High-Temperature and Salt-Resistant Self-Suspending Proppant for Hydraulic Fracturing

Xiao Zhang,Zhanyi Wang,Jianan Deng,Honghao Zhao,Yuan Zhuang,Ziyi Zhang,Xiuxia Sun,Haoyu Lian,Miao Han,Yongjun Tian

In recent years, new technologies involving self-suspending proppant (SSP), which improves proppant distribution, reduces the use of chemicals in fracturing fluids, and simplifies the fracturing construction process, have become a focus of hydraulic fracturing research. However, the available products have poor suspension stability, cannot withstand high temperature and salt environments, and are highly damaging to reservoirs. In this study, we presented a novel self-suspending (HTS-SSP) proppant with excellent suspension stability, temperature resistance, and salt resistance, prepared from quartz sand, silane coupling agent, and modified polyacrylamide to achieve these properties. Wettability tests, surface morphology analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis proved that 3-methacryloxypropyltrmethoxysilane (KH570) successfully modifies quartz sand, and the HTS-SSP was synthesized. In terms of the suspension performance, HTS-SSP exhibited exceptional suspension stability due to the incorporation of KH570. It remained suspended at 150 °C or 24 wt % brine and showed excellent temperature and salt resistance. The gel-breaking fluid of the surface polymer of HTS-SSP had low damage to the reservoir, much less than the guar gum fluid. The difference between the conductivity of the aggregate remaining after HTS-SSP gel-breaking and that of unmodified quartz sand was not significant. The synthesized HTS-SSP demonstrates outstanding comprehensive performance and is an ideal candidate for reservoir development under harsh temperature and salinity conditions.

A Study on a Novel Hydrophobic Associative Polymer Thickener for High-Salinity Water in Hydraulic Fracturing

Jiarun Zhou,Shibin Wang,Ruoyu Yang,Nanpeng Yang,Yu Peng,Junlong Li

Graphical This study develops a highly salt-resistant, hydrophobic associative polyacrylamide (CHFR) to enhance the reuse of high-salinity flowback fluid. Its microstructure is characterized using FT-IR and ¹H NMR, while rheological analysis confirms its superior thickening properties and salt tolerance. CHFR significantly outperforms conventional systems, providing a novel solution for efficient fluid reuse in high-salinity reservoirs. The reuse of flowback fluid is a critical strategy for mitigating environmental pollution and reducing the costs associated with hydraulic fracturing technology in oil fields. However, in high-salinity formations, the electrostatic shielding effect caused by high-salinity flowback fluid significantly reduces the thickening efficiency of polyacrylamide-based thickeners, thereby hindering the reuse of flowback fluid. In this study, we synthesized a novel, high-salinity-resistant, hydrophobic associative polymer (CHFR) by incorporating the hydrophobic monomer octadecyl polyoxyethylene methacrylate (N1810) into acrylamide (AM), acrylic acid (AA), 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), and methacryloxyethyl trimethylammonium chloride (DMC). FT-IR and 1 H NMR confirmed the successful synthesis of CHFR. The polymer demonstrated a viscosity retention of 53% in a 20,000 mg/L NaCl solution and 46% in a CaCl 2 solution, exhibiting salt tolerance concentrations that were 10 and 30 times higher than those of conventional PAM/AMPS. At 100 °C and a shear rate of 100 s −1 , CHFR retained 78% of its viscosity. The interaction process between salt and CHFR can be divided into four phases: the initial period, the rapid viscosity decline period, the slow viscosity decline period, and the stable viscosity period. The CHFR polymer exhibits excellent salt resistance, providing a new type of polymer thickener for the reuse of high-salinity flowback fluid.

