Thermal-responsive photonic crystals (PCs) have attracted considerable interest due to their triggerable and adjustable optical capabilities, which are promising for various applications. However, developing a mechanism for rapid and irreversible structural color transformation in PCs that enables contactless and inkless writing has significant research value. Herein, phase change polymers are incorporated into functional optical platforms capable of rapid and irreversible structural color transformation in response to thermal stimuli. In crystalline state, phase change polymers used as inverse opal scaffolds in photonic films produce structural color with high saturation. The collapse of the highly ordered inverse opal structure, driven by thermal-mediated transformation during the crystalline/amorphous conversion of phase change polymers, is identified as the primary mechanism for achieving rapid and irreversible structural color transformation. These significant color variations between the inverse opal and collapsed structures provide high color contrast and resolution. The photonic films exhibit excellent hydrophobicity, solvent resistance, and storage stability. Additionally, incorporating the photothermal material carbon black (CB) enhances color saturation and imparts efficient photothermal conversion ability to films. By modulating the photothermal effect via near-infrared (NIR) laser light, phase change polymer-based structural color photonic films can achieve a permanent configuration at 42 °C, resulting in high-resolution images. These outstanding features offer a feasible method for next-generation innovative inkless writing and printing.

With the increase in integration, functionality, and power density of electronic devices, they need visual temperature sensing materials to intuitively monitor local temperature on the surface of electronic components. However, these materials still face challenges in developing reversible optical signal switching and improving visibility in response to external temperature changes. This work introduces free-standing quasi-amorphous arrays with fast structural color rendering behavior and high color visibility for visually specific temperature monitoring. The arrays employ the integration phase change polymers and polysulfide (PSF) microsphere quasi-amorphous arrays, enabling reversible structural color rendering behaviors in response to temperature changes. The PSF microsphere quasi-amorphous arrays exhibit high color visibility, stability against photobleaching, and further suppress interference from observation angles during temperature monitoring. Structural color rendering of different arrays occurs at 10.94 °C, 19.2 °C, 41.3 °C, and 54.1 °C, which is derived from thermally stimulated optical transparency switching in the crystalline region of phase change polymers. Following this principle, the designed visual temperature sensing label achieves reversible color switching between white and structural colors in response to external temperature changes. This label can be used to monitor temperature over a wide temperature range of simulated electronic chips, maintaining excellent stability after 100 cycles. Therefore, free-standing quasi-amorphous arrays offer a technique for reversible temperature-dependent structural color rendering, providing new opportunities for visually specific temperature monitoring.

Herein, we report a remotely controlled soft robot employing a photoresponsive nanocomposite synthesized from liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs), high elastic form-stable phase change polymer (HEPCP), and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Possessing a two-stage deformation upon exposure to near-infrared (NIR) light, the LCE/HEPCP/MWCNT (LHM) nanocomposite allows the soft robot to exhibit an obvious, fast, and reversible shape change with low detection limitations. In addition to the deformation and bending of the LCE molecular chains itself, the HEPCP in the composite material can also be triggered by a reversible solid–liquid transition due to the temperature rise caused by MWCNTs, which further promotes the change of the LCE. In particular, the proposed photodriven LHM soft robot can bend up to 180° in 2 s upon NIR stimulation (320 mW, distance of 5 cm) and generate recoverable, dramatic, and sensitive deformation to execute various tasks including walking, twisting, and bending. With the capacity of imitating biological behaviors through remote control, the disruptive innovation developed here offers a promising path toward miniaturized untethered robotic systems.

Adjusting sunlight and thermal radiation from windows is important in efficient energy-saving applications. A high solar modulation (ΔTsol) capability as well as a high luminous transmittance (Tlum) are the ultimate aim of smart windows. In this study, hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), W-doped VO2, and poly-N-iso-propylacrylamide (PNIPAm) composite hydrogel films were produced. The sample was prepared between two glasses to constitute a smart window with a sandwich construction structure, which exhibits a high Tlum of 87.16%, a ΔTsol of 65.71%, and a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of 29 °C. The practical applications of conventional PNIPAm hydrogels are limited by the volume contraction of phase transition. Here, this challenge is addressed by the simple method of combining with HPC. The PNIPAm-2.5 wt % HPC hydrogels possess thermo-responsive contractility with a volume shrinkage rate of 8.5%. Even after 100 high- and low-temperature cyclic durability tests, the smart windows still exhibit a high solar modulation capability.

There is an urgent demand for flexible multifunctional sensitive electronic devices in several potential applications, including personalized health monitoring, human motion detection, human–machine interfaces, soft robotics, and so on. Although exciting progress has been witnessed in recent decades, the excessive dependence on inorganic sensors and flexible substrates makes it difficult to attain multi-function sensing and excellent flexibility simultaneously, as well as their complicated fabrication, technical barriers and high cost. Herein, we report on a family of flexible multi-functional sensitive nanocomposites consisting of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) uniformly distributed in a high elastic form-stable phase change polymer (HEPCP) that exhibit dramatic response to infrared light (IR), temperature and tensile stress in air, together with outstanding flexibility and stretchability. Optimum sensitivity to on/off IR, temperature and tensile stress is demonstrated with electrical conductivity ratios of 103.7, 11.8 and 1084.0 times at room temperature, respectively. The excellent performance of the MWCNT/HEPCP nanocomposites was largely attributed to the cyclic and reversible changes of their MWCNTs conductive network owing to the reversible form-stable phase transitions and high elasticity of the HEPCP substrate, which subsequently affected the thickness of the interfacial HEPCP between adjacent conductive MWCNTs, and thereby the electron tunneling efficiency between the MWCNTs. The novel MWCNT/HEPCP nanocomposites open a new window for multi-function sensing of electronic skin.

Magnetoactive soft millirobots have made significant advances in programmable deformation, multimodal locomotion, and untethered manipulation in unreachable regions. However, the inherent limitations are manifested in the solid-phase millirobot as limited deformability and in the liquid-phase millirobot as low stiffness. Herein, we propose a ternary-state magnetoactive millirobot based on a phase transitional polymer embedded with magnetic nanoparticles. The millirobot can reversibly transit among the liquid, solid, and viscous-fluid phases through heating and cooling. The liquid-phase millirobot has elastic deformation and mobility for unimpeded navigation in a constrained space. The viscous-fluid phase millirobot shows irreversible deformation and large ductility. The solid-phase millirobot shows good shape stability and controllable locomotion. Moreover, the ternary-state magnetoactive millirobot can achieve prominent capabilities including stiffness change and shape reconfiguration through phase transition. The millirobot can perform potential functions of navigation in complex terrain, three-dimensional circuit connection, and simulated treatment in a stomach model. This magnetoactive millirobot may find new applications in flexible electronics and biomedicine.
