Solar-driven evaporation has received widespread attention in obtaining fresh water from seawater and wastewater. However, a major challenge in this process is maintaining a high evaporation rate, while preventing salt accumulation. Herein, a hydrophilic tannic acid (TA)-induced polypyrrole (PPy) coating layer with a controllable thickness was developed on nonwoven fabric using a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique. TA along with pyrrole (Py) molecules was first deposited on the substrate surface through noncovalent interactions. Then, Fe3+ was bonded with TA through metal coordination, acting as an oxidant for the polymerization of Py molecules. After the LbL cycle process, a uniform TA/PPy coating was formed on the fabric surface, exhibiting excellent hydrophilicity and solar absorption performance. The roof-structure evaporation system was then built by placing the fabric on the roof-structure support, ensuring that seawater flows from top to bottom. This structure helps to remove the concentrated brine from the fabric at the bottom of the evaporator, thereby preventing the accumulation of salt crystals. This design results in a high evaporation rate of 2.67 kg m–2 h–1 and a comparable evaporation efficiency of 89.6% under 1 sun irradiation. It is possible to achieve rapid and continuous evaporation even with high-concentration saline water containing 21% NaCl. Therefore, this study provides a simple construction of TA/PPy coatings suitable for different substrates and demonstrates the design of a roof-structure evaporation system for efficiently producing fresh water from seawater and high-salinity wastewater.

In the Changqing area, over 23.6% of gas wells produce less than 0.1 × 104 m3/d of gas daily, posing a challenge to gas field sustainability. Laboratory analysis of scale samples from three wells and formation water analysis via inductively coupled plasma revealed soluble salt as the primary well blockage, with sodium chloride and calcium chloride comprising 48.0–81.2% of total content. The G3# well blockage contains a small amount of quartz from acid-insoluble components of carbonate acidification. Formation water from all wells exhibited high salinity (up to 153 g/L) with a calcium chloride water type. Scanning electron microscopy and EDS confirmed halite and quartz features in blockage samples. Theoretical calculations show salt crystallization when tubing pressure falls below 10 MPa and daily water production is <1.0 tons/day. Lower production leads to lower tubing pressure and higher salt precipitation at the bottom of the well. For G1# and G2# blockages, HCl dissolves >90%, and water >85%, making them suitable removal agents. For 3# blockage, mud acid with >80% dissolution is recommended. Chemical methods effectively clean the wellbore and formation. Optimized blockage removal measures increase tubing pressure and daily production by 2.18 and 4.05 times, respectively. This study offers insights into addressing well blockage challenges in low-producing gas wells.

Solar desalination has received great attention as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective way to desalinate seawater. In this paper, a melamine sponge composite polypyrrole (MSPPy) evaporator was prepared by in-situ polymerization of Pyrrole (Py) on a melamine sponge (MS). PPy has an efficient light absorption ability. The large aperture network structure of MS can realize multiple reflections of light and greatly increase the absorption of light. Their synergistic effect makes the light absorption efficiency of the MSPPy evaporator reach 96.97%. Under one sun, the average evaporation rate of 1.886 kg⋅m −2 ⋅h −1 and energy conversion efficiency of 96.8% were achieved during 10 h. Moreover, the evaporator has an edge-priority crystallization function, which enables it to work for a long time in a high-salt environment. It works continuously for 12 h in simulated seawater with a salinity of 20% without further accumulation of salt crystals on its surface. More important, it can rapidly diffuse accumulated salt into the bulk water at night. This study provides a new idea for the application of solar steam generation technology in high-salt wastewater treatment.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation is an attractive method for seawater desalination , but the solid-salt crystallization on solar-absorber severely shelters sunlight and thus deteriorates the evaporation rate . To solve this problem, herein we have reported vertically symmetrical evaporator based on cotton-Cs x WO 3 fabrics. Cs x WO 3 nanorods have been prepared and then coated on cotton fabrics. The resulting cotton-Cs x WO 3 fabrics exhibit broad UV-Vis-NIR photoabsorption from 200 to 2500 nm with solar absorbance efficiency of 90.5%. Subsequently, by coating two similar cotton-Cs x WO 3 fabrics on double surfaces of a cotton-embedded polystyrene (PS) foam, vertically symmetrical evaporator has been designed and constructed. When the evaporator is floating on NaCl solution (3.5 wt%), cotton-Cs x WO 3 fabric on top surface can absorb light under solar irradiation (1.0 kW m −2 ), conferring a high evaporation rate of 1.56 kg m −2 h −1 with an efficiency of 86.8%. When high-concentration (21 wt%) NaCl solution is used, the evaporation rate goes down from 1.52 to 0.53 kg m −2 h −1 within 8 h, due to the solid-salt crystallization on top surface. Importantly, the symmetrical evaporator can be self-cleaned by an inversion strategy (2 times h −1 ), conferring high and stable rate (1.53–1.58 kg m −2 h −1 ) in the 20-h cycling evaporation and thus having great potential in the practical seawater desalination.

