Synergistic effects of adsorption and photocatalysis in MIL-88A(Fe) catalyst for remediation of phenanthrene-contaminated saline-alkaline soils

Meng Xia,Shuai Zhang,Kaihao Xu,Chengxue Zhang,Xiaocong Wang

In arid and semi-arid areas, the remediation of saline-alkaline soils polluted by organic contaminants is challenging. In this study, the adsorption–photocatalysis synergistic removal of organic contaminants was realised using the MIL-88A(Fe) catalyst, and the saline-alkaline soils were remediated simultaneously. The adsorption isotherm of catalyst conformed to Langmuir model, and the photocatalytic degradation of PHE in an optimal visible light system achieved a PHE degradation efficiency of up to 86.2 % within 30 min. Based on the identification of active oxygen species, the PHE photocatalytic degradation was primarily driven by holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals (·O 2 - ), followed by hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). Furthermore, the determined physical and chemical properties of the saline-alkaline soils indicated that the soil pH value decreased to 6.82, effectively increasing the absorbable nitrogen content and improving soil fertility. This study offers a new strategy for the removal of organic contaminants under special soil medium conditions.

Insights into the low-temperature rapid catalytic pyrolysis and remediation mechanism of weathered petroleum-contaminated saline-alkali soil using Beta zeolite

Meng Xia,Kaihao Xu,Shuai Zhang,Chengxue Zhang,Xiaocong Wang,Jiqun Li

Pyrolysis technique is considered to have great potential in the remediation of petroleum-contaminated soil, but it still has difficulties such as high energy consumption for the degradation of complex petroleum hydrocarbons and the deterioration of soil quality after treatment. In this study, the low-temperature rapid catalytic pyrolysis was realized using Beta zeolite to assist in remediating weathered petroleum-contaminated saline-alkali soil. Under the action of Beta zeolite, the removal efficiency of petroleum hydrocarbons reached 81% after pyrolysis treatment for 10 min at 250 °C, which was reduced to regulatory standard. The pyrolysis behavior and mechanism revealed that the addition of Beta zeolite effectively reduced the activation energy of C-C and C-O bonds cleavage in petroleum hydrocarbon macromolecules due to the strong acidity of Beta, meanwhile the quality of recovered oil from pyrolysis was improved. Additionally, the analyses of soil physicochemical property indicated that the harmless graphitic C generated from the degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons increased the organic matter in the soil, and the addition of Beta zeolite enhanced soil water retention capacity and reduced the soil alkalinity, thus improving the ecological function of saline-alkali soil. This study provides a new strategy for the removal of organic pollutants under special soil media conditions.

Coal gasification slag for preparation of environmentally friendly superabsorbent composites with rapid water absorption and salt tolerance

Yan Liu,Yongfeng Zhu,Fangzhi Duan,Bin Mu,Xicun Wang,Aiqin Wang

It is crucial to design the novel low-cost and salt-tolerant superabsorbent for safeguarding food security and achieving sustainable agriculture. Herein, the porous superabsorbent composites with excellent salt tolerance were fabricated by redox-initiated grafting polymerization using water-based Pickering foam template co-stabilized with solid waste of coal gasification slag and plant particles Sapindus mukorossi pericarp . The stabilization mechanism of Pickering foams, swelling performance and salt-resistance of porous superabsorbent composites were studied in detail. Due to the abundant porous structure and the presence of coal gasification slag, the obtained superabsorbent composites exhibited rapid swelling rate and excellent water absorption capability, and the maximum water absorption in distilled water and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution reached 910 g/g and 126 g/g after 30 min, respectively. As 1.5 wt% the optimal superabsorbent composites was added into the saline-alkali soil, the growth of cabbages was significantly improved, and the plant height and chlorophyll content increased by 45.0% and 12.5%, respectively. This work served as a significant reference for preparing novel environmentally friendly water-saving materials for arid saline-alkali soil improvement.

Bioremediation of alkane–containing saline soils using the long–chain alkane–degrading bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa DL: Effects, communities, and networks

