DC Output Water Droplet Energy Harvester Enhanced by the Triboelectric Effect

Shuangshuang Liu,Wei Xu,Jiayi Yang,Sida Liu,Yan Meng,Lingjie Jia,Guobin Chen,Yong Qin,Xiuhan Li

The rising of liquid–solid triboelectric nanogenerator has shed light on droplet energy harvesting technologies which is an important part of realizing high-entropy energy harvesting. However, the output of conventional triboelectric approach still needs to be further increased to meet the requirement of practical applications. Here, we report a DC output water droplet energy harvester (DC-WDEH) enhanced by the triboelectric effect. Instead of generating current through electrostatic induction as the traditional triboelectric nanogenerator, the proposed DC-WDEH combines the triboelectric effect and the salt battery theory to increase the current output. A peak short-circuit current output of 35 μA is achieved with NaCl solution droplet of 50 μL. Meanwhile, further increase in the short-circuit current and open-circuit voltage up to 110 μA and 1.8 V, respectively, can be achieved by a DC-WDEH array. Moreover, a motion sensor based on DC-WDEH is proposed to demonstrate its potential application in direction and frequency detection of droplet movement.

Superhigh charge density and direct-current output in triboelectric nanogenerators via peak shifting modified charge pumping

Gang Jian,Qingzhen Meng,Ning Yang,Liang Feng,Fengwei Wang,Yun Chen,Ching-Ping Wong

Due to the great potentials in self-powered sensors and micro-nano power sources, triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has attracted numerous attentions. However, enhancing charge density and realizing direct-current (DC) are long-term significant issues for TENGs. In this work, we investigated a DC TENG with outstanding electricity generation characteristics based on quasi- synchronous double-stage self-charge pumping. The TENG works in a contact-separation mode with a four-layered parallel structure. The TENG possesses a high open-circuit voltage of 2300 V, a high short-circuit current of 3 mA, a high power of 150 mW and a superhigh transferred charge of 20 μC at 4 Hz, which are significantly enhanced from those in single-stage pumping and non pumped counterpart TENGs. The property-improving mechanism lies in that through the unidirectional self-charge pump with a slight time difference among TENGs, negative halves are moved to the adjacent positive halves, leads to the widening, higher and DC outputs at the final terminal, which employs the Plancherel theorem for peak shifting in framework of energy conservation law . The TENG can power light emitting diodes , electronic devices and an electrophoretic deposition of pigment coatings. This work provides a method for developing high-performance DC TENGs with superhigh transferred charge for various applications.

Flexible Triboelectric Nanogenerator Arrays for Energy Harvesting and Direct Current Output via Solid-Liquid-Gas Interfaces Involving Liquid Metals

Jiangtao Guo,Liangfei Duan,Wen Yang,Qin Wang,Xiyun Feng,Yunbo Zhang,Yong Zhang,Zhong Lin Wang,Peizhi Yang

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) efficiently convert mechanical energy into electricity, offering unique advantages for powering wearable electronics. Key objectives for wearable TENGs include flexibility, and high power density output. Liquid metals (LMs) are emerging as a category of functional materials with both metallic and liquid properties at room temperature, which opens up broader opportunities for TENG applications. Herein, a concept is proposed for constructing a fully flexible triboelectric nanogenerator array for mechanical energy harvesting by using LMs. The LMs layers are embedded in a porous polytetrafluoroethylene (p-PTFE) film, resulting in a series of parallel friction interface arrays. The strong electronegativity of PTFE and the high electronic activity of liquid metals are explored, and the interface at the solid-liquid-gas three-phase junction is constructed to facilitate the energy conversion. Using mechanical triggering, the direct current pulse is generated and amplified at the solid-liquid interface, resulting in an open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) of 1080 V and a power density (P max ) of 12.44 W m − 2 . Furthermore, V oc generated by the device in the contact-separation mode amounted to 1690 V under ultrasonic (40 kHz) excitation. Consequently, this finding is anticipated to offer new opportunities in applications such as flexible electronics, mechanical energy conversion, and human-machine interaction interfaces.

Coupling Enhancement of a Flexible BiFeO3 Film-Based Nanogenerator for Simultaneously Scavenging Light and Vibration Energies

Han Xiao,Ji Yun,Wu Li,Xia Yanlong,Bowen Chris R.,Yang Ya

Coupled nanogenerators have been a research hotspot due to their ability to harvest a variety of forms of energy such as light, mechanical and thermal energy and achieve a stable direct current output. Ferroelectric films are frequently investigated for photovoltaic applications due to their unique photovoltaic properties and bandgap-independent photovoltage, while the flexoelectric effect is an electromechanical property commonly found in solid dielectrics. Here, we effectively construct a new form of coupled nanogenerator based on a flexible BiFeO 3 ferroelectric film that combines both flexoelectric and photovoltaic effects to successfully harvest both light and vibration energies. This device converts an alternating current into a direct current and achieves a 6.2% charge enhancement and a 19.3% energy enhancement to achieve a multi-dimensional "1 + 1 > 2" coupling enhancement in terms of current, charge and energy. This work proposes a new approach to the coupling of multiple energy harvesting mechanisms in ferroelectric nanogenerators and provides a new strategy to enhance the transduction efficiency of flexible functional devices.

AC/DC dual-type pressure and movement sensor based on the nanoresistance network

Kongsen Hu,Jiyuan Feng,Nan Lv,Zhiwei Lyu,Yuteng Zhang,Haifeng Zhang

Flexible pressure and movement sensors with dual-type signals have broad application potential in smart electronics and robotics. However, most devices usually require the assembly of various functional materials through a multistep and tedious process to realize the alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) dual-mode output, resulting in difficult-to-control sensor volumes, complicated structures, and flexibility limitations. Here, we develop a dual-type signal pressure and movement sensor via fabricating the electrospun [polyvinyl pyrrolidone/polyaniline]//[polyacrylonitrile/barium titanate] ([PVP/PANI]//[PAN/BTO]) bifunctional Janus nanofiber films (BJNFF), which is able to generate AC or DC signals in different working modes. In working mode I, the BJNFF can produce an AC voltage signal (2.33 V N −1 ) for detecting vertical pressure. In working mode II, by moving Al over the BJNFF, the BJNFF can follow the dynamic Schottky contact to generate electron migration, thereby producing a DC output voltage signal for slip sensing. As a result, BJNFF utilizes the AC and DC conduction characteristics of the nanoresistance network to achieve AC/DC output compatibility in one integrated sensing material by one-step construction. Moreover, the BJNFF exhibits high sensitivity and maintains stability after reciprocating motion. These findings provide an efficient way for developing multifunctional sensors and achieving flexible smart electronics.
