Production of High-Purity Allyl Alcohol by the Salting-Out Method from Formic Acid-Mediated Deoxydehydration of Glycerol

Ruilong Jia,Binbin Zhao,Wenjie Xue,Lei Liu,Jinxiang Dong

Formic acid-mediated deoxydehydration of glycerol has emerged as an attractive approach to produce allyl alcohol; however, separation of allyl alcohol by distillation is not a straightforward task from the mixture of allyl alcohol, formic acid, and water because of their very close boiling point. A new route to separate allyl alcohol with high purity has been developed by the precipitation, distillation, and salting-out process. Among 11 salts, NaCl, K2HPO4, and K2CO3 could easily induce the liquid–liquid phase splitting. K2CO3 exhibits the best salting-out effect in a single salt system. Meanwhile, the solubility of allyl alcohol in the organic phase could be predicted by the mass fraction of salt. The allyl alcohol purity of >99.9% could be achieved by using 35% K2CO3 + 25% K2HPO4. The results also provide valuable references to obtain high-purity allyl alcohol for all the glycerol to allyl alcohol routes, because it is indispensable to separate allyl alcohol from its aqueous solution.

A salting-out strategy for the efficient separation of an azeotropic mixture of allyl alcohol and water

Ruilong Jia,Qizhuozhuo Hua,Xiaonan Ma,Guangfu Liao

Allyl alcohol and water can form the lowest boiling point azeotrope, but it is very hard to acquire high-purity allyl alcohol by normal distillation methods. Herein, a separation and purification protocol is developed for perfectly separating an azeotropic mixture of allyl alcohol and water using the salting-out method, in which three potassium phosphate salts, K5P3O10, K3PO4, and K4P2O7, are systematically investigated as salting-out agents, and finally a product consisting of > 99% allyl alcohol is obtained. A thermodynamic study demonstrates that this process involves endothermy and increment entropy. There is a good correlation between the solubility of allyl alcohol and the molar concentration of salt (mol per 1 kg water), and the solubility of the allyl alcohol in the organic phase or the water phase can be forecast using the mass percentage of salts. This work provides a new methodology for the efficient separation of an azeotropic mixture of allyl alcohol and water.

Fabrication of fatigue-resistant hydrogel via annealing-assisted salting-out method as flexible strain sensors

Chunxia Zhao,Zhonghua Dong,Min Guo,Liang Liu,Yuanpeng Wu,Yuntao Li,Dong Xiang,Hui Li,Jingjuan Lai,Li Wang

Hydrogels exhibit unique properties such as softness, biocompatibility, and responsiveness, which render such types of materials widely applicable in wearable devices. Although the toughness of hydrogels has been significantly improved over the past years to resist fracture deformations under the application of a single mechanical cyclic load, the already existing tough hydrogels are still prone to fatigue fracture when they are subjected to multiple cyclic mechanical loads. In this work, an annealing-assisted salting-out method was used to fabricate microcrystalline areas within the hydrogel to prepare anti-fatigue P(AAm-co-MPC)/PVA hydrogels. Interestingly, the fatigue threshold of these materials reaches the value of 480 J m −2 , much higher than that of the conventional synthetic hydrogel (1–100 J m −2 ). In addition, the proposed hydrogel structures exhibit excellent sensing performance, with a conductivity value of 0.42 S m −1 , and a long-term stable strain-current response (2500 cycles). The applicability of this technique is not limited only to conductive hydrogels, but can also be extended to enhance other functional hydrogels with poor fatigue resistance properties.

Hot-Pressing/Salt-Leaching Method Assisted by Boronic Ester Dynamic Bond to Prepare Vitrimer Foams with Ultra-Low Relative Permittivity and Superhydrophobic Performance