Tingting Wang,Jiawei Jing,Pengfei Huang,Xinyu Guo,Chuan Li,Yuanyuan Qu

Remediation of soil contaminated with long–chain hydrocarbons and affected by salinization poses a considerable challenge. The isolation of a bacterial strain, identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa DL, from petroleum–contaminated saline–alkali soil has been reported in this study. The strain demonstrated a high capacity to degrade long–chain alkanes and exhibited adaptability to saline–alkali conditions. Gene annotation and analysis of degradation products revealed that the strain DL employed a step–by–step chain–breaking mechanism to degrade long–chain alkanes. Following 160 days of bioaugmented remediation of contaminated soil using the strain DL, 81.36 % degradation of long–chain alkanes, initially present at a concentration of 30,000 mg/kg, was achieved. The activities of soil enzymes, including dehydrogenase, lipase, catalase, and urease, were significantly increased ( p  < 0.05). Community structure analysis revealed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa DL successfully colonized the contaminated soil, achieving a relative abundance of 69 %. In addition, alkane–degrading bacterial genera, such as Salinimicrobium , Isoptericola , Gordonia , Achromobacter and Ochrobactrum , emerged as new dominant genera. Microbial cooccurrence networks confirmed that bioaugmentation with the strain DL could streamline interpopulation interactions within the community and enhance associative networks, thereby guiding community evolution toward improved alkane degradation. This study offers valuable strain resources and data support for the bioremediation of saline–alkali soils contaminated with long–chain alkanes.

Adsorption of nonylphenol on coastal saline soil: Will microplastics play a great role?

Jian Lu,Jie Wu,Jun Wu,Xia He

Microplastics widely exist in diverse matrices to become important hosts of pollutants. Little information regarding adsorption of emerging contaminants on coastal saline soils influenced by co-existing microplastics is available. Thus, the adsorption behaviors of nonylphenol (NP) on coastal saline soil influenced by microplastics were discussed. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC, 4.7 mm), polyethylene (4.85 mm), and polypropylene (4.51 mm) with addition dose of 10% were used to discuss the effect of microplastic type on adsorption of NP by coastal saline soil while PVC samples with size of 4.7 mm and 0.11 mm were used to explore the effect of microplastic size on NP adsorption. The NP adsorption capacity of the saline soil containing 10% of PVC (4.7 mm) was twice that of soil without PVC. Smaller-size PVC (0.11 mm) with addition amount of 10% enhanced the NP adsorption capacity of the coastal saline soil by 117% to reach 8.91 μg g −1 . The desorption capacity of NP on saline soil decreased from 40% to 30% of total adsorption capacity with co-existing PVC. Adsorption/desorption kinetics of NP on coastal saline soil with PVC microplastics could be well explained by pseudo second order model while Freundlich model could better fit the isotherm data of NP adsorption/desorption to show possible occurrence of the multiple-layer adsorption. This study will provide new information regarding the environmental behaviors of typical emerging contaminants on coastal saline soil containing microplastics.

Preparation of artificial humic acid from cotton stalk and saline-alkali soil by synergistic catalytic pyrolysis and its potential agricultural application

Xiuduan Yang,Boyuan Tan,Dehui Kong,Jiarun Duan,Xueying Zhao,Gan Wang,Xiaojun Niu,Lijuan Zhang,Li Yang,Bekchanov Davronbek,Xintai Su

s The green synthesis of artificial humic acid (AHA) is a key approach to the efficient utilization of biomass waste resources. To reduce dependence on strong alkaline agents (KOH, NaOH, etc.) in current humification methods, this study proposes using Saline-alkali soil (SAS) as a cost-effective substitute for producing AHA from biomass solid waste. The results of the study indicated that an AHA yield of 23.33 % ± 1.12 % was achieved through pyrolytic humification under optimal conditions (250 °C, 2 h, with SAS to cotton stalk (CS) ratio of 4: 1). Characterization analysis demonstrated that the SAS supplied an alkaline environment throughout the humification process. Furthermore, the mineral elements in the SAS (Na + , K + , Fe 3+ , and Al 3+ ) facilitated the decomposition of lignin to generate polyphenolic structures, which promoted the protein condensation and increased the aromaticity of AHA. Carbon flow analysis revealed that 60.5 % of the carbon was immobilized, with AHA contributing up to 25.6 % of the total immobilized carbon. Hydroponic experiments demonstrated that the addition of AHA at a concentration of 200 mg L −1 significantly enhanced wheat growth. The residual carbon soil cultivation experiment revealed that the residual carbon exhibited a high specific surface area (6.57 m 2 g −1 ) and effective adsorption properties, achieving a 16 % immobilization rate of Pb and alleviating heavy metal stress on plants. This study presents an innovative approach to the integrated management of SAS and converting biomass solid waste into 'carbon-negative emissions'.

