Study on the co-catalytic performance and mechanism of MoO2 in oil-contaminated wastewater treated by Fenton system

Shaodong Jing,Xiaolong Xiao,Zhen Liu,Mengyu Ma,Qian Li

Background In the treatment of organic wastewater, Fenton technology often produces iron sludge due to iron circulation obstruction, which inhibits the treatment efficiency and causes secondary pollution to the actual water. Methods In this study, MoO 2 was used as a cocatalyst to promote the effective cycling of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ in the Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 system, thus efficiently degrading total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs). The superiority of MoO 2 as co-catalyst was verified under different reaction conditions, and its mechanism was discussed. Findings The degradation rate of TPHs in the Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 /MoO 2 system (0.069 min −1 ) was about 14 times that of Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 system (0.005 min −1 ). Compared with the Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 system, the Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 /MoO 2 system not only had a wider pH adaptation range, but also could effectively remove TPHs under the interference of co-existing organic and inorganic anions. MoO 2 did not change the types of reactive species in Fenton system, but it enhanced the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by promoting the Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycling in the reaction system, and ·OH was the main reactive species of TPHs degradation.

Biodegradation of different petroleum hydrocarbons by free and immobilized microbial consortia

Tiantian Shen,Yongrui Pi,Mutai Bao,Nana Xu,Yiming Li,Jinren Lu

The efficiencies of free and immobilized microbial consortia in the degradation of different types of petroleum hydrocarbons were investigated. In this study, the biodegradation rates of naphthalene, phenanthrene, pyrene and crude oil reached about 80%, 30%, 56% and 48% under the optimum environmental conditions of free microbial consortia after 7 d. We evaluated five unique co-metabolic substances with petroleum hydrocarbons, α-lactose was the best co-metabolic substance among glucose, α-lactose, soluble starch, yeast powder and urea. The orthogonal biodegradation analysis results showed that semi-coke was the best immobilized carrier followed by walnut shell and activated carbon. Meanwhile, the significance of various factors that contribute to the biodegradation of semi-coke immobilized microbial consortia followed the order of: α-lactose > semi-coke > sodium alginate > CaCl2. Moreover, the degradation rate of the immobilized microbial consortium (47%) was higher than that of a free microbial consortium (26%) under environmental conditions such as the crude oil concentration of 3 g L−1, NaCl concentration of 20 g L−1, pH at 7.2–7.4 and temperature of 25 °C after 5 d. SEM and FTIR analyses revealed that the structure of semi-coke became more porous and easily adhered to the microbial consortium; the functional groups (e.g., hydroxy and phosphate) were identified in the microbial consortium and were changed by immobilization. This study demonstrated that the ability of microbial adaptation to the environment can be improved by immobilization which expands the application fields of microbial remediation.

Study on bioadsorption and biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons by a microbial consortium

Nana Xu,Mutai Bao,Peiyan Sun,Yiming Li

A microbial consortium isolated from Shengli oilfield polluted sludge was capable of degrading naphthalene (NAP), phenanthrene (PHE), pyrene (PYR) and crude oil. It performed high biodegradation activity and emulsifiability for petroleum hydrocarbons, and was tolerant to 6.2   mM Cu 2+ , 2.7   mM Zn 2+ and 9.5   mM Pb 2+ . Biodegradation rates of NAP , PHE, PYR and crude oil were 53%, 21%, 32% and 44% in the presence of heavy metal (Cu 2+ , 1.7   mM and Zn 2+ , 2   mM), respectively. Exploration on the adsorption and uptake of petroleum hydrocarbons by microbe suggested the stability of surface adsorption and cell uptake by live microbial consortium followed a decreasing order of NAP   >   PHE   ≈   PYR   >   crude oil. The adsorption by heat-killed microbial consortium was constant for PAHs, while decreased for crude oil. Experiments on enzymatic degradation indicated that the metabolic efficiency of periplasmic, cytoplasmic and extracellular enzymes secreted by the microbial consortium for diverse substrates was different.