An integrated highly hydrated cellulose network with a synergistic photothermal effect for efficient solar-driven water evaporation and salt resistance

Yu Chen,Jin Yang,Lin Zhu,Xiaohua Jia,Sizhe Wang,Yong Li,Haojie Song

Solar-driven water evaporation is an effective approach for using solar energy to purify seawater and wastewater. However, the high energy requirements of bulk water evaporation fundamentally restrict the practicality of solar freshwater production. Herein, we demonstrate an efficient hierarchical solar evaporator by combining polydopamine (PDA) and Ti3C2Tx MXene (MX) with a cellulose network skeleton of delignified wood (DW). By integrating activated water in a hydrated cellulose network and the synergistic photothermal effect between PDA and MX, the obtained PDMX@DW evaporator achieved a high evaporation rate of 2.08 kg m−2 h−1 and energy efficiency of 93.6% under 1 sun illumination. Differential scanning calorimetry and dark evaporation experiments indicated that the water in PDMX@DW exhibited a lower vaporization enthalpy (1915 J g−1) than bulk water (2440 J g−1). Raman spectral analysis and density functional theory calculations were used to investigate the structure of water molecules in the cellulose network, and it turns out that high contents of weakly hydrogen-bonded intermediate water were the most likely origin of the reduced vaporization enthalpy. More importantly, due to the interactive cellulose network structure and increased water supply rate, PDMX@DW exhibited excellent salt resistance and long-term stability in high-concentration brine. This work provides an effective method for breaking the evaporation limitation of the traditional wood-based evaporator and improving its salt resistance.

Jing Jiang,Ruiru Yang,Fanyi Zeng,Sheng Tu

High-performance salt-resistant solar evaporators breaking the theoretical limit of solar steam generation are highly desired for solar water evaporation technology. However, low-cost, scalable and continuous solar steam generation remains a big challenge. Herein, a robust biomass-based salt-resistant three-dimensional (3D) evaporator is designed and developed, which is composed of bamboo leaf-derived carbon (BLC) and heat-insulating macroporous melamine foam (MF), showing the integrated merits for the boosted solar evaporation performances. The designed BLC/MF evaporator presents excellent photothermal conversion ability with an evaporation rate as high as 2.29 kg m -2 h −1 and acceptable evaporation efficiency of 93.95 % under one-sun irradiation. The superior performance endows BLC/MF evaporator with flexible and versatile behaviors to purify various water sources to produce clean water meeting the standard level of World Health Organization (WHO) for drinkable water. Significantly, the BLC/MF evaporator maintains a similar evaporation rate in saline solutions and can work stably at high salinities without salt deposition. This present discloses that the BLC/MF evaporator can be served as a feasible and robust alternative for solar water evaporation in various water environment for clean water production.

All-in-one design of wood evaporator with highly-efficient salt resistance for sustainable solar desalination and contaminated water purification

Zihao Wo,Xiuyue Sun,Haowen Sun,Yier Su,Yuhao Xie,Ni Yang,Xiwen Zhang

Solar steam generation combined with contaminated water purification provides a green and sustainable method to harvest fresh water from seawater or wastewater. However, essential challenges still exist in developing high-performance, multifunctional and durable evaporators. Herein, a novel wood evaporator composed of delignified balsa wood, reduced graphene oxide and partially reduced CuO/Cu 2 O nanoparticles is developed via an ultrasonic-assisted deposition technique. The synergistic effect of a 3-dimensional nanocomposite skeleton and formed heterojunctions facilitates a homogeneous distribution and sufficient interaction with water molecules, endowing the evaporator with superior optical, photothermal and solar evaporation performances. A superior evaporation rate of 2.10 kg·m −2 ·h −1 for pure water is achieved with an energy conversion efficiency of 83.39 % under 1 sun irradiation. Experimental and simulation tests further confirm the strong hydration ability of the wood evaporator to reduce the equivalent vaporization enthalpy. Meanwhile, the wood evaporator exhibits competitive salt resistance and reusability in seawater and even brines with extremely high concentration (20 wt%) in long-term irradiation, attributed to cooperative mechanisms including surface electro-negativity and interior three-dimensional salt diffusion. Stable self-floating, physical and chemical durability as well as photocatalytic antibacterial capabilities ensure long-term operation stability under harsh conditions. This work provides an efficient and potentially scalable solution for fresh water production and wastewater purification.