A sulfate-palygorskite composite amendment for saline-alkali soil: Simultaneous alkalinity reduction, nutrient enrichment, and crop growth promotion

Yijue Fei,Keren Jiao,Xiaoyang Liu,Baolong Wang,Rui Song,Zilin Meng,Binbin Liu,Jiaqi Wu,Chenyu Qi,Wenfeng Zhou,Yuanlin Zhu,Haixiang Gao,Shuwen Hu

This study introduces a composite amendment, containing CaSO₄, MgSO₄, Fe₂(SO₄)₃, and Palygorskite (PGS), for concurrently improving saline-alkali soil physicochemical properties and promoting crop growth via in situ soil regulation and nutrient release. Experimental results demonstrated Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) structure formation within the amended soil after 20 days, a key in situ mineralization mechanism absent in the control. This process significantly reduced soil pH from 9.85 to 7.86 (a 20.2 % decrease) and drastically lowered CO₃²⁻ content from 33.43 g/kg to 5.12 g/kg (an 84.68 % reduction), effectively mitigating soil alkalinity. Concurrently, exchangeable Na⁺ content decreased markedly from 700.7 mg/kg to 183.67 mg/kg (a 73.8 % reduction), alleviating sodicity. Furthermore, the amendment substantially increased water-soluble nutrient ions: Ca²⁺ (1.17–30.35 mg/kg), Mg²⁺ (0.125–9.58 mg/kg), total available Fe (49.78–89.35 mg/kg), and available SO₄²⁻ (2.06–21.62 g/kg). Notably, the amendment enhanced Soil Organic Matter (SOM) retention after simulated leaching; SOM in amended soil (6.81 g/kg) remained significantly higher than the control (5.14 g/kg), indicating improved carbon stabilization. Pot experiments using ryegrass confirmed the amendment's efficacy, showing significantly enhanced germination, root length, and shoot length, even enabling immediate planting post-application. In summary, the composite amendment leverages in situ LDH formation for stable CO₃²⁻ immobilization and alkalinity reduction, while enriching the soil with essential nutrients (Ca, Mg, Fe, S). This dual action facilitates immediate crop establishment, integrating soil regulation with controlled fertilizer distribution.

A biodegradable chitosan-CMC-silk fibroin hydrogel enhances soil water retention and wheat growth in saline-alkali soil

Xiaojun Wang,Jiaqi Wu,Baolong Wang,Zhuofan Mao,Qiang Li,Yuanlin Zhu,Jing Li,Runhua Lu,Wenfeng Zhou,Haixiang Gao,Shuwen Hu

Enhancing water retention and crop productivity in widespread, challenging saline-alkali soils necessitates sustainable amendment strategies. This study reports the development and evaluation of a novel biodegradable hydrogel synthesized from natural polymers—chitosan (CS) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)—utilizing silk fibroin (SF) self-assembly for physical crosslinking, thereby avoiding toxic chemical agents. The resulting CS-CMC-SF hydrogel possessed a hierarchical porous structure (BET surface area ~ 163 m 2 /g), exhibited high equilibrium water absorbency (~130–144 g/g in deionized water), demonstrated favorable swelling stability under relevant pH and salinity conditions, possessed thermal stability up to approximately 200 °C, and showed ready biodegradability (~78 % weight loss in 14 days soil burial). Application of this hydrogel at 0.5 % (w/w) to saline-alkali soil significantly increased its maximum water holding capacity by 103 % and markedly reduced the rate of water evaporation compared to unamended soil. Consequently, incorporating 0.1 % (w/w) hydrogel into the saline-alkali soil significantly promoted early wheat seedling growth, enhancing root length (~+38 %), leaf length (+20–43 %, variety dependent), biomass accumulation (+24–71 %), and plant water status under stress conditions. These findings highlight the potential of this biodegradable, natural polymer-based hydrogel, prepared via a green physical crosslinking method, as an effective soil amendment strategy to improve water resource utilization and enhance crop resilience in challenging saline-alkali agricultural systems.

Facile synthesis, release mechanism, and life cycle assessment of amine-modified lignin for bifunctional slow-release fertilizer

Haibin Ji,Somia Yassin Hussain Abdalkarim,Yunfei Shen,Xuefei Chen,Yixuan Zhang,Jiayuan Shen,Hou-Yong Yu

Biomass-based slow-release fertilizers (SRFs) are a sustainable solution for addressing food scarcity, improving fertilizer efficiency, and reducing pollution, whereas they still face complex preparation, high costs, and low release characteristics. This study introduces a simple and innovative approach to producing bifunctional green SRFs with controlled release and conditioning properties for saline soils and harsh environments. The method involves a one-pot preparation of microsphere-structured amine-modified lignin slow-release fertilizer (L-U X ) using biomass lignin as the starting material. The L-U X demonstrates an exceptional fertilizer loading rate (66.2 %) and extended slow-release performance (288 h), effectively enhancing the fertilizer's release ability. Compared to traditional fertilizers, the bifunctional L-U X significantly improves soil water retention capacity (824.3 %), plant growth, and germination percentage in challenging soil conditions (133 %). These findings highlight the potential of L-U X as a large-scale controlled-release fertilizer in harsh environments. A life cycle assessment (LCA) was also conducted to evaluate the environmental impact of L-U X from its production to disposal. This revealed that L-U X has a minimal environmental footprint compared to conventional inorganic fertilizers. This study further supports the widespread application of L-U X as an environmentally friendly alternative.

