In order to promote the sustainable development and utilization of nuclear energy, it is essential to develop convenient and efficient methods for uranium enrichment. In this work, an amidoxime functionalized magnetic composite (CS-Ppy-Fe 3 O 4 -AO) was synthesized by a simple two-step process and applied for selective adsorption of uranium from natural Salt Lake water. The effect of CS-Ppy-Fe 3 O 4 -AO on the uranium adsorption capacity under different conditions such as pH, contact time, temperature, ionic strength and interfering ions were firstly investigated by batch experiments. The results indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity was 937.14 mg/g at pH= 6 and T = 298 K, which was higher than that of most currently reported magnetic adsorbents. Moreover, the adsorbent could be easily regenerated and still maintained high adsorption capacity after five adsorption-desorption cycles. Meanwhile, the adsorption mechanism of CS-Ppy-Fe 3 O 4 -AO on uranium was investigated by FT-IR and XPS, and they showed that nitrogen-oxygen functional groups (e.g. amidoxime and amino groups) played a predominant role on the adsorption of uranium. What’ s more, the CS-Ppy-Fe 3 O 4 -AO showed excellent selectivity and adsorption capacity (3.75 mg/g) on uranium in Salt Lake water, which implied that the CS-Ppy-Fe 3 O 4 -AO could be potentially used as a desired adsorbent on uranium enrichment.

Uranium as a nuclear fuel, its source and aftertreatment has been a hot topic of debate for developers. In this paper, amidoxime and guanidino-modified cotton fibers (DC-AO-PHMG) were synthesized by the two-step functionalization approach, which exhibited remarkable antimicrobial and high uranium recovery property. Adsorption tests revealed that DC-AO-PHMG had excellent selectivity and anti-interference properties, the maximum adsorption capacity of 609.75 mg/g. More than 85 % adsorption capacity could still be kept after 10 adsorption-desorption cycles, and it conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model as a spontaneous heat-absorbing chemical monolayer process. FT-IR, EDS and XPS analyses speculated that the amidoxime and amino synergistically increased the uranium uptake. The inhibitory activities of DC-AO-PHMG against three aquatic bacteria, BEY , BEL (from Yellow River water and lake bottom silt, respectively) and B. subtilis were significantly stronger, and the uranium adsorption was not impacted by the high bacteria content. Most importantly, DC-AO-PHMG removed up to 94 % of uranium in simulated seawater and extracted up to 4.65 mg/g of uranium from Salt Lake water, which demonstrated its great potential in the field of uranium resource recovery.

Rubidium (Rb) and cesium (Cs) have important applications in highly technical fields. Salt lakes contain huge reserves of Rb and Cs with industrial significance, which can be utilized after extraction. In this study, a composite magnetic adsorbent (Fe3O4@ZIF-8@AMP, AMP = ammonium phosphomolybdate) was prepared and its adsorption properties for Rb+ and Cs+ were studied in simulated and practical brine. The structure of the adsorbent was characterized by SEM, XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption, FT-IR, and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The adsorbent had good adsorption affinity for Rb+ and Cs+. The Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order dynamics described the adsorbing isotherm and kinetic dates, respectively. The adsorption capacity and adsorption rate of Fe3O4@ZIF-8@AMP were increased by 1.86- and 2.5-fold compared with those of powdered crystal AMP, owing to the large specific surface area and high dispersibility of the adsorbent in the solution. The adsorbent was rapidly separated from the solution within 17 s using an applied magnetic field owing to the good magnetic properties. The composite adsorbent selectively adsorbed Rb+ and Cs+ from the practical brine even in the presence of a large number of coexisting ions. The promising adsorbent can be used to extract Rb+ and Cs+ from aqueous solutions.

Uranium plays an important role in nuclear energy and the abundant amount of uranium could be explored in Salt Lake water. However, the existence of pollutants, microorganisms and coexisting ions make it very challenging to selectively adsorb uranium from Salt Lake. Herein, a graphene oxide-based aerogel (CS-GO-DO/ZnO) adsorbent was prepared by compounding graphene oxide (GO) with amidoximated diaminomaleonitrile (DO), ZnO particles and Chitosan (CS) to selectively adsorb uranium. Batch adsorption experiments revealed that the CS-GO-DO/ZnO aerogel showed high adsorption capacity and good selectivity for uranium and the maximum adsorption capacity can reach 561.09 mg/g in pure uranium solution. Most importantly, the synthesized CS-GO-DO/ZnO aerogel showed excellent antibacterial and antifouling performance, and the adsorption capacity can still reach more than 96 % of the pure solution even in the presence of abundant bacteria and pollutants. Finally, the synthesized material was applied in natural Salt Lake water and it presented superior uranium adsorption capacity (3.67 mg/g). Therefore, the CS-GO-DO/ZnO aerogel can be potentially used as a promising adsorbent for uranium extraction.

The limited availability of terrestrial uranium resources poses significant challenges to the development of nuclear energy. Extracting uranium from Salt Lake water offers a new solution to address the shortage of uranium resources. This study used chitosan, a naturally adsorptive material, to create chitosan microporous membranes (CS) with polyethylene glycol as a porogen. Subsequently, a novel amidoxime-based chitosan microporous membrane adsorbent (CS-AO) was developed based on CS for uranium extraction from Salt Lake water. The CS-AO membrane's hydroxyl, amino, and amidoxime groups work synergistically to provide multiple binding sites, significantly enhancing its binding capacity for UO 2 2+ . Under optimal conditions (initial concentration 3.0 mmol L −1 , temperature 323 K, pH 6), the adsorption capacity reached 2.84 mmol g −1 , with rapid adsorption/desorption rates and good selectivity. At a uranium feed concentration of 0.05 mmol L −1 and flow rate of 1.0 mL min −1 , the treatment capacity was 1046.93 L m −2 . Moreover, when applied to actual brine collected from the Chaerhan Salt Lake in Golmud, Qinghai, China for uranium extraction, CS-AO achieves an extraction rate of 79.6 %. Additionally, CS-AO showed over 90 % antibacterial effects against E. coli and S. aureus , with excellent stability, making it suitable for long-term Salt Lake uranium extraction.

Use of biowastes for biochar production is an eco-friendly and cost-effective approach for the removal of arsenic (As) from water. However, low adsorption capacity of raw biochar could be a main concern for its practical application. Thus, we explored arsenite (As(III)) sorption to pristine pine cone biochar (PCBC), populous leaf biochar (PLBC) and nano zero-valent zinc-modified PCBC and PLBC (nZVZn-PCBC and nZVZn-PLBC) in aqueous solutions and naturally As-contaminated salt lake water. Biochars were characterized by advanced microscopic and spectroscopic techniques to delineate their surface morphology, chemical properties, and elemental composition. Sorption mechanism was investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, which indicated that As(III) adsorption mainly controlled by porous structure and ligand exchange of –OH ions on Zn–OH by forming Zn–O–As(III) complexes. The nZVZn-PCBC possessed a higher porous structure and exhibited higher sorption (2.87 mg g −1 , 96 %) in contrast to pristine PCBC (1.95 mg g −1 , 65 %) at pH 7. For sorption kinetics, pseudo-second-order adsorption has given a higher R 2 = 0.99 value. Langmuir isotherm model well-described (R 2 = 0.98) As(III) sorption on nZVZn-PCBC. The nZVZn-PCBC efficiently removed As (84 %) from naturally As-contaminated salt lake water in the presence of co-occurring competing anions. In short, biochar modification with nano zero-valent zinc showed that As can be removed effectively from synthetic as well as real salt lake water.
