Waste to wealth: Waste liquid promotes rice growth in soda saline-alkali soil by improving Desulfocapsaceae abundance

Jianfeng Zhang,Xianfeng Lin,Xiaoyu Lin,Xu Song,Yu Wu,Fengyuan Jin,Hanchi Wang,Jing Liang,Jiejing Zhang

Lignocellulose sulfuric acid pretreatment is widely utilized in many industrial fields, but its waste liquid endangers the environment. While, the waste liquid has potential to promote plant growth in saline-alkali soil due to its strong acidity and high organic matter content. Therefore, the waste liquid was innovatively used to promote rice growth in soda saline-alkali soil, and a novel growth promotion mechanism revealed. This waste liquid promotes rice growth by lowering pH and optimizing microbial community of rice rhizosphere, especially increasing Desulfocapsaceae abundance. Desulfocapsaceae reduced sulfate into H 2 S, which increased the content of abscisic acid (ABA) and betaine in rice, thereby promoting rice growth in saline-alkali soil. The waste liquid increases rice yield in soda saline-alkali land by about 17 %. This study addresses two challenges simultaneously: the sustainable and high value-added management of industrial wastewater and the enhancement of crop growth in challenging saline-alkali soils. This study is of great significance to biomass energy utilization and saline-alkali repair.

Synergistic effects of Ca-bentonite and in-situ layered double hydroxide formation in ameliorating saline-alkali soil

Shuteng Diao,Wenqing Ma,Yiping Wang,Xuhui Zhao,Fazhi Zhang,Xiaodong Lei

Improving saline-alkali soil requires cost-efficient and stable technologies. In this study, a novel technology combining in-situ super-stable mineralization with Ca-bentonite was successfully applied to ameliorate saline-alkali soil. A simulation experiment was conducted on Ca-bentonite in solution to validate its feasibility, and in-situ mineralization using humic acid, Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O, and Ca-bentonite was performed to treat saline-alkali soil. Additionally, climate modeling and field experiments were employed to investigate the effects of this technology on soil physicochemical properties, crop growth, and crop yield. Under natural conditions, Ca-bentonite can transform into Na-bentonite via cation exchange with Na + . The results from the in-situ mineralization experiment showed that the soil pH, total content of CO 3 2− and HCO 3 − , Na + content, electrical conductivity, and bulk density decreased from approximately 10.30 to below 9.00, 7.81 to 1.53 g/kg, 7.20 to 1.51 g/kg, 2741 to 552 μS/cm, and 1.63 to 1.24 g/cm 3 , respectively. Furthermore, the germination rate of corn increased from 0 % to 83.3 % in climate simulation experiments. Field trials conducted in Inner Mongolia and Jilin, China, further demonstrated significant improvements in soil properties. The seedling emergence rates for corn and oats significantly increased, rising from 0 % to over 85 % and 95 %, respectively. Correspondingly, crop yields reached 323 kg/hm 2 for corn and 182 kg/hm 2 for oats. Together, our study introduces a novel, cost-effective, and efficient technology to enhance crop growth by mitigating soil salinity and alkalinity. This approach provides a new perspective for alleviating salt-alkali stress and contributes to the advancement of healthy and sustainable agricultural practices.

Enhancing the phytoremediation of petroleum-contaminated arid saline-alkali soil through irrigation-intercropping system combined with surfactants

Xiaokang Li,Yinfei Wang,Ning Li,Yuhong Su

In the Xinjiang oilfield exploitation area, the natural attenuation of petroleum hydrocarbons and plant growth is inhibited by the arid environment and saline-alkali soil conditions. By measuring the spatial distribution of salinity , alkalinity, and petroleum contamination in soil under drip irrigation (DRI), along with plant physiological indices, soil microbial abundance, and the remediation efficiency of plant intercropping systems, this study explored the impact of various concentrations of mixed surfactants on plant remediation capacity in two different local soil types under DRI. The results demonstrated that DRI facilitated the lateral migration of salt-alkali in the soil and increased plant growth at the DRI point. Compared to a ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) monoculture , the combined biomass of cotton ( Gossypium spp. ) and ryegrass in a ryegrass-cotton intercropping system increased by 35.6% in loamy soil, and the phytoremediation efficiency of petroleum-contaminated soils in the intercropping system did not decrease. Periodic DRI with surfactants mitigated the downward migration of petroleum hydrocarbons, reducing the risk of underground pollution, and increased the abundance of petroleum-degrading bacteria as well as the efficiency of the intercropping system in remediating the soil. The intercropping system in loamy soil exhibited a more pronounced synergistic effect among the remediation elements than in sandy soil . This study demonstrated that the periodic application of surfactants and implementation of intercropping systems under DRI can effectively reduce petroleum pollutants in soil and can be considered a promising alternative for the phytoremediation of petroleum-contaminated saline-alkali soils in arid regions.

Comprehensive evaluation of the risk system for heavy metals in the rehabilitated saline-alkali land

Xin Xu,Lin Guo,Shaobo Wang,Meng Ren,Pengjie Zhao,Ziyi Huang,Hongjun Jia,Jinhang Wang,Aijun Lin

A comprehensive assessment of the heavy metal system in the rehabilitated saline-alkali land holds significant importance, as the in-situ remediation process utilizing amendments substantially alters the initial physicochemical properties of the soil, which could lead to the migration or reactivation of previously stabilized heavy metals. In this context, the present study aims to evaluate the heavy metal content and health risk within the improved saline-alkali soil-plant system. Moreover, a comprehensive evaluation based on the TOPSIS-RSR method is carried out to accurately gauge the soil health status. The findings indicate that the modification process has an impact on the concentrations of heavy metals in the soil and crops, causing either an increase or decrease. However, the level of heavy metal pollution in the improved saline-alkali soil and rape remains within safe limits. The results of the migration of heavy metals after amendment application indicated that the migration of heavy metals in the soil was influenced by the properties of the heavy metals, the composition of the amendment, and leaching. Furthermore, the total non-carcinogenic hazard quotients in the soil and rape were within the safe threshold for all populations. The findings provided novel insights into the status and risk assessment of the pollution of improved saline-alkali soil.
