Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are a kind of potential lixiviant for extraction processing. Unlike conventional ionic liquids (ILs), DESs are relatively cheap and environmentally friendly. Herein, three different ChCl-based DESs, namely, choline chloride/urea, choline chloride/ethylene glycol, as well as choline chloride/propandioic acid, were synthesized and used to enhance bitumen recovery from oil sand by petroleum ether extraction. The results showed a multiphase system formed after mixing the components at ~25°C, consisting of sands and clays, a DES layer, and a petroleum ether layer containing the bitumen. These DESs were immiscible with bitumen or petroleum ether. Coupled with a density difference, a clear phase separation was presented between the bitumen–petroleum ether mixture and DES. The DES functioned as a separating agent, keeping the petroleum ether–bitumen mixture and spent sand apart from each other. The results showed that the bitumen recovery was increased by ~12% compared with that without the DESs. We deduced that the enhancement in the separation may result from the reduction of adhesion between bitumen and sand by the DESs. The ChCl-based DESs and petroleum ether could be readily recycled to reduce industrial costs. After 10 cycles, the bitumen recovery remained above 86%.

Sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam] is grown as important cash and food crop worldwide and has been shown to exhibit allelopathic effects on other plants. However, its metabolome has not been studied extensively, particularly with respect to the production of phytotoxic bioactive secondary products. In this study, the chemical composition of petroleum ether extract of sweet potato was characterized, and the morphological and physiological effects of some individual components against four invasive alien weeds Bidens pilosa L., Galinsoga parviflora Cav., Lolium multiflorum Lam., and Phalaris minor Retz. were determined. Twenty-one components were identified by GS-MS, constituting 96.08% of petroleum ether extract in sweet potato. The major components were palmitic acid (PA) (17.48%), ethyl linoleate (EL) (13.19%), linoleic acid (LA) (12.55%), ethyl palmitate (EP) (11.77%), ethyl linolenate (ELL) (8.29%) oleic acid (5.82%), ethyl stearate (4.19%), and 3-methylphenol acetate (3.19%). The five most abundant compounds exhibited strong inhibition activity against the four invasive weeds tested. The highest inhibition rates were seen for LA, followed by PA and EP, respectively. Catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA), and peroxidase (POD) content of L. multiflorum were increased by the three allelochemicals, i.e., LA, PA and EP, but superoxide dismutase (SOD), chlorophyll-a and chlorophyll-b levels declined. Overall, the combined impact of all five compounds could be quite effective in suppressing the invasive weeds of concern.

The solubility of N-ethylcarbazole in (ethanol+petroleum ether) binary solvent mixtures was measured with the temperature changing from 280.15 K to 316.15 K. The experimental data matched the solvent/Redlich-Kister (CNIBS/R-K) equation and the Jouyban-Acree equation. Computational results showed the CNIBS/R-K equation was more suitable than the Jouyban-Acree equation. The solution process in the thermodynamic properties, including the Gibbs energy, enthalpy, and entropy, was calculated by the van’t Hoff analysis.

A biochar (BC)-supported non-noble metal catalyst CoMoSxOy@BC was prepared by in situ co-pyrolysis and ex situ sulfurization, and a two-step conversion (TSC) strategy, including H2-controlled catalytic hydroconversion (CHC) and catalytic ethanolysis without H2 participation, was proposed and used for catalyzing degradation of Dahuangshan lignite (DL) into soluble species (SSs) in high yields. CoMoSxOy@BC with uniformly dispersed nanoparticles of metals, metal sulfides, and metal oxides plays a crucial role in the TSC. The effective activation of H2 and ethanol over CoMoSxOy@BC facilitates cleaving bridged linkages in organic matter of DL to increase the SS yields. As a result, the total yield of SSs increased from 42.7% via non-catalytic degradation (NCD) to 70.0% via catalytic degradation (CD), while that of the petroleum ether-extractable portion (PEEP) increases from 17.5% via NCD to 27.0% via CD. In addition, according to the analysis with a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer, alkanes, arenes, and arenols are dominant in PEEPs from step 1 (PEEPs1), while alkanol, arenols, and esters in PEEPs from step 2 (PEEPs2) are predominant. The difference in composition among the PEEPs and hydrogenated PEEPs obtained by the CHC further confirms that PEEPs1 are more suitable as a precursor for the fuel-platform unit, while PEEPs2 are better candidates for obtaining value-added chemicals. In other words, multiple PEEPs in high yields with different properties can be obtained by this TSC strategy, which provides a potential and promising alternative to the clean and efficient utilization of lignites.