Fiber-based photothermal materials for seawater desalination usage have garnered significant attention owing to their outstanding properties. However, traditional monolayer fabrics are prone to possess inherent inefficiencies such as high thermal dissipation and salt crystallization within the evaporation zone, especially reducing the evaporation efficiency during the long-term seawater desalination. Herein, a novel three-layered three-dimensional (3D) spacer carbon/polyester cotton spacer woven fabric (SWF) evaporator is designed. This SWF material was delineated into three distinct layers: an upper evaporate layer, a foundational water absorption layer, and a central water dedicated to water transition, thermal insulation, and salt crystallization. The rational three-layered 3D architecture guarantees the swift aqueous transition within SWF evaporator, simultaneously curtailing thermal losses from the top layer. The evaporation rate of 3D SWF, with 6 mm interval space, registered at 1.6721 kg · m−2·h−1 under a solar intensity of 1 kW · m−2. Furthermore, under conditions with a solar power of 1 kW · m−2 and a wind velocity of 2 m · s−1, the evaporation efficiency of liquid water from SWF, with a central layer height of 12 mm, culminated at 3.9742 kg · m−2·h−1, which validated its adeptness for the seawater desalination applications. The results of our research are helping to provide for efficient and stable methods of wastewater treatment, desalination, and drinking water collection.

The burgeoning solar interfacial evaporation (SIE) technology reveals enormous prospect to address the global freshwater crisis, but its application might be limited by a grossly neglected problem of inorganic salt scaling. Herein, based on the carbon nanotubes (CNTs)@carbon black (CB)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) evaporators, the scaling behavior and its influence on the SIE performance were investigated systematically in the two typical anti-salt modes, including the edge-preferential crystallization (T-type mode) and the enhanced convection with vertically aligned vessels (EC-type mode). The results revealed that the scaling occurred easily in both modes when only Ca 2+ and SO 4 2− co-existed in the feed water. Meanwhile, in the T-type mode, the scaling aggravated the NaCl crystallization, resulting in a coverage of NaCl crystals on the whole evaporator surface. For a high salt concentration (10.0 wt% NaCl) with SI (Ca 2+ +SO 4 2− ) = −0.13, the evaporation rate seriously decreased to ∼ 12.6% of its initial value after 12 h. On the contrary, the scaling behavior was significantly suppressed in the presence of Na + and Cl − ions in the EC-type mode. Furthermore, the slight scaling presented a negligible effect on the NaCl accumulation, which ensured a stable evaporation rate of 2.58 ± 0.10 kg m −2 h −1 under the same condition (10.0 wt% NaCl and SI of −0.13) for even 12 h irradiation under 2.0 sun. Therefore, it can be emphasized that developing novel evaporators not only requires a good anti-salt ability, but also possesses an excellent resistance to scaling for the practical application of SIE in the future.

