Liquid silicon infiltration (LSI) is a fast and low-cost method for the manufacturing of C f /SiC composites. However, due to the high reactivity of LSI process, the carbon fiber is easily to be eroded by liquid silicon. A recognized solution is to coat the fiber surface with a protective layer. Here, we report a preparation method of C f @SiC short fiber for carbon fiber protection in LSI process. First, C f @HTC short fiber with controllable thickness (1–10 μm) and uniform Hydrothermal carbon (HTC) coating was prepared by hydrothermal method . After the first LSI, silicon carbide layers which was derived from the reaction of HTC and liquid silicon had been successfully constructed on the carbon fibers with the thickness rang form 1–3 μm. This strategy demonstrates a tantalizing possibility and promising prospect to the preparation of light and high strength C f /SiC ceramic matrix composites with good fiber protection.

Reactive astrogliosis is the main cause of secondary injury to the central nerves. Biomaterials can effectively suppress astrocyte activation, but the mechanism remains unclear. Herein, Differentially Expressed Genes (DEGs) are identified through whole transcriptome sequencing in a mouse model of spinal cord injury, revealing the VIM gene as a pivotal regulator in the reactive astrocytes. Moreover, DEGs are predominantly concentrated in the extracellular matrix (ECM). Based on these, 3D injectable electrospun short fibers are constructed to inhibit reactive astrogliosis. Histological staining and functional analysis indicated that fibers with unique 3D network spatial structures can effectively constrain the reactive astrocytes. RNA sequencing and single-cell sequencing results reveal that short fibers downregulate the expression of the VIM gene in astrocytes by modulating the “ECM receptor interaction” pathway, inhibiting the transcription of downstream Vimentin protein, and thereby effectively suppressing reactive astrogliosis. Additionally, fibers block the binding of Vimentin protein with inflammation-related proteins, downregulate the NF-κB signaling pathway, inhibit neuron apoptosis, and consequently promote the recovery of spinal cord neural function. Through mechanism elucidation-material design-feedback regulation, this study provides a detailed analysis of the mechanism chain by which short fibers constrain the abnormal spatial expansion of astrocytes and promote spinal cord neural function.

Intraperitoneal sporadic tumor is a common and complicated syndrome in cancers, causing a high rate of death, and people find that intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IPC) can treat intraperitoneal sporadic tumors better than intravenous chemotherapy and surgery. However, the effectiveness and side effects of IPC are controversial, and the operation process of IPC is complicated. Herein, the injectable paclitaxel-loaded (PTX-loaded) electrospun short fibers are constructed through a series process of electrospinning, homogenizing, crosslinking, and subsequent polydopamine coating and folate acid (FA) modification. The evenly dispersed short fibers exhibited effective tumor cell killing and good injectable ability, which is convenient to use and greatly improved the complex operation procedure. Mussel-like protein poly-dopamine coating and FA modification endowed short fibers with the ability of targeted adhesion to tumors, and therefore the short fibers further acted as a kind of micro membrane that could release drugs to tumors at close range, maintaining local high drug concentration and prevent paclitaxel killing normal tissues. Thus, the target-adhesive injectable electrospun short fibers are expected to be the potential candidate for cancer treatment, especially the intraperitoneal sporadic tumors, which are hard to treat by surgery or intravenous chemotherapy.

Neural cell senescence hinders spinal cord nerve function recovery, and existing therapies that target senescent cell clearance haven’t effectively addressed cellular senescence. In this study, injectable short fibers that accurately maintain genome homeostasis in real time were developed, which for the first time reversed neural cell senescence by blocking the excessive intervention of cell inspection points. First, the oxidization-sensitive hybrid liposomes were prepared by combining Bakuchiol (BAK), a natural plant extract with the ability of DNA protection, with the oxidization-sensitive phospholipid S-PC. Subsequently, the short fibers regulating the cell inspection points (ISN@n-BAK) were constructed by further complexing the oxidation-sensitive hybrid liposomes with short fibers through π – π conjugation and catechol groups mussel-stimulated polydopamine (PDA). In vitro experiments demonstrated that ISN@n-BAK promotes neural stem cell differentiation into neurons and has anti-aging effects across various aging stages. In vivo, ISN@n-BAK responded to excessive ROS by triggering oxidation-sensitive liposomes to release BAK, protecting against DNA damage, suppressing aging-related gene expression in Cdkn2a and Cdkn2c and inhibiting inspection point restrictions. Bioinformatics showed that ISN@n-BAK reversed neural cell senescence and aided spinal cord nerve regeneration by activating the endogenous cell cycle, downregulating the PI3K-Akt pathway and upregulating the Rap1 pathway. This study introduces a novel therapeutic approach using short fibers that inhibit inspection points intervention to rejuvenate injured spinal cords. Graphical