Currently, the energy crisis is a hot topic for researchers because we are facing serious problems due to overpopulation and natural energy sources are vanishing day-by-day. To overcome the energy crisis, biofuel production from non-edible plant seeds is the best solution for the present era. In the present study, we select the non-edible seeds of Acacia farnesiana for biofuel production from different areas of Pakistan with better oil production results. Different kinds of analytical method, like the American Standard for Testing and Materials and techniques like Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gas chromatography, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, were used to evaluate the chemical compositions. The maximum oil extraction rate (23%) was produced by petroleum ether. Potassium hydroxide exhibited the best conversion result of 96% fatty acid methyl ester. The transesterification method was used for the preparation of fatty acid methyl ester (96%) using potassium hydroxide and methanol. The viscosity and density of Acacia farnesiana seed oil biodiesel was comparable to American Standard for Testing Material biodiesel standards. By using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, five fatty acids were detected comprising palmitic acid (6.85%), stearic acid (2.36%), oleic acid (12.13%), linoleic acid (46.85%), and α-linolenic acid (1.23%). This study concludes that Acacia farnesiana seed oil biodiesel could be an intriguing raw material for yielding Acacia farnesiana seed oil methyl ester as an alternative fuel source.

Ethnopharmacological relevance Schisandra sphenanthera (Schisandra sphenanthera Rehd. et Wils.) is the dried mature fruit of Schisandra sphenanthera, a plant in the Magnoliaceae family. It was used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus in the Jade Fluid Decoction and the Xiaoke pills, which were recorded in ancient books. However, its mechanism of action in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was unclear and needs further study. Aim of the study This research aimed to investigate the chemical composition and lignan content of Schisandra sphenanthera petroleum ether parts (SPEP) and to evaluate the effects of SPEP on sweet taste receptors (STRs) and intestinal flora in rats on a high-fat diet (HFD). Additionally, the relationships between SPEP and hyperglycemia and insulin resistance were examined. Materials and methods GC-MS was used to determine the chemical composition of SPEP, and HPLC was used to determine the lignin content. A combination of the HFD and the administration of streptozotocin (STZ) was employed to generate a rat model of T2DM. Petroleum ether extracts from Schisandra sphenanthera were used as the focus of the research to evaluate the effects of these extracts on the glucolipid metabolism of T2DM rats, as well as the underlying mechanisms. Results Analysis of the GC-MS spectrum of SESP revealed a total of 58 compounds. HPLC analysis revealed that SPEP had the highest concentration of Schisandrin A and the lowest concentration of Schisandrol A. The drug administration intervention resulted in a significant decrease in body weight and pancreatic weight of diabetic rats compared to the Normal group. When compared to the Model group, the body weight of rats in the drug administration group and the Metformin group had a more moderate decrease, while the pancreatic weight and pancreatic-to-body ratio increased. The Model group shown significant increases in FBG, OGTT, GHb, TC, TG, LDL-C, ALT, AST, MDA, FINS, and NEFA, as well as significant decreases in HDL-C and SOD, when compared to the Normal group ( P < 0.05). The administration of each group was found to be significantly effective in decreasing FBG, OGTT, GHb, TC, TG, LDL-C, ALT, AST, MDA, FINS, NEFA, while increasing HDL-C and SOD when compared to the Model group. The application of SPEP had a positive impact on hepatocyte swelling, hepatocyte degeneration, and necrosis, as well as the morphological structure of pancreatic islet cells. Furthermore, the protein expression levels of T1R2, TRPM5 and GLP-1 in the small intestine of the Model group were reduced. After a period of six weeks, the protein expression levels began to align more closely with those of the Normal group of rats. Analysis of 16S rRNA sequencing revealed that the intestinal microbiota of diabetic rats was significantly disrupted, with a decrease in the abundance of the Firmicutes phylum and an increase in the abundance of the Bacteroidetes phylum. Furthermore, the composition of the dominant genus was distinct from that of the control group. After the drug intervention, the microbiota of diabetic rats was significantly altered, exhibiting a higher abundance and diversity, as well as a significant enrichment of the community. The SPEP treatment resulted in a significant increase in acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid. Conclusions The findings of this research indicated that SPEP could be effective in treating T2DM through the regulation of STRs, the adjustment of disturbed metabolite levels, and the alteration of intestinal flora.

