Hydrophobic oil absorbents with interconnected porous structure have been widely used in dealing with the pervasive environmental issue of oil spills. In this work, hydrophobic foams with 3D interconnected porous honeycomb structures of liquefied-larch-based polymer foam (LLB-PF) and its carbonized product liquefied-larch-based carbon foam (LLB-CF) was prepared from larch sawdust waste and used for oil and organics separation. The results revealed that the 3D interconnected and open-cell honeycomb structure of LLB-PF was formed simultaneously during self-foaming, which remained intact even after carbonization. The two ultralight foams, especially LLB-PF, exhibited remarkable oil/water selectivity. The foams exhibited efficient and rapid absorption capacities, not only for oils but also for organic solvents. LLB-PF and LLB-CF could absorb tetrachloromethane and epoxidized soybean oil up to 88 and 153 times their own weight, respectively. The recycle tests showed that LLB-PF and LLB-CF exhibited excellent absorption capacities even after five cycles, demonstrating an excellent cyclability. The high oil and organic solvent absorption performance along with the renewable and low-cost starting materials positions LLB-PF and LLB-CF foams as promising candidates with great potential for oil and organics cleanup. Keywords:oil absorbents;carbon foams;hydrophobicity;oil cleanup;wood materials

Petroleum leakage is a major groundwater contamination source, with chemical composition of water soluble fractions (WSFs) from diverse oil sources significantly impacting groundwater quality and source identification. The aim of this study was to assess impact of 15 diverse oils on groundwater quality and environmental forensics based on oil-water equilibrium experiments. Our results indicate that contamination of groundwater by gasoline and naphtha is primarily attributed to volatile hydrocarbons, while pollution from diesel, kerosene, and crude oil is predominantly from non-hydrocarbons. Rapid determination of the extent of non-hydrocarbon pollution in WSFs was achieved through a new quantitative index. Gasoline and naphtha exhibited the highest groundwater contamination potential while kerosene and light crude oils were also likely to cause groundwater contamination. Although volatile hydrocarbons in the WSFs of diesel and jet fuel do not easily exceed current regulatory standards, unregulated non-hydrocarbons may pose a more severe contamination risk to groundwater. Notably, the presence of significant benzene and toluene, hydrogenation and alkylation products (e.g., C4-C5 alkylbenzenes, alkylindenes, alkyltetralins, and dihydro-indenes), cycloalkanes in WSFs can effectively be utilized for preliminary source identification of light distillates, middle distillates, and crude oils, respectively.

Frequent oil spills have caused severe damage to marine ecosystems, necessitating the development of effective and sustainable methods for oil/water separation. This study utilized green-sourced bacterial cellulose and chitin as raw materials without the need of additional additives. Through freeze-drying and carbonization at 500 °C, a hydrophobic, oleophilic cellulose-based carbon aerogel (CBC) was synthesized. The results indicate that the optimal sample has a high specific surface area (489 m 2 /g), excellent oil absorption capacity (∼138 g/g), and remarkable hydrophobicity (with a water contact angle of 135°). Additionally, the carbon aerogel demonstrates good thermal stability, can be reused multiple times, and can effectively separate immiscible oil/water mixtures and stable water-in-oil emulsions. These findings suggest that CBC, as a scalable and eco-friendly material, holds great potential for marine oil spill remediation, offering new possibilities for advancing sustainable environmental restoration.

Marine pollution resulting from offshore oil spills poses significant threats to marine ecosystems, biodiversity, and human health. Consequently, developing efficient and eco-friendly oil-absorbent materials has emerged as critical for addressing this pressing environmental challenge. In this work, we successfully synthesized a novel three-dimensional porous foam with dual hydrophobicity and oleophilicity, fabricated through the integration of esterified orange peel (OP-E), polylactic acid (PLA), and carbon dots (CDs) for solar-assisted oil-water separation. Notably, the OP-E/PLA/CDs foam demonstrated exceptional absorption capacities, reaching 21–27 times its own weight for various low-viscosity oils. This enhanced performance stems from the esterification process, which substantially modifies the crystalline structure of cellulose to form an interconnected 3D network optimized for oil absorption. The incorporation of carbon dots substantially improved the composite's performance, boosting both solar-to-thermal conversion efficiency and thermal conductivity. Importantly, the esterification process introduced carbon-carbon double bonds from acrylamide molecules (rich in amide groups) into the cellulose matrix, yielding a foam with superior mechanical properties. The material maintained an impressive 95.6 % shape recovery ratio even under stress up to 500 g. Leveraging these advantageous properties, we developed an energy-free oil collection system capable of absorbing approximately 19.6 g of crude oil within 60 min. This work not only presents a scalable and cost-effective strategy for fabricating high-performance oil-absorbent materials but also establishes a practical zero-energy solution for offshore oil spill remediation.

Recurring oil spill accidents have been a global challenge and contribute to PAHs' heavy accumulation in marine sediments. The rapid bioremediation of PAHs with high concentrations in marine sediments has rarely been studied. In this study, four representative PAHs in crude oil were tested for fast anaerobic biodegradation. An efficient system for the anaerobic degradation of high-concentration PAHs was obtained using petroleum-acclimated marine sediments as inoculants in the treatment system. The degradation efficiencies of benzo[ b ]fluoranthene, benzo[ a ]pyrene, pyrene, and phenanthrene reached 0.21, 1.71, 3.89, and 4.10 mg/(L·d), respectively, which are 16, 2.8, 1.8, and 1.0 times higher than the reported values. Nitrate was preferred to sulfate as an electron acceptor. The acclimated sediment contains a high abundance of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria. The number and diversity of species in the treatment system supplemented with PAHs decreased, but the abundance of some hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria and hydrocarbon-intermediate utilising bacteria increased, and ecological succession was observed.

Oil spills frequently occur in the ocean, and adsorption is one of the effective ways to deal with oil spills. Compared with other adsorbent materials, biomass aerogel has superior selective adsorption capacity. CNF/SA aerogels with good mechanical properties (340 kPa at 90 % strain) and high adsorption capacity (88.91 g/g) were prepared by mixing cellulose nanofibers (CNF) with sodium alginate (SA) through bidirectional freeze-drying, ionic crosslinking, and surface modification to effectively solve the ocean oil spill problem. The bidirectional freeze-drying technology is a green and efficient technique for preparing layered microstructured composite aerogels. The prepared aerogels have a three-dimensional interpenetrating lamellar structure, low density (24.2 mg/cm 3 ), high porosity (97.85 %), and high hydrophobicity (WCA = 144.5°), can be calibrated and used repeatedly. It has potential applications in water-oil separation and can be used as an absorbent for effectively treating oil spills in the ocean environment.
