With the ever-increasing demand for high power and high energy batteries, extensive researches devote to high voltage cathode materials. Graphite cathode-based dual-ion batteries (DIBs) possess the unique advantages of high working voltage (≈4.5−5.0) and high power, but still suffer from low coulombic efficiency and poor long-term stability mainly resulted by the serious oxidative decomposition of electrolytes and significant structural deterioration of graphite cathode. From the perspectives of simultaneously reinforcing the mechanical strength of graphite cathode and suppressing the decomposition of electrolytes via a cathode/electrolyte interphase (CEI), polyacrylic acid (PAA) is adopted as the surface modifier of natural graphite (NG). The mechanical stability of graphite cathode is significantly improved by virtue of the bonding interaction between PAA and binder, which is validated through both theoretical calculation and experimental observation. In addition, PAA contributes to the formation of a LiF-rich and homogeneous CEI through the preferential adsorption of anions, and effectively mitigates the cointercalation and decomposition of solvent. As the cathode material of DIBs, NG@PAA manifests fast charge/discharge capability and outstanding capacity retention of 73.9% after 8000 cycles. This work provides a surface modification strategy for optimizing the performance of electrode materials from multiple perspectives.

Dual ion batteries, which have emerged as a novel energy storage device in recent years, are highly valued for their high operating voltage, safety, and environmental friendliness, attracting significant attention. However, the safety characteristics of these batteries are greatly reduced due to the high flammability of conventional carbonate-based electrolytes. The development of a non-flammable electrolyte with high safety and excellent reversible plating/stripping characteristics is crucial for the advancement of potassium (K) −based dual ion batteries. Compared to high concentration electrolytes, the use of low electrolyte concentration limits the capacity derived from anion intercalation into the graphite layers. In this work, a 3.75 M KFSI/TEP:DMC (2:1 v/v) electrolyte was configured using non-flammable triethyl phosphate (TEP) as the main solvent, dimethyl carbonate (DMC) as the co-solvent, and potassium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (KFSI) as the salt. This electrolyte not only exhibits highly non-flammable properties but also demonstrates excellent plating/stripping reversibility in K||Al half batteries, achieving an average coulombic efficiency of ∼ 98.9 % over 1200 cycles. Furthermore, long-term reversibility tests conducted with K||K symmetric batteries indicate a cycle life exceeding 6000 h, which corresponds to more than 250 days of continuous operation. In conclusion, we assembled a K-based anode-free dual ion battery, with aluminum serving as the anode and graphite as the cathode, which exhibited an exceptional cyclic lifespan. At 0.2 A g −1 , the battery demostrated stable cycling for over 200 cycles, maintaining a capacity retention rate of 100 %. This research paves the way for the development of high-safety K-based anode-free dual ion batteries.

The electrochemical properties of anions as carriers in graphite-based dual-ion batteries (GDIBs) play an important role in achieving long cycling stability and high-rate performance. However, anion behavior in the electrolyte was neglected in previous studies. To balance high voltage and fast conduction, the anion behavior after introducing diluent in a highly concentrated electrolyte|high concentrated electrolyte (HCE) to form locally highly concentrated electrolyte|locally high concentrated electrolyte (LHCE) in GDIBs was deeply investigated. In contrast to the highly aggregated coordinated ion pairs in the HCE, more free anions can be attained in the LHCE without significant reunion. These free anions can rapidly migrate to the electrode surface under the electric field drive and then intercalate between graphite layers with a lower energy barrier. Meanwhile, an inorganic-rich interfacial layer with rapid ion conduction and a thinner thickness can be formed to prevent further decomposition of anions and stabilize the structure of the cathode. As a consequence, the dual-graphite DIBs achieved a superior capacity of 98.3% after 1000 cycles at a high rate of 200 mA g–1 in LHCE, and the corresponding pouch cells exhibited a stable cycling process. This work advances the understanding of anion chemistry, enabling the regulation of the anion status to enhance the electrochemical performance of GDIBs.

Dual-ion batteries (DIBs) are a viable option for large-scale energy storage owing to their high energy density, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, interfacial instability at both the cathode and anode in Li-graphite DIBs (LG-DIBs) contributes to poor cycling performance and failed energy storage, severely limiting their application potentials. Herein, a two-pronged strategy is used to improve the interfacial stability, synergistically stabilizing the graphite cathode by applying a rigid/inert surface coating while building a 3D framework on the lithium anode. The resultant LG-DIBs are ultrastable and achieve a long cycle life (capacity retention of 80% after 2700 cycles at 200 mA −1 ) in the all-climate temperature range from −25 to 40 °C. Ex situ characterization reveals that the cathode–electrolyte interphase on graphite is stabilized by suppressing the electrolyte decomposition and reducing graphite exfoliation. Simultaneously, the framework constructed on the lithium anode induces uniform and dendrite-free Li deposition owing to its 3D structure. This study not only contributes to the development of practical LG-DIBs but also points out a promising research direction for other new types of batteries.

Dual-ion batteries (DIBs) composed of a graphite cathode and a lithium anode are promising candidates for high-energy and high-power energy storage systems. However, graphite cathode undergoes rapid failure during the extended cycling and rapid charge/discharge mainly because of its structural breakdown and drastic resistance rise of cathode/electrolyte interphase (CEI) arising from the violent electrolyte decomposition at high voltage (4.5–5.0 V). Unlike the mainstream CEI modification strategy solely solving the problem of electrolyte decomposition, this work proposes a bifunctional CEI construction strategy that not only inhibits the electrolyte decomposition but also enhances the mechanical stability of graphite cathodes. Three pH-variable phosphates (LiH 2 PO 4 , Li 2 HPO 4 and Li 3 PO 4 ) are artificially coated on the surface of natural graphite (NG) particles through a green and low-cost wet coating route. The acidic LiH 2 PO 4 coating not only effectively suppresses the electrolyte decomposition through the formation of a conformal coating layer, but also considerably enhances the mechanical strength of NG cathode via a strong bonding between LiH 2 PO 4 and binder. The underlying mechanisms are elucidated through both theoretical calculations and empirical experiments. The optimized NG cathode is able to withstand fast charge/discharge at 60 C and exhibits exceptional capacity retention of 80.7% after 10,000 cycles 2 C.
