The effects of different additions of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide)/sodium alginate hydrogels(D-PNIPAM/SA) on the desalination of saline soil were investigated in this study. The effects of liquid absorption rate(LAR) of the D-PNIPAM/SA by temperature, NaCl concentration, and DMSO addition amount were studied. And the deswelling rate(DR) tests of different DMSO addition amounts were also investigated. The LAR decreased significantly with the temperature increase from 20 °C to 35 °C and with the increase of NaCl concentration from 0.597 g/L to 7.714 g/L. The LAR increased while the DR decreased with the DMSO addition increased from 0 ml to 3.5 ml. The results indicated that the optimal addition of the DMSO was 3.5 ml. In this addition, the D-PNIPAM/SA was observed in its best form by an Ultra-depth of field 3D microscope, and the phase transition temperature was reduced to −2.95 °C. In NaCl solution, DMSO was added from 0 ml to 3.5 ml, and the D-PNIPAM/SA absorption rate increased from 6.60 g/g to 12.41 g/g.In the desalination of saline soil study, the desalination rate of the D-PNIPAM/SA was reached 88.609 % in the saline soil solution test, and the desalination rate reached 94.765 % in the dry saline soil test.

The widespread use of diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP) and plastic products in agriculture has led to new characteristics of soil pollution in which DiBP coexists with microplastics, but their combined effects on soil ecosystems, especially saline soil microorganisms, are unclear. This study evaluated DiBP (1 and 10 mg/kg) and polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs, 0.25w/w) on saline soil microorganisms’ effects (60 days) from bacterial and fungal community structure and nitrogen-carbon cycle. DiBP exposure changed bacterial and fungal community structures, and the changes were more significant after increasing DiBP concentration or adding PE-MPs. Nitrospira , MND1 , and Lecanicillium abundance decreased, while Sphingomonas and Mortierella abundance increased. Aromatic compound and hydrocarbon degradation functions were activated (61.47 %–177.96 %), while nitrate reduction was inhibited (0.16 %–14.18 %). The increase in DiBP concentration inhibited the nitrogen cycle by reducing denitrification genes nirK and nirS abundance, and promoted the carbon cycle by enhancing β -glucosidase activity. The combined exposure of DiBP and PE-MPs inhibited the carbon cycle by reducing carbon fixation genes cbbLG and cbbLR abundance, and promoted the nitrogen cycle by enhancing urease activity. DiBP and DiBP + PE-MPs exposure activated enzyme activity through hydrophobic forces. Prolonged exposure had a significant impact on dehydrogenase activity and cbbLR gene abundance, while dehydrogenase activity may serve as an early warning indicator of DiBP and DiBP + PE-MPs effect to soil microorganisms. DiBP toxicity to microorganisms increased with increasing concentration (8.06 %–17.78 %). PE-MPs increased DiBP toxicity to microorganisms (8.27 %–22.56 %). This study suggests that combined contamination of DiBP and MPs requires particular attention in saline agricultural soils.

Purpose The contamination of soil with antibiotics has become a hot issue for the environment and global public health. However, there are scarcely any studies on the occurrence forms of antibiotics in saline soil. Occurrence forms of antibiotics are related to bioavailability. Therefore, this study facilitates the evaluation of the ecological risk of antibiotics in saline soil. Materials and methods An experiment with artificial antibiotic contamination of soil and salinization simulations was conducted. The changes in the occurrence forms of oxytetracycline (OTC) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in saline soil were analyzed by continuous ultrasonic extraction. The factors for occurrence forms, including aging time and particle size fraction, were considered. Results and discussion Soil salinization promoted the conversion of OTC and SMX from acid-soluble and bound states to water-soluble and locked states. Oxytetracycline in saline soil was predominantly in the water-soluble and acid-soluble states, accounting for 54.9–83.7% of the total. Sulfamethoxazole as well is accounting for 66.1–82.1%. In addition, the aging process from 7 to 63 days facilitated the conversion of OTC and SMX from the water-soluble, acid-soluble, and bound states to the non-extractable locked states, resulting in reduced bioavailability. Since the content of extractable forms of OTC and SMX in saline clay was high, it favors conversion to a locked state. Conclusions Oxytetracycline and sulfamethoxazole in saline soil were mainly in bioavailable states. The aging effect reduced the bioavailability of OTC and SMX in saline soil. Clay had the low proportion of OTC and SMX in the bioavailable state, reducing environmental risks.

Hydrophobized soils (or so-called artificial hydrophobic soils) are a novel geomaterial with a great potential in engineering applications due to its low affinity to water. For saline soils, hydrophobizing such soils can mitigate the soil salinization and subsequent engineering disasters such as salt expansion and corrosion by chlorides. To induce soil hydrophobicity , hydrophobic agents are widely used such as organo-silanes, fatty acids, and waxes. Correspondingly, the engineering properties and durability of these hydrophobized soils have been comprehensively investigated. However, all these studies focused on the clean mineral soils, i.e. , the soils without salts and in a moderate pH. For saline soils, the feasibility, stability and durability of these hydrophobic agents are unclear. This paper aims to propose suitable and feasible hydrophobic agents in hydrophobizing saline soils, by investigating its hydrophobicity change and having an insight into the mechanisms. The saline soils used were collected from Qinghai, China, and were treated by five different hydrophobic agents at different concentrations, with the hydrophobicity quantified by water drop penetration time, surface tension and contact angle. The soil hydrophobicity change was recorded after the treatment and wetting-drying cycles, in order to assess its stability and durability. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectrum and N 2 adsorption experiment were carried out to study the mechanism of soil hydrophobicity formation and degradation. The results showed two agents, namely Sodium methyl siliconate and Polymethylhydrosiloxane, provided the greatest and most durable hydrophobicity in saline soils. Their different formation mechanisms at particle- and nano-scale were also discussed. A further assessment on the soil mechanical properties revealed that both compaction behavior and strength were negligibly influenced by these two agents.