Insights into the low-temperature rapid catalytic pyrolysis and remediation mechanism of weathered petroleum-contaminated saline-alkali soil using Beta zeolite

Meng Xia,Kaihao Xu,Shuai Zhang,Chengxue Zhang,Xiaocong Wang,Jiqun Li

Pyrolysis technique is considered to have great potential in the remediation of petroleum-contaminated soil, but it still has difficulties such as high energy consumption for the degradation of complex petroleum hydrocarbons and the deterioration of soil quality after treatment. In this study, the low-temperature rapid catalytic pyrolysis was realized using Beta zeolite to assist in remediating weathered petroleum-contaminated saline-alkali soil. Under the action of Beta zeolite, the removal efficiency of petroleum hydrocarbons reached 81% after pyrolysis treatment for 10 min at 250 °C, which was reduced to regulatory standard. The pyrolysis behavior and mechanism revealed that the addition of Beta zeolite effectively reduced the activation energy of C-C and C-O bonds cleavage in petroleum hydrocarbon macromolecules due to the strong acidity of Beta, meanwhile the quality of recovered oil from pyrolysis was improved. Additionally, the analyses of soil physicochemical property indicated that the harmless graphitic C generated from the degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons increased the organic matter in the soil, and the addition of Beta zeolite enhanced soil water retention capacity and reduced the soil alkalinity, thus improving the ecological function of saline-alkali soil. This study provides a new strategy for the removal of organic pollutants under special soil media conditions.

Treatment of oil-based drilling cuttings using the demulsification separation-Fenton oxidation method

Yang Hang,Cai Jiaxi,Sun Jianfa,Zhou Zejun,Zhang Yi,Xia Shibin

In this study, demulsification separation-Fenton oxidation technology was employed as a combined technology to treat total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in oil-based drill cuttings (OBDC). Batch experiments were carried out to optimize the technology parameter. Under the optimal condition, 70% and 51% TPH removal rate was obtained for demulsification technology and Fenton oxidation technology, respectively. Eighty-five percent of TPH removal rate was obtained using combination technology of demulsification separation and Fenton oxidation. Multiple characterizations were used to analyze the physical and chemical properties of treated OBDC. The result of XRD pattern indicated the combination technology had no obvious effect for structure phase of OBDC. The results of FTIR, GC-MS, TG-DTG and SEM were used to characterize the treated OBDC. This paper provides an efficient and feasible combined technology for OBDC treatment, which expands a new strategy for the removal of TPH from solid waste

Mechanism and Characteristics of Oil Recovery from Oily Sludge by Sodium Lignosulfonate Treatment

Yun Ma,Mingzhu Yao,Lu Liu,Chengrong Qin,Baicheng Qin,Ningkang Deng,Chen Liang,Shuangquan Yao

The separation of oil components from oily sludge is an important component of soil remediation and energy recovery. Therefore, establishing a green and efficient separation technology is of great significance. In this study, oily sludge was separated using sodium lignosulfonate (SL) treatment. The effects of temperature, SL concentration, rotate speed, time, and pH on the oil removal rate were studied. The optimal conditions were as follows: temperature, 30 °C; SL concentration, 2.0 g·L–1; rotate speed, 200 rpm; time, 60 min; and pH 11. The maximum oil removal rate was 83.21%. The physicochemical properties of oily sludge were analyzed. The soil was looser, and the contact angle (55°) of the soil surface was reduced. Alkanes, aldehydes, ketones, carbonic acids, benzene rings, and alicyclic ethers were removed. The result shows that the SL treatment removed a wider range of petroleum hydrocarbon and had a stronger oil removal capacity. It provides a new method for the green and efficient separation of oily sludge.

pH-Responsive Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent: An Environmental Alternative for the Sustainable Extraction of Petroleum Hydrocarbons from Oil Sands

