this microgel, native corn starch was modified by sequential TEMPO oxidation and glucoamylase hydrolysis, using trisodium phosphate (STMP) as a cross-linker. The morphology, structure, and physical properties of the modified starch samples and microgels were characterized by SEM, ATR-FTIR, and particle size analyses, as well as by zeta-potential measurements. The obtained results indicate that compared to the oxidized microgels, the porous microgels exhibit higher capacity of anthocyanin loading and slower release. A pH of 3 is least favorable for the loading of anthocyanins into the microgels and 22.7% of the encapsulated anthocyanins are released from oxidized microgels, compared to 10.4% released from porous microgels. In addition, the porous microgels enhance the stability of anthocyanins, which facilitates storage. The residual rate of anthocyanins encapsulated in porous microgels is around 31%, whereas that of compounds in oxidized microgels approaches 18% after 30 d of storage.

The development of new antimicrobial materials and strategies is of importance for many biomedical and industrial applications. In this work, we report a new strategy to integrate distinct antimicrobial, antifouling, and stimuli-responsive properties into a single hydrogel to realize bacteria resistance, killing, and releasing functions. To achieve this design, we conjugated salt-responsive anti-polyelectrolyte polyDVBAPS (poly(3-(dimethyl(4-vinylbenzyl)ammonio)propyl sulfonate)) with antifouling polyHEAA (poly(N-hydroxyethyl acrylamide)) and antimicrobial AgNPs (silver nanoparticles) to form a hybrid hydrogel of polyDVBAPS-g-polyHEAA@AgNPs, among which polyHEAA functions as a general antifouling background to prevent bacteria adsorption on the surface, AgNPs act as antimicrobial agents to kill bacteria on the surface, and polyDVBAPS uses its unique salt-responsive, anti-polyelectrolyte property to release adherent bacteria from the surface. In this design, polyDVBAPS-g-polyHEAA@AgNPs hydrogels not only effectively resist bacteria attachment and kill the adherent bacteria, but also regenerate the antifouling surface of the hydrogel by releasing the adhered bacteria to keep the surface free from bacteria. The polyDVBAPS-g-polyHEAA@AgNPs hydrogels exhibited high surface resistance to bacteria adsorption (<106 cells per cm2) for up to 4 days, high antibacterial activity by killing ∼99% of attached bacteria of both E. coli and S. aureus, and surface regeneration ability by releasing >96% of adherent live or dead bacteria from the surface upon a simple treatment of 1.0 M NaCl solution for 10 min. Upon the release of AgNPs, AgNPs were reloaded into the hydrogel again to achieve multiple antifouling, bactericidal, and regenerative properties. This work demonstrates a new design for a new multifunctional hydrogel to effectively achieve antimicrobial, antifouling, and surface regeneration properties, making this hydrogel very promising for antimicrobial applications.