Premna puberula , a medicine food homologous plant, is utilized in the preparation of cold tofu and as traditional Chinese medicine. This study aimed to identify the chemical components of P. puberula root petroleum ether extract (PEE) and clarify its anticancer properties and associated mechanisms. The MTT results of the four extracts (petroleum ether extract, ethyl acetate extract, n-butanol extract, and water extract) from P. puberula root showed that the PEE had good cytotoxic activity against A549 cells (IC 50 = 38.01 ± 3.36 μg/mL) and low toxicity to normal cells (IC 50 = 76.85 ± 3.18 μg/mL). The GC-FID/MS analysis revealed fifty compounds, which made up 98.6 % of the total PEE. Further antitumor assay demonstrated that PEE induced cell cycle arrest in the S phase by up-regulating p21 and cyclin E2 expression, thereby inhibiting the proliferation of A549 cells. Simultaneously, it induces apoptosis through the mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis pathway, which significantly up-regulated the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2, down-regulated mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm), promoted the release of Cyt c, activated caspase-9 and caspase-3, thereby resulting in PARP cleavage. It prevented the migration and invasion of A549 cells by reducing the expression of MMP-2 and N-cadherin. In conclusion, P. puberula root PEE can be a new source of antitumor agents and has significant anticancer activity in vitro .

Published data from in vitro assays support the anti-inflammatory effects of jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum Linn.) but limited studies are reported in animal models. Herein, the anti-inflammatory effects of jasmine flower extracts (JFEs) including ethanol extract (JF-EE), petroleum ether extract (JF-PEE), ethyl acetate extract (JF-EAE), and n-butanol extract (JF-BE) were evaluated in a mouse ear edema model. Acute mouse ear skin inflammation was induced by tetradecanoylphorbol acetate (TPA; 125 µg/mL) and then treated with JFEs (100 mg/mL) or dexamethasone (DEX; 6.25 mg/mL; as a positive control). Jasmine flower extracts alleviated ear edema by reducing TPA-increased ear thickness and ear weight by 30.8% to 64.1% and 24.0% to 47.1%, respectively, whereas DEX showed comparable activity (by 71.8% and 49.1%, respectively). Their anti-inflammatory effects were supported by data from the immunohistochemical assays. Jasmine flower extracts reduced the inflammatory cells (from 5.5- to 9.5-fold) and the expressions of inflammation related enzymes including cyclooxygenase-2 and inhibitor of kappa-B kinase (from 1.9- to 2.8-fold and from 7.1- to 11.0-fold, respectively). Findings from this study showed that JFEs were able to ameliorate TPA-induced mouse skin inflammation. However, future studies on the underlying mechanisms of jasmine flower’s anti-inflammatory effects are warranted.