Yang Xiong,Lili Liu,Chengyao Hu,Junxiao Yang,Yawen Huang

Ultra-low dielectric foams (ULDFs) have found important use in antennas and wave transparent devices. However, the controlled preparation of ULDFs is still a big challenge. In this work, a boronic ester bond-assisted hot-pressing/salt-leaching (BHS) method is proposed to generate interconnected pore structure with tunable porosity and performance. In detail, styrene resin vitrimer is prepared with boronic ester cross-linked network (BESR) which possessed low dielectric constant of 2.70, high modulus of 385 MPa, and reprocessability. BESR vitrimer exhibited drastically enhanced processability at the temperature > T v (160 °C). Thanks to this unique feature, BESR vitrimer foams can be fabricated by hot-pressing with salt particles followed by salt leaching. Such vitrimer foams exhibited advantageous pore-forming processability, fabrication efficiency, and pore stability over conventional polymeric foams. The low extreme of dielectric constant can reach 1.60. Furthermore, owing to interconnected pore structure, superhydrophobic foam (water contact angel (CA) ≈ 154°) is facilely fabricated on the basis of BESR to afford anti-icing performance. The BESR foam can maintain its superhydrophobicity underwater flow impacting at 10 kPa pressure, showing advantageous high durability. BESR foams also have good recyclability and would be potentially applied in recyclable antennas.

Dramatically Enhancing Mechanical Properties of Polyvinyl Alcohol Hydrogels by Simultaneously Introducing a Hydrogen Bonding Forming Polymer During Salting-Out Treatment

Lin Yao,Wendi Xie,Huiliang Wang

Salting-out method has been widely employed to enhance the mechanical properties of hydrogels. Unfortunately, the enhancement in mechanical properties is still unsatisfactory for many applications. Here we report a modified salting-out method for preparing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels with dramatically enhanced mechanical properties by soaking a weakly cross-linked PVA hydrogel in a mixed aqueous solution of sodium citrate (Na 3 Cit) and polyacrylic acid (PAA). Compared with the PVA hydrogel prepared with the common salting-out method, the PVA/Na 3 Cit/PAA hydrogels show dramatically enhanced tensile strengths, elastic moduli, and elongations at break up to 21.8 MPa, 4.6 MPa, and 1200%, respectively. The mechanical properties of the hydrogels can be adjusted by controlling the concentrations of Na 3 Cit and PAA. The use of a mixed solution of an inorganic salt and a polymer capable of forming hydrogen bonds enables the simultaneous introduction of additional components into the hydrogel network and the formation of more and stronger hydrogen bonds with PVA chains during the salting-out process, resulting in the increased cross-linking density and enhanced mechanical properties of the hydrogel. This work provides a simple yet novel method for improving the mechanical properties of hydrogels. Graphical Simultaneous introduction of a polymer capable of forming hydrogen bonds, e.g., polyacrylic acid (PAA), into a weakly cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel during the salting-out treatment leads to the formation of more and stronger hydrogen bonding interactions and increased cross-linking density of the hydrogel, producing hydrogels with dramatically enhanced mechanical properties.

Biodegradable, High-Strength, Antiswelling Fluorescent Cellulosic Hydrogels via Salting-Out for Underwater Information Encryption and Anticounterfeiting

Xuezhen Feng,Gaoyuan Gu,Yabing Tian,Shibin Shang,Xujuan Huang,Jianxin Jiang,Zhanqian Song,Haibo Zhang

Fluorescent cellulosic hydrogels are suitable for information encryption and anticounterfeiting. However, their underwater application remains a major challenge due to insufficient antiswelling and mechanical properties affecting anticounterfeiting accuracy and durability. This study reports a strategy to prepare high-strength, biodegradable, and antiswelling fluorescent cellulosic hydrogels through salting-out and hydrophobic interactions. Salting-out and hydrophobic polycyclic structures (acrylpimaric acid) enhance the H-bonds, hydrophobic interactions, and coordination bonds of hydrogels, increasing the network cross-linking density. The subsequent improvement in the energy dissipation mechanisms results in a hydrogel with high compressive strength (18.52 MPa) and tensile toughness (12.16 MJ/m3). Furthermore, the enhanced network density and hydrophobic interactions provided the hydrogel with a high diffusion energy barrier, restricting the ingress and mobility of H2O and resulting in a swelling ratio (SR) of 0.04%. This hydrogel was capable of complete biodegradation in soil within 20 days. The perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid (PTCA)-Eu/Tb ligands imparted fluorescence to the hydrogel; when they are combined with Python, they enable efficient information encryption and decryption underwater. Furthermore, the biodegradable fluorescent cellulosic hydrogel, prepared from inexpensive and ecofriendly raw materials (cellulose and rosin), offers a strategy for the sustainable development of underwater anticounterfeiting materials.