Shaoyang Liu,Jie Qi,Yuzhe Li,Ruiyao Wang,Li Wang,Hongsheng Lu,Zheng Zhang

The reversible shift in polarity or hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of switchable solvents greatly simplifies the recovery capacity in extraction applications. However, the environmental and economical advantages of switchable solvents are not significant. In this work, we designed three pH-responsive natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) by combining the pH-switchable solvent fatty acids with the nonswitchable solvent ethyl lactate (EL), followed by the exploration of the solubilization and separation performance of these NADESs for petroleum hydrocarbons. EL can be miscible in fatty acids and water; however, when in contact with both at the same time, EL binds to fatty acids through stronger intermolecular hydrogen bonds, whereas when fatty acids are deprotonated to fatty acid salts, EL can bind to water. The deprotonation/protonation of fatty acids could reversibly change the NADES hydrophilicity, and the recovery of NADES HA/EL could exceed 95% after three cycles. Furthermore, after extractive separation of simulated oils of differing complexity, NADES HA/EL was selected as the best extractant. Compared with the extraction of oil sands with a single solvent, NADES provides better wetting of the sand surface, better stripping efficiency of the heavy components that adhere to the surface of oil sands, and better dispersion of the stripped petroleum hydrocarbons. Petroleum hydrocarbons can be separated by NaOH-induced hydrophilic changes in NADES, which can be regenerated upon the addition of HCl. The recovered NADES showed good reusability in the cleaning of oil sands. The oil removal rates were 96.9%, 94.4%, and 91.9% after three cycles of cleaning with NADES at 25 °C. This method is expected to expand the application of nonswitchable solvents in sustainable extraction.

Effect of cyclodextrin on desorption of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil

Xiaonuo Zhang,Chaoyang Huang,Jie Ren,Tadiyose Girma Bekele,Hongxia Zhao

The present study delineated to explore the possibility of using cyclodextrins as an environmentally friendly solubilizer for enhancing the desorption efficiency of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) in the contaminated soil. The results showed that cyclodextrins could promote the transfer of PHs from the soil solid phase to the aqueous phase . Through the batch desorption experiments, single-factors influencing the desorption efficiency, including desorption time, species of cyclodextrin, solid to liquid ratio (S/L ratio) of soil to solvent, concentrations of solubilizer and concentrations of the contaminated soil were investigated. In addition, the response surface methodology analysis were used to identify the optimal desorption conditions, and the optimal desorption parameters were concluded as the follows: desorption time of 34 h, S/L ratio of soil to solvent of 1:25, concentration of β-CD of 0.75 g/L (for PAHs), desorption time of 18 h, S/L ratio of soil to solvent of 1:5, concentration of β-CD of 4.8 g/L (for n-alkanes). The highest desorption efficiency of two representative PHs, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, phenanthrene , fluoranthene and pyrene) and n-alkane (C16, C20, C24, C28 and C32), were 63.0% and 61.7%, respectively. This study presented new-positive evidence of cyclodextrins for enhancing desorption of PHs, was of great importance for enhancement of bioavailability of PHs, and further revealed the great potential of cyclodextrins as a solubilizer in-situ assisting removal of PHs in the petroleum-contaminated sites.

Remediation of oil-polluted soil using anionic and non-ionic composite biosurfactants

Yanxin Zhao,Yuhuan Sun,Fang Zuo,Haihan Sun,Shaoping Kuang,Shuwu Zhang,Fayuan Wang

Petroleum hydrocarbons as pervasive pollutants pose a significant threat to soil ecology and human health. Surfactant washing as an established technique can effectively remediate soils contaminated by hydrocarbons. Biosurfactants, which combine the properties of surfactants and environmental compatibility, have attracted increasing interest. However, due to the high production cost of biosurfactants, their practical application is restricted. This study addressed these limitations by selecting two biosurfactants, β-cyclodextrin (C1) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (C2), and developed a promising cleaning agent formula through compounding and the addition of suitable additives. When the volume ratio of C1 to C2 was 8:2 and an 8 g/L mixture of sodium humate and sodium carbonate electrolyte was added, the surfactant system’s surface tension reached a minimum, yielding optimal oil removal. The formation and synergistic behaviour of mixed micelles of surfactants were explained using ideal solution theory and the Rubingh model. By optimising the oil washing process parameters – normal temperature of 25 °C, pH 11, washing time of 2 h, solid–liquid ratio of 1:5, and oscillation frequency of 200 r/min – the oil removal rate achieved 76%. This cleaning agent, characterised by low production cost, straightforward application, environmental compatibility, and rapid, significant cleaning effect, shows potential for field-scale purification of petroleum-contaminated soil.