Effective strategies for reclamation of saline-alkali soil and response mechanisms of the soil-plant system

Xin Xu,Lin Guo,Shaobo Wang,Xuanyi Wang,Meng Ren,Pengjie Zhao,Ziyi Huang,Hongjun Jia,Jinhang Wang,Aijun Lin

The combination of amendments has emerged as a potential strategy to efficiently alleviate salt stress in saline-alkali soil. However, knowledge regarding how to optimize the proportion of different amendment materials, comprehensively assess the contribution of each component, and clarify the response mechanisms of the amendment-saline-alkali soil-plant system is incomplete. Based on this, we conducted a pot experiment to evaluate the improvement effect of the combined application of different amendment materials at varying levels and the contribution of the amendment components to alleviating salt stress. Overall, T6 exhibited the most significant improvement effect on the physicochemical and biological properties of the saline-alkali soil and promoted the growth of oilseed rape, with the levels of 2.0 % phosphogypsum, 2.0 % humic acid , 0.25 % bentonite , and 0.03 % sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. Compared with the control group, the EC decreased by 1.51 % to 33.49 %, the soil salt content dropped by 11.40 % to 35.46 %, and the soil soluble Na + concentration significantly declined by 39.47 % to 63.20 %. Additionally, the soil nutrient content and soil microbial community structure were enhanced in treatment groups. Meanwhile, amendments alleviated salt stress in the oilseed rape plant by activating anti-oxidative enzymes and osmoregulatory substances such as soluble sugar and proline, thus improving their ability to remove reactive oxygen species (ROS). The anti-oxidative enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) were significantly increased, with an increase of 10.68 % (SOD, T2) ∼207.31 % (CAT, T6) compared to the control group. The structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis and simulation experiments indicated that the amendment components synergically promoted the amelioration effect on salt stress, and effectively improved soil properties, which affected the response of oilseed rape to soil environment. This research paper provides the relevant reference for the combined application of different amendment materials for soil reclamation .

Enhancing sweet sorghum emergence and stress resilience in saline-alkaline soils through ABA seed priming: insights into hormonal and metabolic reprogramming

Jianfeng Yang,Wenlan Zhang,Tianyu Wang,Jiawei Xu,Jinjing Wang,Jiahao Huang,Yingpeng Sun,Yu Ni,Yanjun Guo

Sweet sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor Moench) seedling emergence and growth are significantly impeded by physical soil crusts (PSCs) in saline-alkaline soils. Abscisic acid (ABA) is a potent seed priming agent known for modulating plant physiological and metabolic responses under salinity stress. However, the influence of ABA priming on seedling emergence in PSCs remains unclear. This study conducted both pot and field experiment to examine the effects of ABA priming on enhancing seedling emergence under PSC conditions. ABA priming altered the balance of at least 24 endogenous phytohormones, including abscisic acid, jasmonic acid, gibberellins, ethylene, auxins, and cytokinins. Additionally, it reprogrammed starch and sucrose metabolism, resulting in the differential expression of genes encoding key enzymes such as AMY, BAM, and INV, which are crucial for converting complex sugars into readily available energy sources, thereby supporting seedling growth. Furthermore, 52 differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) of flavonoids were identified in germinating seedlings, including 15 anthocyanins, 3 flavones, 7 flavonols, 6 isoflavones, 7 flavanones, and 14 other flavonoids. Genetic and metabolic co-expression network analysis, along with flavonoid biosynthesis pathway exploration, revealed that the biosynthesis of 17 key DEMs—including liquiritigenin, apigenin, kaempferide, syringetin, phloretin, formononetin, dihydrokaempferol, and xanthohumol—was regulated by 10 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with flavonoid biosynthesis. These DEGs encoded 7 enzymes critical for this pathway, including chalcone synthase, shikimate O-hydroxycinnamoyltransferase, bifunctional dihydroflavonol 4-reductase, naringenin 7-O-methyltransferase, and anthocyanidin reductase. This regulation, along with reduced levels of superoxide anion (O 2 − ) and malondialdehyde and increased antioxidant enzyme activities, suggested that flavonoids played a vital role in mitigating oxidative stress. These findings demonstrate that ABA priming can effectively enhance sweet sorghum seedling emergence in PSCs by accelerating emergence and boosting stress resistance.