Aerogel fibers are produced by integrating aerogel nanonetworks with structures possessing large aspect ratios, which provide enhanced thermal insulation, noise attenuation, and pollutant adsorption properties compared to those of bulk aerogels. The conventional method for fabricating aerogel fibers, which involves dynamic spinning, depends on the swift solidification of gels within a coagulation bath. This process inevitably affects the gel's internal three-dimensional network structure after it has assumed a formed state, posing substantial difficulties in regulating the pore structure and mechanical strength of the aerogel fibers. In this research, we present a novel technique for the fabrication of poly(methylsilsesquioxane) aerogel short fibers (PAFs), utilizing an ice template-based static molding process. Directional ice crystals act as "hard templates" to form prismatic structures within the wet gel matrix, whereas the electrostatic repulsion from the "soft template," cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), safeguards the fiber structure during its formation. Furthermore, the internal pore structure of the aerogel can be precisely controlled by modulating the aggregation states of CTAB micelles in water, which offers diverse reaction sites for silane hydrolysis. The fibers fabricated using this method exhibit large aspect ratios, low density, high specific surface area, and flexibility, displaying excellent insulation properties, stability at high and low temperatures, and hydrophobicity. They are suitable for use as functional fillers in high-performance wearable fabrics.

In situ forming injectable hydrogels hold great potential for the treatment of irregular wounds. However, their practical applications were hindered by long gelation time, poor mechanical performance, and a lack of a natural extracellular matrix structure. Herein, amino-modified electrospun poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (APLGA) short fibers with uniform distribution were introduced into gelatin methacrylate/oxidized dextran (GM/ODex) hydrogels. In comparison with the fiber aggregation structure in the PLGA fiber-incorporated hydrogels, the hydrogels with APLGA fibers possessed a uniform porous structure. The highly dispersed APLGA short fibers accelerated the sol–gel phase transition of the hydrogel due to the formation of dynamic Schiff-base bonds between the fibers and hydrogels. Furthermore, in combination with UV-assisted crosslinking, a rapid gelation time of 90 s was achieved for the double-crosslinked hydrogels. The addition of APLGA short fibers as fillers and the formation of the double-crosslinking network enhanced the mechanical performance of the hydrogels. Furthermore, the fiber–hydrogel composites exhibited favorable injectability, excellent biocompatibility, and improved cell infiltration. In vivo assessment indicated that the GM/ODex-APLGA hydrogels successfully filled the full-thickness defects and improved wound healing. This work demonstrates a promising solution for the treatment of irregular wounds.

The establishment of a reliable in vitro liver model for drug screening remains challenging with respect to tethering the growth of hepatocyte spheroids and adapting to the current high-throughput system. In the current study, short fibers are utilized as scaffolds for the generation of size-controlled hepatocyte spheroids that recapitulate in vivo hepatic phenotypes and functions. The spheroid formation is modulated by the length and galactose/RGD grafts of short fibers, and short 50 μm long fibers motivate the spheroid formation with optimal hepatic function. Short fibers distribute throughout the entire spheroid for tethering hepatocyte growth to form compact spheroids. Compared with scaffold-free spheroid culture on agarose-coated plates, the spheroid culture with short fibers achieves higher clearance rates of model drugs and provides a better prediction of the in vivo drug clearance rate with a correlation value of 0.886. In addition, the drug metabolism capability is highly sensitive to the inducers and inhibitors of metabolizing enzymes, and the responsiveness is maintained during 20 days of culture, exhibiting an efficient in vitro model for determining drug–drug interactions. Therefore, the spheroid culture with short fibers provides an easily manipulated strategy to maintain hepatocyte functions for a prolonged period and enable ready deployment in conventional multiwell plates and diverse organ-on-a-chip devices for high-throughput drug screening.

The disruption of endogenous electric field (EF) and subsequent degradation of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and joint wear are the fundamental pathological mechanisms underlying Osteoarthritis (OA). The key to reversing OA and promoting cartilage repair lies in restoring the endogenous electric field, improving lubrication performance between articular cartilage, and achieving a catabolic balance of ECM. In this study, we utilized short fiber fabrication technology and one-step surface dopamine grafting technology to construct a “PLA/ G@β-Gly /GO/PMPC” lubricated electroactive short fiber. By utilizing an “ultrasonic piezoelectric transducer” to generate electrical signals, we promoted ECM synthesis, restored endogenous EF, repaired hydration lubrication layer, and stabilized the endogenous electric field. This approach enables regeneration and optimization of articular cartilage while breaking free from the detrimental cycle associated with OA. Under ultrasonic stimulation at 1 W, 650 KHz frequency, and 50 % duty cycle, the lubricated electroactive short fiber generated a significant electrical signal of 1.31 V which upregulated Sirt1 expression in OA chondrocytes. It improved mitochondrial function and increased ATP capacity to 23.074 ± 1.87 pmol/min. Furthermore, incorporating different proportions of lubricating molecules (1:1, 1:4, and 1:8) into the material reduced the coefficient of friction (COF) between articular cartilages from approximately 0.725–0.693 to about 0.235. This improvement enhanced lubrication performance between articular cartilages by inhibiting ECM degradation and stabilizing endogenous EF. The innovative composite electrospun material exhibits great potential in promoting OA cartilage repair.

