In the marine service environment, metal materials have a serious risk of corrosion. The corrosion rate of metal materials will be accelerated by the dual action of temperature change and alkali salt in saline-alkali environment. In order to delay the metal materials’ corrosion rate and prolong their service life, this paper used a CeO2–GO (4:1) nanocomposite prepared by the hydrothermal synthesis method to make an anticorrosion coating. The anticorrosion performance was evaluated by stereo microscope and 3D images of the corrosion site were fitted for calculation. The state evolution of the CeO2–GO (4:1)/EP coating immerged in a simulated saline-alkali solution was studied by open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical alternating current impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Mott–Schottky curve and Tafel curve. The results indicated that CeO2–GO (4:1) nanocomposites exhibited good resistance compared with graphene oxide and nano cerium oxide in a simulated saline-alkali environment. The research in this paper lays a firm theoretical foundation for the application of nano cerium-oxide-modified graphene oxide anticorrosive coating in saline-alkali environment engineering.Keywords:CeO2–GO;corrosion depth;saline-alkali;anticorrosion

Lignocellulose sulfuric acid pretreatment is widely utilized in many industrial fields, but its waste liquid endangers the environment. While, the waste liquid has potential to promote plant growth in saline-alkali soil due to its strong acidity and high organic matter content. Therefore, the waste liquid was innovatively used to promote rice growth in soda saline-alkali soil, and a novel growth promotion mechanism revealed. This waste liquid promotes rice growth by lowering pH and optimizing microbial community of rice rhizosphere, especially increasing Desulfocapsaceae abundance. Desulfocapsaceae reduced sulfate into H 2 S, which increased the content of abscisic acid (ABA) and betaine in rice, thereby promoting rice growth in saline-alkali soil. The waste liquid increases rice yield in soda saline-alkali land by about 17 %. This study addresses two challenges simultaneously: the sustainable and high value-added management of industrial wastewater and the enhancement of crop growth in challenging saline-alkali soils. This study is of great significance to biomass energy utilization and saline-alkali repair.

In arid and semi-arid areas, the remediation of saline-alkaline soils polluted by organic contaminants is challenging. In this study, the adsorption–photocatalysis synergistic removal of organic contaminants was realised using the MIL-88A(Fe) catalyst, and the saline-alkaline soils were remediated simultaneously. The adsorption isotherm of catalyst conformed to Langmuir model, and the photocatalytic degradation of PHE in an optimal visible light system achieved a PHE degradation efficiency of up to 86.2 % within 30 min. Based on the identification of active oxygen species, the PHE photocatalytic degradation was primarily driven by holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals (·O 2 - ), followed by hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). Furthermore, the determined physical and chemical properties of the saline-alkaline soils indicated that the soil pH value decreased to 6.82, effectively increasing the absorbable nitrogen content and improving soil fertility. This study offers a new strategy for the removal of organic contaminants under special soil medium conditions.

Aquatic water with carbonate alkalinity presents a survival challenge to aquatic animals. As an economically important crab, large quantities of Eriocheir sinensis are cultured in carbonate-type saline-alkali ponds, while the toxic effect on E. sinensis from carbonate alkalinity is still unclear. In this study, untargeted liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry metabolomics was performed to investigate the metabolic change caused by culture alkalinity, and confirmed distinct physiological response under gradient alkalinities. There were 39 differential metabolites obtained in the low-alkalinity group (4.35 mmol/L) versus control group, and “arachidonic acid metabolism” was enriched as a core response pathway. 93 differential metabolites were identified in the high-alkalinity group (17.43 mmol/L) versus control group, and a complex response net was manifested through integrated analysis, building by “steroid hormone biosynthesis”, “phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis”, “phosphonate and phosphinate metabolism”, “phenylalanine metabolism”, “mineral absorption”, “purine metabolism” and “carbon metabolism”. This indicated the mobilization of energy reserves and the suppression of protein and amino acid catabolism were manifested in E. sinensis gills to defense high alkalinity stress. In addition, the persistently regulation of key metabolites under various alkalinity, including diuretic compound “spironolactone” and the antiphlogistic compound “LXB 4 ”, suggested anti-inflammatory action and excretion regulation were initiated to defend the stress.