Solar steam generation (SSG) has been considered as a promising method to produce fresh water from seawater. Due to high light absorption and excellent chemical stability, carbon nanotube (CNT) has been widely used for SSG. However, it is still challenge to simultaneously realize high water evaporation rate and energy efficiency for CNT based solar steam generator. Herein, ultralight anisotropic Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/carbon nanotube (A-Ti 3 C 2 T x /CNT) aerogels are designed and fabricated for highly efficient SSG. The combination of CNT and Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene endows the hybrid aerogel with high light absorption and effective localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), resuting in enhanced light-to-heat conversion efficiency. The porous structure of aerogel leads to multiple scattering and absorption, further contributing to the photothermal conversion process. Moreover, the low thermal conductivity of aerogel structure effectively reduces the heat loss to environment. Through tailoring the anisotropic channel, the A-Ti 3 C 2 T x /CNT hybrid aerogel with average channel size of 80 μm possesses most efficient water transport due to the capillary effect and formation of intermediate water. Therefore, the A-Ti 3 C 2 T x /CNT hybrid aerogel exhibits high average light absorption of 95.68% in the wavelength range of 200–2500 nm, excellent water evaporation rate of 2.10 kg m −2 h −1 under 1 sun irradiation (1 kW m −2 ) with a high energy efficiency of 93.4%, and remarkable durability with 7 days continuous water evaporation. The A-Ti 3 C 2 T x /CNT hybrid aerogel also shows high resistance to salt crystallization due to its high salt transport flux of 1.90 kg m −2 h −1 . This work offers a prospective strategy for constructing highly efficient solar steam generator with stable performance for practical application in seawater desalination.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SIE) is a low-energy, environmentally friendly seawater desalination technology with significant potential for water resource regeneration and resource recovery. However, challenges such as preventing salt crystallization fouling and maintaining high evaporation efficiency during prolonged seawater exposure persist. The Forward osmosis (FO) process can effectively reject salts in seawater, creating favorable conditions for the continuous operation of SIE. In this study, an integrated FO-SIE coupling process was developed using a custom-designed membrane module. A poly(acrylamide- co -isopropyl acrylamide) (PAM-NIPAM) three-dimensional double-network hydrogel evaporator was fabricated, with phlorizin (PHL) as a hydrophilic agent and graphene oxide (GO) as a photothermal agent. The system achieved an efficient evaporation rate of 3.05 kg m −2 h −1 . Following FO pretreatment with sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) as the draw solution (DS), the reverse solute flux (RSF) remained consistently below 0.7 g m −2 h −1 throughout the process, effectively preventing salt ion fouling in the evaporator. During continuous seawater purification, no salt crystallization was observed, and the evaporation rate sustained an average of approximately 2.80 kg m −2 h −1 . In contrast, in the separate FO process, the DS concentration gradually diluted over time. By integrating the SIE process and utilizing the hydrogel for continuous photothermal evaporation, the DS concentration was maintained, ensuring the sustained operation of FO. This study advances the development of energy-efficient membrane separation systems powered by solar energy and provides new insights into practical seawater desalination and anti-fouling strategies in SIE applications.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation presents significant potential for seawater desalination and wastewater purification. However, prolonged operation in marine environments often results in salt accumulation, which adversely impacts the performance and lifetime of system. Despite the progress in material design, achieving efficient evaporation while mitigating salt crystallization remains challenging in high-salinity water. In this study, we synthesized a hierarchically structured C 18 H 37 -MXene/PA/MS evaporator employing a simple yet effective methodology specifically designed for applications in high-salinity water environments. The evaporator features a dual-region configuration, with an upper hydrophobic light-absorbing layer comprising modified MXene and polyamide (PA) membranes and a hydrophilic lower layer consists of hydrophilic melamine sponge (MS). This innovative design, incorporating an ultra-thin polyamide interlayer, significantly enhances interfacial stability, thereby mitigating the interfacial separation typically observed in conventional Janus materials during prolonged usage. Furthermore, the meticulous control over the thickness of the hydrophobic layer (5.54 μm) ensures optimal thermal insulation properties of the material. Consequently, the C 18 H 37 -MXene/PA/MS evaporator demonstrates an impressive evaporation rate of 1.49 kg m −2 h −1 under 1 sun illumination, with a high energy efficiency of 92.8 %. Furthermore, the Janus architecture ensures steady performance in high salinity conditions, sustaining a high evaporation rate of 1.46 kg m −2 h −1 even in a 20 wt% NaCl solution. Furthermore, under natural sunlight, the daily freshwater yield reaches 8.91 kg m −2 . The exceptional evaporation efficiency and robust salt resistance highlight its strong potential for water desalination and wastewater treatment, contributing to the advancement of sustainable water resource management.