Vertical porous aerogel based on polypyrrole and bimetallic modified β-cyclodextrin polymer-chitosan for efficient solar evaporation

Jiyan Li,Yanju Jing,Min Qiao,Wenzhe Yang,Hanxue Sun,Rui Jiao,Junping Zhang,An Li

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) stands out as a prospective technology for freshwater production, playing a significant role in mitigating global water scarcity. Herein, a cyclodextrin polymer/chitosan composite aerogel (PPy-La/Al@CDP-CS) with vertically aligned channels was prepared as a solar evaporator for efficient solar steam generation. The vertically aligned pore structure, achieved through directional freezing assisted by liquid nitrogen, not only improves water transport during evaporation but also enhances light absorption through multiple reflections of sunlight within the pores. The polypyrrole particles sprayed on the surface of the aerogel acted as a light-absorbing layer, resulting in an impressive absorbance of 98.15 % under wetting conditions. The aerogel has an evaporation rate of 1.85 kg m −2  h −1 under 1 kW m − 2 irradiation. Notably, the vertical pore structure of the aerogel allows it to exhibit excellent evaporation performance and salt resistance even in highly concentrated salt solutions. Furthermore, this aerogel is an excellent solar-driven interfacial evaporator for purifying seawater and fluoride-containing wastewater. This photothermal aerogel has the advantages of excellent performance, low cost, and environmental friendliness, and thus this work provides a new approach to the design and fabrication of solar photothermal materials for water treatment.

Integrated Solar Evaporator with Salt Resistance and Lipophobicity Derived from Waste Newspapers for Efficient Desalination

Shanshan Wang,Chaohu Xiao,Shun Lu,Haijing Lu,Qi-Meige Hasi,Yuhan Zhang,Xingping Luo,Lihua Chen

Solar steam generation (SSG) is an effective way to mitigate the freshwater crisis. However, challenges still remain in scalable preparation, cost-effectiveness, and expanding the scope of practical applications for photothermal materials. Herein, a biomass-based solar steam generator (named OR-INP) with salt-resistant, oil-repellent, and anti-fouling performances is fabricated by grafting poly(ionic liquid)s onto celluloses from waste newspapers and then conducting oil-repellent modification. Benefiting from the broad solar absorption in the wet state (ca. 92%), low thermal conductivity (0.1108 W m–1 K–1), and strong hydrophilic and oleophobic properties, the solar evaporation efficiency is as high as 93.25% for pure water, 84.96% for 20 wt % NaCl, and 78.46% for 5 wt % oily wastewater, under 1 sun irradiation. Moreover, the aerogel still has excellent purification effects on solutions which contain organic dyes, heavy metal ions, or bacteria. Therefore, combining the merits of salt resistance, oil repellency, and wastewater treatment, this work develops the prospect of employing waste biomass resource-based photothermal materials and expands the practical application range of biomass-based evaporators.

Aligned Attapulgite-based aerogels with excellent mechanical property for the highly efficient solar steam generation