In this work, the electrospun short fiber-based oleogels (ESF O) were formed by thermal crosslinking. Gelatin and gluten nanofibers were obtained via electrospinning, then homogenized and transformed into short fiber dispersions. Through freeze-drying, electrospun short fiber-based aerogel (ESF-A) templates were obtained for oil adsorption. All ESF-A exhibited the micromorphology of loose fibrous pore structure and prominent changes of characteristic peaks in the thermal and infrared analyses. Moreover, the highly crosslinked templates owned excellent hydrophobicity and mechanical performances (elastic modulus: 0.25 kPa, yield strength: 14.56 kPa, compressive strength: 52.54 kPa, and the final compression recovery: 91.27%). Meanwhile, the oil adsorption/oil holding capacity could reach 76.56 g/g and 80.04%, respectively. Through thermal crosslinking, ESF-O presented good and controllable rheological/in vitro digestion properties, which were further confirmed by PCA analysis. According to different application conditions, ESF-O properties could be adjusted by different degrees of fiber addition or thermal crosslinking.

The ossification center serves as the foundation for bone development and its biologically heterogeneous structure provides an ideal microenvironment for bone tissue regeneration. However, mimicking the heterogeneous structure and function of ossification centers remains a substantial challenge. In this study, inorganic/organic composite zinc-doped calcium phosphate-mineralized microspheres were highly entangled with short fibers mimicking the extracellular matrix via charge coupling and electrospray microfluidic techniques, and the growth factor, PDGF-BB, was dynamically self-assembled with the short-fiber microspheres through π-π conjugation and dopamine catechol groups, successfully constructing the injectable biomimetic heterogeneous short-fiber microspheres (ZnCaP@NF-GF). ZnCaP@NF-GF features a unique fibrous network on its surface, enabling long-term anchoring in bone-defect regions through extracellular matrix interactions. PDGF-BB effectively recruits endogenous stem cells via the CXCR axis, whereas the sustained release of calcium ions significantly induces stem cells osteogenic differentiation via the MAPK/ERK signaling pathway. Concurrently, the sustained release of zinc ions promotes the generation of new vascular networks via the ERBB/ERK signaling axis. Ultimately, ZnCaP@NF-GF functioned as nucleation sites for the formation of biomineralized “bone islands.” Thus, ZnCaP@NF-GF provides new ideas for the regeneration of defective bone tissue by accurately simulating the structure and function of the ossification center.

Cellular respiration can provide energy for wound healing. However, some of retarded healing processes in local hyperglycemic environment suffer from a decrease in cellular adaptation to oxygen, thus reducing in situ oxidative metabolism. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) extracellular matrix (ECM) bionic short fibrous sponge was prepared for chronic diabetic wound healing and effectively regulated cellular respiration by enhancing cellular adaptation to oxygen and remolding the local tissue microenvironment. The 3D bionic sponge scaffold exhibited good cell adhesion, biocompatibility, bioactivity, and, most importantly, aggregated oxygen atoms on the graphene oxide (GO) surface. In an in vitro assay, the oxygen atom-concentrating short fibrous sponge activated monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), induced the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and effectively promoted angiogenesis in a hyperglycemic environment. The sponge was also applied to diabetic wounds in vivo to verify its roles in the promotion of angiogenesis and collagen deposition. These experiments confirmed the synergistic effect of GO with adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs), which could further promote diabetic wound healing. Therefore, oxygen atom-concentrating short fibrous sponges that regulate cellular respiration provide a new idea for the repair of poorly healing wounds by improving oxidative metabolism and have importantclinical significance. Graphical abstract The oxygen-rich characteristics of short fibrous sponges with aggregational oxygen atoms can optimize the water absorption performance of short fibers, effectively regulate cell respiration and improve tissue oxidation metabolism by improving the ability of cells to adapt to oxygen, and provide important application value for tissue damage repair in collaboration with ADSCs.

Bone defects typically result in bone nonunion, delayed or nonhealing, and localized dysfunction, and commonly used clinical treatments (i.e., autologous and allogeneic grafts) have limited results. The multifunctional bone tissue engineering scaffold provides a new treatment for the repair of bone defects. Herein, a three-dimensional porous composite scaffold with stable mechanical support, effective antibacterial and hemostasis properties, and the ability to promote the rapid repair of bone defects was synthesized using methacrylated carboxymethyl chitosan and icariin-loaded poly-l-lactide/gelatin short fibers (M-CMCS-SFs). Icariin-loaded SFs in the M-CMCS scaffold resulted in the sustained release of osteogenic agents, which was beneficial for mechanical reinforcement. Both the porous structure and the use of chitosan facilitate the effective absorption of blood and fluid exudates. Moreover, its superior antibacterial properties could prevent the occurrence of inflammation and infection. When cultured with bone mesenchymal stem cells, the composite scaffold showed a promotion in osteogenic differentiation. Taken together, such a multifunctional composite scaffold showed comprehensive performance in antibacterial, hemostasis, and bone regeneration, thus holding promising potential in the repair of bone defects and related medical treatments.