The salinization of the water environment caused by human activities and global warming has increased which has brought great survival challenges to aquatic animals. Crucian carp (Carassius auratus) is an essential freshwater economic fish with superior adaptability to saline-alkali water. However, the physiological regulation mechanism of crucian carp adapting to saline-alkali stress remains still unclear. In this study, crucian carp were exposed to freshwater or 20, 40, and 60 mmol/L NaHCO3water environments for 30 days, the effects of saline-alkali stress on the kidney were evaluated by histopathology, biochemical assays and metabolomics analysis from renal function, antioxidant capacity and metabolites level. Our results showed different degrees of kidney damage at different exposure concentrations, which were characterized by glomerular atrophy and swelling, renal tubular degranulation, obstruction and degeneration, renal interstitial edema, renal cell proliferation and necrosis. Saline-alkali stress could change the levels of several physiological parameters with renal function and antioxidant capacity, including creatinine (CREA), urea nitrogen (BUN), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and malondialdehyde (MDA). In addition, metabolomics analysis showed that differential metabolites (DMs) were involved in various metabolic pathways, including phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan biosynthesis, aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis, purine metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism, sphingolipid metabolism, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis and the TCA cycle. In general, our study revealed that saline-alkaline stress could cause significant changes in renal function and metabolic profiles, and induce severe damage in the crucian carp kidney through destroying the anti-oxidant system and energy homeostasis, inhibiting protein and amino acid catabolism, as well as disordering purine metabolism and lipid metabolism. This study could contribute to a deeper understanding the adverse effects of saline-alkali stress on crucian carp kidney and the regulatory mechanism in the crucian carp of saline-alkali adaptation at the metabolic level.Keywords:saline-alkaline stress;crucian carp;kidney;metabolomics;histopathology

Pyrolysis technique is considered to have great potential in the remediation of petroleum-contaminated soil, but it still has difficulties such as high energy consumption for the degradation of complex petroleum hydrocarbons and the deterioration of soil quality after treatment. In this study, the low-temperature rapid catalytic pyrolysis was realized using Beta zeolite to assist in remediating weathered petroleum-contaminated saline-alkali soil. Under the action of Beta zeolite, the removal efficiency of petroleum hydrocarbons reached 81% after pyrolysis treatment for 10 min at 250 °C, which was reduced to regulatory standard. The pyrolysis behavior and mechanism revealed that the addition of Beta zeolite effectively reduced the activation energy of C-C and C-O bonds cleavage in petroleum hydrocarbon macromolecules due to the strong acidity of Beta, meanwhile the quality of recovered oil from pyrolysis was improved. Additionally, the analyses of soil physicochemical property indicated that the harmless graphitic C generated from the degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons increased the organic matter in the soil, and the addition of Beta zeolite enhanced soil water retention capacity and reduced the soil alkalinity, thus improving the ecological function of saline-alkali soil. This study provides a new strategy for the removal of organic pollutants under special soil media conditions.

Petroleum extraction and its organic pollutants have numerous negative consequences on the composition and ecological function of grasslands, such as vegetation degradation, reduction in species diversity, and salinization. Thus, finding a comprehensive method for polluted soil and restoring grasslands faces many challenges, and the mechanism to influence soil environments and microbial community composition remains unclear. In this study, container experiments explored the potential of sulfonic acid group (–SO 3 H groups) modified biochar combined with isolated bacterium (named Y-1, Acinetobacter- spp.) on physicochemical properties and microbial communities of polluted soil. The results show that modified biochar and Y-1 combined addition had the highest petroleum degradation rate (39.4%), and soil nutrients such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), available nitrogen, invertase and urease activities in CK were decreased by 35.4, 12.1, 30, 43.2 and 32.5% compared to treatments. The contents of available phosphorus in CM treatment were increased 2.4 times compared to CK. The –SO 3 H groups efficiently improve salinity by accumulating Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ and inhibiting the aggregation of Na + . The correlation heatmap indicated that soil organic carbon, total nitrogen and CEC markedly interact with microbial communities. High-throughput sequencing indicated that the biomarkers enriched by the present integrated treatment are crucial for stimulating nitrogen and phosphorus cycles. The results indicate that -SO 3 H groups modified biochar, and Y-1 has great potential to serve as a novel bioremediation technology to remediate soil from petroleum pollutants and alkalization and achieve better restoration of degradation grasslands. Improving saline-alkali soil requires cost-efficient and stable technologies. In this study, a novel technology combining in-situ super-stable mineralization with Ca-bentonite was successfully applied to ameliorate saline-alkali soil. A simulation experiment was conducted on Ca-bentonite in solution to validate its feasibility, and in-situ mineralization using humic acid, Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O, and Ca-bentonite was performed to treat saline-alkali soil. Additionally, climate modeling and field experiments were employed to investigate the effects of this technology on soil physicochemical properties, crop growth, and crop yield. Under natural conditions, Ca-bentonite can transform into Na-bentonite via cation exchange with Na + . The results from the in-situ mineralization experiment showed that the soil pH, total content of CO 3 2− and HCO 3 − , Na + content, electrical conductivity, and bulk density decreased from approximately 10.30 to below 9.00, 7.81 to 1.53 g/kg, 7.20 to 1.51 g/kg, 2741 to 552 μS/cm, and 1.63 to 1.24 g/cm 3 , respectively. Furthermore, the germination rate of corn increased from 0 % to 83.3 % in climate simulation experiments. Field trials conducted in Inner Mongolia and Jilin, China, further demonstrated significant improvements in soil properties. The seedling emergence rates for corn and oats significantly increased, rising from 0 % to over 85 % and 95 %, respectively. Correspondingly, crop yields reached 323 kg/hm 2 for corn and 182 kg/hm 2 for oats. Together, our study introduces a novel, cost-effective, and efficient technology to enhance crop growth by mitigating soil salinity and alkalinity. This approach provides a new perspective for alleviating salt-alkali stress and contributes to the advancement of healthy and sustainable agricultural practices.