Peng Mu,Liang Song,Le Geng,Jian Li

Solar steam generation has attracted much attention due to its efficient and ecofriendly characteristics for application in water desalination and wastewater treatment. Many strategies have been developed to prepare the photothermal conversion materials. However, it is a challenge for preparing the materials with high energy efficiency, long durability and excellent salt resistance under 1 kW·m −2 illumination by using low-cost materials and simple method. Here, we report an ATP (Attapulgite) based PArG aerogel with low thermal conductivity (0.167 W·m −1 ·K −1 ), high mechanical property and superhydrophilicity by using combination of physical/chemical crosslinking of the ATP, PVA, GO and PA and freeze-drying for the efficient solar steam generation. The as-prepared PArG-A30 aerogel shows aligned three-dimensional porous structure and possesses high evaporation performance both in salt solution and the simulated seawater. The evaporation rate is calculated to be 1.4914 kg·m −2 ·h −1 for pure water, 1.4382 kg·m −2 ·h −1 for 20% of NaCl solution and the corresponding energy conversion is found to be 89.5% and 86% under 1 kW·m −2 illumination. In addition, the as-prepared PArG-A30 aerogel shows excellent durability and salt resistance in 20% NaCl solution, indicating the excellent the desalination performance of the resultant PArG-A30 aerogels. This study may offer a new approach to scalable fabricate a novel solar steam generator for the efficient solar steam generation by using simple method and low-cost materials.

Polymeric and non-crosslinked acid self-thickening agent based on hydrophobically associating water-soluble polymer during the acid rock reaction

Haiyang Tian,Hongping Quan,Zhiyu Huang,Wenmeng Duan,Shunjie Deng

Different from traditional crosslinked polymer diverting agents, a polymeric and non-crosslinked acid self-thickening agent (ZPAM) based on hydrophobically associating water-soluble polymer of acrylamide (AM), [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (DMC) and N , N ′-dimethyl octadecyl allyl ammonium chloride (DOAC) was synthesized. The apparent viscosity variation of ZPAM acid solutions in acid rock reaction and rheological properties of ZPAM spent acid solutions were studied. Results showed that ZPAM acid solutions demonstrated good uninterruptedly thickening ability from low apparent viscosity to high apparent viscosity during the acid rock reaction. Meanwhile, ZPAM spent acid solutions showed good shear resistance, viscoelasticity and high temperature resistance. The thickening mechanism of ZPAM acid solutions during the acid rock reaction was explained by apparent viscosity change, rheological properties of simulative ZPAM acid solutions, and ZPAM aqueous solutions with different concentrations of CaCl 2 . The results showed increasing calcium chloride concentration enhanced the hydrophobic association strength of the thickener solution, resulting in increasing solution viscosity, in other words, the self-thickening agent showed excellent salt resistance and acid resistance. In addition, the change of association strength of ZPAM acid solutions during the acid rock reaction was further confirmed via environmental scanning electron micrographs and UV spectrum. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Lamellar Wood Sponge with Vertically Aligned Channels for Highly Efficient and Salt-Resistant Solar Desalination

Xinjian Dai,Hao Guan,Xin Wang,Mingyue Wu,Jihang Hu,Xiaoqing Wang

Solar-assisted interfacial evaporation is a promising approach for purifying and desalinating water. As a sustainable biomass material, wood has attracted increasing interest as an innovative substrate for solar desalination, owing to its intrinsic porous structure, high hydrophilicity, and low thermal conductivity. However, developing wood-based solar evaporators with high evaporation rates and excellent salt resistance still remains a significant challenge, owing to the absence of large pores with high interconnectivity in natural wood. Herein, by converting the honeycombed structure of natural wood into a lamellar architecture via structural engineering, we develop a flexible wood sponge with vertically aligned channels for efficient and salt-resistant solar desalination after surface coating with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The special lamellar structure with an interlayer distance of 50–300 μm provides the wood sponge with faster water transport, lower thermal conductivity, and water evaporation enthalpy, thus achieving higher evaporation performances in comparison with the cellular structure of natural wood. Noteworthy, the vertically aligned channels of the wood sponge facilitate sufficient fluid convection and diffusion and enable efficient salt exchanges between the heating interface and the underlying bulk water, thus preventing salt accumulation on the surface. Benefiting from the distinctive lamellar structure, the developed wood-sponge evaporator exhibits exceptional salt resistance even in a hypersaline brine (20 wt %) during continuous 7-day desalination under 1 sun irradiation, with a high evaporation rate (1.38–1.43 kg m–2 h–1), outperforming most previously reported wood-based evaporators. The lamellar wood sponge may provide a promising strategy for desalinating high-salinity brines in an efficient manner.

