Advanced Braille recognition based on protein biomimetic skin mechanical sensors

Nianfeng Zhang,Ailing Yang,Andeng Liu,Guoxi Shao,Xixi Wang,Yingjin Luo,Zhihua Liu,Yating Shi,Na Li,Wenxi Guo,Wu Qiu,Dapeng Yang

Tactile perception, dominated by human skin, plays an important role in human-nature interaction, especially when visual perception is limited. The key to mimicking skin tactile perception is to address skin-like properties of materials and integration of biomimetic tactile functions. To be competent in bionic skin, composite silk fibroin (SF) films possessing high tensile properties (159.71 %) and hydrogels with elasticity (54.42 %) were prepared through a mesoscopic reconstruction strategy of SF materials, using fish scale gelatin molecules as mesoscopic templates to regulate the nucleation and crystallization kinetics of SF molecules. In addition, inspired by the mechanoreceptors, a bimodal protein bionic skin (BPBS) was prepared by horizontally integrating a single-electrode triboelectric sensor and a capacitive sensing array, which can work in sliding and pressing modes to mimic the sliding touch and pressing touch of the finger, respectively. The system achieves a 99 % Braille recognition accuracy in sliding mode through a deep learning algorithm, and Bluetooth technology enables real-time wireless Braille recognition in pressing mode, synergistically enhancing the robustness and practicality of BPBS. This research provides novel insights into enhancing human touch perception, human-computer interaction, and the advancement of intelligent prosthetics, marking a significant stride in the development of bionic skins with multimodal sensing capabilities.

A skin-like sensor for intelligent Braille recognition

Xue-Feng Zhao,Cheng-Zhou Hang,Hong-Liang Lu,Ke Xu,Hao Zhang,Fan Yang,Ru-Guang Ma,Jia-Cheng Wang,David Wei Zhang

A flexible skin-like tactile sensor as one of the key components in the next generation for robots should have the ability to perform real-time feedback, continuous measurement, and quantization of weak target signals in the real applications (e.g. intelligent Braille recognition). Herein, inspired by human skin, a novel flexible piezoresistive tactile sensor with high sensitivity and linearity is designed and fabricated. It is composed of three main parts including the random Gaussian distribution (RGD) spinosum on polydimethylsiloxane as the top substrate, the multilayer Ti 2 C-MXene film as the intermediate conductive filler , and the commercial polyimide-based interdigital electrodes as the bottom substrate. The working mechanism of RGD spinosum and Ti 2 C-MXene films in the flexible tactile sensor are clarified by COMSOL Multiphysics simulations and density functional theory calculations, respectively. The assembled sensor demonstrates ultrahigh sensitivity, large linearity, excellent cycling stability, and fast response speed in the milliseconds. Moreover, the development of advanced neural network technology makes it possible to realize intelligent skin-like sensor. In this study, it is the first time to realize real-time Braille effective intelligent recognition by such a flexible skin-like tactile sensor with the random decision forests algorithm. This study is of great significance to solve the social and public issues of information exchange for the vision-impaired or even the blind that has been highly concerned in recent years.

Integrated Sensing–Memory–Computing Artificial Tactile System for Physiological Signal Processing Based on ITO Nanowire Synaptic Transistors

Yu Zhang,Jiaqi Xu,Mengyao Wei,Liren Wu,Dalong Ge,Feiyang Xu,Jinbo Ming,Yuanbin Qin,Seeram Ramakrishna,Fengyun Wang

Real-time, reliable, and continuous monitoring of tactile signals is essential for the development of future human–machine interfaces. However, the weak tactile signals (such as pulses) and vast monitoring data propose significant challenges for traditional perceptual monitoring systems. Inspired by skin tactile perception, a neuromorphic physiological signal processing system is proposed by integrating indium tin oxide (ITO) nanowire synaptic transistors and biohydrogels. The external tactile information can be converted to electrical signals by a highly sensitive array of hydrogels. These electrical signals are then processed and transmitted through the ITO nanowire synaptic transistors, enabling precise sensing and analysis of complex tactile information. This system demonstrates significant potential for a wide range of applications, including but not limited to Braille recognition, where it can enable precise tactile feedback and interaction for individuals with visual impairments. Furthermore, it offers a versatile platform for the real-time acquisition, monitoring, and processing of physiological signals such as those related to muscle activity, heart rate, or neural responses. This work offers promising potential for next-generation intelligent healthcare monitoring, diagnosing, and treating applications.