The management of deserts and saline-alkali sandy soils requires a large number of efficient and economical sand-fixing agent. However, the preparation of sand-fixing materials with excellent overall performance is still a great challenge. In this work, a sand-fixing agent with amphiphilic polyelectrolyte (ASL-PVA) was prepared by graft copolymerisation of sodium lignosulfonate (SL) with cationic (DMDAAC) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The sand fixation of ASL-PVA was evaluated using typical saline-alkali sandy soils from the desert topsoil of Inner Mongolia, China. The anionic, cationic and benzene ring structure of ASL-PVA give it excellent water retention, adhesion and degradation resistance in saline-alkali sandy soils. The antipolyelectrolyte effect between ASL-PVA and soluble salt ions can improve its salt tolerance. Moreover, lignin as a precursor of humus makes ASL-PVA also has the properties of improving the physicochemical properties of saline-alkali sandy soils and promoting plant growth. The ASL-PVA sand-fixing agent demonstrates promising application potential in saline-alkali sandy soil improvement and desert restoration.

The ecological conditions of freshwater aquaculture are deteriorating by degrees in recent years. Consequently, the comprehensive utilization of saline-alkaline water has garnered increasing societal attention. Here, crucian carp ( Carassius auratus ) were exposed to 20, 40 mmol/L NaHCO 3 for 30 days (T, F group). Metabolomic analyses were conducted using UPLC-QTOF/MS, complemented by biochemical and microbiology profiling to elucidate the damage of the saline environment to the intestinal microbial structure, which in turn interfered with the energy metabolism. It was observed that carbonate alkalinity (CA) exposure not only caused intestine oxidative stress but also changed the levels of several digestive enzymes, including α-amylase (AMS), chymotrypsin (CHY), lipase (LPS). Metabolomic analysis identified 22 different metabolites (DEMs) in T group and 77 DEMs in F group. MetaboAnalyst analysis indicated that these metabolites are primarily involved in energy-related pathways, including the citric acid cycle, galactose metabolism, and glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism. Intestinal microbial diversity and community composition were altered under carbonate alkalinity exposure, with increase in Proteobacteria abundance and decline in Firmicutes, abundance alongside enrichment of Sphingomonas . Herein, saline-alkaline stress disrupted the physiological homeostasis of the crucian carp intestine, leading to microbial dysbiosis and energy metabolic imbalance. This study provides a theoretical foundation for understanding the stress response of the crucian carp intestine and the role of the intestinal microbiome in host resilience under adverse environmental conditions.

Solar evaporation generation is a promising method for purifying high salinity water using renewable solar energy. However, the design for the efficient antifouling solar-thermal water evaporation of low-cost systems remains a challenge. Here, a simple, anti-oil-fouling and macroporous aerogel based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), sodium alginate (SA), and polyaniline (PANi) was prepared by an in situ polymerization and freeze-drying technique. Solar water evaporation experiments were performed on the aerogel under one-sun illumination. Because of the synergistic effects of the abundant macroporous structure, roughness of the surface, and hydrophilic polymeric matrix, the aerogel displayed high solar absorption, and superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic surface properties. As a result, under one-sun illumination, the aerogel had a maximum solar-thermal efficiency of 91.5% and an evaporation rate of 1.46 kg m−2 h−1. More importantly, the aerogel exhibited almost identical evaporation performance in oily wastewater and saline alkali water. After 25 cycles, the photothermal conversion efficiency was found to be 87% and the aerogel was still resistant to oil contamination. The high solar vapor generation rate and antifouling functionality make the macroporous aerogel a promising material for solar-thermal water desalination, even in oil-contaminated water.

It is crucial to design the novel low-cost and salt-tolerant superabsorbent for safeguarding food security and achieving sustainable agriculture. Herein, the porous superabsorbent composites with excellent salt tolerance were fabricated by redox-initiated grafting polymerization using water-based Pickering foam template co-stabilized with solid waste of coal gasification slag and plant particles Sapindus mukorossi pericarp . The stabilization mechanism of Pickering foams, swelling performance and salt-resistance of porous superabsorbent composites were studied in detail. Due to the abundant porous structure and the presence of coal gasification slag, the obtained superabsorbent composites exhibited rapid swelling rate and excellent water absorption capability, and the maximum water absorption in distilled water and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution reached 910 g/g and 126 g/g after 30 min, respectively. As 1.5 wt% the optimal superabsorbent composites was added into the saline-alkali soil, the growth of cabbages was significantly improved, and the plant height and chlorophyll content increased by 45.0% and 12.5%, respectively. This work served as a significant reference for preparing novel environmentally friendly water-saving materials for arid saline-alkali soil improvement.