As a culinary and medicinal herb, rosemary is widely used. The present work aimed to investigate the effects of rosemary extracts on metabolic diseases and the underlying mechanisms of action. Liver cells stably expressing SREBP reporter were used to evaluate the inhibitory effects of different fractions of rosemary extracts on SREBP activity. The obese mice induced by Western-type diet were orally administered with rosemary extracts or vehicle for 7 weeks, the plasma and tissue lipids were analyzed. SREBPs and their target genes were measured by quantitative RT-PCR. We demonstrated that the petroleum ether sub-fraction of rosemary extracts (PER) exhibited the best activity in regulating lipid metabolism by inhibiting SREBPs, while water and n -BuOH sub-fraction showed the SREBPs agonist-effect. After PER treatment, there was a significant reduction of total SREBPs in liver cells. PER not only decreased SREBPs nuclear abundance, but also inhibited their activity, resulting in decreased expression of SREBP-1c and SREBP-2 target genes in vitro and in vivo . Inhibiting SREBPs by PER decreased the total triglycerides and cholesterol contents of the liver cells. In the mice fed with Western-type diet, PER treatment decreased TG, TC, ALT, glucose, and insulin in blood, and improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity. Furthermore, PER treatment also decreased lipid contents in liver, brown adipose tissue, and white adipose tissue. Our results from the present study suggested that petroleum ether fraction of rosemary extracts exhibited the best potential of improving lipid metabolism by inhibiting SREBPs activity.

The oil pollution in aquatic ecosystems poses a serious threat to public health and ecological balance. In addressing this challenge, this investigation employed bacterial cellulose (BC) as the matrix material, through strategic incorporation of chemical cross-linking agents (Butane tetracarboxylic acid and graphene oxide) combined with freeze-drying technology and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method to fabricate cross-linked BC (CBC) aerogels. Subsequent hydrophobic modification via chemical vapor deposition was implemented to optimize surface properties. Key findings revealed that the cross-linked composite aerogel demonstrated a homogeneous 3D lamellar architecture with negligible crystal precipitation, manifesting remarkable structural stability (linear shrinkage rate 5.88%) and ultrahigh porosity (99.9%) accompanied by minimal average pore diameter (1.9 nm). Enhanced thermal stability was evidenced by increased mass residual rate from 15.9% to 41.5% at 600 °C. The material maintained superior compression resilience through 10 compression cycles at 50% strain, preserving structural integrity in aqueous environments. Optimal hydrophobicity (contact angle 152°) was achieved after 3.5 h of vapor deposition, while remarkable adsorption capacities for various oils were recorded (45–204 g/g). Notably, the composite exhibited outstanding reusability, retaining 85.2% of ethanol adsorption capacity after 20 extraction cycles, and preserving 76.7% of paraffin oil adsorption capacity. These results collectively demonstrate the broad application prospects of this bio-based oil-absorbing material in oil-water separation technologies.

Combretastatin A4 (CA4) is a potent microtubule inhibitor, but its phenolic hydroxyl group is prone to oxidation into toxic quinone products, leading to poor metabolic stability and dose-limiting toxicity that restricts its clinical application. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel dimer prodrug strategy that covalently links two CA4 molecules via an enzyme-cleavable linker, achieving temporary masking of the phenolic hydroxyl group. The resulting CA4-dimer1 and CA4-dimer2 exhibited potent in vitro antiproliferative activity. Of the two dimers evaluated, CA4-dimer1 demonstrated superior in vitro potency. Crucially, CA4-dimer1 achieved significant tumor suppression rates in patient-derived xenograft (PDX) liver cancer models without notable toxicity. CA4-dimer2 releases active CA4 through gradual hydrolysis but showed slightly lower in vivo release efficiency compared to CA4-dimer1. Flow cytometry and Western blot analysis revealed that this prodrug exerts antitumor activity through the same mechanism as the parent compound CA4. Collectively, the reported CA4-dimer prodrug strategy offers a highly promising approach for treating liver cancer and enhancing the therapeutic index of phenolic drugs, while also providing a potential strategy for structural optimization of drugs containing phenolic hydroxyl groups