The use of organic–inorganic hybrid compounds containing tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS-OH) is one of the most promising approaches for using alkoxysilane-based formulations to improve the effectiveness of the consolidation of traditional silicate artifacts, such as ancient stone. Based on analysis of existing damaged potteries influenced by the crystallization of NaCl salt, the hybrid we prepared in this study provided a crack-free and homogeneous gel on the premise of appropriate PDMS-OH content. The consolidants were applied to samples prepared following procedures that simulate old pottery and the effect of the protective products was evaluated by characterizing the surface morphology, the determination of the consolidant uptake, color changes, water vapour permeability and several wet-dry cycles with salt. The best formulation found for the hybrid in the present work was made up of 10% PDMS-OH with TEOS, which showed a significant increase in compressive strength, with a value of 3.50 MPa at 3 mm depth of consolidation, similar to the sample treated with Primal SF(the commercial protective agents used for comparison purposes), which had 3.20 MPa in compressive strength at 2 mm depth of consolidation. Except for small color changes and excellent water vapor permeability, there was still no significant change, and the destructive effects from NaCl crystallization for the hydrophobic surface of the sample treated with hybrid material was different to what happened for the hydrophilic case in the original. Thus, this study has revealed, for the first time, the addition of an appropriate amount of PDMS-OH to TEOS helps to improve the mechanical properties, hydrophobic behavior and salt resistance of damaged pottery effloresced by the NaCl crystals; in addition small color changes and excellent water vapor permeability should also be taken into consideration.

Solar water evaporation is emerging as one of the most cost-effective and sustainable technologies for efficient seawater desalination . However, salt crystallization during solar desalination severely limits light absorption and reduces evaporation efficiency. Balancing the desirable evaporation rate and the suppressed salt crystallization is critical for long-term solar desalination, but remains a major challenge. In this work, 1T/2H MoS 2 nanoflower embedded in a macroporous PDMS sponge (MoS 2 /PDMS) was fabricated and used as a novel solar evaporator for efficient and durable solar desalination. Thanks to the broadband absorption of MoS 2 and the thermal insulating PDMS sponge, the MoS 2 /PDMS sponge presents a high evaporation rate of 1.47 kg m −2 h −1 and an evaporation efficiency of 81.5 % in pure water under one sun irradiation (1 kW m −2 ). Importantly, the MoS 2 /PDMS sponge with macroporous structure and wet-state hydrophilic wettability achieves efficient and durable solar desalination in simulated seawater (3.5 wt% NaCl solution), effectively suppressing salt crystallization. This finding offers a new way to design robust evaporators with structural flexibility, efficient evaporation and durable desalting for solar desalination.

Interfacial solar evaporation with directional salt crystallization offers a sustainable approach for the mineral recovery. However, its application to real industrial wastewater is hindered by co-precipitate of organic pollutants, leading to crystal contamination. In this study, we present a rationally designed solar evaporator featuring dual functionality of directional crystallization and organic contaminants adsorption. The innovation lies in the coupling of an inclined evaporation surface with multilayer functional structures: a top hydrophobic layer for efficient solar energy harvesting, a middle hydrophilic layer for organic contaminants interception and bottom water transport layers for controlled water delivery. By tuning the inclination angle and water transport layers to regulate the mass transport, the evaporator achieves directional salt crystallization and maintains a stable evaporation rate of 1.42 kg m⁻² h⁻¹ during long-term evaluation. Moreover, the integrated adsorption layer effectively retained organic pollutions and purified the crystal. Compared to salts obtained through conventional thermal crystallization, the organic pollution content of the recovered crystals was reduced by 60.4%. The system’s scalability and outdoor applicability were further validated through a scaled-up rooftop test. This integrated interfacial evaporation strategy offers a new avenue for refined crystal recovery and advanced industrial wastewater treatment beyond the capabilities of conventional evaporators.