Sustainable Recovery of Petroleum Hydrocarbons by Deep Eutectic Solvents with CO2-Controllable Polarity

Xiaojiang Li,Xingqiao Zhang,Chengwei Zuo,Han Zhang,Zhenfu Jia

Cleaner recovery of petroleum hydrocarbons is a key process for waste oil and gas resources, especially oily waste solid. However, the direct recovery of petroleum hydrocarbons is difficult with deep eutectic solvents (DES) without other additives (such as water). In this work, ionic liquid-based DESs (ILs-DESs) with a controllable polarity were prepared for the sustainable recovery of petroleum hydrocarbons. Here, CO2-responsive ionic liquids were prepared by the neutralization reaction of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene and iminazole (Im), pyrazol (Py), or triazole (Tri). Then, the ILs-DESs were separately prepared by using ionic liquids as proton acceptors and straight-chain alcohols (carbon number = 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12) as proton donors. The polarity transformation of the ILs-DESs was regulated only by the introduction and removal of CO2, which was caused by the reversible transformation from ILs-DESs with a lower polarity to alkyl carbonate and carbamate with higher polarity upon CO2. Because of the polarity changes, the simulated oil (such as n-dodecane or diesel oil) was mixed with ILs-DESs, and the samples were directly separated by introducing CO2. Finally, a sustainable process for treating oil sands and oily sludge by using ILs-DESs was developed, where the ILs-DESs were also reused more than twice. This implies that a sustainable approach for petroleum hydrocarbon recovery was realized by using DESs.

Petroleum hydrocarbons removal from the aged soil: Analysis of soil enzymes and microbial community evolution during phytoremediation of Suaeda salsa

Xiaonuo ZHANG,Yaxi DENG,Goujian CHI,Hong LÜ,Hongxia ZHAO

ABSTRACT Rhizoremediation has emerged as a burgeoning approach for the removal of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) from soil, with a primary emphasis on terrestrial plant systems. However, the mechanism on how soil microbiomes influence the dissipation of PHCs within a hygrophyte planting system has yet to be fully elucidated. This work concentrated on investigating the potential evolution of soil microbiomes and their effect on the PHCs dissipation within the Suaeda salsa (L.) Pall. planting system using the pot experiment. Two representative compounds, namely polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and n-alkanes, were used as target PHCs. The findings revealed a significant efficiency in the dissipation of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) in soil, particularly with respect to n-alkanes. The high dissipation efficiency of PHCs was the synergistic result of both the root accumulation and the microbial biodegradation. The key microbes involved in PHCs dissipation were revealed, with the dominant phylum of Protobacteria and genus of Salinimicrobium . The alterations in microbial diversity and abundance were closely associated with the root exudation and PHCs exposure. Significant differences in enzyme activity, which serves as an indicator of soil health and fertility, were observed between the rhizospheric and non-rhizospheric soil, attributed to root exudation. This study offers novel insights into the phytoremediation potential for Suaeda in PHC-contaminated soil and serves as a valuable scientific reference for the phytoremediation of such soils.

Enhanced biodegradation of crude oil by constructed bacterial consortium comprising salt-tolerant petroleum degraders and biosurfactant producers

Weiwei Chen,Yachao Kong,Junde Li,Yanyu Sun,Jun Min,Xiaoke Hu

Bioremediation is an attractive strategy of utilizing bacteria to remove crude oil contaminants. In this study, two salt-tolerant crude oil-degrading and biosurfactant-producing bacteria, Dietzia sp. CN-3 and Acinetobacter sp. HC8–3S, were functionally combined to construct a bacterial consortium. The consortium achieved 95.8% degradation efficiency of crude oil in 10 days and various n -alkanes, cycloalkanes , branched alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons were all depleted more effectively than single strains. Functional optimization of the consortium degraded crude oil efficiently in a wide range of pH (4–10) and salinity (0–120 g L −1 ). Furthermore, two alkane hydroxylase genes, alkB in CN-3 and alkM in HC8–3S, were cloned and their expression were examined by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction , indicating that alkB was more prominent in long-chain alkanes (C 20 , C 24 and C 26 ) utilization and alkM played crucial roles in medium- and long-chain alkanes (C 14 , C 16 , C 20 , C 24 and C 26 ) degradation. In soil microcosms artificially contaminated with crude oil and bioaugmented with the consortium, 58.3% of total petroleum hydrocarbons were depleted after 60 days and the degradation rate (485.8 mg kg −1 d −1 ) was higher than those reported in previous studies. Consequently, the consortium is a promising candidate in crude oil bioremediation.