Study on Multifunctional Drag-Reducing Suspension Agents

Tengfei Chen,Zhongcong Zhao,Yanrong Ge,Wenan Sun,Zhihao Chen,Xiaoliang Cheng,Xiaorui Liu,Huaqiang Shi

In the continuous liquid distribution process, the emulsion drag-reducing agent has poor viscosity-increasing ability and a low solid content, resulting in a high concentration and high cost. To solve this problem, a nanosuspension agent with a “shelf structure,” a dispersion accelerator, and a density regulator were used as auxiliary agents to realize the stable suspension of a polymer dry powder in an oil phase. The results show that the molecular weight of the synthesized polymer powder could reach nearly 28 million when the mass ratio of acrylamide (AM) to acrylic acid (AA) was 80:20 and a chain extender was added. The synthesized polymer powder was dissolved in tap water and 2% brine separately, and the viscosity of the solutions was measured. The dissolution rate of up to 90% was reached at 30 °C, and the viscosity was 33 and 23 mPa s in tap water and in 2% brine, respectively. A stable suspension can be obtained without obvious stratification in one week and with good dispersion after 6 months by using the following composition: 37% oil phase + 1% nanosuspension agent + 10% dispersion accelerator + 50% polymer dry powder + 2% density regulator. The drag-reduction performance is good, remaining close to 73% with increasing time. The viscosity of the suspension solution is 21 mPa s in 50% standard brine, and the salt resistance is good. The rate at which the suspension fracturing fluid damages the formation is 7.56%, and the reservoir damage is unsubstantial. Its performance in field applications illustrated that its sand-carrying capacity, referring to the capacity of the fracturing fluid to carry proppants into the fracture and place them in a predetermined position, reaches 10%. The results show that the fracturing fluid can be used as a pre-fluid to break the formation, form fractures, and expand fracture networks under low-viscosity conditions and can be used as a sand-carrying fluid to carry proppants into the formation under high-viscosity conditions. Additionally, the fracturing fluid can directly realize the fast conversion between high and low viscosities and allow for multiple uses of one agent.

Three-Dimensional Mirror-Assisted and Concave Pyramid-Shaped Solar–Thermal Steam Generator for Highly Efficient and Stable Water Evaporation and Brine Desalination

Ming-Hong Sun,Changjun Li,Ji Liu,Peng Min,Zhong-Zhen Yu,Xiaofeng Li

Although significant advances have been achieved in developing solar-driven water evaporators for seawater desalination, there is still room for simultaneously enhancing water evaporation efficiency, salt resistance, and utilization of solar energy. Herein, for the first time, we demonstrate a highly efficient three-dimensional (3D) mirror-assisted and concave pyramid-shaped solar–thermal water evaporation system for high-yield and long-term desalination of seawater and brine water, which consists of a 3D concave pyramid-shaped solar–thermal architecture on the basis of polypyrrole-coated nonwoven fabrics (PCNFs), a 3D mirror array, a self-floating polystyrene foam layer, and a tail-like PCNF for upward transport of water. The 3D concave pyramid-shaped solar–thermal architecture enables multiple solar light reflections to absorb more solar energy, while the 3D mirror-assisted solar light enhancement design can activate the solar–thermal energy conversion of the back side of the concave pyramid-shaped PCNF architecture to improve the solar–thermal energy conversion efficiency. Crucially, selective accumulation of the precipitated salts on the back side of the concave pyramid-shaped architecture is realized, ensuring a favorable salt-resistant feature. The 3D mirror-assisted and concave pyramid-shaped solar-driven water evaporation system achieves a record high water evaporation rate of 4.75 kg m–2 h–1 under 1-sun irradiation only and exhibits long-term desalination stability even when evaporating high-salinity brine waters, demonstrating its great applicability and reliability for high-yield solar-driven desalination of seawater and high-salinity brine water.
